After cracking the screen on my Note 2 with a very short less than 2 foot drop I decided I needed to upgrade the protection on my phone. I had a Cruzerlite on there and I thought that was about as good as you could get until you started getting into the big bulky dual and triple layer cases. After looking over my options I picked up the Belkin Snap Folio case at a Verizon store today. Lots of things I like about it and a couple of things I don't. I wasn't sure I would like a folio style case as I think the cover would be a PITA. After a whole day I'm getting used too it, not saying I'm loving the flip open style case but it is growing on me. It does add some thickness to the phone, not as bad as a Defender or the like but more so that my TPU case. It is a little more difficult to pull out of my bluejeans (Levis slim cut) pocket because of the size, the soft leather body which is grippier, and the snap tab which will grab the edge of the pocket. I don''t know if thi will go away with some use but the snap closure curls up when it is used as a stand and obstructs the phone. Hopefully this will go away as I work and break in the leather. There is an indention for the home button on the cover so it lessens the chance of accidental presses waking the device. The leather is soft and the case has a good high quality feel too it. Although it does feel like a quality product don't confuse that for the feel of a premium product you will get some some of the more expensive leather cases available on the market.

There is a hard rubberized plastic shell that is fused to the inside of the leather folio case. I like this design because of the way all 4 corners are protected. The thick still leather body also adds quite a bit of protection and will help absorb the energy of a fall. I also like the security of the cover protecting the glass during a fall. My wife broke her GSII when it fell and hit a pebble sticking up out of the grass. The fit is perfect and all ports like up exactly. With the case closed you have access to the power button, USB port, and headset port. The headset port looks like it is partially blocked but that isn't the case. It is unobstructed and you will have no problems fitting any headphones. My Westones which usually have a hard time fitting into any case unmodified have no problems with this case.
Nice write-up... thx for posting. I've considered a folio case, but have one huge concern. Does the front cover easily fold all the way around to the back (so it's flat on back cover) to allow access to the volume rockers? I frequently use my Note2 in landscape mode (games, landscape typing, etc) and am curious if this case folds all the way back so phone can be held in landscape mode and access volume keys. Thx
Good review.
I am also interested to know if you can bend it all the way back.
DoctorQMM, you can with the official flip case serie and they are very durable. I see absolutely no sign of wear to the fold on mine after two intense moths of use! One word of warning however. The inside of the white one gets very dirty.
Zero problem folding all the way back on itself. I use it that way the majority of the time
Folded back on itself.
A bit fugly for my taste, but it appears to be quite functional.
I prefer vertical flips as it seems more natural (to me) to let the cover fall and talk. With side flips you have to bend them for sure. As this one has a speaker cutout I guess you can always close it after the call is initiated, and then hang up with the power button.
Two major flaws tho... once again they didn't bother to add a cutout for the notification light, meaning that if the phone is in the desk and closed, you will never see events. And they also didn't bother to cut for the volume rocker on the left side. I'm starting to think that if I want a proper case I have to learn some leathersmith skills and buy some equipment. Maybe create a BeoCase business. /heads to kickstarter.com
I have one of these cases. Highly recommend!
This is my signature....
I'm starting to think that these cheap tpu cases are not good for even small drops. I wonder if it would be appropriate to start a thread on which cases can actually survive a drop and which cases do not. Doesn't matter if it's a $2 ebay case or a $60 defender.
Not a big fan of these Folio cases because they expose too much of the top and/or bottom.
Does the flap that keeps the cover down become annoying while trying to use the phone?

Don't notice it normally. Now that I have use it a little it sits flatter when using the stand feature so it isn't that bad any more and doesn't get in the way.

I mentioned that my screen cracked with a TPU case in the OP, which probably prompted that post.
Sorry to bump an old thread but I'm wonder how the inner case is affixed to the leather outer. Is it just glued? I like this case but am concerned the inner will eventually come apart from the outer.
Thanks

I hate the cases that cover the bezel and basically leave only the screen viewable. I find they add bulk, get in the way of your fingers sometimes, etc. This is the thread for cases that don't do this. Preferably these cases have only 2-3 "layers." A lid (or not), the tablet, then the back, and the holding mechanism is typically kind of invisible or unobtrusive. I find it's generally the fourth layer in the middle that goes on top of the bezel or on the back where there's a rotation mechanism that adds the unneeded bulk. Hopefully these cases still allow you to pocket your N7. Personally I'd love some kind of TPU case with a kickstand, but no luck so far.

So far these are all basically Folio cases.
All those case are exactly the same except for the Kay's. Theres a few different ones one ebay too. Im waiting for a nice slim case too, one like the poetic smart case.

This poetic case differs slightly as it has a hand grip and elastic strap to hold the case closed.
I wonder how it compares to the kayscase one you posted (particularly how the stand holds up to slight shaking on airplanes)

I've been looking at that one myself, nice and slim but too expensive for what it is at £24 inc del (ignoring the vastly over-inflated 'original' price it was never sold at). I'll wait and see what price it ends up being sold for.
I have the top one listed. The black. Works good. Adds quite a bit of thickness but comes off easy. I think I'll use it to snap on when I leave the house and run nekkid when at home.
The Smart Cover works very well and doesn't turn the screen off when folded behind. I was wondering what that little lanyard loop was for, stylus. Good to know. Again it is nice that this case can just pop off whenever you need and not requiring any extra effort to get it off like a sleeve or a tight fit. The N7 is pretty snug in there but comes off with little effort.
I have the slim Poetic Smart Case on order. I like a thin profile. So far I've tried a TPU case and this one. As long as the Poetic doesn't have some major flaw, I'll probably switch to that once I get it. Sure it's $20 but I spent $30 for my Ringke Slim for my Galaxy Nexus.
I have this one, which I just posted a review about, with pics:

I prefer the cases which allow the 360 degree rotation, so those will be a bit bulkier. Don't mind it though since I prefer the versatility over the slight bulkiness.

There are a few minor differences hence multiple links. Some are different prices, some will be out of stock, some have a stylus loop, some come in different colors, some have a differently designed speaker cutout, etc. So I didn't feel it was redundant.

I agree. I was hoping for a thread like this to pop up thank goodness
I also hate bezel covering cases. Hopefully more pop up.
I'd waiting on a nexus 7 version of http://www.incipio.com/BlackBerry-PlayBook-Cases-Accessories/Incipio-BlackBerry-PlayBook-Executive-Premium-KICKSTAND-Leather-Case.asp
Waiting for the MoKo to come out with more colors! Love this style but it would be perfect if it had a kickstand in the back for portrait mode. Not sure why anyone hasn't made one like that yet.
Please keep this thread updated! I'm still holding out on buying a new case until I find one that's just what I want (I already have a cheapo case protecting my N7 for the time being). Thanks!
I would like something that doesn't snap over the back cover but replaces it similar to what the galaxy note has since the back just snaps off. Here is an example of a very ugly one I can't find the matte black or white ones with a quick google search but they exist link. The only addition I would like to see is the tri fold front cover with magnet to make it a smart cover like this case. If the case had the same outside texture as the stock back that would be a bonus as well. I doubt we will get one though.
I have the poetic case ams and it works quite well.
It's still thin and pocketable while offering great protection due to the sturdy front cover.

I ordered the case on 20th August and it arrived yesterday 31st so not bad from HK to the UK signed for delivery.
The case is very slim, in one of the pics I've included a 5 pence piece for comparison, the case is almost exactly the same thickness as the coin at about 18mm closed.
It looks very smart and the chrome strip for the magnetic closure looks better than I'd expected. The case section is hard plastic like many others and has a soft neoprene style backing to it. The N7 clips in very securely (I've yet to figure out how to get it out again...) and is protected all round. All the cutouts are in the right place and nicely bevelled, the on/off switch and vol controls have their own cutouts which makes finding them easier than my previous case,
In the open stand position the nap of the cloth interior holds the N7 at the angle you want, nice touch. No auto on/off magnet, but that's just a lazy mans gimmick anyway and doesn't bother me as long as the switch is easy to get to. You can see in the second picture the speaker grill and the PU material the 'hinge' strap is made from, because of the way it's made there's a bit of rotational play to the cover when closed but not too much, time will tell if that increases or not.

Is it possible to fold the cover back completely, how does it look?
Yes it is possible, the cover folds back flat and stays flat without any pressure.
even cheaper
Found a cheaper one from the ausies for $13.4 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/ULTRA-SLIM-...ccessories&hash=item46078371f9#ht_6402wt_1194

Looks pretty much the same, except without the chrome strip as you say. the magnet is built in to the case so I assume there must be some metal strip in the cover to keep it shut. Auction doesn't give any details though.

hhmm, maybe that's why it's cheaper? or maybe there is a metal insert inside the cover that connects with the magnet.
I just got mine in today and I actually like it a lot. It has a nice soft leather feeling in hand and the plastic back feels quite sturdy. The tablet really clicks into the back solidly, it actually takes some work to remove it from the case. The construction is pretty nice, it has the felt on the inside of the lid and the plastic, the cutouts are nice (especially the separate power button) and the magnet holds it closed firmly.
The downsides are minor, the lid is a little oversized and doesn't lock into place when closed. It can wiggle and twist around some. Other then that it looks nice and feels nice, it compliments my bulkier Portenzo case well
I've found a good use for the chrome N7 strip, I bought an Appldea Maglus stylus and it has a strong magnet in it which holds it onto the metal very securely.

No. the magnet in the base is slightly raised so the chrome strip does not come into contact with the screen when closed. Use a screen protector anyway, they are so cheap it's daft not to.

I have this case as well, though I haven't written a review on it. My recommendation: DO NOT BUY.
First off, the biggest miss in this case is no sleep/wake magnet. On top of that, its difficult using the case as a stand for the tablet. Although the cover looks and feels good (almost like leather), $20 is way too expensive for something that is lacking a smart-cover feature, a mechanism to use it as a stand, and fake leather.

I have to disagree, Asus/Google very kindly provided us with an on/off button and I don't mind using it, I don't need a 2 cent magnet to do the job for me. I've also not had any problem using the case as a stand when I've wanted to, as explained above the nap of the cloth interior holds it nicely for me.
$20 is at the top of the cheaper end of the range but it's hardly bank robbery, I've bought a number of cheaper cases and all of them do the job to a greater or lesser extent but all of them look cheap compared to this one.
Each to their own though, ymmv etc. the world would be a dull place if we all thought the same.

thank you.
I was hoping they would make a case. I currently have a Defender on my iPhone 4. I wish they had come up with another solution for the home button. As it is designed there is a hole in the screen protector which can allow dust to get behind the screen protector.
Instead of the otterbox I think I will be going with a Seidio active case with clip and apply my own screen protector.

Well i am still waiting for the otterbox, I have looked at the Aegis and Seidio lineup and i feel they do have some design flaws, i know it wont matter for a lot of people but for me its a deal breaker, look at the back of Aegis or Seidio, the outer hard shell doesnt have any support at the bottom near the usb charger, so whenever you pull your phone from your pocket the rubber will get misplaced and pulled in different angles, because it doesnt have any support. There are a few videos on youtube complaining about that.
Thats not the case with otterbox, the hard shell pretty much encompasses the whole device.
just my 2 cents.

A lot of people like the Trident cases. I'm especially excited for the Kraken AMS, which has loads of accessories (car mounts, bike clips, etc). Trident seems to develop a wider range of cases for their phones, all of which are cheaper than the lower end otterbox.
The main advantage with Otterbox is the plastic screen cover, which is built into the case. This is a hit-or-miss, depending on the preference. For me, it is a big miss because dust will invariably get in behind the screen (especially if you work construction like me), forcing you to remove the case to clean the phone on nearly a weekly basis. After a while of taking the case on and off, the soft outer shell will lose its tension, and will start to flop off when you don't want it to. This has been a constant design flaw with Otterbox.
The other thing Otterbox has going for it is the full size holster. I use the holster all the time, so this used to be a plus. The problem is that the hard plastic clip is prone to breaking.
I now go with the Trident Kraken and SpiGen protector. I don't use the included belt clip, and instead I use a full pouch which fits the phone case and all. This has worked well for my Nexus, and should work well for the GN2 as well.
It is a matter of preference though. This is only my opinion, and lots of people are quite happy with Otterbox.
Actually it is 3 piece. The pics from the seller looks like a 2 piece but it is hard rubber, followed by a hard plastic front and back that snaps together. The finish on the rubber is not the smoothest. It looks like I got a used case. The finish on the hard plastic is okay. I check for roughness and sharpness before I snap it on the phone.
As far as protection, probably as well as an Otterbox, Seido or Trident but the fit and finish on the other cases are probably much better. Going to keep it for now since I need the drop protection. Volume and power port switch works well and the phone is VERY WELL protected. Also once you snap the case in, it is almost impossible to remove as you can see by the coin mark and the fingernail mark on the hard plastic. Thickness is about the same as the Casemate toughcase on my Epic 4G touch.

Notification light is not covered. You are correct, it is a very rugged case with a rugged finish. I have to wash my hand before eating since the case is probably made in China and the finish on the rubber is so "dull".
So far I have tried:
Samsung original flip cover: Not worth the $32 since it doesn't offer much protection. Thin, Sleek, sexy, well made, but no drop protection.
Samsung TPU protective case: Very nice finish, very thin, a tad slippery, but the rubber around the metal bezel is very tough material. Cons, not enough drop protection for front screen.
Poetic thick cover case: Covers the phone well, good drop protection but having that flip cover makes it a bit awkward to take picture.
I just might pull the trigger on that black Seido Active case if they don't have a color one soon. The Trident Aegis looks very nice and covers all the ports but not available for a while. Good price too at $25.
So far, the only accessory that I like is the LG HBS -730 stereo bluetooth headset. Decent bass once it fits in your ears, nicely laid out controls, voice confirmation on connect and disconnect, connects flawlessly each time. I find myself using the play, track controls often when in the car without the need to take my hands off the steering wheel to mess with the phone when playing music. Phone calls sound very clear to me and the reciever. The only cons is limited range for listening to music.
I had this case
dint like it and on the same day when I was taking it off it got broken
I had paid around 1000 Indian Rupee which is around 20$ including shipping
Have you tried taking it off the phone ?
If you ever need to do so , do it with caution as it may damage your phone (the effort of taking it off)

Yes, and I can confirm that it is a pain in the rear end. Do not attempt this with finger nails because they will break. THIS CASE IS NOT FOR YOU if you like to change case often. It is the hardest case to remove. Just because of that, I would not recommend it. The trick is to use a small flat blade screw driver, not to sharp so that it will pierce thru the hard rubber(pretty tough rubber). See the pictures. You have to pry the bottom cover over where it snaps with the top cover. So stick the screwdriver between the black and red part and pry the red part up and it will detach from the top cover.
Thank you!
I've bought this one, too. Once I attached it to my Note 2, it was well protected. Doesn't look any luxurious, but it does the protective job. Removing the case is a pure nightmare, unfortunately I broke two clips on left side while taking it off. It's still usable, but I won't attach it back again. Wouldn't recommend this case to anyone who will need access the battery, SIM card or memory card.
One more thing. If you're using micro USB charging cradle like I do, it's a no go with this case. It doesn't allow to fit the connector fully. It's fine with the actual micro USB cable, though.
In general, I'd prefer slim solutions likes of 1 piece of TPU (including covering the corners fully) or 2 pieces hard TPU (front and back).
I bought a sedio active , arrived today i like to go with black color n its looking nice on gray note 2

I'm not that great at prose. Bullet points for all of you!
Bought from here. Also comes in white and red.
Notes:
The great big DANGER sticker and Big Scary Laser sticker is something I bought separately.
Pros:
It's 6 freaking dollars!
Does not feel cheap
Volume/power buttons retain their 'click'
Reasonable protection
High lip for drop protection
Lip does not impede touching the edge of the screen
Stand actually useful (comfortable angle)
Slippery enough to slide into my pocket, grippy enough to comfortably stay on a table
Does not attract fingerprints at all
Fit is very tight, phone absolutely won't come out on its own
Feels comfortably rugged but not ridiculously so
Would not be afraid to drop the phone whilst in the case
Cons:
Volume/power buttons have very little definition on the case, very easy to accidentally press volume down whilst holding the phone
Stylus cutout could be a tad bigger
Larger headphone connectors may not fit
Larger microUSB connectors may not fit
Can be a little fiddly to get the phone out of the case due to tight fit
Neutral:
Stand only has one angle (I like it for the simplicity, but each to their own)
Stand feels a little flimsy (I don't think it will break unless someone smacks the phone down whilst standing)
No dust covers on the jacks (I personally like this as I hate having to remove dust covers when I want to plug anything in)
Wrapup:
For $6 shipped I couldn't be happier.
Unless I find something hugely better or the otterbox commuter drops in price by $20, I'm sticking with this.

I've got the same case, modded it to use with my flip cover and it works great. With the flip cover on I can fold it back and prop the stand on it or it lays flat in front like a keyboard on a laptop. The only problem I have with it is the kickstand is a bit flimsy.

I think I might give this one a go - can't say no to extra protection!

I put the flip cover on, then put the case on and marked it just 1mm-2mm from the top and bottom of the flip cover then removed the case and cut it down to the little groove along the back edge, then cut along the groove. Afterwards I sanded the back edge with 200-1800 grit sand paper and it looks factory finished now.

I don't quite read you... Pics?
Monty, i found one exact replica of the Otterbox Commuter for $5 and mod it to have a thin kickstand.

I spliced in the kickstand from a $9 TPU casing. The point is it's more protected from drops & has a functional stand without the $70 cost from where I come from.

Anyone with the white case notice a halo when taking flash pictures?

I just received my uag scout case and then I see this thread. Blast. The uag case is nice. Fit is not a hundred percent but protection feels good. What it is, is not worth 39 that I paid for it. This case looks like it would offer similar level of protection to the uag case. Anybody compared the two? Might get it to cutout the back to allow for better charging wen I finally get around to performing the induction charging mod.

The only thing to be careful with on this case is the inside edges are pretty sharp, at least on mine, and scuff up the edges of the phone. The reason I don't use it on my new note.

Sorry, but in terms of quality these are in a different category. Two months ago I said to myself after getting a handful of ebay cases - hey they all cost as much as one of the premium one. Then, I compared it to those from UAG, Case-Mate, and Otterbox - and the quality and fitment of ebay cases was pale in comparison. They will offer a similar level of protection, I will not deny that. But you will see how brittle plastic material is, how hard to push volume/power buttons, how flimsy and stretchy silicone inserts, how poorly inner/outer shells interconnect, how flimsy kickstand is, the silicone/plastic gets a blue shade from your jeans pocket, and how poor some of the port openings are. Regarding price of UAG - that's expected when a brand new product is released and there is such a high demand for it, thanks to a great reputation of their S3 cases.
Here's pics of it on the phone itself
