[Q] Changing Network Locked Tab to Generic - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got a Galaxy Tab from when it was release on Orange UK due to at the timew being Staff there and got it for a good deal.
The problem I have is that OUK Tabs only go as far as Froyo and now my apps are starting to not get updated due to the old OS.
So what I'd like to do is turn it into a gereric UK Tab so that I can install the standard Gingerbread firmware. At the moment, I don't want to start playing with different ROMs, just get it to a point where Kies will install the newer official firmware.
I've already got it SIM unlocked (on the off-chance I put a non-Orange SIM in it) but I'm not sure on the rest. I assume I need to root it before I do anything else.
This site is full of good stuff, unfortunately I'm not 100% certain I've understood what I need to do. Is there a step-by-step guide on how I get it turned into a generic model? I don't mind getting my hands dirtying, so am not asking for an app that will do all of it for me (unless of course there is one), I just need some instructions on how to do it.
Thanks in advance.

I would recommend you to use overcome method.
use Odin to flash official stock gingerbread JQ1.
Download GB stock safe v5 and the PDF guide.

[Q] Which firmware should I use?

Hi guys, I'm new here! And to the Android scene in general. Before you ask, I've been trying to use the search function, but unfortunately it says try 10 minutes later, and it said that around 15 minutes ago...
I've recently taken interest in Darkyy's 5.4 rom, but I understand with most custom made things, there can be bugs involved, and I want to prepare for the worst case scenario and be able to flash back to the original firmware, so I've got a few questions.
1)I was just wondering, which firmware is the one I need?
I live in Australia, and I am on the 3 network, and have recently updated to 2.2 officially via KIES.
If it matters, I've also rooted and voodoo one click lagfixed it, along with officially unlocked the phone via the 3 network.
PDA: I9000HVJP4
PHONE: I9000HVJP3
CSC: I9000HUTJP4
2) If I reflash original firmware, will the phone still be unlocked, or will I have to unlock the phone again with 3? I'm pretty sure they keep records of that stuff... so will they be willing to do it again for me if that is the case? Or will it not relock itself?
Thanks guys!
If you reflash it using the firmware from samfirmware.com, it should remain unlocked.
You will need to remove all lagfix before reflashing it. Always remember to remove lagfix before flashing. The root can stay.
As for Darkyy's rom, I don't know what on earth happened lately, but he completely changed the instructions for no reason (far as I can tell). The old instructions were simply to flash back to an old Eclair firmware, and then install his rom. Works every single time.
Thanks man, I'll remember to do that, but does it matter which firmware version I go with if I want to restore my original firmware, perhaps even for warrantee reasons? I have a tendancy to mess things up beyond repair...
I'd hate to bump my own topic but... Nobody can help?
As you have jp4 you should flash that from samfirmware to get back to stock should things go wrong.

[Q] What firmware use to upgrade from 2.2 to 2.2.1

Hello,
I've a Galaxy-S (was from T-Mobile Uk, but I unlocked it, debranded it and so on), it used to be 2.1, so back in november I updated to 2.2 using the Kies trick (changing the area code and so on). Now I'm finding myself *not-so-happy* about many bugs that are around (sometimes apps just crash... etc..). I'd like to go to 2.2.1 if this would help. But Kies doesn't even show an available update, so I was thinking of flashing one with Odin. Which one do you recommend?
My firmware is XXJPP. I don't remeber how to get other info/codes, so tell me how if you need them.
Also, I'm ready to wipe everything, but I'd avoid it. So tell me how.
Thanks.
JPY or WJS8 in UK with CPW csc .
Build your own in the rom kitchen .

I suggest you the JS8 ROM. Is the last froyo 2.2.1 european firmware. You can use the JS8 rome in the romkitchen to customize your fw as you want
Odin for flashing Kies for orugnal upgrade
Is JS8 an official upgrade from JPY(2.2.1)? For the UK aswell????
Or is it just a general European(including UK) update?
I'm on JPY right now. Upgraded officially from JPO(2.2) in the UK.
Do you think it is better to flash JS8 firmware?
(I have tried 2.3.3 JVK but I would rather wait for the official gingerbread update)
JPY is still the most current firmware for UK. I'm in Australia and have been using it since release. Docs version of course.
JS8 is Nordic I think.

For stock go to samfirware.com, sign up, download Odin and jpy 2.2.1 (for UK). Install with Odin without repartition ticked and you should still have your apps/data.
Site has all the files and instructions you need. Just make sure you have download mode.
2.2.1 is miles better than 2.2. You'll wonder why you waited so long.

The networks do not upgrade all the incremental updates JPY last one in general use and none have bothered to push out the later upgrades preferring to wait for the official release of 2.3 .
Either JPY or WJS8 will work well on UK phones .

I tried both the kitchen and the: stock Rome. Even if the kitchen seems so clever and you don't need Odin in order to upgrade, I ended up with a 2.2.1 Tom that didn't have the market app, and other basic ones. Plus the media scanner was crashing every 10 seconds. Another one started up in Chinese and kept crashing various system apps. That's to say that it is not the best choice for stability. Instead I went to samfirmware got 2.3.2 and it is stable, clean and fast. Using Odin is easy in the end so I recommend this if you want a fully functional phone. And gingerbread is so faaaast
That's to say that it is not the best choice for stability.
You are doing something wrong then as its the safest and most problem free method .

I have 3uk sgs and immediately went for odin for all my flash updates.
First thing is to check u have three button combo working. Just pull the battery to get out of that mode.
I'd go straight to gingerbread JPK. And with the few, clockworkmod zips you can add battery percentage and a few other nice things that aren't included.
I haven't looked back as jpk is such a great rom - memory management is sorted so no need for autokillet or taskmanagers.

[Q] Flashing to 2.2

Hi guys purchased an SGS from Hong Kong, im in NZ, its on 2.1 and im desperate to get it to 2.2, is there anything i need to lookout for when upgrading?
If something happens and i need to revert back to stock do i need to use the HK firmware or can i use one local to my country?
Whats the best method to upgrade to 2.2, should i use a custom rom?
any help would be sweet, been reading alot but getting confused.
You should search up a program called odin. Its a pc program that most people use to flash their phones. Its also very versatile, can flash 2.1, 2.2 or 2.3 etc. Careful though, flashing the wrong settings may cause your phone to not boot. The guides on odin are pretty clear though.
Another thing to familiarize yourself with is clock work mod recovery. Its an app on your phone that can also be used to flash firmware or install applications - very useful.
Should something go wrong when flashing, there is a thread on xda called EZ base. Its a pre configured set of odin files that are very effective in restoring a phone in bad situations.
Youtube may be your friend to help you see how this type of thing works but nothing beats trying it yourself
Thanks ive done heaps of reading, aware of both those programs, just worried about flashing the wrong rom!
Flashed roms on android before but all my phones have been from my country
will look for the EZ base thread as back up.
Just check in your settings which version of Android is on your phone now, then go to samfirmware.com and check with which region your firmware coincides. There firmwares are generally split by continents, so all Asian firmwares should work for all Asian SGS but check to be sure coz your phone may have been imported

[Q] Bell Galaxy S i9000m running on Rogers... Gingerbread?

Hi All,
I bought the Bell version of the phone (Vibrant) because I wanted the front facing camera... Then unlocked and rooted it and inserted my Rogers SIM and have had no issues for quite a while. I successfully loaded Froyo when it became available on Kies without any sd problems. (had to re-root but no big deal).
Now I understand that Bell has released Gingerbread via Kies, but when I open Kies, it doesn't recognize my firmware at all... just shows blank.
I un-rooted and erased all data to see if that would allow me the upgrade but still nothing...
Can anyone offer any assistance or have the files that I can install using a different method?
Much appreciated,
Jamie
Use the search Luke....
Seriously, there is a huge thread detailing Bell's KG3, including dumps you can flash with Odin instead of using Kies. The best part? Even though it is only 9 posts down from yours, I ever got you the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211939
If you don't want to use KG3, just flash any of the Gingerbread roms in the development forum and flash an appropriate modem. 99% of those threads include flashing instructions.

Thanks,
I did read most of that thread but can't find anyone else who's using a Rogers SIM on an i9000m... I don't like or use Kies very often and I'm getting annoyed that it won't seem to even read my current firmware. MyPhoneExplorer seems to read it just fine but Kies seems to only want to be some kind of media toy.
I will borrow a Bell SIM to see if it will recognize long enough to use the Kies update, and if that fails I'll flash with Odin.
I assume I'll have to root again once I flash?

Yes you will.
make sure you have the latest version of kies, also make sure your csc is set to BMC (open dialer *#272*"your imei"*), select BMC and isntall that will factory reset your phone btw... after that it should work... I am not sure that a Rogers Sim card is affecting it, have you tried just pulling the SIM altogether and connecting? Are you running any custom ROMs currently or have you in the past? Maybe flash back to UGKC1 with Odin if you are and then use Kies to update.
Ended up finding some detailed instructions on "MostlyIrrelevant" for installing 2.3.4 with a Rogers (and Bell) supported Modem. a couple more steps to install the ROM, but it's a deodexed version of the international release with the bloatware removed and TW Launcher removed and replaced by TouchWiz... nicely also has CWM and Titanium in it too, so flashes are much easier from now on. (small workaround to get Bluetooth working but the solution was also in the comments section.) Next step to get back a couple pieces of Samsung bloatware back on... mostly SocialHub and Samsung e-mail... so I can connect all my contact lists and e-mail accounts into one place. I bookmarked the link to Pharaohnough's posting of the apks for these apps (THANKS!) that I want back but will have to wait 'till after work to try them.

Problem with my Bell i9000M (Needs serious help)

Hi XDA developers,
I'm a newbie. I've been searching posts on xda and still couldn't remedied the problem. I currently have the i9000m from Bell Canada. I upgraded my i9000m to 2.3.3 Gingerbread earlier in Kies. Recently, I've been trying to unlock my phone and without rooting, the best solution seems to be going back to Eclair, so I followed the youtube tutorial by djeddieone and tried to go back to Eclair using Odie. It basically flashes a rom (I suspect that's a T-mobile rom that shouldn't be flashed onto my phone) in Odin. My phone no longer boots and cannot get into recovery mode. (When I try to start the phone, there are random colour dots showing on the screen.) The only mode that works seems to be downloading mode. I think I need to flash a stock rom from bell, but the link on sammobile (i9000ugjk3) seems to be expired and cannot be downloaded. So i'm trying to find alternative ways to see how to remedy this problem.
Thanks in advance.
I highly doubt that Bell will release a new update for the i9000m. You are better finding a newer rom (JVT or newer) and flashing that via Odin. Im using CM9 nightlies (but I feel it has too many bugs for daily use). If you can find a newer rom that is tweaked, you should notice better battery, faster, etc.
Just my $0.02
Hey I had similar issue - tried flashing new firmware w/odin & stuck with download only... I finally went to a Bell store to send it in, but they were able to use new firmware recovery software to re-flash stock gb2.3.3! I just said Kies messed-up the phone... Anyway, it will get you back to stock functionality. Good luck!

Since you can still get into download mode, you're OK.
You can download the UGKG3 ROM files from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881
Search for UGKG3.
The file is in 7Zip format. If you don't have something to unpack it, get IZArc.
Flash the 3 files and you should be up and running.

After you restore your phone to KG3 via Odin/Download mode per Black Rose's link earlier in this thread, you should be back where you started on KG3.
Then from KG3 ( 2.3.3),
I suggest:
1) Use SuperOneClick to root your phone (SuperOneClick can also UNroot your phone later if you want).
2) Use Galaxy_S Unlock by Helroz available on the G-store.
This worked well for me with no problems.
And just for reassurance, NEVER flash a ROM that is not explicitly for the i9000/i9000M to this device.
