what is wrong with my computer screen? - Off-topic

I've had my laptop PC, the HP Pavilion dv6-2190us (quad-core since long before!) since March 2010, and it has worked fine until 2 weeks ago, when intermittently, white and colored lines pop up on the screen, horizontal lines, and every now and then the screen goes white. I have never dropped the computer, got liquid into it. It does sit on a rug in my room, tho idk if thats causing the problem. Its always plugged in and has always been plugged in. What could the problem be with my computer? I've attached a picture of what happens. I've tried installing the latest drivers from Nvidia, tried cleaning up the hard disk, uninstalled old problems, restoring original graphics drivers, and the health checks on the computer itself are good. What do I do?

Your answer is right here. Read carefully.

Post in the correct thread.
But could be the LCD flex cable going bad, or the LCD itself.

We have a computers thread. Link's already mentioned.
But this sounds like a malfunctioning video card. You said it's sitting on a rug? Videocards, and computers in general, do not like heat! This includes a lack of ventilation.

Have you ever opened it and cleaned it ?
Those things get filthier than a catholic schoolgirl and start to have performance issues (including overheating from dust build-up - which can cause component failure if you let it go too long) if you don't give them a good cleaning every now and again.

If that's an Nvidia 230M it's starting to go.
I had a dv6 do something similar...sorry my friend.
HP will fix it for about 320 bucks which I believe is the momboard cost (or it was about a year and a half ago.)

Ah. I see that's a laptop. I was looking at it and thought it was two pictures.
They can still use a cleaning (they still get really dusty in there), but much harder to replace a failing GPU if cleaning it out won't work. On the rug could have contributed to overheating/failing as well. I used to put a sketchbook under my laptop when I had it, so that it could get some air circulation.
If you haven't removed the battery, that can also cause overheating issues. When I'd have my laptop plugged in for extended periods, I'd remove it. They have overcharging protection, but it can fail and even start a fire.
If you're using it mainly at home and not moving it, I would suggest building a desktop in the future - much easier to clean and replace parts (and much cheaper for the same level of power).

I just ran the 3DMark Vantage and not a single flicker/problem? I did hear the fan VERY loud during it tho, the underside is ultra-hot, and I removed the battery during the test. And I'm not getting a desktop: I need the portability.

You said "always been plugged in", that doesn't exactly sound "portable" to me.
Open it up, clean it, see if there's dust or other detritus, anything's loose (doesn't sound like a loose connection, but good to check), or looks bad. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, you'll have to bring it to someone who is. I'd bet there's a ton of dust in the GPU fan, causing it to overheat and fail.
It's also possible the PSU is also crap/crapped out and is causing overheating and failure - dust, old age, and strain can cause this and it's unfortunately not something you can deal with on your own unless you're trained to do so (I'm a big advocate of doing things yourself, but since it can kill you more readily than other parts, best to avoid it). A PSU can fail due to overheating, and it can cause irregularities in voltage, which can cause issues/total failure.
Best case would be it's just dusty. I've seen this clear up with a good cleaning, so I think there's a good chance, at least.

You have a short. It's between the keyboard and your chair.

I hate how people jump to conclusions for the most expensive fix. Plug in an external monitor. If it's green then it's the card, if not it's what I said in the first place. Source? Years of experience

How do I fit a new mini-usb port?

Hi - I seem to have knackered my mini-usb port a bit (probably by accidentally sticking my stylus in it).
I can get a replacement one on eBay, but it doesn't come with any instructions. Does anyone know where I could find instructions to fit it? Or is it something that would need a soldering iron (which I don't have) or something too tricky for a clumsy oaf like me?
Thanks
Dan
I'm pretty sure you're stuck with the soldering problem. Hopefully I'm wrong, I have a friend that needs to replace his.

Oh no! I'm not getting into that, but so far it's looking like it'll cost £50 to get it fixed if I send it off to somewhere. At that price I'd prefer to live with a bit of a dodgy connection...

As well as an el-cheapo cradle with battery recharge bay IF the battery no longer recharges in the phone. If dancj was not proficient at soldering, he could get that part done by someone who is but given the 'clumsy oaf' statement perhaps it's best for any work on the phone to be done professionally. Bluetooth dongles are cheap if the PC usually sync'd with doesn't natively have bluetooth but it'd be worth dancj having a good read of the manual to determine how to set up the connection first if this is new ground - this particular clumsy oaf found it quite tricky figuring out which side the connection is initially configured and initiated from until reading the manual

As mentioned in my post above, a cradle with battery charging bay gets around that. They're very cheap too (Here are the details of what I have). If you add to that a Bluetooth dongle for about £15, you're still well on the right side of the £50 repair cost.
Sorry - I misunderstood.
I have a kind of workaround at the moment which is one of these 3 way adaptors.
The plug for this one is a bit different and grips the bit inside the USB socket and still gives a good connection. I could keep that in the car and then have one of those cradles at home and at work...

I've got something that looks like that as well. I guess if its plug connects well with your phone, there's no reason why you couldn't use it for mains charging as well, although I don't know if I'd trust a slightly damaged USB port to not deteriorate. Irrespective of what happens with the port, that cradle and spare battery could still be utilised.

i don't know if this is what Flying Kiwi is talking about, but you can also have one spare battery and a battery charger, and whenever one of the two batteries is depleted, replace it with the one that you charged with the battery charger, and so on. just keep that spare full one in your pocket.
Yeah that is an option. I really don't want to have to resort to physically changing my battery every day though.

Then you could get one of those big thick high capacity batteries with a matching 'swollen' battery cover and you'll only have to change it every second or third day. The downside is it doesn't look as good and it weighs more but it would still be cheaper than a £50 repair. Which is more important, saving a few quid or fixing it properly and having full functionality back?
If it comes down to that I think I'll swallow the £50 repair fee. At the moment I'm still torn between trying to get it repaired cheaper or living with a dodgy connection

I just looked at this thread and realized over 1,600 people have looked at my dock. Wow. I have been using it for several months as an alarm clock in the dock every night and so far no heat issues. It has been working out very well. After seeing how many people were interested in a dock I think I should have offered to make and sell them. I still could, but I imagine the market for a new dock for this old phone is dwindling.

Ok, if you want one I can make one. I wouldn't expect to be making very many of these so each one could be customized. That one was made in pine which I stained with a pecan stain. I have since come across some walnut boards. I could make one in walnut which would look much better than pine. If you want some other type of wood I can see about getting some. I used a micro to standard USB cable which allows me to either plug it into the computer or into the standard dinc AC adapter. I can also change the design with more or less androids, your name or some completely different design, even a square or sculpted top rather than a round one.
If something in the neighborhood of 50 bucks is in your price range let me know along with any specifics of the design you want.
And, of course, for everyone elses' enjoyment I can post a picture here when it is done.
How do you have your usb plug secured in there? I've been trying to come up with a design for one of my own since I always use my phone as my alarm clock, but I've not come up with a good way to get the plug to stay in place so that the phone can be plugged in easily.

I placed the phone in the holder then I plugged the usb connector into it through the other hole I had cut for it. Then I put some gorilla glue around the plastic part of the plug being careful to keep it away from the end. Gorilla glue expands and fills the space around the plug. I lightly clamped the phone in place overnight, but a couple hours should be enough, and then when I removed the clamp, the plug is secured in place exactly where it needs to be.
Cool idea, looks great!

[fix] An easy way to solve the screen flicker with just a scotch tape

Won't be.I have studied the wifi antenna for several years.Wifi antenna has many types, some of them like omnidirectional antenna,it‘s RF line and GND is not connected.
I've just done this. So far, wifi strength fine and there is definitely less flicker.
However, this its light outside and it's much easier to see the flicker when it's dark, so I'll let you know.
Thanks for the idea, and hopefully this works!

Oops. One off on the copy and paste:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29759410&postcount=295
So this makes me wonder if the common issues could perhaps be with the back of the device. I've seen people with screen warping issues caused by a warped back, and now there's a fix for flickering by modifying the back.
I'm sort of curious to see what switching the back of a flawless device with a device with flickering does.
Edit: I also remember someone saying awhile back that they pushed on a certain part of their device to make the flickering disappear, which makes me even more curious if it's something to do with the back..
Another edit: The device would not flicker when the back was completely removed. Obviously, without the antenna, the signal was very weak, but the flickering would disappear. As soon as I placed the back on again, the flickering returned.

Only engineering theory is the antenna is moving the voltage for ground w/ the power surges when it uses full wifi power and this is affecting the ground level for the rest of the tablet including the backlight. By putting the tape there, you're preventing the wifi antenna from affecting ground level, though I don't understand why it doesn't affect wifi power (I'd think that by doing this, you're lowering the transmitting power of the wifi antenna).
Any other EE's confirm this might be what's happening?
Interesting workaround at least...it's basically a hardware version of the software workaround I theorized was possible if they could control the power transmission level of the wifi chip/antenna...
This fix makes the difference, its like night and day... thanks to the op

Not sure what you're talking about in "disconnecting ground," but the ground plane is pretty important for PFA antenna design. (I'm assuming that's what the N7 has, as there still isn't a good photo of the ants themselves in any of the teardowns.)
BTW, funny, but I made that very same antenna in your pic, along with the PVC pipe cover. Didn't work too well as an omni. I soon ditched the DIY route when I found surplus WISP ants to be much more effective, and less hassle.
BTW, a good read for wifi design is "Antenna Design for Mobile Devices (Wiley 2011)."

I'm going ahead and doing the same. It does look like modifying the back cover will fix the flickering issues, but after reading a bit on how the ground effects antenna performance, I'm a bit wary about it in the long term. It'd be one thing to just tighten a screw, but to disconnect a wire with a function isn't okay to me.
I've pasted some pages out of the abovementioned wifi design text on the effects of ground plane on mobile antennas. It's probably too technical for many, but you can get the gist, which is that the ground plane is a "big deal" in antenna performance.

From the pics it seems clear to me that it boiled from the inside. My guess is that while the device will have overcharging protection, the battery was probably faulty and didn't signal it was fully charged.
It was reported in China, where we know quality standards aren't as high as 'the west' so a faulty battery may more easily slip through, perhaps even deliberately to clear the factory floor.

Off topic....with regards to the myth of quality products and China, you get what YOU specify and pay for, you want it cheap and below standards to sell in "the west", they'll make it for you, you want an iPad, iPod, iPhone, Panasonic G2 etc etc etc, they'll make that for you also.

I think all batteries are made by only a couple of manufactures in the world. Battery tech hasn't changed in how long?! I doubt this was a blowout. My N7 hardly gets real warm when taxing the GPU and Charging (it does get warm though, but not burn hot).
I agree with the charger thing... or a microwave thing... or someone looking for attention.

Off topic....with regards to the myth of quality products and China, you get what YOU specify and pay for, you want it cheap and below standards to sell in "the west", they'll make it for you, you want an iPad, iPod, iPhone, Panasonic G2 etc etc etc, they'll make that for you also.
For the record can you tell me something of quality in electronics that the west actually makes?
That wasn't a challenge, just a look a the whole situation comment.

In my home town there is a small company that makes high end audio equipment for radio and TV stations. Everything is hand made, the circuit boards, everything. It's a family owned business, they have some big customers that include the BBC. I had a summer job there once when I was 14 or 15. (all true when I was there, it's over 13 years ago now, but I have no reason to think much has changed in that regard).

It's pretty specialist and obviously not mass produced, but the equipment is near indestructible, they were quite proud to show me the results of extreme test lab.
I did some pretty mundane jobs, bring this, fetch that, measure some cables etc., but the best thing about it was I could use the company swimming pool!

Battery Swelling Causing Screen to Bow Out

So the other day I noticed my screen was starting to get flush with the sides of my case. Upon closer inspection, I noticed my screen was starting to bow out!
Recently, I had been having some really strange battery life where the phone would die at around 50% or so, and when I would reboot the phone, it would read at about 5-10%. So I'm assuming the battery is defective, and it's beginning to expand and become bloated.

Has anybody else had this issue? I haven't found many people so far with this issue. This is going to be my second exchange to T-Mobile; one more and I'm going to try a different device...
Don't charge it. Take a backup. Switch it off and send it back.
You really don't want the battery to vent and possibly have thermal runaway. Lithium batteries can fail quite spectacularly.
If you must charge it, put it far away from anything flammable and have a bucket of water ready.
Thanks... didn't realize the dangers could be that catastrophic...
Vent with flames come to mind, return it to HTC
In the mean time keep it somewhere always from flammable materials, in case it goes bang, i kid you not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beautiful pics, they look very artistic but on a serious note, did you overclock, fastcharge, use a different charger or do anything with your phone out of the ordinary?

Haha, thanks. The only thing I've done is run the GE ROM from Bigxie with the bundled Tbalden kernel. I don't mess with overclocking, or any other enhancements since the phone works for me in every way. Just unlucky I guess!

Okay don't forget to first run your stock ruu and then lock your bootloader, not have it say relocked otherwise they will surely deny you warranty.
Well HTC are using the new lithium polymer batteries, they blow up and set on fire, just be carefull with charging it!

I was having the same battery issue with it dieing at 40 50% not the bloating though. I sent it to HTC repair in Houston and they replaced the motherboard and battery, works great now. Took about a week.

Ive seen a lipo battery go off, I used to fly pro radio controlled helicopters which also run on lipo batteries and watched a poor mans £1000 heli go up in flames and destroyed to pieces, theres no blowing it out when they go, its an acid fire, if your sending it through the post I would first get a lipo safe charge bag and put it in there before posting, it could go off at anytime once it starts swelling.

what if this phone does that when I have it to my face or in my lap, I'm sure that that will not end well
I did not think it was the battery until i started looking for what can make my screen pop out.
good thing I found this post or I would not have known about the flames & acid fire.
So thank you all for posting this info & saving my face/balls from acid fire

Personally, if my phone would do this, I wouldn't even bring it inside my home again. Unstable Li-ion batteries are very likely to cause a fire eventually.
