With all the negative press on the glass rear.... - Nexus 4 General

I feel obligated to make this post, I've had the nexus 4 for over a month now with the oem bumper case and front and back screen protectors (nothing fancy just your regular wet applicator screen protectors). Now I feel that most people who don't have an issue with the phone will not really post usually its the other way around... people who experience problems usually post and everyone tends to read them.
So after my experience over a month and various drops at bestbuy parking lot, work and driveway... I gotta say the phone holds up fine... No scratches other then some blemishes on the bumper plastic ring, even then the bumper did not chip it's color off which is good. The falls were planned and were random events from regular heights I am 5'11 so I am getting 4-4.5 feet drops.
I am really surprised how people are shattering the glass with phones simply in their pockets, attached are pictures of the damage to the bumper, mind you some drops are on streets with heavy gravel (work). That's my good deed done for today! thanks Google. :good:
and no I don't work for google lol.

You're using a bumper. Obviously its going to be less likely to shatter than having a n4 without one. The only times I've read about shattering is when people weren't using a case.

I have dropped my N4 twice with jsut a wet apply back screen protector. I have two small 'dents' for lack of a better term on the chrome trim ring and thats it.
First from was off my desk ~2.5ft onto hard wood. The second was as i pulled it out of my pocket and spun it to get it facing the right direction, as i spun it (hold the bottom with my thumb and index finger and rotating upwards 180*) it went flying out of my hand on the up swing, hit the car next to me, and hit the ground face first.
I just about pissed myself, stared at it for about 30 seconds and then was woken from my reverie by the (i found out shortly) owner of the vehicle i had 'thrown' my phone at saying "Well, you gonna get that?".
So i picked it up, and not a scratch. The woman said she was glad the phone wasnt broken and went about her business, and i went on my way.
Now i know that this glass is very strong... in certain cases. My S3 dropped about 3 feet, but had a small chip nicked out of the edge of the glass and the whole thing shatters. This is to the the way Gorilla glass is designed, it doesnt do well with vertex damage at all.
I will post some photos up of the N4 and S3 post drop when i am home

my room mate dropped his many times with no case. it's hit or miss on a shatter. my room mates barely has a blemish and it smashed tile from 4ft. he's clumsy and drops it all the time. we have insurance anyway but it has withstood his clumsyness pretty well. i on the other hand, have not dropped it once. pristine as a whistle.

Awesome.
Another glass thread.
Looking forward to this quality read.

Anyway, I've dropped mine yesterday on my driveway NAKED and it's 100% fine.

Looks like xtremeguard. I thought the same. I bought both skinomi and xtremeguard. The skinomi arrived first so I installed it in front and xtremeguard in back. The skinomi cutout edges move when warmed and become misaligned but easy enough to reposition since they are so fine.
I have a nillkin installed, have dropped, tossed and tumbled my phone but less than 1-2 feet high. I also carry my phone in my pocket.

lol mine flew out of my pocker did 3 360 spins on concrete on its sides.. the back glass broke just a teeny bit and ii got 3 dents on screws on mic and chrome lol

Really the only press about this is on a couple forums and blogs. I don't think our is nearly as bad as it seems from the posts..
Let's just say there were 200 threads where people cried about dropping and breaking the glass. Even with that amount the percentage seems low compared to how many devices are out there. I should also add that the 200 number seems high.
Good to hear they will have Gorilla Glass 3 now!! Our next devices will be even better..
While on the glad topic I just really gotta say that this glad odds just so smooth and so great for a touchscreen. I was comparing the nex4 glass to the glad my HP touchpad and man what a difference. It feels harder and so much smoother. I think it is the coating makes it so smooth.
Actually I have hypothesis that the back glass is uncoated and this is one of the reasons out is weaker and less scratch resistant. I also think it had to do with the cuttings and the lack of anything behind it to help support it.
Sorry guys... Feeling loopy.. supposed to be finishing a large project and have been up for 2 days. Sucks..

How do you protect your DINC?

I want to see how other users protect the DINC as I have my methods, and I want to see the best solution.
IN a perfect world I would rock it naked, but knowing that i have dropped the phone like 30 times, this is not an option..
Im using the Seidio Innocase II on my Dinc and I find I like this case best..
Should I use a screen protector on my next phone? I dont use one now... but i paid dearly.... I was using a smaller case and the phone fell face first to the ground and when i picked it up it has small hairline scratches on the screen...
Needless to say I switched back to the safety of the Seidio Innocase II with its lip to protect falling on its face, but..
I dont know what to do.. Im not going to buy a screen and replace it..
and I hate screen protectors...
Hmm... What to do for next time.
Hate or not it's still cheaper than replacing the screen. I use the Seidio Innocase II with the Seidio crystal screen protector and have droped my phone about 100 times so far and no damage.
Hmm, i dunno
i have a Seidio SURFACE case with a ZAGG screen protector (only reason i got this was because of the life time warranty). not one scratch, dent, or anything on the body or screen of the phone. the case how ever has been through hell and back.
I keep mine where it's safe

Seideo active case, no screen protector.
Had a screen protector on it before and my screen shattered, only cost $30 to replace anyway so if anything happens bad enough again, I'll just replace again.
Likely won't ever or at least won't happen for a long while.
I used the gloss silicone cover sold by Verizon for the first year that worked very well and protected my phone from drops onto concrete, brick, and marble. I just bought the $5 Speck case from Verizon that I really like so far but haven't "tested" it.
I used a screen protector for a while, but didn't like the rainbows caused by finger smudges, so now my screen is unprotected (but still in perfect condition).
Silicone case and my pleather HTC belt case. No screen protector i got sick of them. I cook pizza and stupid flour used to always get wedged under my screen protector so i stopped using them.
Hmm yea i will prob stick to the seidio innocase screen protectors suck

I think screen protectors get a bad rap because of installation issues. I bought a three pack of screen protectors from Amazon for less than a buck, and they work great. Spend the time to install them right and I haven't had one come off.
It might be slightly more prone to fingerprints and glare but the ones I use are clear with no rainbowing.

Verizon screen protector and speck shell. Both of these work great together.
Sent from my HTC Incredible using XDA App
I use the Verizon shell/holster combo. Well, I don't actually use the combo, just the shell. It's a one-piece cover that clips onto the phone. The shell protects the camera lens and its edges help protect the screen as well. Since the shell doesn't cover the ends of the phone (just the sides), I can wipe the screen off without getting an accumulation of grease and dirt just inside the shell's edges.
I have never used a screen protector. I got my DInc days after its initial release and still have a perfectly smooth screen, so why bother? I usually put the phone in an otherwise empty pocket, whether it be in jeans, cargo shorts, or a jacket.
I do have a few very minor nicks along the top and bottom edges of the phone, but they can barely be felt and you have to hold the phone at the perfect angle to see them.
I'm hoping my next phone and case hold up as well as my DInc.
For a year my phone was naked, got dropped a couple times on tile floors and hardwood - the battery door would fly off, sometimes the battery would pop out - took it like a champ. Then my poor phone met concrete paving stones. It didn't like them and the screen shattered. So after getting a replacement it now resides under a screen cover from htcpedia and a silicone case.
Rocked it naked for about 6 months until it took its first drop, now it's in an OtterBox Commuter series case without screen protector. only a couple minor scratches around the outside edge of the phone from the drop, screen has minor wear and tear (small surface scratches, have to be in BRIGHT light to see them).
I have the invisible shield for the face and I have the seidio active burgundy case and they work great together. The invisible shield is great and the response on the touch screen is like its not even there.
It would take a lot of hard thrashing to even begin to damage my incredible.
Trident Kraken Case
Zagg screen protector (because it's never gone more than a minute without a screen protector...ever)
I watched a video of a shop selling the Trident Kraken and they put the phone in the case, climbed a ladder 10 feet high, and dropped the phone from the top and his arm's length. He let go and it bounced a couple times upon hitting the PAVEMENT. He got down and showed the camera that it was still perfectly alright. I was sold, and bought the case a few minutes later online. They have many different colors and replacement parts. I got grey/black.
I took the phone out a few weeks ago to change the battery and it still looks as good as it did the day I bought it. I've dropped it, bouced it, even thrown it all the way accross my shop to someone who didn't catch it and it hit a toolbox instead. Didn't even scuff the case.
Sure it's a bit larger, but I don't mind at all since I've been looking for a tough android smartphone since android came out. And since I had to buy the entire phone myself not on a plan, I don't get insurance, so the case doubles as my insurance policy, as well as making it strong enough to take to work with me and not have to worry too much.
Take a look at the Trident Kraken. Its also cheaper than other comparable tough cases.
I will only buy Otterbox cases, I have the Commuter case on my inc with their screen protector.
I have owned several seidio cases, they just don't match the quality or customer service of Otterbox.
I am biased because my dog recently went after my phone and the otterbox saved it from destruction
I'll be honest, when I first got my Inc, I had nothing on it for about 2 weeks. I ordered some cheap case/screen protector/car charger for like 4 bux on ebay. It's the same case the kiosk at my mall sells for 20. So I laughed. It was super tight on it when I first put it on, but because of the stupid design for the sd card under the back cover, I had to remove it. After taking off a few times, it started being very lose, and eventually broke.
The screen protector has held up pretty well, other than a deep gash in one spot, but it's not in the functional part of the screen, but in the blackened part towards the top right corner.
Recently, I picked up a *speck case from Verizon for like 5 bucks, and it's made my Inc the perfect size for my hand. The other case gave me problems with hitting the "p" button when I texted because of my fat fingers lol. The speck case is absolutely perfect. Would prefer it was pure black rather than red rimming, but it'll suffice until I upgrade to the Vigor.
Had a kraken and since have gone back to the vzm high gloss silicone case. This case has saved my phone a number of times and I consider the incredible to be a durable phone. I've thrown this phone through a wall and its still working.

I used to have it in a (pleather?) case I got from verizon when I got it. That lasted about a year before it got too worn down. I then had it in a cheap case that was horrible and I ended up throwing away, so now it is not in a case.
I always have a screen protector on it. If there is one thing that is super annoying on a phone when it gets scratched, its the screen.

Xtreme Guard screen protector review

Cut: 8
Grip: 6
Clarity: 7 (initial)
Ease of install: 2
Glare: 9
Starting with cut, I gotta say the cut is not perfect, but it is pretty good. I did notice flaws near the corners and on the cut-out for the front facing camera. Not a big deal but this is a review right? The cut is definitely not a deal breaker. (pics below, before install)

Ok now when I talk about grip, I'm talkin about how grippy it is during touchscreen use, not just holding the device. There is nothing I hate more than when I am doing some swipe gestures on the screen and I feel like my finger catches goin along here. I have a real problem with the invisible shield line because of this and that is why I don't bother with them. I didn't know at the time what kind of a screen protector the xtreme gaurd one was when I purchased it, but it was (still is) a cheap screen protector for the size device that it is made for. This protector is similar to the invisible shield line, but much better in my opinion. Still grippy (hence the rating above), but not terribly so. I will probably keep this on the device for protection sake until I find a different option.
Clarity is not bad at all. I gave it an initial rating of 7 because I just installed it and it has yet to dry. And that gives me a good segue into install.
I gotta say install was a pain in the butt. This is a wet install screen per the directions. All other wet application screen protectors I have used on my devices, the glue seemed to de-activate when wet. Not this one, it was sticking the whole time I was trying to get it on there. I actually ended up puddling soap/water solution right onto the screen of the N7 to keep the screen from sticking as I rolled it on there. I took me 2 tries to get it on there with minimal bubbles. Now I am no professional screen protector installer, but should I have to be to get this done with minimal difficulty and frustration? The next hour after I got it on the screen was spent trying to scrape the bubbles of water and air out from under the screen, which was difficult because this protector is soo dang sticky! It probably would have been easier if I could have found my rubber screen squeegie instead of the card scrapper they provide with the kit. After install pics below, you can see some of the bubbles left over even after scrapping the screen for an hour.
Lastly glare: I think this thing actually reduced the glare a bit. It not being dry yet may affect this, so I will have to keep an eye on it to see. With it being still wet the peaks and valleys of the bubbles still present maybe the affecting factor here.
Well that's it over all not a bad protector in my opinion, but not the best. I myself prefer the harder dry install protectors, so am a little biased. But at this price point it's hard to nitpick too bad on this one.
I agree with your review as an initial impression. After 4 days with this protector on, it's a LOT less grippy on the exterior now. Within the first day and a half all of the water bubbles disappeared. The only problem I have with this protector now is very faint vertical "rainbow" lines in the center. They aren't noticeable unless I'm actively looking for them, though.
i got xtremeguards for my n7 and my touchscreen would barely respond i got them to give me a refund
agreed, i tried installing this because of how cheap it was and ended up getting so frustrated that i trashed it. Not only that but the material stretches so once i got halfway done w/ minimal bubbles, i noticed i had almost 5cm's overlapping the top of the N7.

LOL, I did the same thing. IMHO these are POS. Extremely difficult to install (wet+electronic is not a good mix-almost f'ed up my N7 speakers) and scratches way too easy. After a while of trying to install it I just gave up. I could never get a really clean install and kept retrying until I finally said screw it and toss it. Been happy ever since. It's just too bad I wasted $7.5 on these.
I purchased four of these. I followed the instructions when installing the first one and ended up trying to reapply it twice. I decided to try the applicator spray and rubber squeegee that came with my Zagg protector for my S II. The spray and rubber squeegee allowed me to put the protector on my N7 the first try and with very little effort.
Adding my 2 cents.
Just installed today. Despite the initial dirty black grits on it, a good wash got them all off. The cuts are good enough for a nice fit. However, if you opt for the full body protector, the back sticker will not cover the silver plastic rim. That kinda sucks because I've already noticed some dings and scratches at those vulnerable areas.
As for clarity, gotta wait till tomorrow to see. In terms of responsiveness, no problems at all. I waited about 30 minutes, booted the N7 up and it was responded as usual.
I use dish soap with water. I'd use very very little soap. Enough to make very few bubbles.

I wish I would have been able to find these items, they are hands down the best tools for the job. The spray sprays a super fine mist that gives the most even light coverage that is perfect for screen protector installation, and the rubber squeegee doesn't mar the surface.
This was my first wet install, others have been dry screen protectors and was smooth. The cut is great on mine, the tablet responds any where I touch. When you install it, give it a day to dry before complaining. If you ever had your car window tinted, it's the same way!!! Air bubbles the first 24-48 hours and it goes away.
Good grief.

thanks for the pic, did you got the regular or anti glare one?

I applied the protector yesterday. The screen seems pretty unresponsive. I'm going to give it another few hours to cure properly.

After I let mine sit overnight its 100% perfect, no bubbles underneath and it's nearly as responsive as without it. Glad to have the high level of protection at just a couple bucks.

Mines pretty great too. I had a few tiny bubbles after
24 hours but I pushed them out. Now it looks perfect. Much better then my first install of an XO brand on my galaxy nexus.
I also slapped one on my kids Galaxy Tab. His looks great too.
Textile feedback isn't as noticeable as the XO. Really I dont even notice a difference in usage from a nekkid screen. Sure it has a slightly different feel but wet protectors usually feel tacky at first and get better after about a week. If this gets any better ill have to buy another for my galaxy nexus while they're on sale.

Modified My Samsung Cover

The first thing I purchased for my Note 2 was a case. I was always disappointed with how the bezel around the edge of my Galaxy Nexus had the paint chipped away after little to no abuse. I wanted to make sure that this didn't happen with my new phone.
That being said, I was never super happy with the case's look/finish. I'm pleased with the protection and coverage (luckily I haven't tested out it's drop protection ). When I had the phone on my desk and tried to swipe the screen, I would just start sliding the phone around on the desktop. This also led to small scuffs/scratches on the glossy back. Also, in certain light, they textured sides looked to be almost a light blue/grey in color which didn't look all that good IMO against the glossy black back.

with flash (over exaggerates the color and texture difference)
All taped up. Make sure to tape up under the lip. I used a bent piece of metal as a holding stick so I could move the cover around to get coverage on the back, sides, and face.
Enter the Plasti Dip:
After first light coat:
After some dry time:
2nd coat:
after dry time:
3rd coat (heavy coat):
after dry time:
Turns out, I didn't get the face/lip nearest the earpiece good enough. From looking online, I saw/read where this PlastiDip stuff doesn't bond to the surface and can be pealed off at any time. That's one of the reasons I felt so comfortable using this stuff on my case. I was a bit worried that it wouldn't come off of the textured sides, but I got to test it out.
I was tempted to just respray over the light area, but I had been using the phone for about a day before I noticed. I didn't want to risk having some dirt/oil/contaminate on it, so I went to peel it up and start over:
Turns out, the lines in the case make it come off in sections. I ended up leaving the Plasti-Dip covering the old gloss sections. It feels better in the hands this way and it still keeps the phone firmly in place when swiping the screen while sitting on a hard/slick surface.
It also blends in better in color and texture (this was taken after I peeled away the Plasti Dip from the sides)
Really nice. Im going to try this once the back gets more scratches than it already has. Thanks for the idea

that looks really sharp! I'd like to know how it feels after a week or more. Does the plastidip start flaking or peeling off?
The plasti dip I have smells like peanuts...
It makes for a strange situation when you pull the phone out of your pocket around other people.
They should sell scented plasti dip. Watermelon would be great...
Or peppermint.
Looks great. I'll probably do that once the housing is scratched up. It's strange to coat the phone to protect it from scratching but then never get to appreciate the beauty because it's all covered up.
Looks great. My issue with plastidip on phones is that they no longer sliiiideeee. I keep mine in my pocket so it's a non-starter.

The fact that it keeps the phone from sliding was one of the big reasons for me doing this. I don't like it sliding around on hard surfaces when I'm trying to one-finger-drive with it on a desk/counter/table. The only time I had a problem with it being too "grippy" in a pocket was when I was wearing exercise pants with a mesh pocket. It was even less pocket-pulling grippy when I pulled off the PlastiDip from around the sides. When I pull my phone out of my pocket, I tend to grab it in a way where my thumb is on the screen and my 4 other fingers are on the back side - so the only part contacting the pocket is the sides.
Looks nice
Might try some clear plasti dip on the back of my Samsung flip case

I tried using plastidip on the back cover itself before I got any cases. I may not have applied it well or something, but mine started peeling within 3 days.
I had some pictures up in the "Post a picture of your case along with your Note 2" thread but search is currently unavailable and I'm far too lazy to go through that number of pages to find them.
Also for any brits looking to do this: it's probably cheaper to buy a new case, plastidip has a ridiculous markup in the UK (about £17 for a spray can, compared to $6 in the US. That works out to nearly $30 for a single can of plastidip)
I must try this with the back of my flip cover. I hope they make silver plasti-dip cause and orange with silver flip cover would look sick. ^o^

sorry for not delivering as promised on the pictures. my fiance had a death in the family and had to travel back to Malaysia for the ceremonies.
the PlastiDip pulled up on mine as well. and before i could get any pictures, her nephew peeled the rest off (brat!).
i'm not sure if it was because of the 3 light coats i put on it or if it was just he nature of the beast. but i really liked the grip that it gave so i'm going to try it again this time with more coats as well as use a degreaser to clean it first (i only wiped it down with diluted windex the first time).
i make no promises on when i'll get to do it other than "soon." but i'll post pics and results in this thread when i do.
Has anyone tried this with just a Epoxy Coating spray on? It's suppose to do same thing.
This is great idea! Good job with the plastidip coating! I am definitely going to do this to my phone. BUT this time, with my back cover for the phone itself..
That came out really nice! I'm tempted to do it to my note 2 flip cover tmobile gave me for free.

[Video] Nexus 5 scratch test

Just got my White Nexus 5 last night... Here's a scratch test on the new gorilla glass 3 screen. Personally I'm not a fan of using screen protectors, I never liked the orange peel feel when using the screen. I've always felt they take away from the smooth touch experience of the glass.
Anyhow, here's the video if you're bored and wanted to see:
Nexus 5 screen vs box cutter, xacto knife, coins, keys
http://youtu.be/b_7PBy_2z8E
lol
lol
I prefer not to use a screen protector myself.
But while a box cutter, xacto knife, coins, and keys will not scratch glass, other common elements as quartz and topaz WILL scratch glass.
In reality, most sand consists of quartz, so if you happened to have a couple of grains of sand in your pocket or along your keys, then you wouldn't be so lucky
Also, any diamond ring/earing/etc. will obviously scratch the glass as well.
In the end, there's plenty of reasons to get a screen protector. Steel/copper/etc. are not the only things people may have touching their screen :good:
Also if you happened to impact the screen and shatter it, a screen protector could potentially hold the shards in place (much like window tint). Preventing you from getting bloody fingers and retaining the ability to use your phone. (I don't think most screen protectors are marketed for this, since other elements of the screen can break besides the glass on impact, but it's a practical benefit nonetheless)
*edit*
See the Mohs scale of hardness. Glass/Gorilla glass is around 6/7 I think. Steel is around a 5.
but why? lol, thank you? I personally haven't used a screen protector since my HTC Mogul.. never had a single scratch on any device over the years. Phone gets a pocket to itself, loose change, keys, and whatever else go in the other.

The interesting thing is this new sapphire glass (apple uses it over the iPhone fingerprint button), is significantly harder than normal glass so sand won't harm it.
In the near future we'll probably see that more widespread.

I've never seen a screen protector with anything that could be described as orange peel, although I'll agree, they gain friction as they wear and pick up fine scratches. And sure, they'll scratch far easier than the actual screen would, but at ~$1 each, I'm fine replacing them once or twice a year.
As for bubbles, if you're getting bubbles, you simply aren't installing them correctly. I've never had bubbles under mine, and they're virtually unnoticeable save for the little edge on the cutouts around the speaker, camera and sensors. If you have a spec underneath causing a bubble, just slip in a piece of scotch tape, gently push it down onto the spec, and pull it out. Easiest way to get any bubble causing hairs or pieces of dust out.
And as the others have said, Gorilla Glass may protect against big things like coins and keys, but it's the little grains of sand that'll get 'ya.
I agree, it's the quartz that will scratch up the screens.I use a flip case that doubles as my car mount so my phone is protected the bulk of the time it's not in use. And when it is in use, clean, smooth and naked.

Considering apple purchased roughly a $600 million stockpile of synthetic sapphire and just got that plant for their supplier I'd have to agree.
But will it blend?
The whole screen protector debate is a double edged sword. There are pros and cons to each, and neither is perfect.
1. While you might not scratch the screen, you will wear away the oleophobic coating on the glass. I've rocked a SP on my N4 since day 1, and since it leaves a sizable gap around the edge of the screen, I can see where the coating is now missing on that unprotected part. When I do remove the SP every now and then to replace it, it's amazing to see how easily finger oils stick to the outer edge of the screen and not under the protected section. I can almost feel a lip with my fingernail. You might not notice the difference over time, but I'd rather maintain that coating, and should I wish to go naked one day or one week (which I often do), it looks and feels like a brand new device. I also don't baby my phone, keeping it in my pocket all day at work in a manufacturing shop with a lot of dust and debris in the air, and where I'm constantly moving.
2. Sure, the SP wears out quicker than the coating does, but they're replaceable. I rocked my Gnex naked for a year and it has a myriad of small scratches and one or two deeper ones that are noticeable with the screen on. Wish I'd protected it, but the curved screen just made dry SPs look ridiculous, and I don't use wet ones.
3. Sapphire screens may not ever come to fruition, and if they do, there will be additional drawbacks. Sapphire is extremely hard and resistant to scratches, but it's also very brittle and susceptible to shattering. It works for watch crystals and iPhone home buttons, because they're relatively small and can be made extremely thick. But a phone display is much larger and thinner, and I don't know how manufacturers will overcome that.

Well I owned nexus one ,nexus s, galaxy nexus , nexus 4 and now nexus 5 .all without screen protector. I never get into problem of screen scratches . my phone is always in a sleeve while keeping it in my pant .
Typically I used the phone for close to a year till next nexus phone come out..
I have a tailored made leather pocket that I used since galaxy nexus which fit for nexus 4 and nexus 5 .. that could be the reason of phone not subjected to scratches by sands or similar objects

Well the video is cool and all, but I gotta say the white Nexus 5 screen so far isn't very resilient when it comes to screen durability.
I've owned numerous phones including the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 and now Nexus 5. All except for the 5 have held up really well.
I've got tons of micro-scratches and until now I haven't seen the need for a screen protector, but I think it's too late!
I gotta say the 5 is horrible! WTF! I thought it had Gorilla Glass 3. Gorilla 3 has gone soft
I've owned the phone for less than 2 weeks and it's got more micro scratches on it then my Nexus 4 did when I sold after 6 months of usage.
I must add that I love the phone and it is head and shoulders above the Nexus 4 which is anemic in comparison! No regrets!

Haha woah what are you doing to the poor phone man? Mine has held up well with out a screen protector and no scratches. Granted I've only had it for almost 3 weeks. While I don't think these screens are weak at all, I'm almost positive dropping it face down on concrete will damage it..not going to test that though.
That's why I'm waiting for the Ballistic SGMax case series to come out for the Nexus 5 and it will, eventually.

I'm doing the exact same thing I've done with every other phone which is using the thing! Nothing more. Nothing less.
In that respect it's been a huge letdown for sure, but it's head and shoulders above the Nexus 4.

Nice internet speed man
Although sharp objects don't scratch the glass, a simple drop on concrete will.
I use a screen protector because I know over time just 1 grain of sand getting in your pocket isn't impossible. I've had a sh!t ton of phones in my life and each time near the end of life (basically before I want to go out and splurge on a new phone) I take off the screen protector and let it run for a few months. Inevitable, it picks up scratches. My iPhone 5 has scratches after 9 months. It was a work phone so I said screw screen protectors. The NExus 4 I took off the screen protector after Google significantly cut prices over the summer.
My conclusion is that it's not too hard to get your screen scratched over time. However I hate plastic protectors too, so I use the Spigen Glas series. It's solid and it keeps your phone in good shape while feeling good.
"No scratches" to one person doesn't necessarily mean "no scratches" to another. A lot of people simply won't notice common micro scratches. They are often very hard to see, especially with the screen on. Though, once they catch the light a certain way they are an eye sore.

How to remove scratches on Galaxy note 4 bezel!

Hey all,
I have noticed a lot of people saying that their Galaxy Note 4 bezel has been scratching....
I think I have found a fix!!
This is the stuff I used, I litretely put a very little on my finger and rubbed it all over the polished edges and left it to sit for 2 minutes then I used a micro fibre cloth to buff it.
From what I can see I have no more scratches on my phone so it worked for me, I have a Wrap on my phone to the non polished sides are covered so none of the Polish went on there, I don't think it would cause damage but I will not be held responsible for any damages ??
Just sharing what worked for me ?
This is the stuff I used.

Yea agreed 100% but I have been reading through the forum and people are saying that their cases are scratching their devices. ☺

Any case will scratch the bezels.
Any polish used to remove scratches will make the paintwork shiny over a long period of time. Mine are now gloss.
And on a side note, the metal is ****. I dropped mine on a tea cup on my desk and dented it. Plastic oddly enough would have bounced off.
I thought the metal would be tough, however it's crap. So I would advise case up, accept the scratches and enough the device.

You are correct but I don't remove case often enough to be bothered by some scratches. Phone has aluminum bezel and there is no way is not going to be scratched until you apply some kind hard clear coat (like car finish). If you keep polishing it too many times, I'm affraid that you may damage color (black, white, gold...) plastic coating which may lift of the metal. Using ultra fine scotch brite polishing pad is probably the way to go or maybe 2000+ grit sand paper. I would recommend to mask gap around screen and home button. I did put little of clear silicone, rub it in gap and wipe it dry. You cant see it but gives me extra protection from dust, moisture going into gap around screen glass.

If you apply anything strong enough to get rid of the scratches you will have a gloss paint job. Mine is now and I friggin hate it, I wish I had left it alone now.
To also add-on, your phone is destined to have scratches whether you put a case on or not. Don't be surprised or shocked if you see your phone having light scratches on the chamfered edges before taking the phone out its retail box. Welcome to the World of Logistics.

I have a hunch on this...I will be successful...oh yes...I will be successful
I'll have to refer back to this thread when my bezel inevitably gets scuffed up.

Use oil if you do as a lubricant to make a smoother finish.

I've done it and it works perfectly
UPDATE:
After careful maneuvering, I successfully used the 1500 grit automotive sandpaper to get rid of every single scratch that was present on the phone's bezel. It took 15-20 minutes in total.
Pro's: No more scratches
Less than 5 dollars for parts
Con's: None, really. The aluminum does not however shine like before. It's still shiny, but has more of a raw shine. Doesn't bother me a bit, and I somewhat prefer it (too early to tell for sure). To me, this phone looks like an every day workhorse now, not a pristine toy. After I finished, I immediately said....bad a**.
Hope this helps.

I will post pictures tomorrow. Stay tuned.
1500 Grit Sandpaper Method
Okay, so here are the results after using 1500 grit automotive sandpaper to fix the tiny scratches all over the bezel. I am very pleased with the outcome.
Process took about 15 minutes. As mentioned in another post, it doesn't have that same shine too it, but in my opinion, this one looks cleaner. Use precision, and do not press too hard or risk unwanted marks on your phone. Enjoy!

You dont have to stop on 1500. There are sandpapers going to 5000 (highest I have seen). After that use polishing compound.
