I found my rather old LG optimus p990 the other day and since I lost my iPhone last time a was on my way home from the club, I decided to give it a shot. It has the android froyo 2.2.2 or something, tried to find an uptade to gingerbread on LG:s own site, but for no good. Now I really want to roote it, but I'm obviously a big f*cking noob at that so now I've spent a hole day on the **** and havn't come nowhere
Or in fact, I've come to step 3 in SuperOneClick but then it happends nothing more, it's like it's just giving up. Before SuperOneClick gives up, it reboots the phone and when the phone has started again SuperOneClick has come to step 3 and then it throws in the towel for no reason!! Why?!?!
I have on USB debug and I have unmounted the SD-card. Though I red something somewhere about that you should uninstall the car home app and the F-security app before you root, but those apps are pre-installed by LG and unable to uninstall I have "forced them to stop" though.
Can it be because SuperOneClick v. 2.3.3.0 doesn't go with Android froyo 2.2.2? I did try to download some older version of SOC but couldn't found it. And isn't odd that my phone reboot so quickly, shouldn't it wait longer for that (from what I can see from the youtube tutorials)?
Please heeeelp!!! :crying: <3<3<3
Go to options tab and mark on alternate drivers. Then try.
Keep auto.

Try other Rooting methods..You'll find it on the P990 android development section, most probably the second or third thread..It's even better! Try that..

hahaha noooooo my phone totally f*cked up when I tried to install the "MoDaCo Custom ROM for the LG Optimus 2X - Vanilla Edition"-ROM. now it's just rebooting forever! haha I'm such a fail!
I downloaded the ROM and placed it on the SD-card, I started the ROM Manager to install it. When the installation begins and the phone reboot, there pops up a screen with a dead androidrobot with his stomach opened and a red cross on it (poor thing!) and it says "can't find the ROM on the SD-card" (what an idiot, it found it just fine when I started the installation) and I picked the option "reboot phone". And that's what it does, over and over again!
:crying::crying:
somebody help?? <3<3 plz?
Did you install clockwork mod through Rom manager?
If so then try to turn of phone and when you turn it back on hold power + vol down to enter clockwork mod (cwm), either it enter cwm or it begins a factory reset.
Hope it makes sense.

Phone worked fine with lagfix... but consumed too much battery and I decided to uninstall the lagfix with the mcr script...
Then applications stopped working and it gave errors, so the best thing to do is to reboot I thought NOT
Now it will not boot annymore and it's stuck after the nice Samsung intro after that my screen stays black and the only response is the illuminated keys..
Tried 3-button recovery but that didn't work.. no recovery no download mode..
I have one from The Netherlands, Europe/International version.
PLEASE HELP ??
you can try to flash a stock Euro ROM back into your phone with Odin and repartition enabled
if that doesn't work, then the next best thing is to send the SGS back to repair
How can Odin see my phone? The only thing I can see are 2 external sd card that I can't access.
use the 3 button Download Mode to get into the connection with Odin

How long have you waited for the samsung galaxy s intro to pass ? I had quite a shock myself when I rooted my phone. I just had to be patient and the phone went on to operate as usual after a long initial wait during the time the logo was shown... After that, every subsequent reboot was faster.
I haven't flashed my phone because Odin can't recognize my phone. It just hangs in the boot screen and there isn't happening anything. The phone just gets warm and does nothing... Looks like that lagfix f*cked up my root
Guess I must head back to the store ... and wait ... 2 weeks or more so...
Have you tried the heat fix to get the 3 button working?

You're right. After I heard it consumed very much energy I decided to UN-install the lagfix which messed up my root by partitioning it wrong...
Brought it back to the store today so I hope to have it back soon!
Then after delivery I will make sure I can access the 3-button combo!
same here. damn it, my JF5 don't have 3BR
already sent to SGS last friday. hope that I will get it back on this week.
We should tell others that who installed LagFix
DONT TRY TO UNINSTALL IT Unless you got your time to wait.

Yeah that will be a very smart thing to do!
The main guideline will be: Don't do anything stupid before you can access the recovery and download mode
Got my phone back, but still hecitating to do the 3-button flash since there are more people that have bricked their phone with it.
Hopefully the Froyo update comes soon! (in one of these days )
Is anyone else having problems with the new version of the youtube widget? I used to be able to click on it, and it would take me to my home page, where I could find my favorites, etc. Now, more often than not, it just says "connection Problem, try again". And when it does work, it takes me to some random youtube video.
Anyone have a solution?
Try this .apk. It's the one I've had on my phone through all the updates and flashing that I've done and it works flawless for me.
Thanks, but I'm not rooted, so I only know how to download apps from the market.
Every time I read a thread about rooting, or similar modifications, there is post after post about "bricks", so I haven't had the guts to do that yet.
I was skeptical about rooting too when I first started with android, but the easiest one was the unleash the beast. Just download it, transfer to your phone, rename it to "update", boot into recovery, run update and you're done. Takes about 5 minutes. And now, I'm flashed with DG's Cognition 2.1.5 and I love it! But I'm not trying to rush you or anything, browse the site and find what's gonna work best for you.
Actually, now that I read and re-read your question/problem, I've noticed what you are talking about. When you place the widget on the homescreen, it gives you a "most viewed" video and a search option. I stopped using the widget for that reason, then I started using the above .apk as my main youtube app as a quick link, or from my app menu and it opens up the full youtube app and it allows you to view the videos in HD. I never found a work around for the "most viewed/search" option in the widget though.

thanks. I got stuck at the first part, couldn't find an app called unleash the beast in the market. No idea what "boot into recovery" or DG's Cognition is either, but I'll google those.
Unleash the beast and DG's Cognition are both on this site, under the captivate android development. Unleash the beast is a really simple root to apply, it has a walk through in the first post. Cognition... I'd say hold off on trying that until you feel comfortable messing around with your phone. "booting into recovery", just google 'how to boot into recovery' lol. It's usually done by powering down, then holding the volume + and volume - and the power button until it flashes a black screen with blue and yellow writing, that would be the recovery menu.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751182
Ok, I'm learning. I think I understand how to install the unleash the beast now, but I'm not sure how to restore the phone to stock, should I so desire. can anyone tell me how to do that?

Yea the odin is pretty much an all around tool to flash back to stock if you need to. And if that happens, there Is a link in there to tell you where to pick up the stock rom for your phone. Just read up on odin, it's pretty simple too.

You can install non-market apps without rooting. Search on ADB for installing apps, or "sideload wonder machine".
Both methods allow you to install apps from your PC via USB cable, no root required.
(Obvious Noob warning---) A friend helped me root my Thrill, install ClockworkMod Recovery, and then install CM7 on my Thrill. But I would like to try the LG GB release. Is it necessary to backtrack all the way back to stock to do this (i.e. reinstall the stock ROM, reinstall the stock recovery, unroot, etc.)?
My friend tried using the LG upgrade tool on his LG phone without going back to stock and ended up bricking it. He says that usually within a few days of release, a CMR compatible zip file (usually already rooted) appears here on XDA (I haven't seen it), which makes things easier (but obviously he didn't wait for it himself).
Will a zip be possible for the Thrill GB? (The file seems quite large (420MB), so I'm guessing there is a lot of media included.) Or should I just bite the bullet and backtrack?

Trojan?
Sorry, but as a noob, I can't post in that other thread.
It seems that the shttp3.exe in the LG Flash Package triggers Symantec's trojan detection. Some searching seems to indicate (assuming I'm reading all the cryptic virus sites correctly) that there is something to this, although it seems that different scanners find different trojans/viruses (can't post the link, but Google for "shttp3.exe" and "trojan"). I also found that the web site for this utility is blocked at work, because it's a "malicious site."
Has anyone seen this? Has anyone been able to verify/refute this?

Just my .02 .....Get rid of Symantec !! They are known for scaring people into a virus frenzy.. Yes, it is possible that it is seeing it as a potential virus because shttp is a workaround from the usual porting of windows ip services. ...
Correct me if i'm wrong somebody please !!
Get yourself Comodo and save your money...
Regards,
Dwayne
PS: somebody on here has written a script that just uses shttp temporarily while
your doing the flash procedure, and then reverts your host files back automatically after your done. You should try it.

I'm sorry I can't give the link yet, but if you'll Google you'll see Comodo classifies shttp3.exe as "ApplicUnwnt.Win32.ServerWeb.SmallHTTP.~A" or "UnclassifiedMalware" (I guess depending on the version). A number of scanners find issues with shttp3.exe. I'm not saying it is infected, only that it is doing something suspicious.

shttp3.exe is in no way a virus. I've scanned with AVG and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and they check out good.
Back to square one
OK, I seem to be stuck.
With paranoia in tow, I decided to take the long way back to stock. Unfortunately, when I tried to restore the backup of my stock image I made to SD card after installing CMR, the md5 checksum failed. I'm not sure what I can do about this.
So ok, I tried following the above link. The first step is to ensure the su binary is up-to-date. But when I tried this, I get a failure downloading the manifest. This is true for WiFi and HSPA+. I Googled and found a suggestion to delete the su binary. But that didn't help (I'm not sure how it would have helped anyway).
So back to the original question. Can I use the LG upgrade process to upgrade without going backwards (as you can see above, I can't) without bricking the phone? Can I start at step 3 in the link above and succeed?

Is it safe to ignore the su version update?
Short of this, can I override the MD5 checksum? I realize that image could be corrupt, but if I'm just going to replace it with the GB release, does that matter?

You should just put your phone in recovery mode and update through the tool
with your IMEI #. It will give you the latest update !
If you need some help on that I think Lestat or somebody has a write-up
on doing this.

Can you be a bit more specific?
1. By "recovery mode," do you mean into ClockworkMod Recovery, or I should revert to stock (I made a copy of it after I rooted the stock ROM, but before I installed CMR)?
2. By "the tool," do you mean the official LGMobile Software Update, or the LG Flash Package referenced in the link above?
3. By "latest update," do you mean the file directly from LG, or the copy (v20p) linked from the link above?
4. If the latter in both previous questions, which set of steps do I need to follow from the above link? Can I do only 3 (LG Flash Tool), or do I need to follow 1 (Recovery Manager), 2 (Returning to Stock), and 3?
My friend had a different LG phone, with ClockworkMod Recover and CM7 installed. He reverted the CM7 to stock, but did not replace CMR with the stock recovery. Then he used the official LG upgrade method and bricked his phone. I'm trying to avoid this.
Are you saying I don't have to worry about this on the LG Thrill 4G? Can I go straight from the current CMR+CM7 configuration to the LG GB release using the official LG process?
If you mean I should use a different process, can you point me to it? As I mentioned, I run into dead-ends using the method linked above. And I'm not even sure whether I should be doing steps 1, 2 and 3, or if I should just use step 3.
Any and all help is appreciated, but I guess I don't understand the shorthand you're using here, so if you could be a bit more specific, I wouldn't feel so lost.

Remove your battery and keep the phone unplugged
Launch the mobile updater tool
Hold the volume+ button plug the phone in and keep holding the volume+ till the computer downloads the drivers your phone is now in download mode
Once the phone is picked up go to customer support on the LG updater tool and click on recovery phone put your imie number in click check (make sure its the right model) an let the updater tool do its job. Once its done flashing launch into recovery volume- plus power plus 3D button do a complete wipe and factory reset and reboot your phone ... you'll lose cwm and root and be back to full stock

Bricked?
No joy. Following the steps, the upgrade stopped at 6%. Trying a number of times, it eventually forced me to exit the program (no more restarts). Rerunning the updater (and downloading the 420 MB image yet again on a VERY slow connection) I tried again and again, with different combinations of battery and plug order with power and volume buttons, but nothing worked. Checking elsewhere I found some issues had been reported with Windows Vista/7, so I tried on an XP machine. Now the "Start Updating" bar is red (it was always gray with W7). But now when I try to restore (or even update for that matter), it asks for my S/N (it never did that before) and then says it is "no longer able to upgrade." Reading around, it seems this is an indication of the device being bricked.
Rick
It sounds like you are very close to getting it working Rick.
My update did the same thing, looped over and over until it
finally kicked me out. Just plugging and unplugging the phone etc....
And when my update stuck at 6% the last time, i took my battery out and then in real quick and that seemed to work.
Does the phone still vibrate when you plug the usb cable into it while holding volume..? If it does then I highly doubt that your phone is bricked, just in a semi flashed state....No worries
Should Rick be trying to run LG Updater as administrator ? I didn't, but it might not hurt.

It never really vibrated, but I was able to get back into CMR. Unfortunately NONE of my backups work at all. They all have MD5 checksum failures. I tried a trick I found online and got past that step, only to have it say a failure restoring /system. So much for CMR.

Which step? As I mentioned above, I can't even get the first step of the first section (updating the su binary). And if I start at the 3rd section, Symantec prohibits me from using shttp3.exe (I tried to unquarantine it, but it gives a permission error, even as Administrator, when I try to run it), so I'll have to use a different machine.
I was able to reinstall the CM7 3/15 release, so that's something. I was going to restore the stock recovery backup I made, but even that doesn't seem to work. I'm having issue with backups :-(

4th post i think
Hi Everyone,
I know there are numerous posts on here and other sites about how to root your galaxy ace but I have tried them all and nothing seems to work. I have struggled with the phone for the last 17 months. I am due an upgrade in January. The lack of memory and poor performance does my head in. This is my first Android device. I hope newer devices are better else I will try to get an iPhone when I upgrade (or even win mobile).
When I try to root I either get:
"Error in /sdcard/upd_1.zip (status 7) Installation aborted
or
it says installation complete and when I reboot there is nothing to indicate a successfully rooted phone.
I have tried numerous downloaded files such as root, zip, upd_1.zip, update.zip etc and nothing I download seems to do the job.
I tried the Jelly Bean Cyanogen rom for a while but I found it even slower. Ideally I will stick with Gingerbread but I need to remove all the bundled crap. I have already moved as many apps as I can to sd card using the "SetInstallLocation 2" command which helped but I still hate this phone as it is.
Can someone PLEASE help before I pull out what little hair I have left.
Thanks

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I just downloaded universal_gb_root and it seemed to go okay. Lots of text flashing up screen then message saying something like "your phone now has root access - enjoy"
I restarted fully expecting it to have worked but alas, it is just the same. I then installed root checker from play store which confirms that "this device does not have proper root access."
I will have another look tomorrow after work. (if not chucked phone out car window by then)
How can tesco advertise this phone as "great for app lovers and gamers!" Yeah, if you only want a handful at any one time - grrrr

Sorry to hear that. My phone´s root was done long ago with one of those solutions that didnt work on your phone. So if you dont want to continue to look for a way to root, you can simply install a custom rom that already has root
I dont know stock rom´s already rooted, you have que wait for ironman to show you, But there are custom rom´s based on stock rom´s in this forum. Sorry coulnd be more helpful
[EDIT btw you did open superSU and upgrade the SU binary, or it didnt have superSU at all, after root?

hello searched the web and found this site that is guaranteed to be updated.
Tested the download and installation on my PC and it works, however, have not experienced in S5830 cause I already have root. You might want to find someone who has successfully used
Hi,
I didn't have superSU at all. No new icons or anything indicating root. Thanks for the suggestions. I will try when I get a minute.
Try My Blog.
www.andro-sapien.blogspot.in.
Root procedure is given and that file there actually works. Tested by me n many other people.

Hi guys!
I'm a newbie here at XDA. Long time ago, I have formatted my Optimus 2X from GB to ICS using smart flash tool. I have done that successfully. After few months, I felt like my phone is slow to respond. Then I decided to repartition and install fresh ICS copy again. I was not 100% sure what I was doing at that time. I have used AIO tool for this. Selected option no. 4 and have selected CWM v6.0.2.5 as recovery.
Then I tried to install the new ROM using smart flash and I did not succeed. After I have messed up with this problem, I contacted "spyrosk" (the OP of AIO tool thread) and he told me to install stock ROM on this thread. Then I have downloaded the V30A ROM and copied out to the phone memory, and installed using cwm by selecting install zip from sdcard option. I have succeeded.
But now I want get my phone back to the situation where I installed ICS in first time (GB to ICS using smartflash). Because my camera isn't working, OS freezes pretty much, etc. So I tried several times using Smart flash (in AIO tool) tool as I did as same as when I update from GB to ICS. But, I'm getting an error. Time out reached, after few minutes.
Should I remove CWM before install the fresh stock ICS rom using smart flash? Please guide me through this as I am a newbie for these kind of things. All I want to do is, bring back my phone to the same situation where I upgrade from GB to ICS, as I told you at the beginning of this thread.
Please don't ignore this thread by thinking I am an epic noob at this. Guide me and I'll do exactly as you guys say. Thanks a lot for reading. A reply would be greatly appreciated.
Anyone? Please.
BUMP. Can someone please give me an advice? I'm kinda disappointed right now.

There is nothing to worry about, just keep trying using smartflash. After each try remove the cable then connect it back, if it still not works restart teh phone to S/W screen. If it still not works try it on an other usb port, and do everithing from the begining. If it still fails use another cable or try it on an other computer.
It usually start work for the 6th or the 7th time of trying.
No need to remove cwm or anything like that.

Thank you very much for replying this thread BitDomo. I will try some more times then. Apart from that, I have seen a way to uninstall CWM by installing some files to the device. But I did not try that since that method is for CWM v3.x.x.
I'm kinda noob at savvy android thingies for now. I will learn some more about these thingies from the start of next month. Until then, I just want to bring my phone to official ICS 4.0.3 stock ROM and use the phone as I did earlier.
Thanks again for your kind reply to this thread bro. Really appreciate. I'll try some more times and will post the results. Dear android experts, any other solutions for this? Please make a post if you have a suggestion. Peace.. :highfive:
Please help
Guys I have tried over 10 times to flash to ICS 4.0.4 using Smartflash. But everytime I end up with same error. Then I tried Nvflash. But my device showed me a black screen after the process completed. Everything working correctly but I couldn't see anything on my LCD, its just a black screen with the light. So, I used full brick repair for P990 here at xda.
Now I have CWM v6.0.2.5 as recovery and CyanogenMod 10-20131105-UNOFFICIAL-p990 in my phone. Can someone please explain me how to bring this phone back to official ICS 4.0.4? I tried smartflash right now and device shows a black LCD screen. Smartflash picks up the device but process stops in few seconds. I have searched for revert back to stock ICS from CM, but I did not get a descriptive enough information for this. Please write atleast a brief reply if you know the procedure. Thank you very much. :good:

Problem solved. The thing we learnt today is that the battery have to be inserted when you use smartflash.

This dude is a genius. This tip fixed my phone instantly. If any of you had the same problem, remember NOT to remove the battery when you do a smartflash. So its time to close the thread.
i said it many times on forum
