[Q] Can you still use Swype on note? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Was looking to see if Galaxy Note is for me by going into mall today and trying one of those things out. I absolutely swear by Swype and would not buy a phone unless I can use swype. I was unable to swype with my thumb from left side to right side while holding phone in that hand. Are my hands too small or it's just plain impossible?

No troubles for me.
Also, there is the stylus

You can hold phone in your right hand ans swype with your thumb on right hand from left edge all they way to the right edge of the phone?

on the note with an up to date rom you can set a 'one hand usage' option to make the standard keyboard and phonepad smaller and shiftable from left to right. but swype seems not to care about that option. i tried my self to one hand use swype, it works but 'nice to use' is a different story. so i think this is a showstopper for you. anyhow using the keyboard with one hand and holding the device with the other hand is still my favorite.

Don't know about your hand size, but I am an average height UK male and have no trouble swyping one handed on the Note. In fact for me, the swyping is vastly improved with this screen size. I'm amazed how much I love this machine when I thought it would be far too big to be comfortable. Swype works great.

i can reach the edge with one hand

I use TouchPal which is a Swype clone with multiple languages including Chinese. No problem too reach all three bottom part of the screen with one hand, but I have a flip cover that may help. Reaching for top bar buttons is not so easy so I would complain more about the stock browser's bookmark and tabs buttons.
Anyway be careful, once you get used to big phones you can't go back to the dwarves.

Earlier firmwares I was having issues where even though I didn't let go of the screen swype thought I had with one handed swyping. I have no
Then the latest GB roms this issue has gone away and I could swype one handed with no issues at all.
Unfortunately im on the Chinese leak ICS and don't have swype atm and am missing it.

How do you guys hold a phone that you can reach both sides of the screen. Is your middle finger and palm holds phones from both sides or phone just rests on your palm and you swype from left to right with thumb?

I hold it almost like this. The fingers are more at the center back, and with the pinky at the bottom for stability. I can reach all corners holding it this way. And yes, i got above avarage sized hands. (not my pic)

And with this hold you reach with a thumb from bottom left to bottom right?

Yup! And if i hold it slightly different with the three other fingers more at the center of the back i reach all four corners.

I can barely use swype but image to.
If i had longer fingers it would be perfect.

Swype Beta
Hi all,
I have installed the Swype Beta by removing the built in one by Samsung as it works so much better however if I press the little icon to make the keyboard smaller as shown on the image, it stops working and I have to re-install.
Does anyone know how to fix?, I think it is a resolution issue.
I have also included the link where I found out how to remove the stock one with the beta. Make sure you delete the files recommended on the link as if you just remove it with Titanium, it may stop working after a re-start, at least it did for me.

Remove AT&T emblem

Anyone have any sugggestions on how to remove the at&t emblem from the top right corner without marring the finish?
sugar cube or grains. use search.
DO NOT USE SUGAR, you WILL mar the finish.
Use "Goo-Off" or Nail Polish remover. DO NOT LET IT SIT on the surface. Apply a small amount to a Q-tip and rub in the direction of the grain. (top to bottom on a tilt) So it gently and do NOT over soak the Q-Tip. Go over several times lightly. You want to have several light layered rubs instead of a few heavy ones.
That should do it...

Wrong. This will NOT even phase the att logo. As far as I know, there is no way to remove it without ruining the finish under it. My first tilt (i was returning it anyway for an exchange) I even took an exacto knife to the logo and removed part of one letter to find its kinda etched into the finish under it. Until I see a picture of someones that sucessfully removed it (with no other visible damage under it) in a post here, I wont believe its possible to do.
Yep, I tried all kinds of sugar cubes (cane sugar, crystal sugar, rock sugar) and also nail polish, 100% acetone professional studio strength -- didn't do anything.
Anybody have any bright ideas?
I used thermite to remove the logo and it works great.
Just a side note if you leave it on to long it will eat clear through your phone
This freaking logo is ment to stay for life

I dunno if we mean the same thermite, but the thermite I know becomes very hot if you ignite it! Once it's lit it can evaporate liquid nitrogen (brainiacs)Though you'll need quite some firepower to light it...
Thermite will burn through an engine block. Obviously he's being flipant.

back/bottom button or something???

I think that there is a button or sensor at the bottom of the back side of XPERIA. Beneath the green symbol of SE. When you push it you can feel its like button it clicks.
I guess its the sensor to detect if the phone is put down on the table or any surface. But it does not have any function.
could you show a pic?

Yes. It is the button which turns on the accelerometer. And if you hold it for 5 seconds, Xperia will reboot to hidden WM6.5.

you are all so smart. Are'nt you. Behaving like a Children. I asked a simple question.
Hold it in you hands near you ear and press it very gently. You will hear a clicking sound.
There are phones wich can detect if phone is down on the table or desk. If so your current call will be redirected via speaker. I saw this function in some phones.
Location of this potention button on XPERIA is very logical for that purpose. Its more like button/sensor. Not the button you will press. that was my first idea.
Im not saying its right or wrong. Im just saying that its very logical question and make sense. Its propably not true but its all logical. What is there so funny. Some of us got ours XPERIA for only few days and dont know all about the phone.
Everyone is smart and brave on internet. Real life different story.
There is nothing to press on that spot! You are holding the phone with one of your other fingers on the front side. When you press the back your other finger pushes the lower part of the d-pad or the whole top part rubs against the keyboard one.
Still behaving like a 5 year old. Your answer is not good. But i know its not like i tought. Thats not the point anyway.
I asked simple question. And you are behaving like that. So smart, arogant and confident. Question is very logical for someone who just got their XPERIA X1. I even noticed that sensor earlier on some other Windows Mobile Device.
I have xperia for few days. And dont know all about X1.
You know XPERIA better than me. Becouse of that you are so smart and im not. Are you proud at yourself.
Maybe becouse of this behavior you will get some respect of other members. You are veryy coooool maaannn. Verryy.
What would be your self-esteem and ego like without the internet.
Would it kill you if you tried to explain it nicely. I just want some nice behavior. Dont get me started about things i know... smartass
Yes orelsi is a smart ass
(you're not going to argue that one are you orelsi?)
but having said that your question is stupid and not at all logical denyboy
Actually one of orelsi's better put-downs I think
...and yes I admire him for being SOO COOOOL and want to be just like him
in fact if he smokes or does drugs then I'll have to start myself!
Only problem can be my english. Question is OK and there is no need for arogance. Thats the point. Im not going to argue any more. Not worth it.
This is my last post on this topic.
Hi,
under the green "SE button" is a snap-in holder for the antenna cover. It will stay with a click in the down position if you press hard enough - and the cover will be really fixed in its position.
regards
Actually I have read strange questions which most people found stupid .. and they were not and they were interesting. Like that funny thread about front camera image mirrored, or red led under power button.
But this simply is stupid question. Not everything which clicks is a button. Actually mine does not click at all.
As for the antenna port .. show the photo .. or shut up, there are people here who will force it out. I know you want exactly that.
As for Orelsi .. dude you made me LOL big time with that facepalm picture.
LOL......i check xda as i couldn't sleep. its 3.am in my place.....but this thread makes me feel like i will be awake till the sun rises.....lol.
anyway, there's nothing in that part but a screw. here's the pix.

Galaxy ACE stylus pen?

That's it, I would like to know if anyone has try a stylus pen on ACE. I'm a drawer and painter and I would love to use the Sketchbook app with a pen but I don't know if that would be possible. I tried with a DIY one, that one was for iphone, and didn't work, so what do you think?
Make one with a finger touch ;-)
Sga having a capacitive touch screen only soft fingers touches respond...
[practice random acts of kindness and selfless acts of love]
Lol, thanx! I've been using that app with my finger. The thing is that I saw on ebay, amazon and so, stylus pens for galaxy ACE, but I don't know if it's scam or they truly work
I tried a 10€ capacitive stylus from a retail shop. I don't think you will find it very useful for painting, as it is has a 6mm diameter, but it does work and it will keep your screen clean of fingerprints. I had some trouble swiping, because the rubber tip feels a bit sticky, leading to false taps. Also, mine didn't last very long: after a month or so the rubber tip became too sticky. I know there are styli with cloth tips but I have yet to find one.
I've found several today on an hawker, one of these stylus work well for write or play but I think isn't suitable to draw..
well, if a stylus works on the galaxy note, i dont really see any reason why it shouldnt work on the ace. After all, one capacitive screen works the same way as the other, only the backlight differs(led, etc)

I use this and works very fine:

Interesting!
I bought one from Dealextreme and you really have to push it against the screen to work. Otherwise it will leave a dotted line. It's similar to the other Chinese ones posted here.

He he..superb idea bro
I use my thumb as natural stylus
This suits for tab n note i think
the stylus's on ebay work just fine, but as someone else said, the tip is fairly large so for drawing dont expect much.
depends what drawing software you are using as well, if its one that supports pinch and zoom then you will get reasonable results, but again, never going to produce superb results.
But the ebay ones are about $2 so its not really money wasted. You can still use it for typing, playing games etc.

Ghetto shoulder buttons

I have a psp and thinking of ditching it and replace it with nexus 7 since i am only playing it for ps1 games and there is ps1 emulator for android. The onscreen control is good enough for rpgs which im more interested in but it is missing the shoulder buttons that im used to. So yesterday i thought of something and came out with ghetto shoulder buttons, this is how it looks like connected to R1 button of epsxe (ps1 emulator).

built from aluminium foil, thin wire, and tape. The foil on the corner is exposed and functions as the shoulder button. Aside from it looks, it works really well. I tried creating it using tape and aluminium foil only but it would not work, the button will register as being pressed although im not touching the screen or the foil in the corner. Using wire like in the picture solves this problem.
So this is one way to get a shoulder button for emulators, it is not pretty but it is pretty cheap If anyone has better idea or has seen a product that does the same thing please share
i like them, A* for creativity!

Looks really ghetto that's for sure but I'm thinking if you use black electrical tape it would look way better. I have used electrical tape to block out the blinding capacitive lights on my epic and it worked fine. Maybe cutout a circle on both ends would look good too.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Using a black tape would make it more eye pleasing but i think electrical tape is too sticky. Im using cheap tape so that i can remove it easily and it does not left any sticky traces. The circle cutout is a good idea, i will be doing that when my current one will not stick anymore. I have been removing and sticking back my current ghetto shoulder buttons a few times and it is still sticking well.
Quality idea !
Well done !
Just got me one of this, Digitus Gamekeys
I did a short test to see whats its capable of. I have only used the d-pad and the four-set button. The d-pad sticks well enough without pressing it too much on the screen in fact it will stick by simply dropping it to the screen but the buttons need a bit more work to make it stick good enough to game. Although d-pad sticks really easy but it is a pain to make it working properly. In epsxe with normal size on-screen d-pad, it can go up, down, left, right but it is hard to do diagonal directions. After adjusting the size of the on-screen d-pad a few times, i found that to get best maneuverability is to make the on-screen d-pad really small, smaller than the rubber d-pad sticking on it which makes it hard to really put the rubber d-pad dead center on the on-screen d-pad.
According to the box the buttons have 'original psp soft touch'. I tested this claim and while it is soft and easy to press down but it is also easy to push it in other directions other than down which sometimes makes the buttons unstick from the screen. With the four-set buttons one unsticked button will not cause them to fall so it is easy to fix just stick the button back. For button mashing games, although i havent tested yet but i dont think this will work very well, you will want a real controller. With slower pace games like platformers they are really playable. I tried megaman 7 with gnes and im quite satisfied with the control and response.
In conclusion, to me the digitus gamekey works really well with emulators and works much better than on-screen control with the feel of buttons and button feedback but not on par with a real controller. It costed me 7 euros.
Ok.. thats the end of that, lets get back to topic. I am thinking of creating shoulder button using the 7 buttons left. one button sticks to the screen connected to a button sticked on the corner of the nexus in (hopefully) less ghetto-ey fashion as the one i have now. One of the current ghetto shoulder button is already broken. I forgot the wire i used (awg 32) doesnt like to get bent and twisted very much and part of the wire on the corner got broken. The next build i would like it to be durable and portable so no tape, you can store in your pouch without getting it sticking in. I got some idea but if you got any idea or already have a custom shoulder buttons on your nexus 7 please share

Looks very nice, too bad it's unusable on 7" GTab 2... Looks like the problem with the screen resolution, as some elements are beyond the screen boundaries, and I couldn't find the way to make it work. You can neither see all the folders on the left, nor all the content on the right, whether in portrait or landscape...Might be good on 10" (don't have it, so can't test), but definitely not on 7".

Actually, it's not, at least not for me... What I mean is that when you scroll through folders on the left, it's not a smooth scrolling, but one page at a time, and the "page" is larger than the screen. And even if you remove some folders to eliminate the need for scrolling, you have to keep their number so small that it fits our screen. So, you can't select certain folders, no matter what you do - the app just hides them beyond your screen boundaries. Look at the screenshot example: there are 4 more folders at the bottom on the left, and no way to get to them. And one more item on the right, also out of reach.
It's only usable if you have a very small number of folders to fit the screen on the left, and a very specific number of content items on the right. Kinda like a crippled demo version, I'd say...

Yeah, I noticed that right now that you tell me...
in portrait mode you can reach:
-My Idea; My Diary; travel Journal; Shopping; To-do; Aniversary; My Calendar; Work; Recipe; Thoughts..
By rotating to landscape you can use Email/Print... so we can't reach Scrap and Study folders...
But by pressing folders button, in the bottom... you can edit the order or delete folders that you didn't use!
It will look like this...
Yes, you can do that. But that's what I mean by "crippled" version - you can't use the full intended functionality of the app, you have to always keep in mind the limitations and work around them. The usability depends on your tolerance level for the annoyances, I guess... But it's a great app, for sure.
