[Q] Unable to make changes - Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 4G

I am unable to make permanent changes to my T679 Exhibit II and need some help. Here are the symptoms.
1. Any changes in Settings go back to previous settings after a power on/off cycle.
2. When attempting Factory Data Reset, the phone just turns off or seems like it's off (display is black).
3. Attempting to enter Stock Recovery results in the same black screen after the Samsung logo is displayed.
4. Tried flashing CWM 6.0.1.2 with ODIN. Although I get a Pass indication, I can't get into any recovery mode.
5. Tried flashing stock UVLG3 with ODIN. Although I get a Pass indication, The old Rom remains unchanged.
Otherwise, the phone seems to operate normally. I can make and receive calls, gps, bluetooth, and wifi works. Files written to an external SD card are okay. Files written to the internal SD disappear after a power on/off cycle.
Any ideas?

Hmm Odin is hit and miss, sometimes I have no problems other times it won't work at all

Tried ODIN again
Thanks for looking into the problem.
I tried UVLG3 with Odin again. Although, it says Passed, I'm not sure anything is getting written. Everything is finished writing at about 20 seconds after starting and then the phone is reset. At this time the phone's screen goes black. I'm not sure if the phone is off or what's happening. If I press the power switch, I'll get the Samsung logo and a normal boot up after about 13-14 seconds. On a regular power on sequence, I get the Samsung logo after about 5 seconds.

Keep trying cwm via Odin, I know I only had to do cwm once and it worked fine. Also make sure you have the proper drivers installed, a quick search of Google will help with that.

Odin again
I tried Odin again (many times) with a different tar file. With the new file, the time to complete all the writing takes approximately 4.5 minutes vice 20 seconds with the old file. There must be a glitch with the original tar or ops file. The file sizes are about the same, 600MB. The results are the same also... no change to the ROM. It's like the ROM is write protected. Even the clock starts off at the same time every time I power up the phone. Anyone have any ideas?

I would just do cwm the Odin stock is possible corrupt.

Do you mean flashing CWM with Odin? I've tried many different combinations but nothing works so far. The main rom doesn't change and I get a black screen when I go into recovery. Funny thing... when I'm in the black recovery screen, my computer will sense that the phone is there if I plug in the USB cable. Also, when I tried ADB, reboot or reboot recovery takes me to the black screen.
The only screens I get are download, memory dump, and the normal 2.3.6 operating system. No permanent changes can be made to the operating system and I can't get into recovery. When I write the CWM zip file to the internal SD, I can see it with my laptop and also with the Files app on the phone. However, the file disappears when I power the phone off and then back on. Like I said before, it's like everything is write protected.

When you are doing cwm via Odin it has nothing to do with your internal SD, you should save the Odin file to your computer, if you follow the instructions on the page you get cwm Odin file, you should have no problem, I just did cwm from Odin and it worked just fine. But if you miss a step you will still get a pass but in reality it failed. If it does not work for you then there is a problem on your device I have never ran into.

Sorry, I did not mean to say that I was trying Odin by copying the file to the internal SD. I was just trying to illustrate the read only characteristics of the phone. I've done Odin downloads before but the first thing that I tried to revive this phone was to copy the CWM zip over to the phone thinking that I would flash CWM and then reset/reflash the phone with CWM.

Since you can't do cwm flash. That's why I recommend you try cwm via Odin.

I did try it. I thought I mentioned that CWM via Odin only took about 4 seconds to do the write (I didn't).
I would like to mention that one thing does change... the clock/calendar does update (I thought it didn't). It doesn't keep any changes that were made to the phone (manually or automatically via network) before turning it off. I just noticed that when I turned it on today, the date was Aug 17, 2012. Yesterday it was Aug 16. So some changes are being kept.

There is a cwm flashable zip for stock recovery. Why not just use that? After the 2.3.6 update there is really no need for Odin with this phone.

He can't get to recovery at all

Tried something different
I tried to gain root via ADB. I pushed and executed psneuter and also gingerbreak. The two programs seemed to execute (get several lines of messages for each program before stalling), though not to completion. Each one hung after executing partially. The funny thing is after a power off/on cycle, when I use adb again and navigate to the directory that I pushed psneuter and gingerbreak to (/data/local/tmp), the directory is empty. I don't quite understand why all changes made to this phone are just temporary. Any change stays only until the next power off/on cycle. Any ideas?

[Q] While flashing stock via odin screen gets blue/purple

Hey there,
Got my moms Galaxy over here. Thing wasn't updated and slow as hell so I thought I'd update it. Went through the Kies process but that didn't really work, phone just couldn't make connection despite what ever driver I used (win or mac, got both here).
So first things went haywire when I read somewhere to flash recovery I needed to do something via Heimdall. Did that with the command window and afterwards the phone got stuck in a bootloop (only the I9000+samsung repeating over and over again).
Then I tried flashing GB from samfirmware, which failed. All done through odin, the screen went purple at dbdata.rfs. So I went with stock froyo, from the androidworld.nl forums and same thing happens but now it's a blue screen at factoryfs.rfs.
What am I doing wrong?
Try flashing again via Odin and this time don't touch your pc while it is flashing. That yellow purple screen has happened to me while I was doing other things while flashing was going on in the background.
And check if your phone is i9000 or i9000+ and flash the their respective firmware .

Same thing, didn't do anything and screen went gray. This is so random for me, as flashing is SO easy with my own Desire but this thing is on a whole different level.
Try changing your Odin version to 1.82 and try again.

Actually did both already! The 1.3 was from the 2.2 pack from the Dutch forum. Got 1.82 from the samfirmware website. No luck yet
1.82 shows a bootloader function, do I need to have one of those files with it?

I was about to try this actually! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196179
Since the screwup started with Heimdall, might fix it with that?
Watch a YouTube video and see if you're doing everything properly.
What I do is
1. Go to download mode
2. Open Odin, select pit, PDA, phone, CSC files. And remember to check the re partition option
3. Connect your phone
4. Click start.

Maybe. I never used heimdall. Maybe you could try that.

Doing all that yeah, exactly in that order.
Hmmm. Then I guess heimdall is your only hope ,since it started the problem.

Hmm, in Heimdall it gets all the way up to MODEM @ 59%. Then it fails and crashes..
weird
[edit] buuuuuuuut I got android recovery back! okay now we have progress!
and now by adding the packaged zImage from CM have CM.. progress again!

Hm, no. It's a replacement cable (cheap) which I used for my Desire, no problem with that at all. Though it might be it indeed! Will be two days before I can get the original cable.
In the meanwhile I got CWM-based Recovery v.5.0.2.6 working.. while installing cyanogenmod it goes "checking blm status", then "install from sd complete".. a bit strange and it doesn't boot into the rom but into the recovery.

Switching back to the original cable fixed the problem for me. Hope it does for you as well, try that and tell us what happened!.
Can I still use Odin then, now with CWM recovery?
You can use Mobile Odin by Chainfire (look for it in the market), it works exactly as an Odin built-in your SGS with no need for PC.

Uhm, well I can't get really into any market as no rom will boot at this moment..
Guys, thanks for the cable advice! Could get my hands on a SE cable and flashed 2.3.5 stock through Odin. Happy that I didn't wreck my moms phone :')

[Q] Help: Flashed the bootloader of my Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 with the wrong binary

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000. Using Odin3 v3.04 I (accidently) flashed the Bootloader with the wrong binary. With the Auto-Reboot option selected on the Odin3, the device turned off and is not turning on again.
Before flashing, my Tab had the official Samsung GB 2.3.3 (P1000JPJPC if I am not mistaken).
Some threads suggest that I charge the Tab using the wall charger for 4 hours, and see if the battery icon appears on the screen or not, then connect the tab to the PC. I did that. I connected the Tab to the wall charger overnight. Nothing appeared on the screen. Then the next morning I connected the Tab to the PC, nothing happened. The PC does not recognize that there is anything connected on its USB port.
The Tab is not turning on. I've tried to press (and long press) almost every combination of the Tab's keys I could think of, but the Tab just won't turn on.
I guess I hardbricked my device (as explained in this thread)
I don't think I'll be able to apply the Unbrickable process explained here.
Having said that, my question is: Is there anything else I can do at home to revive my Tab, or do I need to send it to Samsung repair center?
-Adel
I think you brick it.

If you've completely killed your tab, what can be done to fix it. I have a similar problem with my tab in that it gets to the screen that says samsung galaxy tab and then stops there. I have been searching the net and have rooted the tab and then tried to flash firmware but i am struggling to get the tab to read the ext sd card with the firmware on it.I don't really know my way around this type f thing but have to figure it out because I can't afford to take it in to be repaired right now. Advise will be appreciated.

Can you boot to download mode? Can you boot to recovery, if so which recovery (stock or cwm).
Ave you tried Overcome method , as in my signature?

Hi Priyana,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, as far I could tell from reading up on it, I would guess mine is not bricked.
I can boot to download mode and to recovery - cwm (v3.0.0.5). I have tried downloading Overcome and anything else I thought might work but this is where I get stuck. I've wiped the cache and other things like that described on the net and on videos (actually this is what got me into this in the first place). When I copy a .zip file onto the external sd card and put it in the tab, I can't install the zip from the sd card because it can't find the directory I made. I'll have a look in your signature and see what I can find there but any guidance would be much appreciated.
Komplotter,
Yeah, I am not sure about cwm 3.0 accessing external SD.
Try using overcome restock, jump to page 7 PDF.
Flash stock, then overcome kernel.
That gives cwm 5.0

Hi,
I managed to get CWM 5.5.0.4 and get ICS installed in my tab by using two files (CF-Root-TAB7_XX_OXA_JQ1-v3.3-CWM3RFS and P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJPZ). I would still like to use Overcome and I have had a brief look at the installation guide. I'll have a more thorough look and then give it a shot. I see that there is a version 4.1.0. Would I use that in that same way as the 4.0.0 ROM, because the Overcome7_ROMv4_Wipe file won't extract (there seems to be a problem with it and I've downloaded it twice).
You don't need the overcome ROM.
Just GB stock safe and overcome kernel.

[Q] Application Download Froze Phone - Reboot Did Not Stop Download

Hi,
I have a situation here: How can I force my phone to stop trying to download a non-existent file if I cannot get past the password screen?
I was reviewing old downloads on my Captivate and instead of clearing the list I accidentally restarted a 0KB download that had previously failed over a year ago. I cannot recall what the app was but it was from xda-developers to my phone. I am running a rooted, stock Gingerbread phone that does have CWMod installed.
I have not been able to stop the download, turn off my phone, or use my phone since the download restarted about 8 hours ago. (I noticed when it was too late to do anything that the download size is 0 KB.) The Download icon (Green arrow pointing down) just blinks and blinks but nothing is downloading. All other standard icons are displayed normally (Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G, Battery, Time). I am unable to power off the phone using the Power Button. I have to pull the battery. I have tried:
1) Pull battery to force reboot the phone. Reinstall battery. Power On. --- This did not work. Phone reboots to password pattern entry screen and resumes the download during the media scanning portion of boot before I can enter my password. (I can outline the pattern but never get past that point.) Cannot power off the phone using the Power button.
2) Pull battery, replace battery. Use 3-button CWM boot to recovery. Got to recovery screen. Scrolled up and down to make sure I was really there and then settled on "reboot system now" from the "Android system recovery <3e>" screen. Rebooted and failed at same point as above in #1.
3) Pull battery, remove External SD card, replace battery, Power On --- This did not work. Same as above in #1.
4) I am currently waiting for the battery to die just to see if that makes any difference.
I have not modified the phone in any way except to root it and install some apps (CWM, Battery Recalibration, etc.) that were not available in the market. I am fairly sure that CWM Backup contains a complete back-up of everything, but I do not want to screw anything else up by selecting "apply update from sdcard" (assuming that will just reinstall all my original software - sorry, this may be obvious to everyone else here.)
I have no idea what else to try and would be extremely grateful for any suggestions.

My guess is that uninstalling w/e triggered it might fix your problem. Otherwise, I'm really not sure other than Odin KK4 but should be able to fix it without it.

4-2ndtwin, Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I had found your links last night and downloaded the 1-click back to i897uckk4 with no bootloaders.
When I saw your reply I put my phone in Download Mode using [Vol+]+[Vol-]+[Plug in micro-USB cable]. So, I was at the "Digging Android screen" that shows "Downloading.... Do not turn off Target!!!!!"
I then started the Odin 1-click and my PC did not recognize my phone. I left Odin 1-click running, unplugged my phone from the microUSB and then plugged it back in. Phone came up in Odin as: Yellow Background "0:[COM7]". I clicked START. Odin executed as follows:
<ID:0/007> Added!!
<ID:0/007> Odin v.3 engine (ID:7)..
<ID:0/007> File analysis..
<ID:0/007> SetupConnection..
And, it does not appear to be doing anything. Phone remains on Downloading....
Please advise further. How should I go about starting this over?

I had been rooted prior to this process, but now SuperOneClick 2.3.3 just hangs on my i897 with Stock Gingerbread 2.3.5 UCKK4. Is my phone unrootable with KK4. I saw the thread "Rooting I897 2.3.5 stock" and the kernel you posted in #10 Reply, but isn't there a way to root the stock 2.3.5 UCKK4?
Thanks again for your help. This was easier on FROYO. Without root privs my Titanium Backup is not doing me any good as I can't recover anything without root rights.

I'm not certain but it might be called update.zip, because if I remember that's the only name that will flash in the stock recovery. As for finding it, just try searching for update.zip. it should be on the root of the sdcard(no folder) because that's the only way I thought it could install. Any ways I'm probably wrong but at least you can try.

i tried that too. it was unsuccessful. im almost out of ideas. does anyone have a clue about multi csc code that can automatically apply upon booting into stock recovery and then make it automatically reboot the phone?

I'm not sure really what CSC code is but I think your talking about stock Odin flash able package. That should get you back to stock and flash the stock recovery and wipe everything. However i think it will bootloop after it flashes so you will have to boot into recovery and wipe data. If so check out the wiki. There is all the info you need. I have another idea though. I haven't done this myself but you should be able to push a clockworkmod recovery.img to the phone from a terminal if you have adb also in the wiki. I can't view your pic because I don't have a Facebook but maybe someone else can. Good luck

That is the stock update pushed by Samsung from what it sounds like. Also sounds like a data packet might have dropped during the downloading of it causing a bad install. For simplicity get cwm Installed and boot thru that and flash from cwm. Wiki has all the info needs.
Wiki please read completely on rooting and install of cwm. Suggest 6.0.1.2 version. Personal preferences on that.

Problem solved. I just randimly pushed the 3 buttons on the phone before the rebooting part came up in the script and finally got the menu, took may tries to get to that point but as soon as I got to that point, I was quick to install clockworkmod successfully. Now problem is gone. Hope this thread maybe helps someone else

I have a similar problem. Which 3 buttons are we talking about? Power+Home+VolUp?
Easiest way, take out battery, push volume up and power, insert battery while holding, when Samsung appears release only power, when the android guy with package appears press menu
Sent from my SGH-T679 using xda app-developers app
Make sure you push the "Menu" capacitive button (left in the row of four buttons below the screen) when you see the green Android guy and the box. That will get you into the stock recovery menu.
I had to reboot into recovery a couple of times because I missed that part. What a pain!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 (SGH-i957) Soft Bricked...

I am looking for some serious help, I rooted my Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G LTE (SGH-i957) through the instructions that I found on this site by first installing Clockworkmode Recovery and then installing Jelly Bean 4.1.1 using Odin. Everything seemed to work fine with this, but then I decided to go one step further and load a over clocking kernel via Odin to increase my Processing speed. This process went fine through Odin and then after the auto reboot it all fell apart... the tablet will now only periodically display the first and second samsung logos and then just go blank or will display the battery icon with power off and plugged into the PC. Either way I have been unable to access the Boot screen or the Download screen...
IS THERE A FIX TO THIS? or am I just finished?
I have tried the "One Click Unbrick" program with no results and Odin intermittently recognizes the device is connected to the PC as the Tablet cycles through what appears to be an 1 second long boot up attempt.
Looking for someones brilliant idea haha...
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!
Wrong section, but here goes. I'm no expert but Samsung devices are notoriously hard to eff up beyond fixing.
Can you get back into your recovery? I would do that, do all your normal wipes and reinstall a rom with its stock kernel.
If that doesn't work well then, I'd say Odin back to stock. If it's just a soft brick fixing it shouldn't be a problem.
Of course someone else who knows what they are doing could chime in here lol.

You flashed a hc kernel on a 4.x system. This is a gaurenteed soft brick. Just odin back to stock through download mode.

I would love to do exactly what your suggesting but I am so far unable to access the download mode using the pwr and vol keys as normal... also where can I get a stock kernel as I was looking for one for hours yesterday with no luck? Do you have any suggestions on how to re-access the download mode in my current situation. Thank you for you suggestions thus far!
If you have a complete TWRP backup from before you flashed the OC kernel, just reboot into recovery and restore boot. That'll replace the HC kernel with what you were running before. That'll save you the effort of going through the entire process again to get back to JB.

Thank you for your advice and at the current time I am unable to access the recovery/boot/download screens... if I could get to that then we are back in business... I am looking for suggestions on how to regain access to that area first and then I would like to follow the advice for you all from there the stock kernel direction first...

Thank you for your response, so far Odin only picks up the device for a second before it disappears again and keeps repeating the cycle over and over agian. It is as if the Tablet keeps attempting a reboot cycle but fails to initialize the booting process? I don't know if I am making any sense to all of you that are much smarter than I at the stuff.
I am trying to time the start of Odin to the point that when it connects to the device that it is also recognizing the device at the same time... Kinda poking in the dark here as I am out of solutions...
The tablet attempts a reboot every 45 SECS and it recognized for only 3 SECS... Thoughts??
You need to get it to stop rebooting and into download or recovery mode. Try every button combo possible. If you hold power down for ten seconds it should shut off

Hold down the volume button near the power button as it boots to get into download mode... the other volume button will take you to recovery.

I have tried every key combination possible with no results the only thing the tablet does is do a quick single vibrate just like it does when you power it on and it boots up just without the actual booting process... and when the tablet is plugged into the PC it displays the battery symbol with the star bright icon over it like its thinking about charging but to my knowledge does nothing beyond that as far as charging is concerned. But it does do the single vibrate once every 45 secs as if it was booting up and is recognized on the PC through Odin for only 3 secs... not sure where to go from here now??
Hold the volume buttons down don't just press them. Also try button combos but instead of hitting power plug your charger in and out to get it to reboot.

Had these issues back in Nov when I tried to move up on twrp. Success to real download came when I used 10.1 tab button comnands

What are the tab 10.1 button commands?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Humm.. Didn't write them down. Goggled "samsung 10.1 tab" and found the set I used. Same three buttons but different ways to press. Won't hurt to try because all that is left in this case is a $50 jtag job and two weeks.

Does Odin recognize your device? I would try to flash the factory firmware with odin. You can get it at sammobile.com for the i957

If Odin doesn't recognize it and it doesn't turn on it's dead.
