Ghetto shoulder buttons - Nexus 7 General

I have a psp and thinking of ditching it and replace it with nexus 7 since i am only playing it for ps1 games and there is ps1 emulator for android. The onscreen control is good enough for rpgs which im more interested in but it is missing the shoulder buttons that im used to. So yesterday i thought of something and came out with ghetto shoulder buttons, this is how it looks like connected to R1 button of epsxe (ps1 emulator).

built from aluminium foil, thin wire, and tape. The foil on the corner is exposed and functions as the shoulder button. Aside from it looks, it works really well. I tried creating it using tape and aluminium foil only but it would not work, the button will register as being pressed although im not touching the screen or the foil in the corner. Using wire like in the picture solves this problem.
So this is one way to get a shoulder button for emulators, it is not pretty but it is pretty cheap If anyone has better idea or has seen a product that does the same thing please share

i like them, A* for creativity!

Looks really ghetto that's for sure but I'm thinking if you use black electrical tape it would look way better. I have used electrical tape to block out the blinding capacitive lights on my epic and it worked fine. Maybe cutout a circle on both ends would look good too.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

Using a black tape would make it more eye pleasing but i think electrical tape is too sticky. Im using cheap tape so that i can remove it easily and it does not left any sticky traces. The circle cutout is a good idea, i will be doing that when my current one will not stick anymore. I have been removing and sticking back my current ghetto shoulder buttons a few times and it is still sticking well.

Quality idea !
Well done !

Just got me one of this, Digitus Gamekeys
I did a short test to see whats its capable of. I have only used the d-pad and the four-set button. The d-pad sticks well enough without pressing it too much on the screen in fact it will stick by simply dropping it to the screen but the buttons need a bit more work to make it stick good enough to game. Although d-pad sticks really easy but it is a pain to make it working properly. In epsxe with normal size on-screen d-pad, it can go up, down, left, right but it is hard to do diagonal directions. After adjusting the size of the on-screen d-pad a few times, i found that to get best maneuverability is to make the on-screen d-pad really small, smaller than the rubber d-pad sticking on it which makes it hard to really put the rubber d-pad dead center on the on-screen d-pad.
According to the box the buttons have 'original psp soft touch'. I tested this claim and while it is soft and easy to press down but it is also easy to push it in other directions other than down which sometimes makes the buttons unstick from the screen. With the four-set buttons one unsticked button will not cause them to fall so it is easy to fix just stick the button back. For button mashing games, although i havent tested yet but i dont think this will work very well, you will want a real controller. With slower pace games like platformers they are really playable. I tried megaman 7 with gnes and im quite satisfied with the control and response.
In conclusion, to me the digitus gamekey works really well with emulators and works much better than on-screen control with the feel of buttons and button feedback but not on par with a real controller. It costed me 7 euros.
Ok.. thats the end of that, lets get back to topic. I am thinking of creating shoulder button using the 7 buttons left. one button sticks to the screen connected to a button sticked on the corner of the nexus in (hopefully) less ghetto-ey fashion as the one i have now. One of the current ghetto shoulder button is already broken. I forgot the wire i used (awg 32) doesnt like to get bent and twisted very much and part of the wire on the corner got broken. The next build i would like it to be durable and portable so no tape, you can store in your pouch without getting it sticking in. I got some idea but if you got any idea or already have a custom shoulder buttons on your nexus 7 please share

Home Made capacitive screen stylus

I was really struggling to spend around 15 euros on HTC stylus, so I tried and made my own. All you need is a long stylus - shaped piece of plastic, I used a long lego piece. Next thing you need is a piece of antistatic film you from your eg computer equipment ( around 7 by 7 centimeters) and some scotch tape. Next thing you need is around five minutes free time and you got a stylus.
1. Wrap antistatic film around eg. lego piece and stick it with scotch tape.
2. Optional - you can cut the end of film to give it some more regular shape and to get some more accuracy. It's done
It's crucial to remember to be touching the antistatic film itself while using stylu, otherwise it won't work.

Good idea, but a photo would be nice.
i've tried a stylus and was less than impressed, but if it works for you that great
I used a old bic pen, wrapped aluminum foil around it, added #0000 steel wool to the tip, put on some tape, etc until it felt "right" and then it worked. You have to be touching the foil though.
I will try to upload photos so that can be visible in my post, but dunno how yet .
Stylus works great and is very accurate, but the fact is you have to touch the film while using it. But it's not a very big drawback I guess
Done with a bit more care that would look very acceptable - ghetto is fine for me, but if I left that on my desk the wife would "tidy it up" direct to the bin lol
I'm still trying to understand how capacitive screens works, but could you possibly make a stylus out of solid metal?
In which case, I have an idea for a design
some antistatic film, 1"x1" is enough
a little bit of sponge
a copper tube about 4" long and with an internal diameter slightly bigger than the following bolt
a bolt slightly longer than the tube
a nut for the bolt
tape
place the spongy material on the head of the bolt and drape the antistatic fil over top it.
tape it down to the sides of the bolt
insert the bolt inside the tube and use the nut to hold everything together. use lock-tight if needed, as you do not wish to damage the film.
optionally you could rig some sort of clip and put that on before the nut.
you can tweak the design as desired.
Capacitive screen works basically by detecting electrostatic load that human body produces.
I think only rule in making non-battery stylus for that kind of screen is to provide a load-conductive material and adjust it to connect directly the finger and the surface of the screen.
So basing on that konwledge I don't think that a solid metal stylus would work due to the lack of connection of antistatic film and a source of a static load. You can check it by just touching the screen with any bolt, or anything metalish at all.
I made my own in the beginning
Like many of us, I too tried making my own stylus to use on my iPod, but they always looked like junk and never worked much better. So like everyone else looking for the best, I bought and tried 90% of them and spent a ton of money dong so. Then I tried the STYLUS-R-US ones and wow! They make all other ones look pathetic, seriously. I bought their Terminator and it is awesome to the bone. No pressure a all to make it work. Not foam either. I'm not sure of their url but they have like a dozen so you can just search for stylusrusDOT anything and you'll find them.

[Q] Can you still use Swype on note?

Hello,
Was looking to see if Galaxy Note is for me by going into mall today and trying one of those things out. I absolutely swear by Swype and would not buy a phone unless I can use swype. I was unable to swype with my thumb from left side to right side while holding phone in that hand. Are my hands too small or it's just plain impossible?
No troubles for me.
Also, there is the stylus

You can hold phone in your right hand ans swype with your thumb on right hand from left edge all they way to the right edge of the phone?
on the note with an up to date rom you can set a 'one hand usage' option to make the standard keyboard and phonepad smaller and shiftable from left to right. but swype seems not to care about that option. i tried my self to one hand use swype, it works but 'nice to use' is a different story. so i think this is a showstopper for you. anyhow using the keyboard with one hand and holding the device with the other hand is still my favorite.

Don't know about your hand size, but I am an average height UK male and have no trouble swyping one handed on the Note. In fact for me, the swyping is vastly improved with this screen size. I'm amazed how much I love this machine when I thought it would be far too big to be comfortable. Swype works great.

i can reach the edge with one hand
I use TouchPal which is a Swype clone with multiple languages including Chinese. No problem too reach all three bottom part of the screen with one hand, but I have a flip cover that may help. Reaching for top bar buttons is not so easy so I would complain more about the stock browser's bookmark and tabs buttons.
Anyway be careful, once you get used to big phones you can't go back to the dwarves.
Earlier firmwares I was having issues where even though I didn't let go of the screen swype thought I had with one handed swyping. I have no
Then the latest GB roms this issue has gone away and I could swype one handed with no issues at all.
Unfortunately im on the Chinese leak ICS and don't have swype atm and am missing it.

How do you guys hold a phone that you can reach both sides of the screen. Is your middle finger and palm holds phones from both sides or phone just rests on your palm and you swype from left to right with thumb?
I hold it almost like this. The fingers are more at the center back, and with the pinky at the bottom for stability. I can reach all corners holding it this way. And yes, i got above avarage sized hands. (not my pic)

And with this hold you reach with a thumb from bottom left to bottom right?

Yup! And if i hold it slightly different with the three other fingers more at the center of the back i reach all four corners.
I can barely use swype but image to.
If i had longer fingers it would be perfect.

Swype Beta
Hi all,
I have installed the Swype Beta by removing the built in one by Samsung as it works so much better however if I press the little icon to make the keyboard smaller as shown on the image, it stops working and I have to re-install.
Does anyone know how to fix?, I think it is a resolution issue.
I have also included the link where I found out how to remove the stock one with the beta. Make sure you delete the files recommended on the link as if you just remove it with Titanium, it may stop working after a re-start, at least it did for me.

Ordered one as well. The HP Touchpad keyboard is pretty functional, but the built in touchpad and android specific keys on the Motorola forced me to purchase.
Got mine delivered today, I like it a lot. Not as flimsy as I feared. Though it feels "cheap" compared to the Touchpad keyboard. The keys are some kind of plastic that just feels really cheap to me. Trackpad is nice, would have been awesome if it supported multitouch, but I'll take what I can get for the price. Android specific keys are a bonus. One disappointment is that the music shortcut keys don't appear to do anything when in some other apps. One the homescreen, it starts up some music. Just some rambling thoughts on the product...
I ordered this as well. How does the track pad respond? Is it in a comfortable position to use? I'm anxiously awaiting mine. I hope I made the right choice and picked this over the HP.

Trackpad isn't bad. I don't know that I'd call it responsive. The pointer moves fairly slowly, not sure if there's a way to adjust the speed or not (should add that it's not like you have a ton of screen real estate to mouse across, so it doesn't really matter). I haven't really had much opportunity yet to mess with it.
One kind of cool thing is that opening the trackpad drawer wakes the screen up. Something does. Sometimes it wakes up when I pick it up, not sure what is triggering it.
My only real gripe so far is just the material the keys are made out of. Though, as long as I'm griping, I prefer matte plastic to glossy as well.
If you go into Language and Input there is an option for pointer speed.
Yeah, found the setting and made some adjustments.
It's pretty responsive, some occasional failures to respond to taps (like I have to tap again to get it to do whatever, it's pretty infrequent though).
The keyboard is nice, love the Android specific keys, kind of ambivalent about the touchpad. It's nice to have (and was a good deal), but not something I'd pay extra for. I think I'd prefer what appears to be the updated version with a pointer nub instead.
edit: Rage at my palms brushing against the touchpad, so annoying.
T'is back for $29:
http://www.woot.com/offers/motorola-bluetooth-keyboard-2
After having used it a little more extensively, I'm kind of thinking the trackpad isn't worth it. The inability to do any multitouch gestures really hold it back. I find that the trackpad doesn't really offer that much to the whole experience. Some little things that hold it back that you either can't do or I don't know how to do.
One example is there doesn't seem to be a way to open the notification drawer. I'll click on the status bar and it'll flash like it wants to open, but nothing happens. Same effect if you were to just tap on it with your finger. There's no click-drag thing like you'd have on a Windows laptop. For $30, the trackpad is a bonus. I wouldn't pay extra for it though.
I hate that us Canucks can never get these damned deals. Grr.......
Agreed. I know now have used mine and needless to say I'm disappointed with the track pad. The keyboard is definitely justifiable for its size, build, and and shortcuts. The track pad though... Is junk. You can pull the notification bar down but to press and hold and drag seems like it would break soon. But whatever needed something because these keyboards and docks for the N7 don't seem to be rushed.

I got my keyboard in yesterday and have been playing with it for a while. As a keyboard it's great, it types fast and accurately and has some nice Android hotkeys. The keys feel plasticky (because they are) but they're kind of a matte finish which is grippy. The trackpad is a nice bonus, nothing amazing but it works in place of a mouse in a pinch. Unfortunately it doesn't support gestures (it says it does, but I guess its only for Motorola devices). It does have a physical click, so you can use that or a double tap and drag around in place of a swipe. Overall I like it, `it feels solid and has a nice weight plus some extra features. For the deal price it's a great keyboard, if I paid the full MSRP it would be lacking.

LOL, there's a physical click somewhere? Can't wait to get home to see how I missed it.
I have yet to get that double tap and drag to work, just wasn't happening for me.
I almost missed it too. Although based on the angle I feel like I'm going to break it while pushing down to click. The click and drag is borderline impossible. I think I'm going to only use it when there's no surface for a mouse around in a real pinch.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
What do you know, it is clicky. To be honest, I find the trackpad to be much more useful now. On a hard surface, it's just resistant enough that you won't accidently trigger it. I find myself able to drag and click fairly easily.
If only gestures worked...

Uncomfortable wriststrap

I can't seem to get my watch to fit just right. It's either too tight or too loose. Trying to come up with a way to alleviate the problem. If there was a hole in the middle of the 2 I've tried, it would be perfect. Thinking if there was some kind of small cushiony sleeve but with the way everything bends I have no idea how I could do it. Wondering if anyone else has this problem and has any suggestions?
My problem was that the metal rubbed against my arm and irritated it. Some moleskin solved that pretty quick.
I've heard some people use wrist bands (like what tennis players wear) to both make the watch stay in one place, feel more comfortable, and to prevent any possible sweat from entering the small hole behind the camera (although whether or not this would actually BE a problem remains to be seen).
You can find wrist bands in a variety of colors and materials, so it might be a possible solution. I've already thought about it myself, should I get a gear (my wrist is a tad on the thin side).

That's kind of what I'm talking about but if there was a way to bring that metal joint closer to the wriststrap and not popping out it wouldn't poke into my wrist. I guess in a pinch I could always try poking out a new notch in between the 2 I've tried. Rather not do that though.
Use it in the tightest hole, it will stretch a bit after a few days, also make sure to fit it at the right height on you arm and rotate around your wrist until you find the perfect spot. This is what I did, no need to wear a silly tennis wrist band lol

Sorry I have it on the second hole from the end and it is perfect, but I guess I have a large wrist.
---------- Post added at 09:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:13 PM ----------
Yes, I have this problem and I don't believe wearing it "tight" is going to stretch anything.
I have a leather punch I've been eyeing with respect to adding a hole...LOL. But I don't have the guts to try it, particularly since the hole is thicker on one side than the other and I'm not sure how to replicate that.
Drives me nuts. If they'd only put a finer adjustment in the metal clasp part like some of my other watches have...the price would have gone up. But it would be more comfortable for us in-between folks.
Maybe (as someone else noted) a moleskin or felt pad along the flat back side of the watch would help?
It does actually stretch a little if you set on the tightest hole your wrist can take, just accommodate it around your wrist so that the metal doesn't hurt your skin. I've noticed it firs tight in the morning and it eases up after a few minutes. If you are planning on punching a hole, just remember that wire runs down the bracelet from the watch to the speaker and camera.

The speaker and camera are on the other half of the strap.
I used a leather punch on mine and it worked great. Although the hole isn't tapered like the original holes it still looks great and fits perfectly now.

you'll find it on Amazon under various brands like Holife/Victsing/PICTEK and even with RGB(I have the old non RGB version).
I'm using it since 2017 for my daily work AND I'm playing a lot, mostly FPS(BF, DayZ, Warzone) and RPG with it.
The fact that you can get it for 14€/14$ is incredibly. Compared to the price you receive
fully customizyble LED or RGB illumination via software, also the rest of the keys
7200DPI sensor which works on every mousepad I've been using over the past 5 years(switching them at least once a year)
On the fly up/down programmable DPI keys next to the mous wheel with optical feedback(in my case)
nice switches with a very good feedback and short way
mouse feet with a superior lifetime, they're like new, no wear
The whole mouse, the mechanic, the cover shows no wear or damage. It has also no ugly rubber on the housing which feels like glue after some time. Sturdy, cheap ABS plastic, nothing else
How are the ergonomics? It looks a bit "flat", does it fill out the curves of your hand @strongst ?
