Ok, looks like Nexus 7 forum doesn't have one of these yet
Let's go, guys. What's your preference? This is NOT just what you're currently using, but what you're planning/prefer to use. So if you prefer cover but it's still pre-order, delivery, or whatever, then vote cover.
Cover in a whole body protector AND a case LOL
Just a folio case that's smart cover like. No need for a screen protector though.

I'm going naked With my SGT7, it was hard to fit in my pocket with a case, and I imagine the same will happen with my N7
Prefer naked (+screen protector). Thankfully I haven't had any scratches yet on mine. The rubberized back should offer enough protection for laying it down on any hard surfaces.
Its naked at the moment and i like it like that.
I WOULD like a case but they're all utter rubbish at the moment. I dont see why we can't get good cases like the dreaded iPad, we have to deal with cases that add inches and make it look like one ugly device.
Im waiting for hopefully some sort of slim front cover but that isn't going to happen. So perhaps a nice pouch.

Naked for me. I think the size and backing make it comfortable to use as is, and I am not willing to mess with that. If I drop it, it's inexpensive enough to replace. It's not like my Prime where it would really hurt my pocket if I broke it.
Will eventually be using a keyboard setup that offers some protection.
I'd rather have a cover, but until the official covers come out mines naked, I wanted to like the folio cases but there's just too bulky and spoil size of the N7.
I would def PREFER nekkid, but I know I am a clutz lol.
naked and no screen protector either, i like to feel it when using it. But, i put it in a case with zipper when not in use.
I have a TPU case on mine. It doesn't add too much thickness and the little lip around the front edge feels good to the touch. It seems to also lip over on the screen which perhaps might ease any screen lifting (I don't have any but it may be something that just happens overtime).
Overall I really like it. I am looking for a thin smart cover with a flap, something similar to the TPU but with a flap that not only is a smart cover, but also has some type of magnetic closure to keep it closed. The Poetic Smart Covers looks great but I'm not willing to throw away $20 when they aren't even out yet.
I don't have a Screen protector ATM. I did have a Wet Apply which was great but my last tablet had a oleophobic fingerprint resistant one and it was amazing.
Mine is currently naked. I havent gotten around to getting a screen protector yet for it (I may also get a skin to go onto the back of the device). Although if I plan on traveling with it, I will probably get a sleeve/pocket of some sort to keep it protected. I hate cases if all kinds on tablets/phones.
Naked all the way, baby! Using sleeve for transportation, though; can't chance sand getting in the bag.

Naked for now
Covers increase the thickness of the tablet and make it ugly.
The back of nexus 7 is nice and does not stain or scratch easily, I think it's best to wait for a copy of the ipad smartcover concept (practical and aesthetic).
Naked but I'm waiting for the famous Blurex ultra slim. I'm really missing a stand...

hey all, i was set on ordering the commuter but started reading into the defenders but ive heard the screen protector can be a pain and that would annoy me
what are your thoughts on both
Hated the defenders inbuilt screen protector, scratched real easy and got stuff caught under it. The commuter has pretty good protection and comes with a free stick on screen protector?
Sent from my GT-N7105T using Tapatalk 2
I toyed with both, both screen protectors are pretty bad. I forgot the brand, but there is a real good one people seem to use and get off amazon.
That being said, the cases themselves are both good. All depends on how protective you want to be over the phone.
I think the commuter unless you really need the protection the defender offers.
i currently have a spigen oleophobic screen protector on it so not too fussed about the one with the commuter, will keep it as a spare for emergencies, i have read that its a bit loose around the volume buttons as it doesnt have the outer shell to keep it in place (commuter)
It's a tiny bit loose around that volume area. I have a commuter and don't regret it at all, hurry up and order it so it gets to you quicker.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
I was on the same boat with you. Usually I go for the top spec case but this time I ordered the commuter. I did this for 3 main reasons. The defender looks like great protection but it makes the phone much bigger especially thickness wise. Also it hides almost everything except for the screen so all the beauty of the phone disappears behind plastic. And last and more important the screen protector looks terrible and with all these wholes it lets everything under it and in touch with the screen. You can always remove it and replace it with another protector but then there maybe parts of the upper shell touching the screen which I dont like.
I have the defender... im not using it right now but bought it for when I am back out on site in the dust/rain/dirty hands and big risk of dropping it or someone else knocking it onto the floor. I had it on the phone for a while but its too big for daily use if you dont need the protection.
The inbuilt screen protector is easily removed and to me makes it a whole let better.

Once you remove the screen protector how is the inside of the upper shell? Is it smooth or can it scratch the phone?
ive ordered it, cant for it to arrive, i went for the commuter
Just got my Defender in tonight. I like it so far. I bought it after seeing my aunt's. Not a huge fan of the built in screen protector. Might pop that off later.
the only bit i dont like about the commuter is where it hasnt got the outer case, i think the outer case cover it all like the defender does but ill see when i get it, if you take the protector out does bits of dust/crap get inside the case? just something i was reading
Both... I have both... normally use the Commuter cause it is slimmer, but like the Defender alot too cause it has morr grip.

While I love the protection the Defender provides, after using it for about 3 hours it's a tad too bulky. The Commuter might have been a better choice, but it wasn't Prime Eligible.

Wow what a deal on the Glacier, which they made Knight color for the Commuter :crying:
both have its pros and cons. tested both and opted for the commuter due to its slimmer profile. just a heads up that there are numerous reports about the silicon sagging along the volume and power buttons on the commuter.

Thanks for the info. I din't know Otterbox had these for the Note 2. I used to have the iPhone 4S Defender case. It offered a good drip, nice protection, but the external soft material started to bend and lose its original shape after a couple of months using it. Does this have the same problem?
Looking for opinions on most protective case. Defender seems like the best but the screen protector....and hearing about dust getting in between it and the screen is a little disconcerning. I used a seidio active case on my thunderbolt and loved it, dropped on concrete several times and faired very well. But after recently breaking few months ago and seidio not wanting to replace it like they used to...kind of left a bad taste in my mouth and I dont know if I want to go back to them. That's what she said. Please let me know your opinion. Thanks!

Although I don't have the note2. I have an s3 and I have the otter box defender. I couldn't get the oil slick look to go away so I just took the built in screen protector out. It just pops right out. I have my full screen protector on there anyway to its still fully protected.

Ya that's what im thinking. Just thinking... should I buy it then immediately break the case by ripping out the built in protector. It just feels weird to break something so expensive on purpose lol. Then, does the adhesive that was holding it on cause an issue or removing the protector cause the case rigidinity to be compromised?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
If you can wait 3-4 weeks the uag http://www.urbanarmorgear.com/products/black-note-ii-case
But if you need it now then go for the otter defender or commuter.
Also, if removing screen protector from defender is there still benefit(s) to using that case versus an otterbox commuter? Being that there is an included screen protector versus built in already.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
Rigidity shouldn't be compromised, and from what I read people use hair dryer to heat up the edge of the screen for a glue to soften, thus doing a clean removal of the screen. Glue supposed to roll off easily when its hot.. But you have to keep in mind, Otterbox gives you 1yr warranty if something happens to the case. If something breaks or gets damaged and you need to replace it, they will ask your original case back (I called them up to verify it) and even if you going to glue the screen back - there is a chance they will see it and might use it against you. I personally didn't want to take my chance, so I'm returning my Defender back.
Ya I was worried about breaking/enhancing this case for this reason. What did you end up going with?

I have two cases for my Note 2: a Seidio Active case, and, as of this morning, an Otterbox Defender. Both have their pros and cons. The Seidio is more comfortable in the hand, and quite a bit slimmer, but the soft rubber inner case peels away from the phone too easily and all sorts of nasty scratchy stuff can get underneath it. It also has a handy little kickstand. The Defender is bloody huge, and for me at least, not as comfortable to hold. But it really does feel bombproof. The inbuilt screen protector isn't wonderful, but it works ok. Just needs an oleophobic coating.
As for which is best, I guess it depends how much you think you're going to throw your phone around

Throw? Never, unless onto the bed across the room. Its more of, late night out drinking and drop it from like 5 feet high on to concrete... that kind of scenario. Siedio for tbolt held up well for that did break the case eventually but phone still doesnt have a scratch. But yes, thank you for mentioning comfort, because if it never slips out of your hand... you never drop it. Looking for something grippy if possible, but that is second on my list to overall protection of course.

They are both grippy. The Defender is just a bit too big to hold comfortably. I guess that's the joy of better protection. Ironically, the Defender is possibly more likely to be dropped, not because it slips from your hand, but because it's likely to snag when you try to take it out of your pocket.
I'm going to stick to the Defender for now, although I will remove the screen protector. I use Liquid Armour on the screen and this pretty much negates the need for a plastic cover on the screen.

I had a commuter on my iphone, and it was dreadful. It didn't fit well, and really didn't feel like it would provide any degree of protection at all. And protection was rather important with all that glass! Binned it after a few days and ended up with a Taktik case (kickstarter thing). But I digress.
Apart from my iphone experience, I would say the Seidio case is better than the Commuter. It will give as much protection, and look and fit better.

Do I really need a case ?
What quality are materials used for back camera glass (will it scratch), back and silver borders?
Will the phone scratch in above places, by jsut keeping it in clean pocket or on table ?
I am considering case-mate tough case (prolly only good case available in Poland)
Its not as durable as an iphone I would say. If it had real metal for the bezel you could go by without a case. The metallic bezel scratches easily on this one.

And how about the camera glass? Does it scratch easily?
For me the biggest benefit of a case is more traction in my hand. This freaking thing is slippery without a case!

I've never read a post regarding a scratched camera glass, however the screen will most certainly scratch and it WILL shatter on impact, that much is clear from these forums.

I would have to politely disagree. The iPhone has a poor design in terms of durability. The screen (glass) goes all the way to the edge of the phone, meaning its corner is exposed. This is a bad thing because no matter how durable glass is, a simple hit in its corner will surely crack it.
For example You can take a hammer to a shower door and give it a slight smack on its surface without breaking. However, give it a slight wack on its corner and the WHOLE thing will shatter. This explains how glass as durable as gorilla glass is capable of cracking.

Completely disagree. As another poster said, iphones shatter way more thanks to the edges of the glass being highly exposed to impacts.
But as to the OP's questions, why would you NOT protect such an expensive investment?

Do you like playing Russian roulette? Unless you have insurance plan with your carrier or somewhere else ($10 a month or something like SqTd for $100, and deductible which could end up being anywhere $100-$200), I would invest in a decent $20-$40 case.
Plenty of posts in this and other forums about people shattering the glass when dropped even with tpu case or other slim plastic cases. Battery door scratch or camera glass scratch will be your least worries when you drop your phone and see a spider web going across your screen from the corner. If you want just additional grip, slim case will do it. But for drop protection you need something beefier with a bumper/lip for protection.

Either of those would be fine. Check out link in my signature for all the cases I have tested/reviewed in this forum. Since it sounds like you don't want too much bulk, for a basic everyday use Tough would be an excellent choice with SURFACE being right behind it. If you are more paranoid and will be using your phone outdoors - UAG is great. If you doing heavy duty construction work outside, CONVERT or Defender will do it. If you want to make bling-bling statement, go with aluminum bumper and fancy carbon fiber battery cover
I'm using two cases now: a UAG for when I'm at work and a Seido Snap case as a general walking around case. Both cases allow me to hide an RFID card in them for work access.
The phone itself is too slippery NOT to be in a case.
I don't know how you guys are saying this phone is very slippery. Its pretty slick with no case. The matte cases make it more smooth and slippery iMO

I strongly recommend you the Samsung Protective Cover +.I think you can find it in online shops from Poland ,or stores like Orange ,Vodafone and so on.I bought it from an online shop from Romania. It's pretty cheap.Fits very well ,had it for 3 months It adds the right amount of bulk. It's like 10,3 mm I think. It has raised borders around the screen ,so if it falls,it won't touch the screen. The back is glossy ,but the sides are offering a great grip
Also doesn't affect S Pen ,NFC ,flash or something else. There are 3 colors available:Black White and Pink.Any of these colors has white borders.Do a google search and you'll see.Ah,forgot to mention:I dropped it one time with the case on,the only thing that happened is that the S Pen went flying.
I use an invisible shield and that's all. Unless you handle your phone without care, then a case isn't really necessary unless alcohol becomes part of the equation. I have dropped my phone with the flip cover on concrete, to see it slide down the road in pieces. It didn't break nor did it have any drop damage, but I feel if I had a case, the force would have been expelled through the screen.
Samsung protcrive cover + interested me. It is nice. Have rubber raised above screen and is cheaper than others.

It was discussed as well before, rubber bumper is good, but the back part will scratch like hell. That was #1 complain about it. Also if you buy it online beware of CH cheap knockoffs.

Which type of case helps you stop accidentally touching the edge on the sides while typing and such? Does it help with gripping the phone also? Cause naked, I can barely grip the phone without everything going haywire. Figured I'd ask if a particular case helps before blindly buying some that may not work.
I had the same issues you're having, went to best buy and dropped $35 on a simple TPU case by tech21 and this is now the best feeling phone I've ever owned. It feels even better with a case than it does naked and I no longer accidentally hit the edge screen with my palm. I told my friend who is thinking of picking this up that he would have to put a case on it if he got it.

I put a super thin clear spigen case on mine. Definitely one of those rare instances where the case actually improves the phone because I was having the same issue with my palm touching the edge and launching stuff. It still happens occasionally, but much rarer now and the case makes the phone easier to hold overall without adding any noticeable bulk or detracting from the look since it's clear.

Do you have a film screen protector on your phone as well? If so, how does the Tech21 case work with it? I was using the Spigen Rugged Armor case with a screen protector and it would push the edges of it up.

Unfortunately it doesn't play well with screen protectors
