Defender or Commuter? - Galaxy Note II Accessories

hey all, i was set on ordering the commuter but started reading into the defenders but ive heard the screen protector can be a pain and that would annoy me
what are your thoughts on both

Hated the defenders inbuilt screen protector, scratched real easy and got stuff caught under it. The commuter has pretty good protection and comes with a free stick on screen protector?
Sent from my GT-N7105T using Tapatalk 2

I toyed with both, both screen protectors are pretty bad. I forgot the brand, but there is a real good one people seem to use and get off amazon.
That being said, the cases themselves are both good. All depends on how protective you want to be over the phone.

I think the commuter unless you really need the protection the defender offers.

i currently have a spigen oleophobic screen protector on it so not too fussed about the one with the commuter, will keep it as a spare for emergencies, i have read that its a bit loose around the volume buttons as it doesnt have the outer shell to keep it in place (commuter)

It's a tiny bit loose around that volume area. I have a commuter and don't regret it at all, hurry up and order it so it gets to you quicker.

I was on the same boat with you. Usually I go for the top spec case but this time I ordered the commuter. I did this for 3 main reasons. The defender looks like great protection but it makes the phone much bigger especially thickness wise. Also it hides almost everything except for the screen so all the beauty of the phone disappears behind plastic. And last and more important the screen protector looks terrible and with all these wholes it lets everything under it and in touch with the screen. You can always remove it and replace it with another protector but then there maybe parts of the upper shell touching the screen which I dont like.

I have the defender... im not using it right now but bought it for when I am back out on site in the dust/rain/dirty hands and big risk of dropping it or someone else knocking it onto the floor. I had it on the phone for a while but its too big for daily use if you dont need the protection.
The inbuilt screen protector is easily removed and to me makes it a whole let better.

Once you remove the screen protector how is the inside of the upper shell? Is it smooth or can it scratch the phone?

ive ordered it, cant for it to arrive, i went for the commuter

Just got my Defender in tonight. I like it so far. I bought it after seeing my aunt's. Not a huge fan of the built in screen protector. Might pop that off later.

the only bit i dont like about the commuter is where it hasnt got the outer case, i think the outer case cover it all like the defender does but ill see when i get it, if you take the protector out does bits of dust/crap get inside the case? just something i was reading

Both... I have both... normally use the Commuter cause it is slimmer, but like the Defender alot too cause it has morr grip.

While I love the protection the Defender provides, after using it for about 3 hours it's a tad too bulky. The Commuter might have been a better choice, but it wasn't Prime Eligible.

Newegg has the white one for less than amazon. And with shoprunner trial you can get two day shipping free.

Glacier: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875983426

Wow what a deal on the Glacier, which they made Knight color for the Commuter :crying:

both have its pros and cons. tested both and opted for the commuter due to its slimmer profile. just a heads up that there are numerous reports about the silicon sagging along the volume and power buttons on the commuter.

$32 a great deal? :-\ I'll wait a bit longer and wait for the price to drop to the levels of the Commuter for the GS3. In the meantime I think the Ballistic case is a much better deal and case for 22 dollars.

It sits slightly away from the screen... So doesn't touch it. No visible damage on my screen from it and ive had it on for a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the info. I din't know Otterbox had these for the Note 2. I used to have the iPhone 4S Defender case. It offered a good drip, nice protection, but the external soft material started to bend and lose its original shape after a couple of months using it. Does this have the same problem?

[Q] Case & screen protector questions

Hey guys,
Anyone found a hard case that fits in the car dock yet? Tried the incipio one but it's pretty tight, and the last thing I wanna do with my shiny new bionic is to go wedging and squeezing it
Also, I've heard that because the screen is gorilla glass there's really no need for a screen protector, anyone wanna weigh in on this? I generally carry the phone in my pocket with nothing else in it, should I be worried about scratches or scuffs through normal use and carrying? In the event of a bad enough drop/scratch that the screen would get damaged, would a screen protector provide any help anyway?
Thanks in advance for any advice, and hope everyone is enjoying their phone as much as I am!

The screen protectors they try to sell you at the VZ stores are *always* useless on *all* phones. And since the Bionic has gorilla glass, even the invisibleSHIELDs and Bodyguardz are useless also. You don't have to worry about scratches and scuffs at all on a device that has gorilla glass.
As for cases, I don't plan on using one at all, so I don't have an opinion on that.
i purchased the Shell Holster combo from Verizon and if you remove the insert in the car dock the phone will fit in it with the hard shell on it.
The hard shell also works with the extended battery.
I'm looking for a case that fits over the extended battery. Didn't like the uncomfortable plastic one verizon offers. Haven't seen any others.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I tried the shell holster combo, didn't seem to fit in the car dock even with the insert removed. It felt like the bulge that allows for the extended battery made the case too wide for the clamp on the car dock to fit over the phone, but I was also being pretty delicate with the thing (like I said, I REALLY don't want to go wedging and squeezing anything on my new baby!), but maybe I missed something? Can you post pics of yours in action?
I'll also say that I thought it was odd that the only clamshell holster that my verizon store had was one that fit the extended battery, it definitely seemed to add a lot of bulk to the phone that you don't need if you're not using it. Is there just the single "one size fits all" version of this case, or are there separate ones for the standard and extended batteries (which seems like it would make a lot more sense)?
Also, thanks for the advice on the gorilla glass, I did get a set of verizon screen protectors (even though I know they're worthless) just as a temporary measure until I could get a better one, but I guess I'll be tearing that thing off and seeing how it goes. Anyone else wanna add their weight to this recommendation and make me feel a little better about going au-natural on the screen? I'm coming from a Dinc which definitely needed the screen protector, so I may just be a little paranoid, but it would totally ruin my day if I went without and then ended up with a permanently scuffed screen
Thanks again for all the advice guys, I'm totally loving this thing, just gets better and better every day I use it!
I didn't use anything on my screen (or a case for that matter) on my DX for the year I had it and the screen still looks brand new. I usually carried the phone in my pocket with nothing else in the pocket. Also dropped the phone a few times and no damage whatsoever.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I had Gorilla Glass on another phone and used it for over a year with ZERO scratches. I do not plan on using a screen protector with my Bionic. However, I am shopping for a thin case to stop surface scratches.
I had two OG droids over a period of two years that never had a screen protector.
One did get a very minor scratch but the other I had for longer was flawless the entire time.
I think the only thing you have to watch out for if you're going bare is sand.
So what are you guys recommending for cases? I like the Incipios, but if the holster works in the car dock, that'd be a big selling point.

Looking for a case to fit over the extended battery as well. Hoping that there will be some soon!
You do NOT need a screen protector... rocked the D1 for ~2yr without one and not a single blemish became of it.. it has the same gorilla glass screen:
Youtube:Motorola Droid A855 Key Screen Scratch Test
As for cases... I got the 'high-gloss silicone' case from VZW... I like it, EXCEPT that the power button doesn't work in the car-dock. I was thinking of returning it, but I might just go exacto on it and make a little cut-out for the power button.
I don't know if this is very relevant but tomorrow i'm picking up the otterbox defender bionic case from radioshack (got a buddy whose a rep that can get me a discount). I've seen the otterbox cases on other phones and they're awesome. They do add a lot of bulk but if you're often at risk of destroying your phone if you drop it like I am, (I work at citizens bank park in philly) the bulk is well worth the protection.
Wow, some of you guys are very lucky. Gorilla Glass, without a doubt, CAN SCRATCH. It handles things like coins and keys fine, but things that are harder, like sand, will scratch it. It amazes me that some people still say its unscratchable. Do yourself a favor and get a good quality screen protector, not that Zagg garbage. I recommended Steinheil Ultra Crystal. Once its on, you'll never notice it. Just like glass.
So, just in case anyone was wondering, I did end up finding a hard case that fits in the docks/mounts easily and allows charging and dock mode. The Incipio Feather is what I got, and I'm really liking it. It barely adds any bulk to the phone, but it gives it enough protection to ward off pocket scratches or dings and would probably do fine in a small drop. It does come with a screen protector but I wouldn't recommend using it, it's one of the harder plastic ones that picks up fingerprints like crazy, and while it's big enough to fit the entire screen it doesn't bend to conform to the screen's curves so it overhangs and lifts up around the edges which sucks. I'll probably end up getting a Zagg or a Steinheil instead, but as for the case I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a hard case but not much bulk!

Interesting. Did you contact them? I haven't had this problem on my phone or tablet.
I've heard that the OEM case verizon sells fits in all the docks. I believe there's some sort of insert that you can pull out to adapt for the case. Thoughts...?

Yes, the oem SILICONE cases fit in the docks, but if you're like me and want a hard case you'e SOL. There are only three hard cases that verizon sells for the Bionic, the Incipio two-piece case, the Otterbox, and the shell holster combo, and none of them seem to fit the docks and allow charging/dock mode (not to mention that the otterbox and shell/holster are both huge). You're right about the insert, but it still doesn't help with any of the hard cases that were released at verizon, which is why I'm so stoked to find the one I did!

Hey I'm considering this Feather or the Seidio Surface case (which I had with my Incredible). From the pics on the Incipio website for the Feather case, it looks like the top corners are exposed...is that true? Its a little hard to tell from the website pics. Would you mind taking a couple of pics of the corners with the case on and posting here?
Thanks!!

Best rugged case for note 2

Looking for opinions on most protective case. Defender seems like the best but the screen protector....and hearing about dust getting in between it and the screen is a little disconcerning. I used a seidio active case on my thunderbolt and loved it, dropped on concrete several times and faired very well. But after recently breaking few months ago and seidio not wanting to replace it like they used to...kind of left a bad taste in my mouth and I dont know if I want to go back to them. That's what she said. Please let me know your opinion. Thanks!

Although I don't have the note2. I have an s3 and I have the otter box defender. I couldn't get the oil slick look to go away so I just took the built in screen protector out. It just pops right out. I have my full screen protector on there anyway to its still fully protected.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Ya that's what im thinking. Just thinking... should I buy it then immediately break the case by ripping out the built in protector. It just feels weird to break something so expensive on purpose lol. Then, does the adhesive that was holding it on cause an issue or removing the protector cause the case rigidinity to be compromised?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
If you can wait 3-4 weeks the uag http://www.urbanarmorgear.com/products/black-note-ii-case
But if you need it now then go for the otter defender or commuter.
Also, if removing screen protector from defender is there still benefit(s) to using that case versus an otterbox commuter? Being that there is an included screen protector versus built in already.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
Rigidity shouldn't be compromised, and from what I read people use hair dryer to heat up the edge of the screen for a glue to soften, thus doing a clean removal of the screen. Glue supposed to roll off easily when its hot.. But you have to keep in mind, Otterbox gives you 1yr warranty if something happens to the case. If something breaks or gets damaged and you need to replace it, they will ask your original case back (I called them up to verify it) and even if you going to glue the screen back - there is a chance they will see it and might use it against you. I personally didn't want to take my chance, so I'm returning my Defender back.
Ya I was worried about breaking/enhancing this case for this reason. What did you end up going with?

I have two cases for my Note 2: a Seidio Active case, and, as of this morning, an Otterbox Defender. Both have their pros and cons. The Seidio is more comfortable in the hand, and quite a bit slimmer, but the soft rubber inner case peels away from the phone too easily and all sorts of nasty scratchy stuff can get underneath it. It also has a handy little kickstand. The Defender is bloody huge, and for me at least, not as comfortable to hold. But it really does feel bombproof. The inbuilt screen protector isn't wonderful, but it works ok. Just needs an oleophobic coating.
As for which is best, I guess it depends how much you think you're going to throw your phone around

Throw? Never, unless onto the bed across the room. Its more of, late night out drinking and drop it from like 5 feet high on to concrete... that kind of scenario. Siedio for tbolt held up well for that did break the case eventually but phone still doesnt have a scratch. But yes, thank you for mentioning comfort, because if it never slips out of your hand... you never drop it. Looking for something grippy if possible, but that is second on my list to overall protection of course.

They are both grippy. The Defender is just a bit too big to hold comfortably. I guess that's the joy of better protection. Ironically, the Defender is possibly more likely to be dropped, not because it slips from your hand, but because it's likely to snag when you try to take it out of your pocket.
I'm going to stick to the Defender for now, although I will remove the screen protector. I use Liquid Armour on the screen and this pretty much negates the need for a plastic cover on the screen.

I had a commuter on my iphone, and it was dreadful. It didn't fit well, and really didn't feel like it would provide any degree of protection at all. And protection was rather important with all that glass! Binned it after a few days and ended up with a Taktik case (kickstarter thing). But I digress.
Apart from my iphone experience, I would say the Seidio case is better than the Commuter. It will give as much protection, and look and fit better.

Otterbox defender is the best with iq shield screen protector
Seems like the answer is the defender but it has couple flaws. Rip out that screen protector, trim that power button, and it gets loose. Idk its alot of modifying for an expensive case. Now if we could just find one without these flaws. Seidio rings a bell but the magnet on the kick stand seems to interfere with the spen from what I gather. And if it breaks from a drop your sol. Thats what they told me. Thumbs down

I cant understand how people compare Aegis and UAG to Defender? They are in a totally different class. Also I cant understand how people vote for UAG a case that isn't available yet? Dont get me wrong. It looks great and most probably I will order one but it shouldn't be in this poll yet. Adding for example the ballistic would make more sense.
depends on the type of drop you plan on doing.
i had a ballistic hardcore case for my atrix 4g. i accidentally dropped it off a second story balcony without the extra silicone layer. survived with nothing cracked. but i would put that down to luck mostly.
if its only a drop from your hip, any cheapo tpu case will do. if its a drop from head height, then i'd go for the big brands.
i would avoid metal bumper cases though. whilst the rigidity of metal cases means they distribute the force fairly evenly around the case, the weakness is that metals also amplify vibrations which can increase the risk of damaging the internals.
i am confused
what is wrong with power button and screen protector in Otterbox Defender ?

Power button seems to stick because of the amount of material on it reported by some users. And the screen protector...this is what is making me go towards the commuter instead. The screen protector is not close enough to the real screen and there is a gap causing issues when touching the screen especially with pinch to zoom and for the spen. Also the screen protector has a cut out for the home button, which is ok but because of that gap I was talking about the cut out hole turns into a vacuum for dust when you press on the screen it suckings in junk. Not a big deal you would think, but that dust rubbing on the screen can possibly be abrasive and cause scratching over time also annoying. The big issue is usability with the screen protector and it seems like ot causes an issue. Fortunately if you really want the defender and you find the screen protector bothers you, you can push it out as it is held on by glue and can be pretty easily removed. A lot of people seem to do that.

Absolutely, apples and oranges. Not to mention that one of the "oranges" is not released yet. I mean, you can compare those cases for S3 line, but still it would be fare to wait until N2 version is released.
so , i decided to order Otterbox Defender and remove the screen
and use my own anti shock screen protractor
do you think it's wise move or i should wait for Urban Armor UAG or more votes ??
I think its wise. ull get more protection from the defender or commuter but more style with the uag.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
IMHO, wait until UAG is released and available on Amazon (assuming you are in US). Get Defender, Commuter, UAG, Ballistic, etc. at the same time. Play around with it, compare, feel it through, and then make a decision. Since UAG is not available yet, it might take a little bit longer for it to be available on Amazon after release on the their website (usually it goes discounted on Amazon). Again, this is just my humble opinion. Read and educate yourself on-line because you will learn details you wouldn't even pick up by looking at it yourself. Once you read plenty of reviews and watch enough YT videos, get your own hands'on experience and make sure you can return it back if not satisfied. Also, keep in mind, do you really need super-duper protection? Or just need an adequate protection? If you work on a factory floor or a contractor working on the roof, it's not even a choice and Defender is the only way to go. But if you are carrying it in the pocket, and/or want to take it with you when you go out - perhaps a thinner more stylish case is the way to go. Some people have insurance (from Best Buy or Square Trade or from service provider), and these people tend to go ultra slim with extra piece of mind knowing they won't have to pay $700 to replace it. By the same token, if you are paying $10 a month insurance and have $100-$200 deductible - perhaps investing in $50 case instead would be a smarter way to go. You got a lot of options. At the end of the day, make a choice based on your own judgment!!!
I would throw the casemate tough case in this mix. Just got one today and its awesome. I have a ballistic and an aegis and the tough case is whats staying on my phone. Will have pics and review for it tonight hopefully in the other thread I created.

The Otterbox Defender is definitely more rugged and tougher than the Casemate Tough. I wouldn't remove the screen protector on the Otterbox Defender, although the pressure sensitivity of the S-pen is highly questionable.

The defender is more rugged than most everything, if you dont mind a lunchbox around your phone. I was comparing it to the other cases mentioned. Since it had been said that they are in dif class of cases

If I had to choose between those two I would choose the Spigen, but i personally use a cheap $3 tpu from amazon and it works great from impacts and is minimal....cruzerlite makes nice ones too....hope this helps
Definitely stay away from the otter box case. The space between the screen and the protector drove me insane - I could feel it and hear it every time I touched the screen. Took it back and went with a cheap but protective tpu case
The ballistic looks to be better for drops, but I say a tpu with a decent lip is good enough for regular drops as seen here. A diztronic case is what I'd go for. Putting on a screen protector might help a little if there's rocks where it lands..
Get a Ballistic Aspira. It's thin everywhere but the corners, and they protect it pretty well.

I have the Spigen slim armor..And I won't leave home without it protecting my G2 ?

Slim armor has solid feel and could take a pretty good drop, not much lip to protect glass screen though, i had the ballistic case on my nexus 4, very bulky but very protective, major lips for extra protection as well, only issue i had was sometimes accessing my notification bar and PIE controls due to the lip being in the way... very nice case though

Are there any cases that will protect the screen from drops?

I just picked up a regular S7 and I'm finding the screen a little small (coming from a G3).
I'd like to try the Edge but I'm very worried about breaking the screen. I drop my phone a lot (I run heavy equipment in rough environments). I have an OB Defender on my S7 now.
Are there any case options for the S7E that will really hold up to frequent abuse?
I only have a day to exchange phones so I'd really appreciate any insight.
Thanks,
TF

If you dont mind the bulky-eness the UAG is the way to go! Great protection and add a glass protection, since you are on rough environment.
Beware that no case will protect you if you drop it from a decent height , face down on a rock for example.
Here i have my top 5 cases for the S7

Sure. There are some ridiculous contraptions out there that wrap the phone all way round with glass, metal, plastic and whatever else they could find. Probably keeps it 'safe' if you don't mind it looking like the original Motorola brick phone .

Aesthetics is the absolute last thing I'm worried about...
I just require a large screen phone with the best specs and longest battery life possible.
I don't require it to be pretty.

From what I've read there's not a single glass screen protector made for the S7E that actually works properly. Does your experience suggest otherwise?

In my experience, nothing is 100% drop proof..
I had my iPhone 6s which i use as a second work phone, drop from 20 cm @ the swimming pool shattered at 2 corners wearing a glass shield. Had it fallen many many times from ear height, and nothing happened..
**** happens.
Yeah on the Edge phones, solutions on glass protections are limited. I ve tried a no-name glass, which left the sides uncovered, and where the glass curves left a small but noticable gap. Threw it @ 1 day .
I ll be ordering a Skinomi shield skin which in my past experience with the Note Edge worked really really well and curved nice without being noticed. Now i ran an IQ shield which i ll be replacing cause the case lifts the edges after 1 week of use.
Otterbox and I hate otterbox. I have dropped this phone s7 edge 4 times and every time it's been perfect.

Otterbox Defender. As frustrating as the screen protector is, you just have to try to get used to it
VZ S7 EDGE ONYX
I'd recommend the Otterbox Commuter Series. I've had it on my S7 edge from day one and its taken a fair few drops from 5ft onto hardwood/concrete/tiles. Phone is perfect, case is a lil roughed up but you gotta look closely to notice it.
The screen is raised above the floor by rubber 'lips'. Headphone and Charging ports are covered by flaps.
The Commuter does not have the bulk of the Otterbox Defender. Commuter offers great protection IMO.

Thanks.
I ended up getting both the Defender and the Commuter.
I think the Defender will stay on most of the time, unless crap gets in between the screen protector and the phone like the defenders did on my other phones... it does seem to have a tight fit, though.... we'll see.
I liked the Commuter but I couldn't find a screen protector that worked well with it.

Ghost armors screen protectors on my edge working great with the Spigen 2-layer w/ kickstand.. it is wet application though, best get it applied at a cart in the mall

Otterbox Strada is nice enough to be my daily phone protector - feels tough for the job without extra bulkiness of Defender.

agree with this one. plus this case holds down the edges of screen protectors and works with wireless charging.
Check the ballistic urbanite cases. Really slim with 6 feet drop certification.I'm really happy with it

If that's the requirement and you don't depend on any of the Samsung specific features, get a Pixel XL with the fattest toughest case you can find. It is the pinnacle of large screen meets best performance meets long battery life.
Buy this case. I took the built in screen protector out and use a Zagg invisible screen HD because it's softer and would absorb more if hit. This case has the most raised edges out of all the cases I've seen. It's duel layered and I've dropped my phone about 20 times and some on concrete and no damage.
