Unlocking boot loader didn't erase phone - Nexus 4 General

So I went to unlock my boot loader by typing in fastboot oem unlock and it said the lock state was unlock. Then I flashed cwm recovery and flashed SU/busybox through cwm, rebooted and everything is still there! Anyone know why it didn't erase everything? I also have root, and am still on stock. Thanks!

Huh...I wonder why some phones don't get erased when the bootloader is unlocked...Hopefully someone knows because I'm curious!

I "just" think that your phone/anyone that isnt delete any thing because it is a factory unlocked.
(Just think)(cuz some phone does)

Factory unlocked has nothing to do with the bootloader. A factory unlocked phone is a phone that is SIM unlocked and can be used on any GSM carrier, not locked to one specific carrier. The unlocking they're talking about here (bootloader) is what allows the security of the boot loader to be set to off and allows a custom recovery/kernel to be flashed which can then be used to grant root access which means writing to the system partition. All phones (even nexus) ship with a locked bootloader. The nexus is not encrypted and can be unlocked easily, which is what we are talking about here.

Mine didn't wipe either, didn't pay much attention to it.

It is a bug introduced in 4.1 I believe (the Galaxy Nexus has the same issue). It can be fixed with any future update to the bootloader so you can't depend on it not formatting on unlock.

[Q] Question about bootloader

I can't find anything about how to detect a unlocked bootloader. I have a rooted N1 and want to know if my bootloader was unlocked by the former owner.
Can anyone tell me how to find out if the bootloader is unlocked?

When you start the phone, at the bit with the coloured x. Is there a padlock? If there is, it has been unlocked.

Oke, thanks! Then mine isn't unlocked!
Gonna search how to unlock it!

fastboot oem unlock
Peasy.
I have another question:
I've been searching about unlocking the bootloader, but what are the advantages of doing so?
I can already install custom roms.

Safer radio flash, you'll never be stuck without root. Can boot a new kernel/recovery without flashing it.
Only way to access phone if system and recovery become corrupt...
You can always unlock the bootloader later, but remember that you use the power button when unlocking the bootloader. If you have an iffy power button, you may want to unlock before the burton dies...

Thanks for the answers! I've unlocked the bootloader and when I was done I got a lot of FC's. So now I reflashed CM7 #18 and it seams to be working fine!
Thanks a lot!
But why would you wanna boot a kernel or recovery without flasing it?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Could be one of many reasons...
Say you want to restore a backup made with Clockwork, but prefer Amon Ra as your regular recovery, you can just boot into Clockwork, adbd not have to think about restoring Amon Ra, etc...

Boot loader unlock question

I'm kind of confused in this..if the boot loader is locked how are we able to flash safe strap and stuff? And has anyone tried the moto unlock command on their phone? I don't get why the boot loader is jnlockable on most of the new ones but this one isn't yet

I believe safestrap and bootstrap get on there by some kind of exploit, outside of the bootloader. Whatever it is, its wicked and the Droid3/XT860 community has some amazing people!

It's have tried running unlock commands through adb and get "command not found " or something along those lines. It appears that a lower level check/encryption has been enabled on these phones which doesn't allow us to unlock the bootloader.
Hashcode created safestrap/bootstrap by doing something in the 2nd init phase of the boot process. With the locked bootloader we have to run the stock kernel which makes it really hard to get ics hardware features working.

Is there no other phone that uses a similar boot as the Droid 3 with low level encryption/

I think all of the recent phones by Motorola, after the Atrix have the same locked boot loader. I could be wrong though, but that's what I've sort of observed.
That'd make sense considering or looks like) they use the same exploit. But if this one is older wouldn't that make it easier?

Got tempered phone?

I bought a used phone. After booting in bootloader, it reads tempered and relocked.
Then i selected the option "recovery"... It showed some stock recovery type animation for a few seconds.... And when the phone booted, the phone was like factory reset.... Not even the sd card files were there... Completely wiped.
Is it normal?
Also how to check if it is rooted or not? And steps more needed to flash custom recovery?
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
Well that just means that they unlocked the bootloader and then relocked it again
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Well, it sounds like the person relocked the phone and wiped all of their data before he sold it. What you describe sounds normal. You could download root checker to see if it's still rooted, but I highly doubt it is. Search these forums for instructions on unlocking and rerooting.

No the bootloader is LOCKED as I was told you could still flash recovery when it's locked. And the stock recovery is from Guru Reset Tool.

Ok.. then unlock bootloader, root the phone, flash stock recovery and lock bootloader using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477792, and then unroot.
Additionally, you can unlock bootloader, flash stock recovery, and then issue fastboot oem lock (this will give you RELOCKED) bootloader. No need to root/unroot..

[Q] Flashing my phone

I was wondering if after using the unlock code on my phone, does that mean that the bootloader is no longer locked and that I can flash recovery? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
What do you mean by unlock code?

NO. Not the same, as stated above. The unlock code is for using any SIM card in that phone. The bootloader is totally different. Your bootloader is still locked. You will need to root the phone then install safestrap if you want custom ROM's.
