I've been reading about roms/kernels/modems with HSUPA. I read some wikipedia and it says it is a data transfer protocol or something. I don't fully understand the benefits. Is it faster than the default 3g?
Thanks,
Alec5216

high speed uplink packet access - hsupa. The cappy comes with hsdpa - high speed download packet access. Both hsupa and hsdpa are built on hspa (conforms to 3g standards). Hsdpa and hsupa are sometimes referred to as hspa+ or 3g+.
And lastly people here have been getting overall faster network speeds with the hsupa modems.

Yes, but so far there has been downside to all the HSUPA kernel mods - BT audio is poor in both directions.
Ok. Thanks for the knowledge!

Read the modem thread. Try different modems.
Is there anyway I can switch to a server that's in chicago or something?

what server are you talking about? for the speed test app? theres an option on the 2nd tab to switch it to something else.

Ya i found tharmt... but didn't really do anything. I tried switching to the armani modem and ill see how that goes. Hit around 1000kbps but that's it. My upload is around 1300 kbps. Idk why my upload is still larger than my download

Yeah, change your modem around a bit... And also check your APN list.

Not sure if you did this but when you switch your modem you have to change the WCDMA from 1900 to 850. All I9000 modems default to WCDMA 1900.
Taken from Devz3r0 Q4 and Q1 2011 Modems thread
Steps to do this
1.) Dial *#2263#
2.) From the "BAND SELECTION" Menu select "[2] WCDMA BAND"
3.) From the "WCDMA BAND" menu select "[5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)"
4.) Exit out of menu and check to make sure your band is now WCDMA 850 using code *#0011#
Give that a try and see if it affects your connection at all. ATT only supports WDCMA 850. I had the problem with my phone having 50% time without signal and that fixed it.
Good luck

Try going to stock froyo and see if that helps?
CM7
That's weird - I'm on AT&T and I switched it to use the 850 band exclusively and suddenly got no service. This is in Grand Rapids, MI. When I check the GSM status it says its hooked into 1900 band WCDMA. So is something weird with my phone then?
Hey goob, check this out: http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/
If you're in a really coverage area marked as "best" (which is a joke at best sometimes) go back to straight stock froyo for a bit and see if your data speeds increase. If not, call up AT&T and start *****ing at them and tell them about your location and what it says on the coverage map. I'm sure that as long as your a customer in good standing, they'll do something about it. They always do for me.

I mean it might just end up being a credit towards your account or something, but at least they know of the issue.
Helo,
Usinf xt862, stock rom I've discovered that when the test app (*#*#4636#*#*) shows HSPA link data doesnt work, when it changes to UTMS (aka 3g) data flows.
Wondering if there is a way to tell phone to dont try HSPA. Carrier is Telcel, 850mhz band.
A+

Hi Dlucio!
im from telcel Too
and xt862 too
as far as i know, HSPA, is the update of WCDMA/UMTS
telcel sees it as 3.5G while iusacell calls a bluff and callthe same tech 4G
and hspa+ being a further updat without being 4g either.
in telcel in certain areas you have a H instead of the 3G
IN MY case it works FASTER
but answering your question i think that you should select wcdma only and see if it changes. to H and UMTS
Hi guys,
Who can say me what these terms does mean please ?
They are all 3g standards. Umts is your typical 3g. Hsdpa and hsupa are faster (download and upload) and HSPA is the fastest. Theoretical download speed of 21mbps. (although you'll never get that fast).
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
Ok. Thanks for your reply
HSPA speed up to 21mbps or higher 42mbps (Download and uploadl
HSDPA around 21mbps max (Download)
HSUPA around 7mbps (Upload)

hello
i've been googling this for a couple of hours now and i cant seem to find how to solve my problem
i was with my gf today, she has a S3. we are both connected to the same network operator. my signal was E , hers was H .. i went to system settings->about phone->status on both phones and compared signal strength and it was about the same.
my brother's iphone 4s almost always have much faster internet when i'm connected to edge (that means he's not on edge) - he's also connected to the same network operator.
its driving me crazy , why won't my cappy stay connected to hsdpa when its possible? how can i change that ? (WCDMA is preferred, baseband selection is automatic)
i'm using I9000XXJVT modem. was using slim bean rom 4.2.2 build 2.5 (now i'm on build 3) . unofficial semaphore kernel.
about my network operator technology from wikipedia (its a virtual operator):
"Its network is an HSPA+[citation needed] network in the 2100Mhz band, with roaming also available on Cellcom's 1800Mhz GSM[6] and 850Mhz/2100Mhz HSPA+ network."
any help would be appreciated.
The Captivate's Network Frequencies and Data Type: GSM Quadband:850/900/1800/1900MHz
UMTS Tri-band:850/1900/2100MHz

type *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer and then go to phone info, scroll down a little bit and you'll see it .. there is no UMTS there ..
i forgot to mention that I DO GET CONNECTED to hsdpa when there is good signal , but when there is low signal it switches automatically to edge , and i always thought thats normal and its ok , but today i got really surprised , 2 iphones + 1 sgs3 , that were on the same network operator were having much faster internet than i had. i had 2 E bars , the s3 had 2 H bars. and as i said before the s3 had just about the same signal strength (dBm and asu)
thanks for the reply though
Sounds like the iphone 4s and sgs 3 are probably connecting to the 4g network.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
as far as i know there is no 4g in my country yet + the s3 is the international version so it doesnt support 4g anyway (im pretty sure its the same with the iphone)
Change your preferred network to GSM auto (PRL)

Then try desired band

Let us know what the results are for you after you change the preferred type to what i suggested in my previous post.

my network provider supports hsdpa on 850 and 2100mhz and edge on 1800mhz, i still want the 1800mhz where there is no 850/2100mhz signal , but i want it to be 3rd priority (where 850 and 2100 are the first 2 priorities)
theoretically WCDMA preferred should do what i want , but its not. thats whats driving nuts..
thanks for the replies
oh man.. i said it myself , my network provider supports 850mhz .. i'm using i9000 modem , which doesn't support 850mhz hsdpa .. this could be it .. is there any way to check on which band i'm connected right now ?
EDIT: the answer is *#*#0011#*#* .. i'll check this out later when the scenario happens again, and i'll post results (i'm home now and i have full hsdpa signal here, so i cant investigate any further atm)
I live outside of a city with LTE so my phone sometimes fluctuates between that and HSPA+. So, I downloaded the new FCC Speedtest app and decided to try it out today. On HSPA+, my downloads were about 10-11 Mbps, but when it switched to LTE, I could only pull about half that. Is there any way to manually toggle between the two connection types or any suggestions to speed up my LTE speeds? In town, my speeds on LTE are great, not so much where I live.
