Just got my White Nexus 5 last night... Here's a scratch test on the new gorilla glass 3 screen. Personally I'm not a fan of using screen protectors, I never liked the orange peel feel when using the screen. I've always felt they take away from the smooth touch experience of the glass.
Anyhow, here's the video if you're bored and wanted to see:
Nexus 5 screen vs box cutter, xacto knife, coins, keys
http://youtu.be/b_7PBy_2z8E
lol
lol
I prefer not to use a screen protector myself.
But while a box cutter, xacto knife, coins, and keys will not scratch glass, other common elements as quartz and topaz WILL scratch glass.
In reality, most sand consists of quartz, so if you happened to have a couple of grains of sand in your pocket or along your keys, then you wouldn't be so lucky
Also, any diamond ring/earing/etc. will obviously scratch the glass as well.
In the end, there's plenty of reasons to get a screen protector. Steel/copper/etc. are not the only things people may have touching their screen :good:
Also if you happened to impact the screen and shatter it, a screen protector could potentially hold the shards in place (much like window tint). Preventing you from getting bloody fingers and retaining the ability to use your phone. (I don't think most screen protectors are marketed for this, since other elements of the screen can break besides the glass on impact, but it's a practical benefit nonetheless)
*edit*
See the Mohs scale of hardness. Glass/Gorilla glass is around 6/7 I think. Steel is around a 5.
but why? lol, thank you? I personally haven't used a screen protector since my HTC Mogul.. never had a single scratch on any device over the years. Phone gets a pocket to itself, loose change, keys, and whatever else go in the other.

The interesting thing is this new sapphire glass (apple uses it over the iPhone fingerprint button), is significantly harder than normal glass so sand won't harm it.
In the near future we'll probably see that more widespread.

I've never seen a screen protector with anything that could be described as orange peel, although I'll agree, they gain friction as they wear and pick up fine scratches. And sure, they'll scratch far easier than the actual screen would, but at ~$1 each, I'm fine replacing them once or twice a year.
As for bubbles, if you're getting bubbles, you simply aren't installing them correctly. I've never had bubbles under mine, and they're virtually unnoticeable save for the little edge on the cutouts around the speaker, camera and sensors. If you have a spec underneath causing a bubble, just slip in a piece of scotch tape, gently push it down onto the spec, and pull it out. Easiest way to get any bubble causing hairs or pieces of dust out.
And as the others have said, Gorilla Glass may protect against big things like coins and keys, but it's the little grains of sand that'll get 'ya.
I agree, it's the quartz that will scratch up the screens.I use a flip case that doubles as my car mount so my phone is protected the bulk of the time it's not in use. And when it is in use, clean, smooth and naked.

Considering apple purchased roughly a $600 million stockpile of synthetic sapphire and just got that plant for their supplier I'd have to agree.
But will it blend?
The whole screen protector debate is a double edged sword. There are pros and cons to each, and neither is perfect.
1. While you might not scratch the screen, you will wear away the oleophobic coating on the glass. I've rocked a SP on my N4 since day 1, and since it leaves a sizable gap around the edge of the screen, I can see where the coating is now missing on that unprotected part. When I do remove the SP every now and then to replace it, it's amazing to see how easily finger oils stick to the outer edge of the screen and not under the protected section. I can almost feel a lip with my fingernail. You might not notice the difference over time, but I'd rather maintain that coating, and should I wish to go naked one day or one week (which I often do), it looks and feels like a brand new device. I also don't baby my phone, keeping it in my pocket all day at work in a manufacturing shop with a lot of dust and debris in the air, and where I'm constantly moving.
2. Sure, the SP wears out quicker than the coating does, but they're replaceable. I rocked my Gnex naked for a year and it has a myriad of small scratches and one or two deeper ones that are noticeable with the screen on. Wish I'd protected it, but the curved screen just made dry SPs look ridiculous, and I don't use wet ones.
3. Sapphire screens may not ever come to fruition, and if they do, there will be additional drawbacks. Sapphire is extremely hard and resistant to scratches, but it's also very brittle and susceptible to shattering. It works for watch crystals and iPhone home buttons, because they're relatively small and can be made extremely thick. But a phone display is much larger and thinner, and I don't know how manufacturers will overcome that.

Well I owned nexus one ,nexus s, galaxy nexus , nexus 4 and now nexus 5 .all without screen protector. I never get into problem of screen scratches . my phone is always in a sleeve while keeping it in my pant .
Typically I used the phone for close to a year till next nexus phone come out..
I have a tailored made leather pocket that I used since galaxy nexus which fit for nexus 4 and nexus 5 .. that could be the reason of phone not subjected to scratches by sands or similar objects

Well the video is cool and all, but I gotta say the white Nexus 5 screen so far isn't very resilient when it comes to screen durability.
I've owned numerous phones including the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 and now Nexus 5. All except for the 5 have held up really well.
I've got tons of micro-scratches and until now I haven't seen the need for a screen protector, but I think it's too late!
I gotta say the 5 is horrible! WTF! I thought it had Gorilla Glass 3. Gorilla 3 has gone soft
I've owned the phone for less than 2 weeks and it's got more micro scratches on it then my Nexus 4 did when I sold after 6 months of usage.
I must add that I love the phone and it is head and shoulders above the Nexus 4 which is anemic in comparison! No regrets!

Haha woah what are you doing to the poor phone man? Mine has held up well with out a screen protector and no scratches. Granted I've only had it for almost 3 weeks. While I don't think these screens are weak at all, I'm almost positive dropping it face down on concrete will damage it..not going to test that though.
That's why I'm waiting for the Ballistic SGMax case series to come out for the Nexus 5 and it will, eventually.

I'm doing the exact same thing I've done with every other phone which is using the thing! Nothing more. Nothing less.
In that respect it's been a huge letdown for sure, but it's head and shoulders above the Nexus 4.

Nice internet speed man
Although sharp objects don't scratch the glass, a simple drop on concrete will.
I use a screen protector because I know over time just 1 grain of sand getting in your pocket isn't impossible. I've had a sh!t ton of phones in my life and each time near the end of life (basically before I want to go out and splurge on a new phone) I take off the screen protector and let it run for a few months. Inevitable, it picks up scratches. My iPhone 5 has scratches after 9 months. It was a work phone so I said screw screen protectors. The NExus 4 I took off the screen protector after Google significantly cut prices over the summer.
My conclusion is that it's not too hard to get your screen scratched over time. However I hate plastic protectors too, so I use the Spigen Glas series. It's solid and it keeps your phone in good shape while feeling good.
"No scratches" to one person doesn't necessarily mean "no scratches" to another. A lot of people simply won't notice common micro scratches. They are often very hard to see, especially with the screen on. Though, once they catch the light a certain way they are an eye sore.

I just read through the other thread here titled "Free Military Grade" and I seriously can't believe that its still a sticky here!
Anyway coming back to topic, I just received the XtremeGuard Screen protector for my HD2 and to come straight to the point - this is the best screenguard you can buy at this rate!
I've personally used Zagg and Bestskinsever for the rest of my Devices (iPad and iPhone 4) and can without a doubt say that the material used here is the SAME!
I got the Full Body Screen Protector for just 6$ off Ebay incl. Shipping (WorldWide Shipping).
The quality is same as the Zagg I currently have applied to my iPad.
If you are looking for a screenguard then I haven't seen anyone else offering this quality at such a low rate.
Note: This is no paid review or anything. Just my pure personal experience.
You can buy from their site : http://www.xtremeguard.com/ or directly order one from Ebay. I'd go with Ebay simply cause of their guarantee and money back policies.
What I don't like about those screen protectors like Invisible shield and bestskinsever is the rubbery feel left on your screen. Your fingers don't glide like it would on protector-less screen. Does this one have the same rubbery feel to it?
I currently use Vikuiti (TM) DQC-160: http://www.protectionfilms24.com/article/vikuiti-screen-protector-dqc160-htc-hd2-28087.html
It's like having no protector at all. The screen protector glides perfectly, no rubbery feeling. They also have a promo, buy 2 get 1 free, so you get 3 screen protectors... And unlike the skins that have to be installed with soapy water, these go on without water and are even washable and reusable!
I've tried all screen protectors imaginable (Bodyguardz, zagg, Clearprotector, bestskinsever, cheap ebay protectors, etc.) and Vikuiti is the best I've used...
What bothers me about Xtremeguards is they say Zagg is not military grade and theirs are. But Zagg was the first to boast military grade helicopter blade protection film...
Well I found Zagg to be the most rubbery. XtremeGuard was on the same line with Bestskinsever.
About the Military grade protection I feel those are just marketing gimmicks and not to be taken seriously.
Vikuiti (TM) DQC-160 is still costlier and only covers the front. So assuming this higher cost and coverage area it should be made of a different and higher quality material.
As far as the quality of material goes, Zagg/Bestskinsever/XtremeGuard use the same/similar type of material. But XtremeGuard was the cheapest I could find.
I'm notoriously brutal on my phone screens, and have ruined many of them over the years. The Gorilla glass on my HD2 (now a year old) has remained unprotected since day one, and it's still perfect. The surface is amazing.
Has anybody really scratch up their screen?

Sorry mate, but the HD2 doesn't have Gorilla glass. It's tough, but not Gorilla tough - and I know, cos I tried to scratch mine one night with a bottle cap when I was drunk. Thank god that didn't work!

Its my personal experience that having a screen guard on drastically reduces the chances of causing a screen breakage incase the phone falls down.
I use a matte screen guard just to reduce direct daylight glare. Since I use the Otterbox Defender and keep it screen side in, there's not much chance of keys or other things scratching even the guard.

Wow thats a relief
I've been using the Zagg protection for my HD for more than two years now.
It's very effective, as it truly turns your device into a rubber bouncing ball, so you'll really unlikely damage it if if falls down in most situations.
However, the screen part was very unpleasant to use, as your finger wouldn't slip anymore on the rubbery (and sticky) surface, and since the micro bubbles that always appear took several months to disappear from large surfaces such as the back battery cover, it compromised the scren readability for a too long time to be tolerated, so I prefered to use standard screen protection sheets (my current one is an anti-glare one).
Now for the drawbacks :
- Two years later, the glue turned yellow. It's obvioulsy not a problem on the black HD shell, but it could have been if you covered the screen as well.
- The sheets can theorically be removed, cleaned and replaced. It's true in the beginning. But two years later, the glue will stick to the HD and peel off from the film ! BTW, the film now rips easily, so it appears to have lost its initial sturdiness.
- I bought a Brodit craddle for my car, and it's very tight. So tight it ripped off the Zagg protection ! It may be thin, it's not thin enough...
So I finally removed it entirely. After all, I always put it in my belt leather case when I'm not using it and I barely use is as a basket ball - though it fell down quite a few times and I thanked the Zagg protection.
But my HD is ageing now and since I have problems with the screen, I think I'll change it for an HD2, so I won't replace the protection.
In conclusion :
- The Zagg protection is excellent, but consider replacing it after at least two years.
Well, I know it's actually more than the time some people keep their phones, but I keep mine for many years, so it's a concern for me.
- It will be a problem if you intend to use a slip-in car craddle, because of the added thickness.
The sheet is also very shock and scratch proof, but easily teared off if applied a strong pressure with a cutting edge, as for instance the hard ABS Brodit craddle edges.
- You'll quickly find it's not suitable to protect the screen.
Otherwise, if you intend to protect your Leo from scratches and shocks without wrapping it inside a huge box or ugly silicon case, while retaining its original appearance and design, and don't wish to have to get it out of the box/case each time you want to access the battery, SD card or SIM card, or plug into your car handsfree kit, then it's a perfect solution that no other can match.
Screen protectors are worthwhile on old resistive screens made of plastic, as plastic scratches very easily. They are a waste of money on glass screens, however, as it is extremely hard to scratch glass
Glass screens crack when extreme pressure/shock is exerted on the edges of the devices and compresses the glass. No screen protector is going to protect the glass from that. A shock absorbing silicon/rubber case, while not fool proof, offers the best protection from a shattered screen.
I've never had a screen protector an my old iPhone and my HD2, and there isn't a single scratch on the screen on either device. Everything else on my iPhone got scratched, but the screen is actually the most durable part:

Anti-glare screen filters can still be interesting if you're using your device outside under strong sunlight, as it's the case here where I live.
Otherwise, I agree the mineral glass is supposed to be scratch proof.
... But not break proof ! The Leo's glass screen has proved many times to be very, very thin compared to the iPhone's one... And very fragile when hit.
So beware if like me, you're carying your device everywhere on hard work. You can frequently hit your hip, so at least, don't store your Leo in your carrying case with the glass turned outside !!!
I prefer the otterbox defender
Which has a screen protector. For one thing, it will keep the glass from shattering should the device fall.
I do have a plastic protector under the otterbox, because the screen tends to stick to the otterbox otherwise. Some people have recommended a bit of baby powder on the screen, but I just can't bring myself to do that - and I wonder if they realize that such powder can be talc or cornstarch. I'm not sure I'd want either getting on my screen!
I just received the Full Body Screen Protector from Xtreme Guard today and I am a bit lost as to how to apply it since this is the 1st time I am trying to apply this type of protector.
In the instructions, it says to soak all fingers in soapy water solution --> can I use any type of washing hand liquid and mix it with water?
Then this is the part where I'm really lost : "Peel off the guard from its backing, then re-dip your fingers in the solution and completely wet the backing of the guard" --> Does that mean I must wet/dip the whole protector in the solution before applying?
Please bear with me, I'm completely noob for this type of thing. Any help would be really appreciated - thanks!!

First rule of thumb, go slow!
And not to hijack this thread or anything, but I always refer to the Phantom Skinz website when I install skins. I have used a few different products and Phantom Skinz was the best. Frack you, Ghost Armor!!! (Note, I have never used XtremeGuard but I am thinking about it because of the much cheaper price).
Back on topic, the Phantom Skinz website had some pretty in depth instructions and I did not just want to take credit for them, so:

And here is a video install because sometimes it is easier to watch someone do it first:

When I replaced my HD2 a couple of months ago I decided not to put a screen protector on the device, using the one built into the Defender instead.
Well, one of the second hand HD2s I bought went with a couple of original HTC screen protectors, so I put one of them on mine, in order to potect the screen from shocks, as the glass is very thin (much thinner than the iPhone's for instance).
You never know what can happen...
It may not be the best protection in the world : it's a bit thick, it makes the picture look a bit "weavy" when seen from tight angle (so I guess it's not perfectly flat), it can be scratched moderately easily, it's prone to collect fingerprints (as all the existing protections actually, and even the glass with no protection at all), the screen is still as difficult to read under strong sunlight (I think even a bit worse than with no protection at all), and it's slightly less finger-slippery than the glass screen alone, but...
... It has a gigantic advantage towards all and every other existing screen protectors (probably except the Zagg Invisible Shield, but this one is so rubbery and sticky it's almost unusable, actually) :
... It covers the whole screen, including around and under the buttons.
Most, if not all other protections, stop on top of the buttons, making a visible and ugly "stairs step". Plus they're not really better. Too bad.
So the HTC one is the one I prefer (the other best choice being no protection at all, since the glass can hardly be scratched, only broken).
BTW, I don't use a full casing protection nor sleeve, as I'm using a belt pouch and a very tightly fit Brodit car craddle that forbids any protection other than a screen film (it would just rip off the Zagg full body protection as it's too thick : I had the problem with the HD).
I feel obligated to make this post, I've had the nexus 4 for over a month now with the oem bumper case and front and back screen protectors (nothing fancy just your regular wet applicator screen protectors). Now I feel that most people who don't have an issue with the phone will not really post usually its the other way around... people who experience problems usually post and everyone tends to read them.
So after my experience over a month and various drops at bestbuy parking lot, work and driveway... I gotta say the phone holds up fine... No scratches other then some blemishes on the bumper plastic ring, even then the bumper did not chip it's color off which is good. The falls were planned and were random events from regular heights I am 5'11 so I am getting 4-4.5 feet drops.
I am really surprised how people are shattering the glass with phones simply in their pockets, attached are pictures of the damage to the bumper, mind you some drops are on streets with heavy gravel (work). That's my good deed done for today! thanks Google. :good:

You're using a bumper. Obviously its going to be less likely to shatter than having a n4 without one. The only times I've read about shattering is when people weren't using a case.
I have dropped my N4 twice with jsut a wet apply back screen protector. I have two small 'dents' for lack of a better term on the chrome trim ring and thats it.
First from was off my desk ~2.5ft onto hard wood. The second was as i pulled it out of my pocket and spun it to get it facing the right direction, as i spun it (hold the bottom with my thumb and index finger and rotating upwards 180*) it went flying out of my hand on the up swing, hit the car next to me, and hit the ground face first.
I just about pissed myself, stared at it for about 30 seconds and then was woken from my reverie by the (i found out shortly) owner of the vehicle i had 'thrown' my phone at saying "Well, you gonna get that?".
So i picked it up, and not a scratch. The woman said she was glad the phone wasnt broken and went about her business, and i went on my way.
Now i know that this glass is very strong... in certain cases. My S3 dropped about 3 feet, but had a small chip nicked out of the edge of the glass and the whole thing shatters. This is to the the way Gorilla glass is designed, it doesnt do well with vertex damage at all.
I will post some photos up of the N4 and S3 post drop when i am home
my room mate dropped his many times with no case. it's hit or miss on a shatter. my room mates barely has a blemish and it smashed tile from 4ft. he's clumsy and drops it all the time. we have insurance anyway but it has withstood his clumsyness pretty well. i on the other hand, have not dropped it once. pristine as a whistle.
Awesome.
Another glass thread.
Looking forward to this quality read.

Looks like xtremeguard. I thought the same. I bought both skinomi and xtremeguard. The skinomi arrived first so I installed it in front and xtremeguard in back. The skinomi cutout edges move when warmed and become misaligned but easy enough to reposition since they are so fine.
I have a nillkin installed, have dropped, tossed and tumbled my phone but less than 1-2 feet high. I also carry my phone in my pocket.

Let's just say there were 200 threads where people cried about dropping and breaking the glass. Even with that amount the percentage seems low compared to how many devices are out there. I should also add that the 200 number seems high.
Good to hear they will have Gorilla Glass 3 now!! Our next devices will be even better..
While on the glad topic I just really gotta say that this glad odds just so smooth and so great for a touchscreen. I was comparing the nex4 glass to the glad my HP touchpad and man what a difference. It feels harder and so much smoother. I think it is the coating makes it so smooth.
Actually I have hypothesis that the back glass is uncoated and this is one of the reasons out is weaker and less scratch resistant. I also think it had to do with the cuttings and the lack of anything behind it to help support it.
Sorry guys... Feeling loopy.. supposed to be finishing a large project and have been up for 2 days. Sucks..

Looking for advice on screen protector vs. no screen protector for my shiny new Moto X that just arrived. I can't seem to find one locally so I'll have to order something online if I need it (tried local AT&T, Best Buy, and Office Max because I was walking by it). I used to run a Ghost Armor protector on my old Galaxy Nexus but took it off for the last 4-5 months or so before I moved to a Lumia 1020. The GNex with Samsung's version of Gorilla Glass 2 had no scratches on it. So I figured I'd not run one on the Lumia which had GG 3 (same as the Moto X).
However my Lumia has two nice strips of rubbed in scratches across the top & bottom parts of the screen about 1/2 an inch in from the edge that I noticed after a few months and they have just gotten worse in the last year. I'm paranoid the same thing is going to happen to the Moto since it's also GG 3. The phone always goes in a pants pocket with a plastic eye drop bottle but never keys.
I live recklessly. No screen protector or case. I was in a position where someone was telling me to get one, but I like the feeling of the glass on the curving at the edges. A screen protector would disrupt the flow. I take really good care of my phones anyway. My HTC One M7 I had before for over a year didn't have anything and it only has one thin scratch from my girlfriend's diamond earrings. Which by the way, pro tip: warn people with diamond earrings to mind your phone if you let someone use it.
Personal preference, but I like the phone how it is. I don't buy a good looking phone to put a case on it.
I usually think that screen protectors, and cases are like insults to the designers who made this delightful piece of machinery... so no screen for me, and no cases, naked Moto X for me.. as always!
Do you guys put your phones in your pockets or? I thought I took good care of my phones until the glass on my Lumia.

There's always going to be those guys that don't use screen protectors, and the ones that do. I'm one that does. I've had my X exactly 1 week without a protector, but am expecting it in the mail tomorrow. No scratches at this point, and I prefer to keep it that way with a little more solid protection than just the type of glass it is. I always order Japanese pet film from amazon, much cheaper than in store, and is a hard material so screen still feels natural.

I usually don't use screen protectors or cases, but I have found that I am incredibly clumsy with this phone so far and have managed to dent the edges of the phone and scratch the screen a bit. So now I use a naked tough case and a cheap matte screen protector. I was a bit hesitant on the matte protector but thankfully I like it very much. I even like the papery feel to it.

No screen protector here. I switch between 3 phones daily and none of them have screen protectors. Aside from the fact that glass is pretty hard to scratch, I just like the feel of the bare glass and see no point in protecting a screen that you're never going to touch (if you use a protector). Just take care of it and you'll be fine. I do use cases on two of my phones, but the Moto X (which is my primary phone) stays naked 98% of the time.
All of my previous phones had a screen protector installed immediately, my Moto X hasn't had one since I got it.
I planned on getting one but the mall kiosk that used to be ghost armor, then another brand isn't there any longer. I cannot do them myself because of my OCD, I always ruin it somehow, believe me I have tried.
I have a very slim case on the X but I am tempted to not use that as well and go completely naked, would be the first time I have ever done that.
I'll always use a screen protector, even though I'm very careful with the devices. To me, since I already take very good care of the device - I'm extra picky on getting a screen protector that is very thin and clear. The device has curved glass towards the edges, so don't expect that to be covered unless you get one of those heat-application full coverage protectors.
This is the one I ended up going with... after 2 months or so, it's still fantastic. If you are familiar with the old Reallook protectors, this one's identical to that. Static application, plain and simple, thin with no orange peel.

Thanks for the tip. Those are cheap, I'll grab a pack of them to get by for now and give me some time to figure out if there are better ones. The whole tempered glass thing has me intrigued but a quick search showed they seem to want to hit those curved edges which causes them to not work well either.

Yeah I was really thinking about the tempered glass also, but I was worried about thickness and feel (as it wouldn't cover the edges either) - and eventually decided against it.
With today's technology, the phones don't need screen protector at all, but if you insist on running a screen protector, I'd suggest tempered screen protector as the ordinary ones are even not protective enough than the screen itself. One thing you should also consider is, running a tempered screen protector will make the touch reponse insensitive according to my personal experience.

Well, I thought I didn't need one on the phone I had before the Moto X, a Lumia 1020 that is also supposed to use Gorilla Glass 3. I think I mentioned already I have a Galaxy Nexus with Samsung's version of GG2 that had no screen protector for the last 4 months or so that I used it daily before getting the Lumia and it had no problems with scratches. The Lumia however in the same time started getting what you see in the attached picture. That picture is today after owning for a year and doing nothing differently than the Gnexus. The only other thing ever in the same pocket is a plastic eye drop bottle. In some ways it looks almost like a coating was rubbed off, but there are some good solid scratches in it as well that are not just some coating. So that's why I was paranoid about the Moto X.

I found a 3 pack of tempered glass screen protectors for $9 USD on Amazon (with free Prime shipping!) so I caved and ordered them. It was such an amazing deal that I figured if I didn't like them it wasn't a big loss (not like $30+ name brand ones anyway). I must say, I'm pretty impressed. My only complaint is that they don't cover all the glass, but they really can't because of the curved edges on the X. It was super easy to install, and I got it on PERFECTLY with zero imperfections like dust, etc. It doesn't affect screen sensitivity at all, and since it's glass it still feels great. I'm surprising myself here, but I definitely recommend them, especially for people like me that generally hate screen protectors. For $9 for 3 of them you really can't go wrong.

Can you post a pic of what it looks like? (or a link to the post if I missed it somewhere) I'm curious how "not covered" the screen is since the only place I noticeably see a curve is right at the edge where it meets the bezel.

Here ya go. I think the screen starts sloping a little bit before it hits the obviously rounded edges. I read reviews for a bunch of different glass screen protectors and they were all either a little too small like mine, or the right size but the edges don't stick right because of the sloped glass. I bought one from a different manufacturer for my iPhone 6 as well and it has the same issue. The screen protector I have for it is just as small as the one for the Moto X because it too has rounded edges. It was annoying at first (on both phones) but I've gotten used to it and it doesn't bother me any more. I'm still not sure if I'm going to keep using them though, as I still prefer a bare screen.

Ah ok. Thanks for the pic, that looks like the same coverage as the Mr. Shield PET protectors I just bought. So I think I could live with that. Yeah I'd rather go without anything, but after my experience with that Lumia and GG3 I'm just paranoid. I've never had any other phone do that, and I would expect a screen protector to look just as bad after a few months if not worse so that makes it really confusing to me that it happened.
For the past 2 years, the screen protector I have had on my previous phone (OnePlus One) was made by a successful Kickstarter company by the name of Evolutive Labs. The screen protector's main focus is protection and in my experience it has lived up to all the claims they make about it. I originally bought it for my OnePlus One because the phone was about as large of a phone as I would own, and as a result I didn't want to add any more size/bulk to it without leaving it unprotected. Below I have included a link to the videos of them pounding it with a hammer, my first impression review when I originally got it, and pictures of how my phone now. I have dropped my phone several times within the past two years and the phone's edges have racked up a beating; however the screen has never cracked and I have grown accustom to it being safe from drops.

(3) Wear and Tear to the phone over 2 years without a case, but the screen protector did it's job in protecting the screen from all the drops it sustained. This will give you an idea of the real world protection it provides.

Over the past two years, it has done its job very well at protecting my phone from all types of drops and such. It is made of a hard plastic so it does end up scratching over time. After about the first year, it had several scratches on it. These where from normal wear and tear, several drops, and me dragging it across a dirty bus floor (face down) with my foot after I dropped it under the seat. Fortunately, they do have a lifetime replacement program for the screen protectors and I was able to get it replaced for shipping cost in my situation a year ago. I asked Evolutive Labs about the scratching and they replied:
Most of our competitors' use tempered glass while we use plastic tpu. Plastic will not be able to reach 9h hardness; polymer is weaker against scratches but much stronger against impacts. The device itself receives much more protection from our screen protector (even if the screen protector itself scratches more easily) because plastic will never break. For tempered glass, once it's broken, the screen is no longer protected. For our screen protector, it is a simple ding.
We are working on improving this issue but it is quite challenging, however we are proud to say our screen protector is currently one of the most scratch resistant polymer protectors on the market.

I recently got a new phone, a Nexus 5X, and wanted to get a screen protector for it. I have been satisfied with the protection the RhinoShield offered so I got one. I also saw that Evolutive Labs have came out with a low profile bumper that can protect your phone from 11 ft drops. The Nexus 5X is a bit smaller and I was intrigued by it so I got that as well.
For basic information about how the Rhinoshield screen protector feels that isn't device specific, see my first review linked above (#2). All the information I said in that review is still correct about the quality of the product. The tl;dr version of that review is that it feels harder than most plastic protectors, has a great visibility/clearness, touch responsiveness doesn't suffer, it doesn't peal up if installed somewhat decently, and the cutouts/fit for the OnePlus One are great. Here are pictures of how it fits and looks on the Nexus 5X:
The Rhinoshield Crash Guard Case/Bumper: http://www.evolutivelabs.com/pages/crashguard
The bumper does not add very much bulk to the Nexus 5X, especially when you compare it to the protection it provides. It has a sizable lip on the front and back that will elivate the phone from the surface. They even made sure to make the lip a bit bigger on the top back to protect the camera lens. The cut outs for the USB C, audio jack, and mic are nice and sizable. They shouldn't be an issue for most people (pictures of them below). The bumper doesn't have a nice curvature like the normal back of the Nexus 5X has. Due to this, it may feel a bit more substantial in the hand, but retains the smaller profile of the Nexus 5X when in your pocket. This is a positive thing for me because it makes it a bit easier to handle. Pulling it out of a pocket can be easier by grabbing the edge of the phone. The bumper makes it a bit easier to grip the phone when using the finger print sensor as well. The power/volume buttons are a bit mushy. They are a little harder to push and don't provide a nice click. They by no means make it 'hard' to push the buttons. I do have to use a notable more effort to click them though. This normally would have been a bigger issue, however the finger print sensor is how I turn my phone on 99% of the time. I just take the phone out of my pocket and rest my finger on the sensor on the back and it turns on. I really only use the power button when turning off the Nexus 5X.
Pictures of the case/bumper:
UPDATE:
I got a reply from Evolutive Labs about the buttons being a bit hard to press. I have included that below. After I got the reply from them, I took off the case and pushed in the buttons a whole bunch with the purpose of stretching/wearing in the rubber. I can feel a little bit of a click and it is much easier to use the buttons now.
We are going to be honest here. Some of our customer's feel that we made the buttons too stiff and have voiced their concern about having to use more force. Nexus 6p and 5x were designed with much more sensitive buttons and sometimes feels a bit loose, so we had designed our bumper with this in mind. If your issue is afraid that you want a clear and defined buttons, then our cases is a good solution.
If you are however afraid that a light tap will not register the buttons then we are unfortunately have yet to solve this issue, but judging from my own personal experience, a week of usage with the bumper, you will find the buttons to be less stiff

Just got mine in the mail today. Initial impression: love it. I own about a dozen various others including the official Google ones. This feels like it could take quite a beating and keep on ticking. It looks great with my dbrand skin as well.
Cons: 2/3 of my headphones don't fit the jack. Easy fix with a drill bit though. It also makes the phone feel substantially wider which surprisingly doesn't bother me that much. The buttons are tough to press and don't "click" as mentioned above but I'm sure it will break in.
I highly recommend.

I actually got a reply from Evolutive Labs about the buttons and I've included that in the OP now.
When I first got the case, the buttons where a bit hard to push. After I got the reply from them, I took off the case and pushed in the button parts of the case a whole bunch to stretch out the rubber a bit. Now I can feel a noticeable click from the power button. They definitely ware in.
I can agree with you that it does make it seem a bit wider. It doesn't bother be at all either. I believe this is because it doesn't actually add any bulk to the back so it is still very thin in my hand and pocket.
Awesome! I'll give it a try. Thanks for the response
Don't.
I got mine few days ago, and I got so disappointed I just shipped it back and asked for refund.
This bumper is total crap.
My Nexus 4 was guarded by Google's original bumper for 3 years! and I LOVED it. It was perfect!
Then I bought Galaxy S6 which was guarded by Spigen Neo Hybrid EX - and it was PERFECT. True bumper!
Then I traded my S6 for Nexus 5X cause I just love AOSP and ofc the very first thing I did is to order a bumper.
Sadly there arent many options out there. So I ordered this one.
It is only 1 layer - not 2 like the Neo Hybrid EX or the Google's one - it just a piece of cheap plastic that makes your side buttons IMPOSSIBLE to press - and they charge 25$ for it. Just sad.
A: Read the description and look at the pictures. Nowhere does it say it is dual layer.
B: If you give it time and work the buttons like Rennat said the buttons
click fine (i agree this is an oversight on their part)
C: I am still envious of the official bumper from the Nexus 4... It was an awesome product. But i still maintain this is the best bumper for the 5x for the time being

I didnt say he said it's a dual layer. I wanted to emphasize that.
And I dont agree with the "should give it some time" - a product should work fine right away, and not after "some time". Especially with this tag price.
I initially felt the same way about the buttons, they are VERY hard to push. This makes taking a screen shot very difficult. However, it is beautiful on the phone. It shows the full back, and if you use a tempered glass screen protector, it is the perfect combination. the buttons (rubber) loosen up over time. You will appreciate it.
Love mine. The buttons are now broken in sufficiently so that I can launch the camera app with the double tap.

I took some pictures with my work iPhone (so they might not be the best quality).
Impressions: shipping was pretty quick coming from California. It was packaged well and survived the trip. The packaging seems to be well thought out such that it will protect the glass during shipping.
It came with an alcohol swab to clean your screen, a microfiber cloth for final wipe and they tossed in a couple of stickers to use to grab the errant dust particle if any fan on the screen just before placing the protector.
The back of the protector has a large removable "sticker" and appears to only have adhesive on the top and bottom (although it could have adhesive on the sides, I'm unable to tell for certain).
I ordered the gold one and took a couple pictures of my phone beside the TGSP for comparison (to compare the color side by side). The protector appears to be slightly more yellow and the phone is slightly more silver than the protector (if that makes sense). For me, it's a very close match so I'm considering it a very acceptable match.
I did a dry placement to verify the cutouts before sticking it in place. The holes were precise in their position, although at the top there's an additional hole to the left of where the light sensor and LED are. My phone doesn't have anything behind that hole. The camera cutout seems to be centered well with the other cutouts centered as well.
I cleaned the screen following the instructions and carefully put it in place and massaged the whole glass to ensure a good fit.
In the following pic, you can see in the reflection the bit of "sheen" or something that is slightly "off" when looking at the clarity. Polishing the front did nothing to resolve this.
The adhesive seems to be sufficient to hold it well. On the sides, the protector seems to be cut short ever so slightly. Possibly to leave room for a case to attach. It's so slight that I'd barely notice if I wasn't scrutinizing the fit and finish.
The curve seems to be right on the money. My screen seems to have lost a tad bit of sensitivity while typing near the edge (curve) but the edge responsiveness doesn't seem lacking.
I also have the OEM Samsung leather case and took some closeup pics of the combination.
I was cautious when installing the case after the glass. The case doesn't cause the glass to lift (yet) and seems to hide the edge of the protector very well.
The raised lip at the top of the case and slightly raised lower corners do not seem to be large enough to keep the glass off of a table if placed face down. I noticed my home button stuck out enough to almost touch a table with this case on. After installing the glass, the home button is slightly recessed lower than the protector and as such will not be scratch free if placed face down.
Overall I'm very pleased with the fit and finish and how well it works with the OEM Samsung leather case. I'll reserve another post for future updates after I've used it for a few weeks.

Update 4/22:
My screen protector is lifting at the top left side due to poor adhesion. I've asked for a refund.
It still has better fit than the other options we currently have, but I'm taking it off and waiting for a Zagg.

Thanks for the review. I never had a glass screen protector and wanted one but have mixed feelings. There seems to be compromises to be made (less responsiveness, might come off, "sheen", looks since I prefer just a clear one so I can see my gold s7 edge true color). I am really tempted to go naked on it but I been reading that some people have scratches on their screens When no protection. I would still probably go with this tho.
Thanks
So no more front lip on the Samsung leather case after TGSP? That sucks. I ordered the case today anyways, LOL
The only thin & clear case I have that still offers a front lip & doesn't affect the TGSP at all is the Tauri clear case.
Sent from my SM-G935P using Tapatalk
Yeah it kinda sucks (the lip ordeal).. I can feel it's raised up a bit but mostly because the glass turns down a bit. The protector rolls up a bit before it makes the "edge" turn and I think this is where it would touch.
It's an ever so slight touch when face down, but I think it does touch in places.
If the phone got dropped face down with this case and protector, the protector would break most likely.

Just fitted a black GPEL screen protector to my S7 edge.
The fit is fantastic. It's also really easy to fit.
My only criticism is that there's a slight "haze" to the inside of the screen protector that gives a slight sparkling effect with a light screen.
Fitted my black one yesterday. Not a fan..
Mine does not look black but blue?
Also the responsiveness is not that good. I can hardly press a or q on a nordic keyboard. I really have to press down hard to get those letters.
My Gpel glass came with a few dents in it.. Maybe this is why the responsiveness is so bad. I have emailed gpel about this.
The glass is not clear but sparkly.. I don't like that at all.. I feel like I am giving up too much quality of this awesome screen just to protect it.
I will try again if I get a replacement, but for now it is back to a Ultimate Shield screen protector for me.

I noticed the effect as well. I'm a window tinter by trade so glass is my Forte and I noticed the haze right away.
In the OP there's a picture of the bottom the screen with a reflection of my ceiling fan lights where I mentioned this effect. It's very evident in that picture.
I don't notice it much while using the phone though so YMMV

That said it appears to be the best available screen protector out for the S7 edge.

I read all the threads and reviews and chose this one for that reason.
Maybe Zagg or someone else will release one that's even better, but until then, this one fits the bill as long as it doesn't lift or anything in a few weeks.

I have been lurking here looking for a good glass sp, and since you mentioned sheen a few times in this thread and the other, and since noone seems to be telling you why, i thought i'd log in to my old acc and enlighten you.
This "sheen" problem usually occurs in cheap screen glass screen protectors in days of old. When glass screen protectors were still a novelty. When people were still experimenting with how glass SPs should stick on your phone. This problem occurs when the whole glass does not touch the screen. By putting a layer of glue, even less than a milimeter, on the top and bottom part of the screen, the rest of the glass is essentially hovering over your phone's screen.
When it does touch it, glass on glass, u get that swirl problem. that oilly problem. And it will only get worse as time goes by as the glass that sticks together tends to stay together, due to friction, and then the rest of the glass sp starts to bend

It seems to be on the exterior as well. I also noticed it before I put the sp on the phone.
I'll agree that is inherent in this glass protector, and it really sucks but I'll live with it for now until something better comes along.
The rest of the fit and finish is outstanding imo.

I usually use a screen protector with every phone I've had but with the s7e it's just too hard to find something decent that doesn't affect the quality of the display "one of main reasons I went with s7e is for the gorgeous display, so instead of endless search and money for screen protector I just bought insurance instead
Anyone try this?

@daddymikey1975 I know it's been only 2 days but how's it going between the TGPS & the leather case? Any lifting issues?
