I'm going to be doing some field work soon, and want to be able to take my phone with me instead of taking a cheap feature phone like I used to.
Problem is, its going to be dirty, cold dusty and jagged and I need a good rugged case with screen protection, preferably one that won't me back 40-60$ like the otterbox does.
must have features are port covers, a dust resilient screen protector, and a toughened shell/case.
thanks in advance for any help

Even if you were to go with something other than an OtterBox, for that level of protection I believe you'd still be looking at the ~$50 price range.
Im a field service engineer and let me tell you that my otter commuter saved my phone a few times - from multiple angle drops to dirty fingers. had it on for a week now and it works as advertised. was looking for a cheaper alternative as well but after reading the reviews and watching drop tests videos its the best protection you can get for ~50 bucks.
Drop test for the note 2 commuter? Only seen defender vids. Link? Thanks

I am also a field service engineer and work with literally tons of abrasive dust. I have a cheap fosmon kickstand cover that I bought on amazon. it was really only a few bucks. I also have on a cheap wet apply screen protector I bought on amazon I think it is the just like glass protector. The case makes the softbuttons hard to use, so you may want to flash a rom with the nexus buttons enabled.

i am using speck candyshell on a daily basis now that i am used to the bulk it adds. Apart from the fact that the back scratches up pretty much easily, I don't have any negative comments about it.
A pretty decent protective shell excluding the front screen protector of the otterbox.

Incipio DualPro Shine, has silicone inner layer and hard poly around the corners and back etc. Also raised over the screen, just add your own wet application screen protector.
Casemate told me the Tough case is coming out on Wednesday. Always liked it more than the commuter

I have the commuter case. I believe it is a great case and I highly reccomend it. It cost me around 32 euros and I dont regret it. Most of the times when we look for cheap alternatives we end up spending more money on various cases just to return to our first and more expensive option. And if you want my opinion you dont just but 2 parts of silicon and plastic. You buy the reassurance that whatever happens to your case Otterbox will replace it. And of course you also buy their experience. Just check all these crazy drop tests on youtube.

I was surprised with the quality when it arrived. It's a two part non-brand case that is made of rubber and plastic that basically click together. It feels great in your hands specially when you slide your fingers in the back with the soft rubber balls. The buttons are covered and it gives a nice soft click when you touch it. The screen is protected from touching the surface and the S Pen slot is wide and you can easily remove the pen with no extra effort. I love how it squeezes in tightly and it gives off a slim profile. The rubber corners of the phone stick out a tiny bit offering great support if it's dropped.
Pros: - Good quality
- Hugs the device perfectly
- Slim profile
- I feel like it could survive a few falls
Cons: No belt clip or stand

I bought it at amazon for $9 they do have other colors available.
Looks good, but the back of the case I don't like.
It looks like you can charge with the case on.
I have to take my case off to charge my note 2.

Only with this phone could we be doing this in this fasion, it's awesome.
It may be a good case but that case is ugly in my opinion. I like a more simplistic classy look. I went ahead and ordered it though because its only case ive seen that actually protects your phone if u drop it. This should hold me over til the black Otterbox Commuter case is available. Hopefully this case looks better in real life.

I'm looking to get a Note II case that can double as wallet. The one I picked up at Verizon when I got the phone is a bit bulky, and I'm considering getting a new one Does anyone have one they like?
I can't answer your question; but the reason why might interest you.
I couldn't dream of using a case which leaves the corners exposed but I've only found one wallet case with full corner protection, but from the pictures it would be too bulky (the leather protrudes from the side further that the edge covering)
I'll link later if I remember but it's on play.com type note 2 wallet.
If you find a skin but full protection wallet case please pm me!

There are plenty over at www.gmarket.kr it seems like that the koreans like wallet case, and they do have the largest range.
I tend to like the forest green brand you can find them at gmarket or ebay.
I've got this sinjimoru sinji pouch from amazon which can attatch to the back of any case or phone basically. Can fit like 4 cards and some cash.. I even got an extra battery and two cards in it once. It was around $10, attaches with a sticky type back, doesn't stretch and I absolutely love it. Have it on the back of my otterbox.

Interesting - a lot of the cases on the website look interesting, definitely considering one of the ones that double as a stand. I see your point - just figured that if I have a big phone, I could cut down on the amount of things I have to carry around. The one I have has worked ok so far, but tends to bulge in the middle. Don't know if there are any that solve that problem though.
If anyone is wondering, play.com is buy.com in the US; looks like it has a smaller selection though.

It's only $12, it's good quality, not real leather of course.
Easily fits two drivers licenses, two credit cards, and a few Disney passes.
Not really a wallet to hold cash, though you could put a few bills folded into it.
It also folds on the back to prop up like a stand.
The phone snaps into a plastic case on the inside, seems to provide meager protection. Corners aren't really protected well.
It also uses a button clasp instead of a magnet, which is good.

What's your favorite case for the vivid? I currently have a no name cheap tpu hybrid case from eBay and it does the job. But I'm curious about what you use.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda app-developers app
I have a Spec hard case that I bought at the AT&T store when i got my vivid. It gets the job done but the rubber edges on the cover have started to peel off.
i always use this "s line" case design for all my phones:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Silic...996491?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item5651871c0b
very tight fit... not solid like plastic, but slightly flexible enough to not be flimsy.. very good corner protection... i threw my desire hd on the floor on cement once with these.. landed on the corner and bounced back lol.
also has good grip on the sides as you can see... and its also the only case ive had on my phones that doesnt seem to affect signal
Awesome deal.

I gotta second this. Their warrantee service is second to none. They replaced a Defender for my Vivid because the rubber was stretching and tearing. They replaced a defender for my son's One XL because the rubber was tearing and case was cracked. The replacements showed up within days, virtually no questions asked. My son is pretty rough on his. The phone would be trash long ago if not for the OtterBox protection.
I've been using an Incipio hybrid case ever since my Otterbox started tearing (see above) and I have only one complaint, the outer hard shell is brittle and can crack if dropped the right way. It survived very many drops and its not cumbersome in my pocket, something I cant say for my old Otterbox.
This is the case I have love it

Hey guys so my note 2 is otw and I want a good glass protector for it. I have checked a few out and have seen good things about voyager 2, and the siedio vitro one. However will these fit with either a otter box case or UAG? Or are they to thick? The voyager I know is .4mm which is not to bad but wanted to check with you guys first.
Thanks

The Otterbox Commuter for the Note 2 should fit with a glass screen protector. No cases that cover over the front of the screen will fit if you use a glass screen protector.

Yes they're worth it. I think plastic ones are pretty useless because they're so thin. They can only protect the screen from minor scratching, but provide little to no protection against dropping or knocking. Furthermore, glass protectors are truly oleophobic.
But how does it affect s-pen functionality?

the gap in between will likely create more reflection and reduce brightness more than a screen protector that just sticks to the screen.
The seidio vitreo glass screen protector is freaking awesome. Mine is a little scratched - just barely - in a few spots, but given my note 2 skidded some 20 feet screen-down over cobblestones, very impressed.
While it was on that regrettable journey, it was also encased in a seidio convert case.
I highly recommend both.
