I have a stock Android 2.3.6 galacy exhibit 4g and when I boot up into recovery, an update is automatically found, installed and then reboots the phone doing the same thing every time recovery is booted into. My problem is, I cannot find this update package in my internal sd storage to save my life nor do I even know what the update package would be called. Can anyone please help?

I'm not certain but it might be called update.zip, because if I remember that's the only name that will flash in the stock recovery. As for finding it, just try searching for update.zip. it should be on the root of the sdcard(no folder) because that's the only way I thought it could install. Any ways I'm probably wrong but at least you can try.

I'm not sure really what CSC code is but I think your talking about stock Odin flash able package. That should get you back to stock and flash the stock recovery and wipe everything. However i think it will bootloop after it flashes so you will have to boot into recovery and wipe data. If so check out the wiki. There is all the info you need. I have another idea though. I haven't done this myself but you should be able to push a clockworkmod recovery.img to the phone from a terminal if you have adb also in the wiki. I can't view your pic because I don't have a Facebook but maybe someone else can. Good luck

That is the stock update pushed by Samsung from what it sounds like. Also sounds like a data packet might have dropped during the downloading of it causing a bad install. For simplicity get cwm Installed and boot thru that and flash from cwm. Wiki has all the info needs.
Wiki please read completely on rooting and install of cwm. Suggest 6.0.1.2 version. Personal preferences on that.

Problem solved. I just randimly pushed the 3 buttons on the phone before the rebooting part came up in the script and finally got the menu, took may tries to get to that point but as soon as I got to that point, I was quick to install clockworkmod successfully. Now problem is gone. Hope this thread maybe helps someone else

I have a similar problem. Which 3 buttons are we talking about? Power+Home+VolUp?
Easiest way, take out battery, push volume up and power, insert battery while holding, when Samsung appears release only power, when the android guy with package appears press menu
Sent from my SGH-T679 using xda app-developers app
Make sure you push the "Menu" capacitive button (left in the row of four buttons below the screen) when you see the green Android guy and the box. That will get you into the stock recovery menu.
I had to reboot into recovery a couple of times because I missed that part. What a pain!

Did you set a new homescreen lol?
Obvious question is have you done anything to your phone? Can you give any details about what has gone on prior to it going black, has it always been a black background?

Never done anything to it, except charge it up. Bought it from ebay and when I hold down the home screen button, I get the task manager pop-up, but that's it. But the screen is completely black, except the top half with the time, wifi connection, battery life, etc.

It says, "ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.2" and it's green letters.
The way I got to that was when I got forced it into recovery mode, I clicked on the option to reinstall packages.
Sorry about that:
There is 'reboot system now', 'apply sdcard:update.zip', wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, install zip from sdcard, backup and restore, mounts and storage, and then advanced
Do you have a external sd you can hook up to your computer?
Who ever sold you the phone obviously was playing around with the phone.
if you have an sd there may be a way to recovery but it is a long shot.
What happens if you hook your phone into your mac
Edit
In clockwork select install zip from sd, it should list the files on the sd . What does it say?

What was the exact name of the rom (or filename)... was it a stock rom (SBF/XML) or was it one of the custom roms?
Also was your phone rooted?
I was trying to install a couple but the one I really have been trying in the liberty 3 2.0.

Are you using safestrap for your clockworkmodrecovery or are you using regular bootstrap?
And when you're in clockworkmod recovery what exact steps did you do to flash? You should wipe data & cache, then choose install zip from sdcard.
Sent from my XT860
I don't know how to use or get bootstrap and I don't know alot about safe strap yet. I tried different ways I tried using rom manager an downloading the rom from there then it will ask if I want to boot into recover I push ok and the phone just reboots. Nothing happens so I tried rom toolbox an did the same thing. So I tried to boot myself by pushing the power and x an I did as you said I wiped data a cache then I reset and restored my phone went back an installed zip from sd card then it starts to install then it says E file signature verification has failed.

Ahhhh ok.
It sounds like you are trying to install zips via the stock recovery. That recovery will only install signed/official ones, not custom rom zips.
If you want to install custom roms, try this method (but I recommend browsing through the other threads. There is a lot of useful info out there). This is the safestrap method. Safestrap allows you to have your stock rom (that you are on now) in the "non-safe zone" and with safestrap you can enable the "safe zone" for installing your custom rom.
1) make sure your phone is rooted if it isn't already. There are threads about this... I used DoomLord's root (version 4) for my phone but read up.
2) install safestrap 1.08 (u can find it in the droid 3 development forum). It is an apk file.
3) when you run safestrap 1.08 from your app drawer, superuser will probably ask you if you want to allow it root access, say yes.
4) in the app, hit the first button. It will install safestrap so you can boot into safestrap recovery. When it says its done, restart phone.
5) upon restart, you will be greeted by the safestrap splashscreen. It gives u 10 seconds to hit Menu to take you into safestrap recovery. Otherwise it will just continue with booting.
6) so hit menu. Safestrap ecovery appears. It will indicate that safe mode is not enabled yet. You are in non-safe right now (your stock rom)
7) this step is optional but I'm sure everyone will recommend it (I do also). Navigate your selection with the down/up volume buttons and hit power when you get to "backup". This will back up your non-safe zone and dump it onto your sdcard (internal or external). You can restore it to your non-safe zone (only) if you happen to mess up your non-safe system. The backup will be stored in /safestrap/backup. of whatever card you select.
8) now that that's done, it will take you back to the main menu of safestrap recovery
9) Go to "safe boot menu" and hit Toggle safe zone. Don't do the quick toggle, just do the normal one (the first one)
10) when that is done, you will notice the colour of the text has changed. And at the top it will say safe zone enabled. You can now install your custom rom by going to "install zip from sdcard" from the main menu of safestrap*
*Note that when installing roms, make sure to choose Wipe Data first. It will wipe your data and cache. Then go into mounts and storage and choose "format /system" (thanks Endo). Some people also like to go into the advanced menu and wipe the dalvik cache as well (is this necessary? I do it every time because I had to back on my old htc... maybe someone can comment on this?) It doesn't seem to hurt anything when I do it, so...
So after your wipes, you can go to "install rom from sdcard" . Choose the .zip of the rom (of course) to begin install. When the rom has finished installing, you can go back to the main menu and choose reboot phone. You will be greeted by the safestrap splashscreen again. It will tell you that safe zone is enabled. Wait the 10 seconds to boot normally or you can hit the search button to go immediately.
On first boot of many roms, it may take a little longer than normal to start up. Be patient. If it never boots (and you are looking at the boot animation forever... say more than 5-10 minutes?) Then... somethings wrong, or you may have forgotten to do your wipe procedure, but go to that rom's thread and read all the posts to see if others experienced the same thing... someone could have posted a good suggestion or solution
Oh, if you want to switch back to non-safe mode, restart phone, get into safestrap recovery, go into safe boot menu, and hit toggle. Then restart phone.
If something disastrous occurs, there are Unbrick and Fastboot threads in this forum where you can download a stock rom for your phone and flash to your phone via RSD Lite, which will pretty much restore your phone to stock. (No more safestrap, no more root). Read through those to get more info.
Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

I'm not really sure what you are doing but uninstall any recovery you may have installed and ditch rom manage(you can keep the toolbox) go to www.hash-of-codes.blogspot.com go to downloads and get safestrap. Install it, open it and click install recovery. Reboot your phone, you'll get a screen saying pish menu to enter recovery then once it enters go to safe mode menu(or whatever it exactly says) and enter safe mode. Once safemode is active(it says at the top of the screen)go to mounts and storage and format system then do a data/cache wipe, the install zip from sd
If you're doing what I think you're doing you are new to this and I would suggest reading as much as you can in this forum and by googling the various terms you find so you don't brick your phone

If you have your heart set on rom manager, I believe it will work, but I've never used it so I can't help you there. I recommend safestrap because once you're in safemode its pretty hard to screw up your phone in any serious manner. In safemode you'll always be able to access recovery.
In a google search of your issue I found a recommendation of turning off signature verification. I know I've seen an option for this or something really damn similar in clockwork recovery. You can try that if you like but I don't know the effects of it. As always, I'm not responsible if you brick your device
That said, I would also suggest that you look into obtaining rsdlite and the appropriate fastboot package(you may know this as an sbf, although that term isn't totally correct)so if you do brick your device you know how to recover it. There's a sticky in the dev forum about it
Sent from my DROID3 using xda premium
Thank you I understand I wouldn't ever blame anyone for my mistakes so your good. I was thinking about using safestrap anyways just haven't had time to research it much yet. Probably would be best since I don't know much about roms anyways. Now it's not that I have it set with rom manager just seemed easy to use and I like rom toolbox alittle more anyways. I also know that not all roms are comparable with the safestrap so that's another reason why I haven't used it yet.
Now on another topic. I have downloaded safestrap on my computer all I have to do is plug my phone to the computer an put it on mass storage and place it in the sd card or internal memory and unplug it an click on it on my phone.
I really need to start some research cause this stuff is pretty hard.
But thanks for your help again

I don't know how I missed your huge write up. More detailed than mine.
I figured the same, stock recovery. I'm not sure what steps he's taken before he wrote this thread.
OP if its the boot animation, on first boot it takes a long time. 5 minutes normally but give it 10 to be sure. If its the splash screen you may have issues. Is the safestrap splash coming up, where it says press menu
You may have to use rsdlite or the fast unbrick to restore your phone to stock. If you can write us EVERYTHING you've done in as much detail as possible, and exactly what is happenig now we can come up with a solution.
I think often all the various terms can be confusing to newcomers. I have a feeling perhaps that you still have a bootstrap installed and safestrap.

Long post but can't really shorten it.
32GB wifi Nexus, rooted and was running Liquid Smooth ROM and Motley kernel, went to update the ROM to rc9 version ,anytime I updated previously I never done full wipe unless using different ROM, anyway flashed the ROM and the gaaps with it and rebooted, immediately and prompted to me to use either apex or Holo HD I choose Holo HD got error saying system ui not responding, tried apex and got the same.
I was on the main screen but couldn't access it, yet I could pull down and enter into settings, everything else looked to be ok, so rebooted back to recovery and tried fixing permission, rebooted and got the same so I though I'll be just restore my nandroid backup, to my astonishment all the data had been wiped, I didn't do a wipe at all so I'm baffled how this happened.
Anyway I done a factory reset and rebooted and went through the setup, got the same system ui not responding, went to settings which could still access, apps and un installed both Apex and Holo HD noticed that Liquid Smooth rc9 had installed but instead of showing the cm kernel it still showed motley kernel.
Back to recovery, factory reset twice, wiped cache and dalvik, rebooted, went through set up process, same system ui error again, went to settings, erased all data, tablet rebooted, set up process same again, system ui, so I'm getting worried so back to recovery and this time I selected format system, data and sd, card and now I think I've completely fuc#ed it up as it just hangs at the Google screen and has stayed like that for over 30 minutes.
Previously asides from the occasional force close issue in the 2 months I've had the Nexus not really had a problem with it and whilst I'm no developer or techy geek I'm certainly no noob when it comes to this type of thing but I'm very concerned now and hoping someone can be of assistance as I sold laptop and primary just use my Nexus (and Galaxy S3)
Thanks

Strange.. But I didn't understand well, after wiping /system, did you flash the ROM back ?
I think you should flash 4.2.1 factory image using toolkit or whatever, then root etc..again
No all the data had been wiped this is what is baffling me, I didn't do a factory reset I just flashed the ROM and gaaps, as I said initially it was the system ui error I was getting but I think I've fucjed it up by formatting the system, data and sd card as all I can see now is the Google screen at boot, I can still get into clock work mod recovery but I've exhausted all avenues as it were, is there any hope I can get it back working again?

That is what I've always done but all I can see is - start - restart bootloader - recovery mode - power off, and I cannot see anything for fastboot mode (unless I'm going blind)

First Download and install the fastboot drivers...Download the stock Image here:-
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
then hold volume-(Down) Button and while holding the Button power on the device..it will take you into the bootloader. Now conne4ct the nexus to your PC...Now extract the file you downloaded (the Stock image)..keep extracting the files till you get the system.img file.Use fastboot to flash that(the command):
fastboot flash system system.img
Boot into fast boot, push a stock image. Ta da. Easy stuff. The basics.

Ah..We were all new to this once..you will get the Hang of it..If you need further help please do let me know.Always happy to help.
I am unable to make permanent changes to my T679 Exhibit II and need some help. Here are the symptoms.
1. Any changes in Settings go back to previous settings after a power on/off cycle.
2. When attempting Factory Data Reset, the phone just turns off or seems like it's off (display is black).
3. Attempting to enter Stock Recovery results in the same black screen after the Samsung logo is displayed.
4. Tried flashing CWM 6.0.1.2 with ODIN. Although I get a Pass indication, I can't get into any recovery mode.
5. Tried flashing stock UVLG3 with ODIN. Although I get a Pass indication, The old Rom remains unchanged.
Otherwise, the phone seems to operate normally. I can make and receive calls, gps, bluetooth, and wifi works. Files written to an external SD card are okay. Files written to the internal SD disappear after a power on/off cycle.
Any ideas?
Hmm Odin is hit and miss, sometimes I have no problems other times it won't work at all

Tried ODIN again
Thanks for looking into the problem.
I tried UVLG3 with Odin again. Although, it says Passed, I'm not sure anything is getting written. Everything is finished writing at about 20 seconds after starting and then the phone is reset. At this time the phone's screen goes black. I'm not sure if the phone is off or what's happening. If I press the power switch, I'll get the Samsung logo and a normal boot up after about 13-14 seconds. On a regular power on sequence, I get the Samsung logo after about 5 seconds.
Keep trying cwm via Odin, I know I only had to do cwm once and it worked fine. Also make sure you have the proper drivers installed, a quick search of Google will help with that.

Odin again
I tried Odin again (many times) with a different tar file. With the new file, the time to complete all the writing takes approximately 4.5 minutes vice 20 seconds with the old file. There must be a glitch with the original tar or ops file. The file sizes are about the same, 600MB. The results are the same also... no change to the ROM. It's like the ROM is write protected. Even the clock starts off at the same time every time I power up the phone. Anyone have any ideas?
I would just do cwm the Odin stock is possible corrupt.

Do you mean flashing CWM with Odin? I've tried many different combinations but nothing works so far. The main rom doesn't change and I get a black screen when I go into recovery. Funny thing... when I'm in the black recovery screen, my computer will sense that the phone is there if I plug in the USB cable. Also, when I tried ADB, reboot or reboot recovery takes me to the black screen.
The only screens I get are download, memory dump, and the normal 2.3.6 operating system. No permanent changes can be made to the operating system and I can't get into recovery. When I write the CWM zip file to the internal SD, I can see it with my laptop and also with the Files app on the phone. However, the file disappears when I power the phone off and then back on. Like I said before, it's like everything is write protected.
When you are doing cwm via Odin it has nothing to do with your internal SD, you should save the Odin file to your computer, if you follow the instructions on the page you get cwm Odin file, you should have no problem, I just did cwm from Odin and it worked just fine. But if you miss a step you will still get a pass but in reality it failed. If it does not work for you then there is a problem on your device I have never ran into.

Sorry, I did not mean to say that I was trying Odin by copying the file to the internal SD. I was just trying to illustrate the read only characteristics of the phone. I've done Odin downloads before but the first thing that I tried to revive this phone was to copy the CWM zip over to the phone thinking that I would flash CWM and then reset/reflash the phone with CWM.
Since you can't do cwm flash. That's why I recommend you try cwm via Odin.

I did try it. I thought I mentioned that CWM via Odin only took about 4 seconds to do the write (I didn't).
I would like to mention that one thing does change... the clock/calendar does update (I thought it didn't). It doesn't keep any changes that were made to the phone (manually or automatically via network) before turning it off. I just noticed that when I turned it on today, the date was Aug 17, 2012. Yesterday it was Aug 16. So some changes are being kept.
There is a cwm flashable zip for stock recovery. Why not just use that? After the 2.3.6 update there is really no need for Odin with this phone.

Tried something different
I tried to gain root via ADB. I pushed and executed psneuter and also gingerbreak. The two programs seemed to execute (get several lines of messages for each program before stalling), though not to completion. Each one hung after executing partially. The funny thing is after a power off/on cycle, when I use adb again and navigate to the directory that I pushed psneuter and gingerbreak to (/data/local/tmp), the directory is empty. I don't quite understand why all changes made to this phone are just temporary. Any change stays only until the next power off/on cycle. Any ideas?

Just reread thread, my bad. I didn't catch that. Sorry.

I'm sure you guys get this alot, but unfortunately i have no idea what I did to my phone. I got my HTC one for Sprint in the mail today and already It's not responding. I unlocked it, and rooted it. Tried out a couple of ROM's, it was great until one gave me a problem. Then I tried to Restore a backup and bam now i can't even boot up. What do I do? Is my only option to Unroot/Relock. I'm sorry if this has been asked already or there is a different section I should post in, like I said I'm new to all this fun.
Thank you,
-Connor
Can you get in to the recovery screen? (turn back on while holding video volume down and power) if you can download a rom on you computer and you should be able to put it on your phones storage. Then reflash that rom.

Yeah I can still get into recovery and everything, except when i wipe everything and install a ROM it still wont get boot properly, its almost as if i didn't have a set up app and thats causing it to not even boot up. I am trying a new ROM at the moment, otherwise I'm out of ideas.

Use Hasoon2000s All in One toolkit for the HTC One along with the ADB Sideload functionality under advanced in TWRP to flash a new ROM to your Sprint HTC One.
