new to N7 - Nexus 7 General

yay, my dad got my a 32gb for xmas! anywho I'm really liking it and the responsiveness of AOKP so far! i have to say, i had the most frustrating time rooting it though (i'm no noob to rooting anything btw), never had so much trouble. the rootkits weren't able to adb to my tablet and were giving me problems for about 3 hours. i finally said "**** it" i'll just unlock with fastboot and put twrp on it the manual way (which only took about 3 minutes).
anywho! i've been on jelly bean for a few months now on my sprint sgs3 (4.1.2), so i'm not new to jellybean at all. but, i am new to 4.2.1. is that quick settings pulldown thingy new to 4.2.1 or is that nexus 7 feature that most roms have? i find it quite annoying since i usually use my right thumb to pull down the notification bar, but often find myself not reaching far enough left to avoid pulling down the settings bar. are there ROMs that give us the option of moving those settings widgets back to the notification menu or disabling the quick settings menu? im on AOKP and haven't seen it yet.
im really looking forward to trying out all the different roms that are available!

It's new to 4.2.1. Hope you like it.

Yea, setting up the drivers for it were a *****, had a hard time on two computers at work then used Wug's toolkit and installed the drivers manually. I did have to manually reboot into fastboot to install the drivers and reboot after all the drivers were all installed, but in the end that was the best way I found to do it; had no errors and it did warn that I may have to reboot for all to work correctly.

Go to the dev section and get the true tablet ui, and flash in custom recovery. The single notification/settimgs bar will be combined again, but at the bottom.

Welcome to the N7. I personally love the double pull down. Give it some time, it'll grow in you. In FD AFR I have the CM10.1 settings on my Galaxy Nexus to behave the same way. It takes a day or two to get used to it though

rom links dead
I fixed the links. All links for the ROM and Gapps are posted on the Downloads page of my site from now on. Just follow the link.
I just switched back to Hanger's ROM from CM9 and I must say, even though it doesn't get as high of benchmarks, it feels a whole lot snappier and there seems to be 0 lag in his ROM. Very pleased and will probably use it as a daily driver now. Thanks a bunch for your hard work. Hope everything in your family is OK now.

Thank you
I've learned after years of computer use and building and repairing them that benchmarks don't always mean anything. Benchmarks rarely test the average performance that a user will experience.

I'm still getting an internal server error when I try the link. Maybe it's just me.
Edit: I just went www.Hanger84.net/rom downloads and it worked fine for me.

Links should be working...yet again. Dunno what the hell is cause the links to get screwed up, unless someones deliberately messing with them...
I just went to ad fly homepage and manually entered the download code or whatever to the end of the URL. Worked for me.
Rom ui looks awesome. Running smooth so far. Little bit of keyboard lag but that's par for the course with ics from my experience. Can tell you put a lot of time into this.

Hanger doesn't check this thread regularly; if you have a "bug," see OP and report it in the bug tracker so it can be addressed in the next update.

Did you make sure and do a full wipe first? You didn't by chance restore data with TBU did you?
I've been running this ROM for weeks and I don't have either bug on my install.

Love the ROM but have some lag...
I'm having lag to the point of frozen. I've had to pull the battery about 4 times in the last 3 days. It's not related to USB issues since I'm not plugged in when it happens. The apps (not any in particular) seem to overload the phone's ability to process. If I'm lucking it reboots - otherwise it's a battery pull.
I did restore data using TBU and I'm using the "lazy" kernel configuration.
Other than that I really love this ROM. Seriously. It has every buzzer and whistle I could hope for and they all work.

Custom ROM breakthrough for Android?

So, been wondering for a while. When will the next big "Customized" ROM occur? We've already gotten MIUI and its pretty cool, but wouldn't you want to see something new? Something not based off of iOS or Android in general but still able to to run on Android? Something fresh, new, never before seen? I've no idea what it would look like or how it would run, but maybe you guys do? A "Wish list" if you will, the appearance, how it preforms (keep in mind Hardware limitations of various phones), etc.
I guess I can (dream) start:
-The next potential Cyanogenmod but appears nothing like your standard Android OS
-Running on ICS and JB?
Just bored and I wanna see what some people can come up with. Maybe if a talented developer or a group of them could come together to pull something off? (One can only imagine)

There's a limit to what a developer can do with the Android source code, especially with a biannual release schedule. I'm not sure there will be anything radically different any time soon. If Google switches to one major update a year it might be possible.
I've always thought ParanoidAndroid looked cool but never tried it. It's a tablet hybrid ROM for phone.

If you mean Sony's XCMB it probably won't happen. They aren't exactly fans of outside development.
Something like Windows phone? The UI I mean, its pretty "outside the box" a ROM that's "never before seen" A status bar that is accessible via swiping from the left or right? A Facebook friendly ROM? (Will never happen unless FB releases source code) Let your ideas flow!

and i put cyanogenmod on my phone because of the extended functionality and settings whilst still having the vanilla experience.

built in pie control (i like it better than lmt), more configurations for the status bar including making it clear, ability to change lockscreen shortcuts without an app like widgetlocker, being able to add or delete whatever i want from the system/app folder, cpu and screen adjustments (kernel), ribbons (i like it better than sidebar), adaway, and a bunch of other reasons.
I rooted Samsung and HTC phones in the past just to get rid of (freeze) the crapware / bloatware that could not be disabled.
I have no need to root the Nexus 4 as it's fine just the way it is.
I was a flash-a-holic in the past but that phase passed. I think the last custom ROM I used was over a year ago on my Galaxy Tab 10.1

Mine is still unmolested, but I'm not sure how long that will last. I've had it for a month, but I miss some of the very simple additions like quick reply from status bar.

Haha, sweet deal. I haven't found any bugs yet. Working my way down the settings menu. Going to install again with some gapps this time so I can test the reverse lookup, etc. I'm not sure about needing to flash root or not yet, as I couldn't install a root app due to lack of play store. I'll report back in a few minutes. Downloading the mini modular package from PA. ~85MB. Shouldn't be too long.

True, I just went with the first small package that came to mind. Okay so root does need to be flashed after the ROM and gapps.
So far I found 2 things.
1. Quick Setting tiles > style > transparency goes from a flat gray (normal) at 0%. Once you get it to 50% it will be come slightly transparent. 51-100% transparency will just make it turn flat black with no transparency. Not sure if it's meant to be like that but I can see through them on other ROMs. Not a big deal though.
2. I'll try again with slim gapps, but I can't use nearby places lookup. Doesn't work even after toggling in settings. But that might be a gapps issue so I'll check and see.
This ROM is quick. I like it a lot. So that's the only issues I noticed so far, everything else was working good. Well polished for the first release on this device. Honestly I don't think it even needs an Alpha/Beta tag. No reboots no SoD. Feels like its ready for primetime. all in all it would take more time to list what isn't working rather than what is which is what I did. No force closes, etc. Ready for a daily driver. I'm going to stick with it.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Edit: would you ever consider SuperSU over SuperUser? I know some don't like it because it isn't open source (last I heard) but it doesn't give me problems with some apps like superuser.

This is probably a dumb question (not a lot of rooting/dev experience here) but how do I get that RTL feature to work. I have a Nexus 6 running Android 5.0, new as can be, and looking to help my normal-sized hands by putting the back button on the right.
By the way, just to give some helpful advice for one-handed use of a phone this size: Nova Launcher, Swiftkey (right-sided mode), and I just ordered the Minisuit Tactic Handstrap Wallet (on Amazon, $8) and it looks like it'll be super thin/flush with phone (or case) and allow me to put my finger(s) through for tethering. Yes, I know that these phones are large and meant to be used that way, but Android is awesome for customization and you can do just as much with the exterior of the phone as well
I just want the option to move the buttons closer together, that would be great
