Full wipe question - Galaxy Tab 8.9 General

I have rooted and cycled through a few custom roms. I have been on cm10.1 since early december and feel like i have lots of my apps in 2 or 3 different places on the memory. How do I know what is current and what is old unused info. I would be willing to do a fun system reset if i knew it would get rid of all the extra junk i have know but even when i have done that in the past it seems like there is still stuff i installed in the memory

You can factory reset somewhere in the settings menu, or if you have installed cwn you can delete everything within that and install a new rom via odin.

To get rid of everything, you'll have to format you internal sd card and do a factory reset. Then flash the stock rom with Odin. What recovery are you using?

I am using clockworkmod. I have only used odin when i rooted.

Can I deleted everything stored under the sd card without messing anything up

Depends on what you mean by not messing anything up. If you want your phone to be like new and you're willing to odin or recovery a new Rom, then yes. If you want existing stuff to run correctly, then no

You could format /system, format /sdcard, do a system wipe, wipe dalvik cache and then flash your rom from with the zip with sideload (on ADB), assuming you have all your personal files and apps backed up.

[Q] Used Nexus One - fresh start

Hi,
I have purchased a used Nexus One running stock 2.3.3 (with locked bootloader) and I am wondering how I am going to wipe it as if it were a brand new install (no residual settings, apps, accounts etc)?
I have done a bit of research and found that the recovery allows you to wipe data, is this what I would do?
Thanks,

Okay I'll try that. Thanks! How does this compare to the recovery 'wipe'?
if you're not rooted then this is your only option.it works well. to do a recovery wipe then you will need root and a custom recovery installed.
I thought it was the same thing? You can wipe in stock recovery...can't you?

Yes, you can

Just rooted .... now what?

Ive just rooted my galaxy s with cf root. If for some reason i wanted to unroot and go back to what i had before i rooted which was stock 2.3.3 JVO, how would i do it? In the about phone section of the settings nothing has changed. The firmware version is still the same and mentions nothing about cf root. Is this normal?
I now want to start using custom roms which will speed up my phone. What do you reccomen?
Check the kernel version. That would have changed. I'm not sure of unrooting. To my knowledge, you'd probably just have to flash a fresh firmware using ODIN. As far as custom ROMs go, I just posted: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14520580&postcount=15
The kernel version hasn't changed.

I'm not sure, but I never came across a way to unroot... If I want to remove the root I just flash a stock rom and wipe everything (Usually when I need to send my phone to my carrier )
If I flash a vision custom rom, will I lose all data such as apps I.have installed? Basically, would it be like a factory reset?

Vision custom ROM?
Sorry about that i have no idea why i put 'vision'.
Well then it would depend on the specific custom ROM. Some wipe data, some don't and that is usually specified. Either way, if you're moving onto a custom ROM, it is still highly advised you backup your data, do a factory reset and then restore it.

On the guide it says I have to wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition. Are you sure that I won't lose my photos?

Factory reset only wipes app data. So you lose all apps and settings, not the data on your sdcard, like photos, music, etc.

What does it ask you to do next?

When you toggled to safe mode, which.toggle option did you select? One will back you up and the other one won't I don't believe.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I just did toggle safe system after done it says safe system is now enabled I would flash ics I think just want to reboot but just making sure I didn't screw anything up while in recovery
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I didn't flash any roms just rooted running the exploit and then enabled toggle safe system so I should probably just reboot and be fine but I just want to make sure
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Once you toggle to safe, then you flash ics. Even if it didn't back up your original system, the worst that should happen when going back to your normal system is that it will take you back to a fresh install and you will need to set your accounts back up and reinstall your apps

If you don't flash ics (or any rom) when your in safe mode and reboot your phone, it won't load because there isn't a version of android there.

flashed ics and it gave me bad/installation aborted going to try and transfer on sd card with my wifes phone with a fresh download see if that works and it should go onto external correct???
I believe I have mine in internal. I think you can install it from either location.
You may want to clear the cache and stystem data before flashing if you didn't. Sometimes that helps.

So that's a workaround that will repartition your chip, means you will lose some space on internal SD.
Can you let us know how much space you lost? Its usually around 3 to 4gb, but have seen as high as 5.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
It is possible to try and regain some of that lost space, but its very time consuming, There is also a way you can swap the memory around, So your external SD will become internal and vice versa, Pretty neat if you have a 16gb+ external sd.
Although with the brickbug bug, Id much rather keep all my precious stuff on my external sd just incase.
See this link - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28057775
i lost about 3-4gb...not a deal breaker since it has external sd...im happy...she is running...again..

I would've suggested trying to copy the backup you see in root browser to the external sd, you mentioned you installed to stock slot and wiped and every now and then ss does that, sometimes it erases your internal sd and maybe what you see in root browser are the "corpse" of the backup you made. Try to get an ex sd will save you a lot of headache in the future.
