3. I updated the phone with the zip file
Now I'm getting an exclamation screen when I try to get into recovery scree (Pressing Home button during boot)
I tried to downgraded using RC29 Image: http://android-roms.googlecode.com/files/DREAIMG-RC29.zip - Followed first 6 steps from http://forums.tmonews.com/index.php?topic=8970.0
I'm not able to update or do anything with the phone now.

I haven't fixed it yet. Am not able to place the recovery image using fastboot - my phone is not recognized by the computer
Work around I've found for flashing the recovery image if you can't figure out fastboot (I've never got it to work) is like this:
1. Follow the root procedure.
2. Install the most recent CM rom without using the HTC image (reason I do this is he's got some linux commands built into his ROM that aren't installed in the vanilla android build).
3. Download the cm-recovery-1.4.img to your sd card (or whichever recovery image you like)
4. Run terminal commands like so:
$su root (the reason I do this is it gives you higher level access to the system than just su, and I've found it doesn't work with just su for some reason)
#flash recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.4.img
#reboot
5. Hold your home key as it powers up, and you should have the new recovery image installed.
Of course, I'd say do a full wipe, then install the ROM, and go through the fix permissions and clear cache.

You won't be able to use terminal from recovery until you have a thirdparty recovery image installed. The steps I've listed are for a working phone, and I'm sure that's where part of your problem is. I'd suggest doing a wipe (Alt+W) and going through the root process again. When you get the CM Rom, change the name of it to update.zip, then try the steps I mentioned. I'd suggest having a separate SD card with just DREAMIMG.nbh installed on it for emergencies (especially if you're going to partition your main card).
Thanks
2) Install the most recent CM rom without using the HTC image(What is it? Can explane?)
4) Terminal as i understand its Telnet?
Can i do works a boot mode and then downgrade it to RC29?? Because after it i'll know what to do... Thanks!

Basically to get this working you're going to need to downgrade to RC29 first - so follow the root instructions.
CM = CyanogenMod ROM. To get his working fully you need two roms, which are the HTC Developer ROM and the 4.x ROMs he created (reason being legal distribution of software), but for my instructions, on his ROM page, you're going to skip his instructions, just download his ROM, rename it to update.zip and just flash it from the stock recovery, just so you can get to the terminal once the phone boots up and load terminal (it's in the programs tray). When another screen pops up asking if you want to allow it to use SU functions (it will as soon as you type "su") hit allow.
Terminal is a program downloadable from the Market, it's included with the CM ROM.
His instructions for install are not going to work unless you have a thirdparty recovery image, which at this point from the description, the triangle with the exclamation point is the default system recovery image.
CM Rom page
You should be able to find the Root posts and choose a customed recovery image, there's about 4 or 5 really good ones, I use Cyanogen's, thus my instructions on how to flash it.
You're fortunate that you're getting to the stock recovery, means your phone isn't bricked.

Not sure what you mean? Telnet for these intents and purposes is basically just a command. The page on how to root has become pretty convoluted at this point. The part where it tells you to type 'telnetd' is just running a script which is an exploit in the old releases of android. You won't be messing with Terminal really until you get to the point where you've updated the rom. From this point, I'd suggest downloading this root.apk from your browser, install it, allow it, follow the instructions step by step in the program.
My problem consist of that i can't turn on my phone and i can't get into bootloader...only recovery can you give me a link for RC29 download and then install it from recovery on my g1 from recovery.
Thanks!

You don't...with the DREAMIMG.nbh or any .nbh file you start up the phone holding power+camera. The recovery mode looks for an update.img file. You'll make it through, don't get frustrated.
Here's a more updated rooting guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=553416
This thread covers things already covered before. This is not a mindless repeat but an attempt to collect information contained in previous guides into one step by step guide to help people having difficulty finding all the information they need to do each of the things listed in the title. If there is missing or incorrect information please let me know and I will update.
Root, nand unlock, radio update, Froyo Rom install (Two Froyo sections. One is if you want to use Cyanogen and one is if you want to use another Froyo rom)... all in one.
Section 1: "Rooting the phone"
Section 2: "Nand unlocking"
Section 3: "Updating your radio"
Section 4A: "Installing Cyanogen Rom"
Section 4B: "Installing other Froyo Rom"
Section 5: "Installing Amon_RA Recovery" (Alternative to Clockwork, optional section for those wishing to give it a try)
Section 6: "Restore to stock rom and radio and turning S-ON" (Good for an RMA)
Section 7: "Installing custom themes" (Just a placeholder currently for an upcoming update)
Section 8: "Installing custom splash screen"
Section 9: "Installing Ubuntu on your Incredible" (Just a placeholder currently for an upcoming update)
This guide is meant to be a quick guide with all of the information to root your phone, nand unlock it, radio update it and put a Froyo rom on it, all in one easy place. For those of you who have done all of this you know how hard it can be to find all of this information.
I claim absolutly no credit for any of this. If you wana give credit, give it to the people who did all of the work, not me. The only thing I accept credit for, and trust me, this is a VERY tiny contribution to the hard work that all of these devs have done, is to put it all in one place.
Disclaimer: I am not a dev. I can not help you with your unique problem, consult the real devs, the ones who made the guides to which I will link. Following this guide or any of the ones I am referencing to can be dangerous and can cause you to end up with a bricked phone (Bricked: Dead, gone, finished, useless, trash, worthless, $400 paper weight, a phone with one app: "Black screen") Notice: Bricking ones phone can cause unwanted side effects such as the desire to scream uncontrollably or the desire to chock the nearest person, continue at your own risk. While following these guides carefully can greatly reduce the risk of a bricked phone, the risk is still inherent and one does continue at their own risk and can not hold this poster or any of the poster of the guides referenced responsibile for any damages caused to the phone, OS or anything related thereto. (I'm not a lawyer, so sorry if that doesn't cover every loophole, point is, don't blame us)
**** MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR PHONE PLUGGED IN FOR ALL OF THIS!!! YOU DON'T WANT YOUR PHONE DYING AT ANY POINT IN THIS GUIDE****
First let's download all of the files we will be needing.
Go here: http://unrevoked.com/#inc
Download both Unrevoked3 and Unrevoked Forever.
Go here: http://adrynalyne.stfuthxbye.net/radio/2.15.00.07.28/PB31IMG.zip
Download this file, it is the 2.15 radio update (DO NOT PUT IT ON THE SDCARD YET)
Now that we have the files, let's get started.
Section 1 "Rooting the phone"
Step 1: Power on your phone.
Step 2: Go to settings.
Step 3: Go to Applications.
Step 4: Go to Development.
Step 5: Select USB debugging.
Step 6: Connect your phone to your computer.
Step 7: Run the Unrevoked3 file that you downloaded.
Additional Step: If you get stuck here with this message on Unrevoked3, "Waiting for bootloader; Make sure driver is installed!" then go to this webpage and follow the instructions there.
Step 8: After it finishes you will be in what is called recovery. It is a black screen with green text options. Reboot should be selected already, press the optical trackball to reboot your phone.
Step 9: Once your phone has rebooted pull down the notification bar and turn on the disk drive part of the USB connection so you can access the files on your sdcard.
Step 10: Save all of the contents of your sdcard to a folder on your computer.
Step 11: Go to My Computer (I am assuming you using Windows because if you were using Linux you probably would have figured all of this stuff out for yourself, however if you are using linux like me, you know how to adapt these parts of the guide to fit your Linux) and find your sdcard (make sure it's your sdcard and not the internal storage of your phone)
Step 12: Format the sdcard to fat32.
Step 13: Place your files back on the sdcard.
Step 14: Place the unrevoked forever zipped file on the sdcard (in the bottom directory, in other words, not in any folders)
Step 15: Go to the market application on your phone and find and install "Rom Manager" by ClockworkMod.
Step 16: Pull down the notification bar and turn off disk drive. (Select charge only)
Step 17: Open "Rom Manager" (it will ask for root permission, grant it)
Step 18: Select "Backup Current ROM" (This is a nandroid backup and will save you countless hours trying to get your phone back to operable status should you mess something up, it will however do nothing to help you if you brick your phone, that's different.)
Once it is done with the backup it will reboot the phone. Congrats, you now have a rooted phone and a backup created!
Section 2 "Nand unlocking"
("But I already rooted my phone, what is this?" Ummm... well it's hard to explain but basically it's a FULL rooting, in laymans terms, one that will allow you to flash stuff that hasn't been signed, like a radio update. I may be a little bit off on the description but I will update it if someone wants to explain it a little better than that)
If you run into a problem in this section or section 4A or 4B with the recovery saying it is unable to find /cach/update.zip go into Rom Manager and at the bottom there is an option to install old recoveries, install an older recovery like 2.5.0.1 and attempt the section again.
Step 1: Go into "Rom Manager" app.
Step 2: Select "Reboot into Recovery"
Step 3: The green text menu will appear upon reboot. Select "install zip from sdcard" (Note: You can use your optical trackball to move around the menu, then press it to make a selection.)
Step 4: Locate the unrevoked forever zip you placed on the sdcard earlier and install it.
Step 5: Once the install is done press the power button to move back once in the recovery menu.
Step 6: Reboot your phone.
Congrats, you now have a FULLY rooted phone. Be sure to thank the Unrevoked team for their hard work! Thanks guys!!! We love you!!
Section 3 "Updating your radio"
NOTICE: This section is by far the most dangerous sections of all of this stuff. For this reason I will give a warning about what NOT to do before I even tell you what to do. During this process we will be updating the radio. When we go to update the radio it will ask you if you wish to update using the file it has found. You will answer yes and allow it to do the update. Should you mess up at any point and be asked again to do the update, DO NOT DO IT!!! If you update your radio twice with this file, you WILL brick your phone. Once again, DO NOT update the radio twice with this file.
Note: This section can only be done if you have done the previous section, Nand unlock. Also there has been a bit of confusion when trying to update the radio, please ensure that you follow the steps carefully as some people are attempting to update their radio from recovery. Updating your radio is done from HBOOT, not recovery.
Step 1: Locate the "PB31IMG.zip" file you downloaded earlier.
Step 2: Place it on the sdcard (in the bottom directory)
Step 3: Power off your phone.
Step 4: Hold the volume down button and then press and hold the power on button at the same time. This will boot you into a screen that says something about HBOOT.
Step 5: At this point it will scan for a file and find the "PB31IMG.zip" file on your sdcard and ask if you wish to update with it. Select yes.
Step 6: You should see a bar on the right that shows you the loading progress. Once it is done, press the power button and the menu options should change.
Step 7: You should now have an option to reboot your phone, press the volume down button and then the power on button to select it.
Step 8: Once your phone is booted go to settings.
Step 9: Select "About Phone" (At the bottom)
Step 10: Select "Software Information"
Step 11: Ensure that in the "Baseband version" section it says "2.15.XX.XX.XX" (No, not really X's, just any numbers there will do)
Step 12: Install a file manager on your phone. Astro File manager will do.
Step 13: Locate the "PB31IMG.zip" file on your sdcard and delete it. (You want to remove it off of your sdcard so you don't make a mistake and update your radio again, bricking your phone)
Congrats, you now have an updated radio!! (Hopefully a phone that isn't bricked either cause you were sure to follow my warning)
There are two Section 4's. Section 4A is for people wishing to install the Cyanogen Rom. Section 4B is for people wishing to install another Froyo 2.2 Rom of their choice. Do not do both sections, I have added the other section so that people have a choice as not everyone wants to use Cyanogen.
Section 4A "Installing Cyanogen Rom"
Step 1: Open "Rom Manager" app.
Step 2: Select "Download ROM"
Step 3: Select "CyanogenMod"
Step 4: Select "CyanogenMod 6.0.0-RC3" (If the numbers are greater than that, that is fine, just means there has been a Cyanogen update)
Step 5: Select Download (If it gives you the option, download google apps too)
Step 6: It should ask if you want to wipe with this install, select yes, it will also ask if you want to do a backup, I recommend you do.
Step 7: Once it is done with the update it should reboot and you are finished.
Section 4B "Installing other Froyo Roms"
Step 1: Find and download the froyo rom of your choice. (Jager and Skyraider are a couple choices but there are others, happy hunting)
Step 2: Place the rom on your sdcard (in the bottom directory)
Step 3: Open "Rom Manager"
Step 4: Select "Reboot into Recovery"
Step 5: Once in recovery select "install zip from sdcard"
Step 6: Locate the rom you placed on your sdcard and install it.
Step 7: Once the update is finished select "wipe data/factory reset"
Step 8: Confirm the wipe. (This will keep you from getting stuck in a boot loop)
Step 9: Reboot your phone.
Note: If you did not wipe your phone after installing a new rom and are stuck in a boot loop, pull your battery out, replace it and hold the volume down button and the power button at the same time. This will place you in HBOOT. Once it has checked your SD card for any signed updates use the volume down button and select the "RECOVERY" option by pressing the power button. This will reboot your phone into recovery where you can preform the "wipe data/factory reset" to get you out of the boot loop.
Congrats, you have a rooted phone with the nand unlocked, the radio updated and a VERY sweet cooked rom on your phone. Your phone should be speedier than ever. Enjoy and be sure to thank the rom developers for their hard work!!
Section 5 "Installing Amon_RA Recovery"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=758874
Step 1: Go to the thread linked above.
Step 2: Find the latest version of Amon_RA recovery and download the file ending in ".img" (labeled recovery reflasher)
Step 3: Plug your phone into your computer.
Step 4: Go to settings.
Step 5: Go to Applications.
Step 6: Go to Development and disable USB Debugging.
Step 7: Start running Unrevoked3.
Step 8: Select the menu option "File" in Unrevoked3.
Step 9: Select Custom Recovery.
Step 10: Locate the Amon_RA recovery ".img" file that you downloaded and select it.
Step 11: Turn USB Debugging back on. Your phone will now go through the process of installing Amon_RA Recovery. Leave it alone till it is sitting in recovery.
There are some nice features in Amon_RA, take a look around if you want. The nandroid backup and restore is quite elaborate. Enjoy.
Section 6 "Restoring to stock rom and radio"
The following section is for anyone looking to restore their phones to stock rom 2.1 and radio 1.0. Do not follow this section unless you are wanting to revert back to stock radio and rom.
Step 1: Download this file: http://www.mediafire.com/?n3bmd2bkz55k1b9
Step 2: Connect your phone to your computer.
Step 3: Save all the files on your sdcard to a folder on your computer.
Step 4: Format your sdcard to fat32.
Step 5: Place the "PB31IMG.zip" file that you downloaded onto the sdcard in the bottom directory.
Step 6: Power down the phone.
Step 7: Hold the volume button down while pressing the power on button. (This will place you in HBOOT)
Step 8: HBOOT will find the file on the sdcard named "PB31IMG.zip" and ask if you wish to update with it. Answer yes. (It will start to load and restart HBOOT and scan for the file again, don't panic, let it do it's thing.)
Step 9: When it is finished it will ask you to reboot the device, press volume up to reboot.
Step 10: Remove "PB31IMG.zip" from the sdcard.
You should now have a stock rom and radio, good if you are wanting to do an update to the OTA 2.2.
Section 7: "Installing custom themes" (Just a placeholder currently for an upcoming update)
Future update!!
Section 8: "Installing custom splash screen" (Just a placeholder currently for an upcoming update)
This can only be done once you have unlocked the nand, done S-OFF in other words.
Step 1: Go here and find the custom splash you want. (Or if you have one from somewhere else you want to use just follow the rest of the directions)
Step 2: Make sure the file is named PB31IMG.zip.
Step 3: Place the custom splash on the sdcard bottom directory.
Step 4: Shut down the phone.
Step 5: Boot into HBOOT by holding down the volume down button and the power key at the same time.
Step 6: When it asks you if you wish to update answer yes by pressing the volume up key.
Step 7: When it is finished press the volume up key to reboot.
Step 8: Remove the PB31IMG.zip file from the sdcard.
Congrats on your custom splash and bootscreen.
Section 9: "Installing Ubuntu on your Incredible" (Just a placeholder currently for an upcoming update)
Future update!!

Nicely done. This should answer a lot of questions. Perhaps this should be a sticky?
Perhaps but we will leave that up to the mods and the members. If the members find it useful enough then I am sure they will get it stickied

Your guide has already cause one user to have problems.
You say "find PB31IMG.zip in this thread." The only PB31IMG.zip in that thread is the stock RUU back to 1.00.03.04.06, not the 2.15 radio. You should probably upload the 2.15 radio yourself and link to it.

Question. I'm not going to install Forever, but I've been rooted for a long time. However, I am still running the 1.00 radio. Can I just use the 2.15 radio PB31IMG.zip file over the 1.00 radio? If not, then will installing this PB31IMG.zip file factory restore my phone or just update the radio? I thought with the 1.00->2.05 radio, it would make you factory restore your phone, not sure if that was the case with 1.00->2.15

You can not do a radio update from 1.00 to 2.15 without either doing a factory reset of sorts with that OTA file or doing the unrevoked forever.

There doesn't exist a signed RUU with the 2.15 radio, so in order to get the 2.15 radio, you HAVE to use unrevoked forever. The closest you can get is 2.05 radio

In the very first steps, I have already got an error, "Waiting for bootloader; Make sure driver is installed!" Which driver? This is my first time roting, everyone says how easy it is but every direction I see is distinctly different and though I feel I can usually hold my own in the tech world, I am lost. Got it! Went to the webpage "hboot driver" in the unrEVOked package and followed those directions, it worked. I'm on my way. formatting card now (forever...) then reload and moving on! The big problem this morning is that I wont be able to do ANYTHING else until the servers come back up. Whats up with that anyway?? Cant do anything without that!
(And yes, Windows) Thanks for your help
By servers you mean the android market? You can still do a search for Rom Manager and install it.

No, everything seems to be down this morning. Cant search anything, no webpages work. Seems many others are experiencing this too.
So like locally you mean? That sucks.

I added in an additional step for the problem you were having in case others come up against the same problem. Thank you for informing me on what you did to fix the problem.
I just modified the guide. I changed section 4 to two different sections. Section 4A is for those wishing to update to Cyanogen 6.0.0-RC3 rom. Section 4B is for anyone who does not wish to use Cyanogen and wants to try another Froyo rom.
I wanted to make the guide more universal as I created the guide to be a kinda catch all and felt that limiting the instruction to one rom was biased. Even though I have tried other roms and prefer Cyanogen's rom, I wanted to leave that choice up to the users.
Simple question. I messed up my phone and want to return to the original.
I am a Canadian BELL i9000m - JL2 is what I need.
I know more-or-less how to flash etc. my question is this:
I am on the super optimized kernal, and seeARMS 2.2 JL2 rom.
all I have to do is get the original stock firmware released by bell/samsung for i9000m (JL2) and put it into Odin (and then once in download mode) it should work ?
my question is what boxes do I tick
like how do I get my stock kernal back - I need to get the modem, kernla, rom, etc. back to stock - which boxes in odin do I check ?
Disable any lag fixes you may have on the fone and download JL2 from samfirmware, unzip the file then pop it in the pda field in Odin, don't tick any boxes. Put your fone in to download mode - connect to pc then click start. This will flash JL2 on to your fone.

thanks alot man. and this will remove the other kernal too i suppose ?
anything else I have to disable? I put a few other fixes on there I think.
The flash will restore the fone back to stock and remove all your previous data including kernal. Do a factory data reset after the flash

Thanks man -
I assume from there i can try and do it again and hopefully I won't mess up ?
I wonder if you can help me out so I don't break my phone again. Here are the instructions:
To install this ROM:
1. Download and extract the file you downloaded above to the root of your internal SD card (both the "seearms" folder and the .ZIP ROM file).
If you would like to customize your install, continue doing step 2. If you would like a stock install with all the applications + SpeedMod kernel + JL2 modem + Generation X theme, skip to step 3 (however I'd recommend customizing your install. )
2a. Browse to the "seearms/kernel" folder on your SD card and delete whichever kernel you do not want to install.
2b. Do the same with the "seearms/modem" folder: delete whichever one you don't want to install (I'd recommend installing the JL2 modem unless you've specifically had problems with it).
2c. Do the same with the "seearms/applications" folder: delete whichever applications you do not use. You're allowed to delete all of them to create a slim install, or delete none to create a stock install.
2d. Browse to the "seearms/extra" folder on your SD card, and delete whichever extras you do not wish to install (You're able to choose the Generation X theme, blue Android Market, custom boot animations, etc). Most importantly, if you would like the ROM to wipe your data, leave "wipe" untouched. If you don't want it to format your data, delete "wipe".
2e. So, before going further, you should have the following folder structure on your SD card:
"seeARMS.UGJL2.v0.4.zip" - anywhere on your SD card, doesn't matter
"seearms/extra" - customized to your liking
"seearms/applications" - customized to your liking
And a single file in both of these folders, depending on the kernel and modem you wish to install:
"seearms/kernel"
"seearms/modem"
3. Boot into recovery, and select "Install zip from sdcard".
4. Select "Choose zip from sdcard", and scroll to the ROM.
5. Select OK, and wait for the file to flash.
6. Reboot. This reboot will take a while (upwards of 2-5 minutes), so be patient and don't shut off your phone!
Congratulations, you've successfully flashed!
--------------------------------
Basically I get stuck at option 2 to 3
I didn't opt for the "custom" install (2a-2e) so I just went with the normal install and skipped to step 3
some guy said that I needed to delete certain things from the folder to customize the install -- but I didn't see that in the instructions - I just basically downloaded the seeARMS rom.zip and put it in my SD card and installed it from CWM that way -- was this wrong ?
Bin that ****e mate
1. Remove any lag fixes
2. Download the file
3. Unzip it
4. Open Odin
5. Put the unzipped file (now a .tar file) in the PDA box of Odin
6. Put fone in to download mode
7. connect to pc and odin will pick the fone up and the coms box will turn yellow
8. click start and let it do its thing.
The reboot will take about 10 minutes after the flash.
Add:
0) Charge your battery @ 100%.
0') restart your computer, dont start anything in background, open odin only, check and kill all Kies process.
0'') Make some coffee, chill a bit and you good to go.

thanks guys - I understand fully how to get my phone back to stock 2.2 now.
But I still want to re-flash seeARMS rom again -- the question is how to do it without messing up my phone again. As stated, I posted the instructions above, I get stuck at step 2 - not sure how to go about it to be honest
You need to root your fone then flash the custom rom via Clockwork recovery. The instructions above look ****e mate. With the custom rom you put the .zip file on the root of the internal sd card then reboot in recovery then toggle down to install zip file then choose zip file. You must have clockwork recoverymod working first which you can download from the market

I did this - and the ROM didn't come out and work as good (the home button didn't work) the reason I was told was because I didn't "customize" the installation --- apparently I didn't read the instructions correctly -- which is why I posted the instructions and was hoping someone could explain it to me where I was wrong

here they are :
NOTE: If you have a Bell i9000M, do the following to (hopefully) prevent your internal SD card from dying:
1. Upgrade to JL2 using either Kies (recommended) or Odin (make sure to check Bootloader Update).
2. After the upgrade, download and flash Super Optimized Kernel, which will give you access to ClockworkMod Recovery. Instructions to do so can be found in the FAQs (Q1).
(More information regarding the internal SD card dying can be found in Q2 in the FAQ)
To install this ROM:
1. Download and extract the file you downloaded above to the root of your internal SD card (both the "seearms" folder and the .ZIP ROM file).

"seearms/kernel"

===============================================
It's in between step 1 and 3 that I get confused - the customization - it says if you want a stock installation just do you what you told me, select from CWM and install from zip card - but I did that and it didn't work
seeARMS said something about a "wipe" version and that I should do that and I should be fine - i don't understand this "wipe" version I wasn't prompted with a choice for this when I did it
I think your best to ask for help in the actual topic/ thread where you downloaded the rom from in the first place.
I have a similar issue, as I stated on the thread I've opened a few minutes ago...

The best way to revive your I9000m is to first flash JPC (a three file ROM) with 512 PIT and repartition ticked. The phone will still be in a boot loop. Then flash the JL2 PDA without repartition or PIT. The best way to go back to stock! Has always worked for me. I9000m's are not the same as other I9000's and do not flash repartition and the PDA in the same flash! Good luck!

[guide] clockworkmod on eMMC + fix for recovery pwr+menu boot + stuck at " " screen
I'm making this thread because I was asked to, and it should cut down on types of 'need help' threads. I did not develope any of these methods, credit goes to their respective owners. I'm just reposting one of my posts from the official CWM 3.0.1.0 thread in the development forum. Also with a title like this, even the dumbest search terms will probably find it.
OK, Here's a guide that will aid you in
1: installing clockworkmod 3.0.1.0 for the installation of CM7 and Honeycomb v4 2nd edition onto the eMMC.
2: Repair CWM if pwr+menu does not work, or you cannot boot into recovery on the eMMC because of a bad install or you tried installing CWM via Rom-manager.
3: If section 2 did not cure what ails you then try number 3. This will also fix many "I'm stuck at 'n' screen, or I'm stuck at 'touch the future of reading' screen"
1: If you do not have any version of CWM on your eMMC. Meaning you never EVER installed it ever.
Step 1: create a bootable CWM SD-card. It doesn't matter what version of CWM. You can use the images from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922870
Step 2: Download the Flashable .zip of CWM 3.0.1.0 from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=971197
Step 3: Copy said .zip file onto the root dir. of your bootable CWM SD-card
Step 4: Boot to SD-card
Step 5: Flash the .zip file
Done
2: If you have installed a previous version of CWM on your eMMC (such as 3.0.0.6) or tried to install CWM via Rom-manager, again on your eMMC. And now you cannot boot into CWM via pwr+home. OR when you boot the eMMC(internal) and have anything other than 'touch the future of reading' as the first splash screen.
Step 1: Have a bootable CWM SD-card, any version will work.
Step 2: Get the recovery repair flashable .zip from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=958748
Step 3: Boot to SD-card
Step 4: Flash recovery repair .zip
3: If 2 did not work for you. AKA you still cannot boot into CWM on the eMMC with pwr+home. Or, have a stuck at 'incert name' screen type situation.
Step 1: Have a bootable CWM SD-card, any version will work
Step 2: Get the CWM root-safe removal tool from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690
Step 3: Get the CWM 3.0.1.0 flashable .zip from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=971197
Step 4: Get the kernel for your specific system from dalingrin's thread, which is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925451
Step 5: boot CWM SD-card
Step 6: Flash CWM root-safe removal tool
Step 7: Flash CWM 3.0.1.0 .zip
Step 8: Flash your specific kernel you got on step 4.
Step 9: Reboot
Nice tutorial woot. Very clear and precise.
Thanks for this! Saved me a lot time searching threads when repairing a friend's nook.

The process is not the easiest - but it can be with your patience and full attention. When I had my HTC Raider (Canadian version of the Vivid), I had collected all the info needed to get my phone rooted/bootloader/s-off/recovery from right out of the box. I will paste it all below. I think that when it mentions things like the RUU/Stock, you should use an appropriate one for your phone model. Not that the instructions below start with a ICS stock RUU!
I think the forums for this phone have quieted down a bit, so links may be dead now. That said, contact me if you need any of the files mentioned. I probably have them all archived.
As for S-Off procedure, I remember when following all of the threads that it was very important to read and follow every instruction exactly. I had missed a small step and I could not get it done. Eventually I caught my mistake, tried again, and got S-Off with no problems. I had done it on WinXP (or Win7 maybe).
If any of the instructions below contain errors, please let me know and I will update! I am not responsible for anything bad happening to the device... this is simply a collection of all of the great posts on this forum.
*** I understand that juopunutbear/unlimited.io team do not support the Windows versions of their tools any more (specifically I'm referring to ControlBear that I used to successfully S-OFF my phone.). They mention on their site to only use the latest tool (linux only), and have asked people to NOT bundle their old Windows-based software. Back then, the Windows version of ControlBear for ICS worked great for me (and I'm sure many others) in WindowsXP (or 7). I obviously won't attach or post links to it here, but I'm pretty sure I do have it archived, so contact me if you need it (and this obviously goes with the understanding that myself or them are not responsible for what you decide to do with it)
SECTION 1: STARTING FRESH WITH STOCK ICS RUU - note that RUU's will refuse to flash if you have already unlocked your bootloader. They will require you to re-lock your bootloader to flash.
To start, install the stock Bell ICS RUU (or even the Rogers ICS RUU is OK)
(RUU_HOLIDAY_ICS_35_S_BM_3.38.666.2_Radio_3.04.4740.11_34.29.701040.22_release_255916_signed)
**You should use this opportunity to make sure you have the appropriate drivers installed on your computer so it can communicate with your phone via Fastboot, ADB, etc.!
Filename I used for drivers: HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
SECTION 2: UNLOCK THE BOOTLOADER
Next, unlock your bootloader.
-Sign up at htcdev.com
-Log in (make sure youre logged in!)
-Click Unlock bootloader
-Follow Instructions
Quick version of instructions:
1) Get phone into Fastboot mode
2) Run "fastboot oem get_identifier_token" in command line
3) Paste the token text into the htcdev page
4) you get emailed Unlock_code.bin from htcdev and link to next steps. Download that .bin file.
5) Run "fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin"
6) use volup/down on phone to choose yes and hit power to accept
7) Phone will data/cache wipe and start fresh
SECTION 3: S-OFF!
Now, do you want to S-OFF? It's painful but follow this word for word and it should work ok! It makes flashing roms and kernels a lot easier (no restrictions or workarounds needed). If you don't want to S-OFF, you can still do stuff like flash ROMS. You would just need to flash the kernel (that is appropriate for that rom) separately.
Note that S-OFF stays (i.e. if you install a stock RUU rom to your phone, it won't turn S-ON), so you only have to do this procedure once! But remember, if you have unlocked your bootloader, I beleive that RUU's will refuse to flash until you re-lock the bootloader.
1) Since your bootloader is unlocked, you are almost ready to S-OFF
2) Download the WCXJB ROOT PACK zip to your hard drive and UNZIP it (to, say, C:\temp\SOFF)
3) On your phone, make sure in your settings, USB Debugging is ENABLED in development
4) Turn off your phone, pull battery, put battery back.
5) Turn it back on by holding VOLUMEDOWN + POWER
6) Use the volume rocker and power button to select fastboot
7) Connect your phone to your PC
8) Open a command prompt window.
C:
cd \temp\SOFF
fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.img
9) Now you can reboot your phone
10) Download and put Vivid_CWM_Root_VER2 zip file on root of internal sdcard (aka NOT in any folders)
11) Boot into H-Boot like you did before (turn off phone, turn back on holding power + vol down), and use the volume rockers to go to "recovery" and press the power button to select it
12) Select "install zip from sdcard"
13) Select the VIVID_CWM_ROOT_VER2.zip to flash it. Then select "reboot"
14) You are now perma-rooted in preparation of the S-OFF procedure.
15) Turn off phone. Remove the SIM Card, the MicroSD card and the battery.
*-You will need a spare, formatted MicroSD card inserted. Do not use your regular MicroSD card because it will become corrupted/wiped during the S-OFF process!
*-Make sure your battery is fully charged!
*-You will also need a short length of insulated wire, so you can connect the 2 points during the S-OFF procedure.
*-Beside the MicroSD slot, is a small screw holding in a square panel.
The screw is covered by a VOID sticker. Removing this will void your warranty!
Put the screw and square panel somewhere safe.
Look at the JPG - it can be seen here: ( http://unlimited.io/images/wt_holiday.jpg )
The point indicated is what you need to ground (to the GND) point
You will of course do this with your short length of insulated wire!
Be sure the exposed part of the wire isnt so thick that it will touch other points!
The point is kind of small! The ground point is pretty big and easy to hit.
16) Put battery back in, and the SPARE MICROSD - not your usual MicroSD. Keep that safe.
17) Boot phone normally. Make sure (again) USB debugging is enabled in Developer options of the Settings!
18) *** I understand that juopunutbear/unlimited.io team do not support the Windows versions of their tools any more. They mention on their site to only use the latest tool (linux only), and have asked people to NOT bundle their old software. So for this step, all I can say is that back then, the Windows version of ControlBear for ICS worked great for me (and I'm sure many others) in WindowsXP (or 7). I obviously won't attach or post links to it here, but I'm pretty sure I do have it archived, so contact me if you need it (and this obviously goes with the understanding that myself or them are not responsible for what you decide to do with it)
19) Unzip the CONTROLBEAR zip to an easy to access path (like C:\temp\SOFF2)
20) Run controlbear as admin(windows) or root or using sudo on linux
Now get your insulated wire and get ready! Only connect the 2 points when instructed.
You will have to watch and wait for it to tell you.
Do not press any of the buttons on the phone during the process.
When you are instructed to do the wire trick, briefly connect
the point and the GND point using the wire, then wait approximately 1.75
seconds and then again connect the 2 contacts together.
Allow the program to continue.
Note: it may take several attempts of running the program in order to obtain the correct timing for the wire trick.
After doing the “wire-trick” your phone will reboot.
If you see the following message from ControlBear after doing the wire trick:
ErrorMsg: Still sober.
This means that you have been unsuccessful in implementing the wire-trick. Run ControlBear again.
The usual cause for this is that you failed to perform 2 clean contacts
or mis-timed the wire trick (or you didnt flash the perm root before
starting - but that was indicated above, so you must have done that.)
Your phone will reboot several times during the process, this is normal. ControlBear will tell you when it has finished whether successfully or not.
Once your phone is rebooted and back to normal, you can shut it off, pull the battery, put the square panel and screw back, and put your regular MicroSD back (as well as your SIM card).
SECTION 4: FLASHING CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY
(Optional but recommended! It's a great Recovery
Note that if you want to install WCX's rom, you will need to have WCX's recovery to flash it!
So don't use Clockworkmod at all if you plan on flashing WCX's roms.)
1) Put your phone into bootloader mode by turning it on with VOLDOWN+POWER.
(You will have to pull the battery to make sure the phone is fully off before doing this)
2) In the bootloader use the volume buttons to choose Fastboot
and hit POWER to select it.
3) Download Clockworkmod recovery (filename: CWM-beta2.img) and put it in an easy path
(like C:\temp\cwmrecovery)
4) Copy the adb and fastboot package to this same folder (c:\temp\cwmrecovery)
5) Go to command prompt and:
C:
cd\temp\cwmrecovery
fastboot flash recovery CWM-beta2.img
6) Clockworkmod recovery will be flashed. You can get to it by booting your phone into
bootloader mode, then choosing Recovery
SECTION 5: INSTALLING CUSTOM ROMS
If you S-OFF'd successfully, custom roms will install fully via CWM recovery (kernel and everything) so you will not have to flash the kernel separately.
If you don't want to S-OFF (or were unsuccessful with S-OFF and simply can't do it), it is important to understand that when you install a custom rom, the kernel for that rom (or whatever compatible kernel) needs to be flashed separately before or after the rom is flashed!! This will be addressed in the steps below.
1) Download the ROM you want (any ICS-based custom rom) and copy its .ZIP file to your MicroSD card
2) Get into Recovery mode (by booting phone into bootloader mode and choosing Recovery)
3) MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT ROM - VERY IMPORTANT.
Just use the volume keys to go to Backup and choose it by hitting POWER.
This will help you get back to normal if the rom you install doesnt work
or if you just dont like the rom you have installed.
Make sure your MicroSD card has lots of space
The backup takes under 1 gig but you'll want more space for more backups/roms later.
Side note -- To restore your backup, go into recovery, do your 4 wipes (data/cache/dalvik/system) and
then choose backup/restore, choose restore and choose whichever backup you made from the
list. It will be date/timestamped.
***Note - if you did not S-OFF your phone, im not sure if Restore will flash your old/appropriate Kernel. You may have to flash that backups kernel (boot.img) after you do the restore (testing required - will this be necessary for S-ON phones?) If this is needed, general kernel flashing instructions are below starting at Step 10. Just make sure you are flashing your appropriate boot.img from your backup folder!
4) Now that the backup is done: In Clockworkmod recovery, go back to the main menu.
5) WIPES - Now we should do the 4 wipes. Choose Wipe Data, Wipe Cache, then go into Advanced, and choose Wipe Dalvik cache, then go into Mounts and Storage and choose Format /system.
6) Now from the main menu of clockworkmod, you can choose "install .zip from sdcard"
7) Choose the zip of the rom you wish to install (remember you copied it to your MicroSD card in step 1 so it should be listed.). When the install is finished, it may offer to reboot your phone. S-OFF users can go ahead. If you didn't S-OFF, you should probably pull the battery after choosing reboot.
8) IF YOU ARE S-OFF, YOU ARE DONE - IF YOU DIDNT S-OFF YOUR PHONE, YOU MUST CONTINUE SO YOU CAN FLASH THE APPROPRIATE KERNEL FOR THE ROM!
9) Get phone into bootloader mode by holding VOLDOWN+POWER. Choose FASTBOOT.
10) On your PC, open the ZIP that has the ROM you just installed. In the zip
will be a file called "boot.img".
***NOTE that some roms have multiple kernels to offer during the install process.
***Try to identify which boot.img is which kernel.
***If it doesn't matter to you, you should be able to pick any of them, as they were all packaged with the ROM because they are compatible with the ROM.
11) Copy the boot.img to an easy path (like C:\temp\whateverromkernel)
Copy your ADB/Fastboot package to that folder as well so you can run everything from there.
12) In command prompt:
C:
CD\temp\whateverromkernel
fastboot flash boot boot.img
13) The kernel will be flashed. Once it's done, you can restart the phone, and boot into the ROM!
**NOTE** if you're ever having trouble (whether s-on or s-off) flashing kernels (i.e. its saying its not allowed or something), your phone may have to experience the flashing of an 'insecure' kernel. kozmikkick's "stockish" kernel is an insecure boot.img that, once flashed, will allow you to flash whatever kernel's you want (you only have to flash the insecure boot.img once and then you'll be good)

Vivid_CWM_Root_ver2 - also in the superguide thread
Controlbear ICS zip for windows - discontinued - may be hard to find. google it and search a lot. If you cant find it, send me a PM, i may have it still
CWM-beta2.img - is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812452&highlight=cwm-beta2
