[Q] What is HSPA/UMTS/HDSPA/HSUPA ? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Who can say me what these terms does mean please ?

They are all 3g standards. Umts is your typical 3g. Hsdpa and hsupa are faster (download and upload) and HSPA is the fastest. Theoretical download speed of 21mbps. (although you'll never get that fast).

Ok. Thanks for your reply

HSPA speed up to 21mbps or higher 42mbps (Download and uploadl
HSDPA around 21mbps max (Download)
HSUPA around 7mbps (Upload)

Simple question

I'm in Dallas and I get HSPA but for some reason I'm only getting 570k max download speed. Is there a way to get faster speeds like diff radio?

Realistically that's probably on-par for what TMO can provide in your area. They are working on adding more backhaul to towers to support the higher speeds.
Ah i see. So even though they have listed Dallas as one of the few H cities its still not optimal speeds as far as what they have said it should be ?

HSUPA?

I've been reading about roms/kernels/modems with HSUPA. I read some wikipedia and it says it is a data transfer protocol or something. I don't fully understand the benefits. Is it faster than the default 3g?
Thanks,

high speed uplink packet access - hsupa. The cappy comes with hsdpa - high speed download packet access. Both hsupa and hsdpa are built on hspa (conforms to 3g standards). Hsdpa and hsupa are sometimes referred to as hspa+ or 3g+.
And lastly people here have been getting overall faster network speeds with the hsupa modems.

Yes, but so far there has been downside to all the HSUPA kernel mods - BT audio is poor in both directions.
Ok. Thanks for the knowledge!

[Q] When 4g comes out for Captivate will we have to get new phones?

Can we just flash the LTE Modem or will we have to get new phones?
our phones do not have the required hardware to go 4g. i could be wrong but i doubt it. but who cares, by the time at&t actually gets a real 4g, we should all be ready to upgrade.
LTE and HSPA are different. As long as HSPA is pushed then we can go to the max of the phones hardware.

Another amazing post. They walk among us.
Was your old EDGE speed phone capable of getting 3G speeds? X-(
Of course ypur going to need a new phone with a 4G sim card.

What are the max speeds on HSDPA/HSUPA? And just how much are we going to miss?

Miami if you're not going to be helpful in Q/A then why post?
For 3G/4G you need to talk tech not blanket terms it would be easier to know what exactly you are asking.
HSPA+ LTE are the competeing tech one being a new tech (LTE) and one being an advancement of current tech (HSPA+).
Captivates can do um 7M using HSPA (double check gsm arena or the wiki or the manual for the numbers) so any upgrade to the network the device will top out at the max speed the device can support.

Max speeds for HSPA are theoretical. TMO said they would push it up to and over the 50M level while currently upgrades to networks have it at 14-21M though because of the way it works you will not get those speeds real world.

Just pointing out the obvious.

Can it be used in the u.s?

I'm in the process of getting a Samsung Galxaxy s i9000 from Europe (a trade) and I would like to know if I could use it on T-Mobile or AT&t in the United States. Would I have to unlock it or is it already unlocked?? Would love to know as soon as possible... thanks...

You should be able to use it on att. Not sure though if even with the proper modem that you can enable 850hz band. Still has 1900 though so you should be good. As far as unlocked goes, depends if it's a carrier model or not.

I currently have T-Mobile so I was wondering if I could use it with T-Mobile. The internet speeds don't really matter much, I just want it to make and receive calls and texts.

Yes you can.

i9000 supports 3G bands 900/1900/2100
AT&T uses 850 and 1900. So you'll only get 3G on AT&T in 1900 MHz coverage areas.
TMobile uses AWS 3G bands (1700/2100 MHz). It requires BOTH to work on 3G at all, so it will only work on 2G/EDGE.
You could use a Galaxy S i9000T on the entire AT&T 3G coverage, as it supports 850/1900/2100 MHz.

Download speeds

so i live in ny and im getting around 10mb/s download speeds or less. Btw i have the tmobile version and i was wondering if theres a way to improve the speeds somehow.
The best I get is just under 15, Williamsburg. I don't think you can do much better without lte in NYC on T-Mobile from what I've seen.

Are you talking about 3G or wifi?
In 3G (in Italy) i have 15-17mb in download with the international version.
With wifi i have 20 mb in donwload.
