Micro usb storage for nexus 10? - Nexus 10 Accessories

Hi there guys. So i saw this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021001 looking for a solution for my nexus 10.
After a bit research i thought why the hell there is no company with a micro usb storage for our tablets and that was enought to start digging with my company to see if we can produce them. It seems it's going well for our project but i was wondering how many people are really interested on this one. We are looking to produce a tiny micro usb storage that will fit niceley with nexus 10 and it can be used 24/7 as storage expantion.
so your turn how many of you would be interested on getting one of these?

This would be cool. As long as it can be used without messing up the Micro USB port and doesn't expose the microsd to breaking also.

This. Also hopefully with a good amount of memory and a discreet design, not like those long thumb drives.

Are you talking microSD cards or flash drives? If flash drives, I asked about this long ago:

yup im talking about a flash drive we are really considering of building. i believe that this would be better than a microsd card reader and definitely more discreet.

Sounds great if it doesn't protrude too much from the port - count me in!

what i want someone to make is a micro usb with a flex ribbon that can mount flush to the device. then the ribbon can wrap around back with a Microsd slot or usb. getting the connector out of the device can be like an ide ribbon in a pc just have a small plastic piece sticking out to pull on.

Definitely interested. It needs to be absolutely tiny though and preferably thin on the edges so your hands would just glide over it instead of hitting it when they go around the display.
Another thing which would be awesome, but I doubt it's possible, is to allow it to act as a us pass through (so it would have a micro usb plug female in there as well, although I'm afraid it would make it too big). This is so that you can connect a data cable to your device and access the extra storage all at the same time.

It is ridiculous we have to jump through these hoops because of el goog's totally irrational and fundamentalist/religious at its core, war on expandable storage in the Nexus line of products (well, my Nexus 1 didn't have that restriction, to be fair).
Anyway, the design would have to be such that the reader somehow "clings" to the body of N10 (and probably, you'd want it to be useable with other devices too) to where it is secure enough and won't fall out from an accidental contact with one's hand etc. The headphone jack is nearby and can not be obstructed. Plugging anything into the microUSB jack would take ability to charge device while in use.
If anyone is in it to make money, it almost feels a better way is to take it "all the way":
- Exynos should have native pins for expandable storage, that are left "hanging" (prolly pulled up/down) OR
- there could be a built-in USB hub on the mobo OR
- one could up with a small f-factor PCB with one
the goal is to manage to modify the case to install 100% functional microSD reader - one that doesn't obscure/use the microUSB plug.
While on it, figure out the charging circuit and provide a barrel plug for 5v/3A charging. There has to be a few hundred N10 owners that would gladly spend $200 to have their N10's modded (and wty's voided). After all, they wuz crazy enough to buy it in the first place
A decent haul for an EE student/enthusiast with a steady hand, a Dremel and a good soldering iron.

I'd make the purchase in a heartbeat :good:!

Can you provide any more info about the profile of the device your considering building? Specifically - the shape, how far it would protrude, etc?
I'd love to see a sketch or two. If you streamline it enough (rounded edges, minimal chance of stressing the micro-usb jack), you'll be able to sell it to a whole lot of phone owners, not just us.

I would absolutely buy one.

I think the demand would clearly be very high for this product. Considering the size of the market of tablet owners looking for OTG cables, etc... I think it would sell extremely well. I, for one, would definitely by one the minute it was available.

This one seems a good idea:

Hi guys,
first i am glad to see that a lot of people are interested not only to support this project but also contribute with ideas. The goal is to create a product that will not get on the way of the user. As i already said i own a nexus 10 and i am working based on my everyday use of the tablet. My first designs are for a really small casing that will fit exactly to the body of our beloved nexus so it wont be able to move by accident. I am going for like 0.5cm width but we cannot at this point be sure for the final products dimensions.
I loved the idea of the flex cord that a user provided above but unfortunately that means loosen connectivity and i believe that it would get in the way of the user. Still it definitely gave my couple of ideas.
rgomesf i am already aware of this product but as a user i believe that in my hands its going to break in a day.
I think that the best approach would be a solid micro-usb unit for the nexus with a small cable-adaptor to connect it to USBs in computers in order to transfer data.
I am always open to more suggestions.

Is this still happening? I am very interested.
And the cable-adaptor could double up as a pass-through to connect another USB device? Or is that pushing the capabilities of the micro-usb port?

If you're tailoring it specifically toward the Nexus 10, perhaps it would be possible to decrease how much it juts out by running along the side? Not in the direction of the headphone port, but upwards near the power button.
Not sure if that's actually possible though.

Case with expansion for more memory

I would love to see a way to get more memory out of this thing. The 8GB isn't quite 6GB in reality and I can't fit all my games(modern combat 3, CS Portable, GTA 3, Asphalt 6 and Real Racing 2).
I have considered getting a thumb drive or something to connect to the micro usb port but then I thought it would be cleaner with a case and possible a SD/micro sd slot instead of just a thumb drive. Would also be nice to see a charging port on the case as well.
If that case existed it would cost at least 50$ so I guess you could sell the one you got now on ebay for the price you got it to a couentry that hasn't the tablet yet and buy the 16gb version.
You just can't go wrong and it's far more convenient.
Get a thin OTG cable, buy a SD card reader (or microSD, depending on which is thinner), plug it into your tablet and find a way to hide the wires into your case. A blurex case or some other big and bulky case may do the work of easily hiding the cable.

This was my thought at first but I doubt mine would be good enough to remove everytime I need to charge up, and that leads to more complications but I have seen the cell phone upgrades for ipod touch's that are built into the case so an SD card reader built into a case the size of a tablet could be done sleekly aside from a hump @ the USB port and maybe a hump at the charging port.
Just figure if I put this information out there it might get picked up and produced for not only the nexus 7, I believe there is a market as memory needs will always grow.

I was originally going to take it back but my mom bought it off of me and for $250 I might as well spend $100 more for a TF300 with 32GB memory, micro sd slot, 8MP decent rear cam, 10" screen and same processor setup with better screen and TV out. The TF300 is thinner feeling and much higher quality IMO.
The SD card slot will also go up to 32GB and I believe there are 64GB SD cards out now for fairly cheap($60) compared to the cost of on board memory. 16GB is just barely enough to run my games and then if I wanted my mp3's or movies for on the go it's 32GB+

I do feel you on your need for space really but the thing I tried to tell you is that those 8gb for 50$ will make your life way easier than expecting manufacturers to do what you want and then pay a lot of green to have that bulky solution.
If you have enough with the 6gb you have left of memory just for apps I'd just root it and get the extra you need for media of the many USB sticks you may have at home. But really if you think your best solution is these type of covers then I hope you will find them soon.

I think it's in everyone's best interest. This gimmick could set a case apart and double it's value with $2 in parts. Hard to beat $10 for 16GB memory stick that ADDS to the 8GB I would have.
As I said, this is really no longer my problem but she wanted me to download videos to it and I noticed it's not even near 8GB of space stock, more like 5.8. So that $50 would get what? 11-12GB? no thanks again.
Not sure about the I/O problems I played with a TF300 at bestbuy and it was holding 60FPS solid in CS Portable while the Nexus 7 hangs around 45-55 and does it looking like crap(washed out, light bleeding, tons of dead pixels) but my mom doesn't care, I did when it came to dishing out another $50 for 11-12GB.
Think I might order one of these for $15 just to have around:
http://usb.brando.com/eagletec-usb-nanosac-micro-sd-card-reader_p00905c031d15.html
It may squeeze between a stretchy case and the back of the tablet. Would like to find a OTG cable that has a Y for charging but I haven't seen one yet. I also just found another possible strike for the Nexus 7:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6061/mhl-and-usbotg-on-the-nexus-7-mounting-usb-storage-not-supported
Seems like they tried to really lock down the memory and restrict the device to streaming. Sounds a lot like an apple thing to do, I mean seriously at this point apple starts sounding competitive again since Android really isn't nearly as plush or refined.

I dunno, my cousin has the TF300 and its nice. I had the original TF100 and loved it. I went with the N7 because of the processor upgrade and 7" form factor. I haven't heard many complaints with the TF300 or newer. The prime seemed to have issues but it was their first tegra3.

I have seen 3 with the problem so far. One custom rom(mine) and two stock roms. All have similar FPS and problems with screen. Light bleed is on everything IMO so yours having none is impossible. The dead pixels aren't dead so much as stuck during certain colors. You need to use a dead pixel tester to really notice, trust me it's there. Edit: seems the bleeding is very common. http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...k-your-nexus-7-tablet-backlight-bleeding.html

I ran through the tests in that post and found no issues at all.
Would love to see something like this, at the moment I'm just relying on a 32GB Cruzer Fit drive. Pretty compact for the size.

All LED backlit devices have light bleed to the point you can see with brightness turned all the way up then look in the corners. I haven't had a LED back lit display on a phone, tablet or TV that didn't have some. Albeit, it's minimal on most phones these days tablets are big enough to display it clearly like "most" nexus 7's, maybe you have a freak. But how do we conclude? I would average out the results and by that point most will agree the nexus 7 has terrible light bleed. Excluding yours of course.
Would love to see a case like this too.

Well, I don't have any stuck or dead pixels but you're right. When I look closely there is a tiny bit of light bleed. Not really noticeable though.
Is it somehow possible to "add" this part inside the original case ? Then wire it and glue it ?
I know the more practical solution is a otg cable and and usb stick or adapter but why not pimping the nexus directly.
I would add a

Why android phones use mini usb

Why does Android phones have to stick with the mini USB? All my phones have been Androids, but after 5 years of use, their mini USB port just starts to decay. It is because the port is cheap and low quality: it is made of single metal stripe. Bought a new phone two months ago and I already feel the connector loosening a bit, it certainly won't last for more than 3 years even though the phone is very durable. I am no an iPhone fan, but hands down this point definitely goes to Apple.

Maybe that's the point... they want you to buy a new phone all the time.
micro USB*
Ports last longer than the cord plugs. I don't disagree there's flaws in the design (mainly reversibility), but at least it's a standard now. It wasn't too long ago where there wasn't a standard. I remember one time a co-worker was given some old Samsung Blackberry-ish phone because his old phone died, but didn't have a charger. We tried 5 different Samsung chargers, and none of them fit.
USB 4.0 will be everything we want it to be...as long as it becomes a truly "universal" standard.
EU require that all phone must have that port to be sell in Europe. Still Apple use Thunderbolt.....

I always get them mixed up, but yeah micro USB. Standardising is a major factor, but I'd rather have a durable phone. It's almost impossible to replace that part since it's usually soldered to the main board, they really want you to buy new phone every 3 years.. Had one of those "wtf is this port"-moments once with an old Nokia, it was worse than Apple's wide dust-vacuum.
Hopefully USB 4.0 will get adapted. I don't think there are any regulations for phone charging ports.

Why ? : mainly because its a standard now and its effective and cheap and safe (remember the FireWire DMA attack)
5 years is a lot of action pretty normal it starts loosening
And the Apple way is no better with only less than 30% market shares just look at the abundance of replacement parts already sold for iPhone 5's it must be for a reason, I was an avid Apple fan for many years and I couldn't believe how brittle they where and how much repair I had to do on theses devices...
It's more like 3 years, my current phone started loosening after 3 months. It is cheap, but not an appropriate component for such a vital role. I am talking about Apple's charging ports only. Apple's products ARE fragile, they're not made for everyday clumsiness. Even though thunderbolts and lightnings are hated by some folks, I would much rather see those standardized than micro-USB or USB 3.0. USB 4.0 is a step to the right direction.

Oh yeah they seem to be pretty easy to replace, I guess my knowledge is based on old models. That made me worry a bit less about breaking my phone. Had to solder one mini-USB once using some uncovered scrap copper wires and it was a hell. Yeah USB2 is the standard, but after 3-7 years we'll might see a change.
I've never had a MicroUSB port (It's Micro, not Mini. MiniUSB is what you find on hard drives and cameras.) decay, not even after 5 years of intensive use...
Yeah the micro-usb port on my S3 is becoming kind of loose now. I used to be able to suspend my phone in the air by holding the charging cable, but now it falls off.

@OP
I've never had one show signs of deterioration either, and the last phone I had was the longest I've had one - just over 2 years. The current one is over 18 months now and is still a perfect fit. That said, I am careful about removing it. I make sure to pull it straight out, with not even a slight angle on it, so there's no reason why it should ever break.
It could be bad luck or carelessness or a bit of both. Just make sure to rule out the latter and you should be fine.
Well, yeah, maybe I swinged it around my head using the cable a few times, but still...

Battery replacement - Battery from Sony Xperia Z2 into my Xperia Z

Hello xda Guys.
I am new and I have a question. Since I have updated my Xperia Z I have problems with my battery time. Before I have done update my battery was very slow too, but now it is horrible. I wanted to replace it four months ago, but I hadn't time. Now my question: Can I place the battery from the Z2 into my Xperia Z, or not?
Thanks Guys for your help
nope, from long distance its look like z2 battery is similar to z, but when you see them those are totally different batteries.
But you can buy bigger battery for z:
http://www.aliexpress.com/store/pro...3_74_75,201560_1&spm=2114.04020208.3.2.umgOBj
my friend have it, he said that its not HUGE difference, but he dont have problem with it at all, and compared to my phone, with new original battery its WAY better,(not as you would expected looking at size but still) especially in heavy games. after day of usage he still have 30-40 when I had to use power bank
Thanks alot for this Information
i live in bangladesh.. can i replace the battery own moblie...plz inform me
Be careful with cheap batteries from China. They tend to exaggerate a *lot*, and are often much worse than OEM batteries. At that price, it is far too good to be true. I can nearly guarantee it will be no better than stock, and possibly fail and overheat easily.
I bought a PolarCell battery from Germany, they are a known quality brand of aftermarket batteries. Rated at 2500mAh, slightly higher than the stock, and it was ~$25 - much more than any other brand, bit they are proven to be high quality. However, it performs identically to my original 2330mAh battery in terms of screen on time (goes flat well before end of the day with heavy use). Instead I got a battery bank case thing, that the phone clips into and it connects to the side dock. Also has a button on the back to turn on/off the battery bank charging mode. Works well, but blocks standard USB port.
Sent from Xperia Z via Tapatalk
Probably 95% of batteries are from China
Rest is maybe from Taiwan or India :]
And yes, you should watch out for some of them, but this one that I posted is actually good, and not only because my friend have it, but because most of reviews are positive about it(not only from aliexpress).
Its not give you huge boots, like you would expect from capacity of it, but its definitely is better(especially standby).
But Everything depend from user
I found out that most of people complaining, use phone a lot, or they have loots of background sync and apps running. And they expected HUGE boots or 12 years standby mode.
Im heavy user, sometimes I think that Im only person that use phone to work(rest people use it as for media consumption) and even if I recently put new original battery I still cant manage full day of usage, and Im a bit mad because I could buy this bigger one.
PS. I have case with wireless charging I wanted the same as CosmicDan but phone is WAY to big with it. I dont use it now(I actually hate phone cases) But its pretty cool and actually fast charging. but small movement and it stops so it was annoying as hell. I bought it mostly for night charging, but its turn out that Docking station is just better...

Yes of course most things are manufactured on China, but the old adage "you get what you pay for" shouldn't be forgotten. I'd personally never trust a $10 battery that claims to have 1000mAh higher than every other, $20 battery. Standby is not a problem, can last for days on standby with original battery. SoT with adaptive brightness and regular use is what matters - unless you yourself have this battery and can personally say it lasts more than a day with heavy use, and doesn't develop a memory effect after 6 months, then I guess it is good. But some people prefer to be safe than sorry. I used to repair phones as a technician and 90% of aftermarket batteries out there are complete garbage, that's all I'm saying.
Wireless charging? How does that work, the Z doesn't have wireless charging capability? And it's not that thick, only adds another 0.8mm to thickness. You get used to it after a while, and it has enough juice to fully charge the battery with a bit to spare.

Well, yeah, but many time I bought something from original shop, that is original new, and it was not cheap, and it had good opinion from forum users... and it was crap like hell.
Especially headphones. I'm crazy about headphone.. And those are not typical headphones for show off like most people use them today. I actually never use headphones in public(cant focus...).
And I bough many Sony headphones, Koss, JVC, AKG... aaaaand few times I bought Sennheiser because people say that they are good, and amazing etc etc... and those after Beats are really bad... even compared to JVC from HA series(best quality/price ratio)
So just because something is expensive it doesnt mean its better :]
And about wireless charging. you can buy something like that:

But instead of microUSB you have small pins that are on side of case that connect to phone, just like most of cases for XZ that have powerbank.
I cant make picture of it(im not in home) but later I'll try find email with ebay link to buy one.

That's fair enough. Many brands claim to be genuine but are fake, indeed. But if the one you shared is clearly stated as non-genuine and has good reviews, than fair enough - I'm sure it's OK.
Headphones are such a flooded market, I bought an $80 pair once and they had terrible low range response. My $20 Samsung pair were so much better.
That's a pretty cool wireless charging thing, never seen them before. But do you keep it always connected and just have it stuck to the back with tape? [emoji14] the plug could also be damaged, so I would not use it for those reasons. But that's just me, still a cool accessory.
But if they combined the case design (like the one I shared) with a wireless charging thing, so it would be much thinner + connect to side dock and keep USB free, that would be cool!
EDIT: Sorry, didn't see what you said below - so it *does* connect to the dock on the side, nice!
I am planning on a new phone this Christmas, myself, so I am probably done with gadgets for the Z myself. Either the Xperia C5 Ultra (I miss my old phablet, its pretty cheap and will get Android 6.0 update too) or the BlackBerry Priv. But I digress.

Ha-ha for sure, it is beautiful and I loved the Qwerty keyboard on my old Nokia E63. But I'm worried about the price, C5 Ultra us only $500 AU brand new (which is maybe $420 USD I think). It's a mid range device, I only want big screen so I can type better like I used to. But keyboard much better. Priv surely has flagship specs, but I'm expecting it to be over $1000 AU - not sure I can afford that! But we will see
So... Batteries? Off topic Lol.... [emoji14]

Headphone Jack is very likely, SD Card slot is possible

The title says it all, but I will explain some of the background for this.
As some of you may know OnePlus, Oppo, and Vivo are all owned by the same firm under the name of BBK Electronics. And in the past there have been close similarities between OnePlus and Oppo devices. Take Dash Charging being a OnePlus rebrand of Oppo's VOOC Charging as an example.
This time around OnePlus has taking the design out of Oppo's book. The recently unveiled Oppo R11 looks strikingly similar to the OnePlus 5, take a look:

As you can see the similarities are very clear, even down to the antennae lines.
So sure, they look alike but we all know their specs will be different in terms of processing. Obviously the OP5 will boast the Snapdragon 835 and supposedly 8GB of RAM. Far different than the R11's spec sheet. But a few key details on the R11's spec sheet raise some questions on whether or not they will carry over to the OP5.
http://www.gsmarena.com/oppo_r11_plus-8719.php
Taking a look at the spec sheet we find a few details that are most interesting. The first, is that the screen is still 1080p, the second, a headphone jack is included, and the third is the most interesting of them all: SD card slot.
While I am aware this is a simple internal change to add or remove an SD card slot from a design standpoint, is this an indication that OnePlus may finally give us an SD Card slot again?
Only time will tell.
Going back to the topic of headphone jacks, the R11 has one and I really don't see OnePlus dropping it either since they have gone out and poked fun at Apple for their decision. It would be silly to mock a competitor for something they removed then remove it yourself. Just food for thought.
What do you all think? Will OnePlus really give us a SD Card slot?
I'd really love to get the sd card slot.
That plus the extra increased resolution could be worth the buy by itself for me.
It sounds like the headphone jack will be on the top if it's included. Carl Pei did that poll on twitter and the response was overwhelmingly "WANT WANT WANT" for a headphone jack. In the photos it doesn't seem to be on the bottom so it has to be on the top.. if I remember right, some rumors suggested that too on Weibo or elsewhere.

Some of those tweets were in reference to an alleged design that isn't the one that was revealed officially. For a side note, the R11 has a headphone jack on the bottom and we have already seen the top of the OP5 without a headphone jack. Look at OnePlus' header on twitter for example.

Actually, if you take a look at the official "leaked" picture on the @Oneplus Twitter account, you can clearly see that there is no jack at the top, so if there is one and the picture is real, it has to be at the bottom where it belongs...

I miss having the jack on the bottom, so much better for putting in my pocket with headphone in.
They took their time to add all this triangle shape noise on the bottom of the device on their previous leak so you couldn't see anything clearly, apart from the power button if editing it.
I guess the jack is there, on the bottom. They are hyping a lot about it. Maybe it crossed the road from the right to the left bottom of the phone.
That's my wild guess...

Thanks, I hadn't seen those latest ones yet!
I would like the mSD reader in an dual SIM holder as I'd likely buy the 64GB version of this phone assuming that the price difference between the 64GB and 128GB versions was at least double that of a 64GB mSD. If the headphone jack is dropped it will take stronger reviews to sway me to buy.
I already have high quality headphones so I definitely don't want inferior bluetooth audio. I'll put up with only having a FHD OLED display but would prefer QHD but if it's down to better battery life I'd accept FHD on a 5.5" screen. My current Nexus 5 IPS screen still looks very good for my day to day use, obviously no VR though.

I would say that previous Oppo phones bearing a resemblance to the OP flagships also had microSD slots, and that did not carry over to OP. So I wouldn't hold my breath on the microSD Slot though I certainly hope they decide to include one anyways. I doubt it as they'd want people to buy the higher storage model as well.
The "Why did the headphone jack cross the road?" Tweet by Carl Pei could also mean the headphone jack is on the other side of the Bottom USB port and not across the screen on the top.

I hope my reply is relevant to this thread.
When they actually implement a microSD slot to the OP5, I hope it is separate from the dual SIM slots.
My main concern is over the main storage technology, it should be UFS 2.1, then it will be snappy. No point providing such a huge storage like 256GB at the expense of performance.

It will almost certainly be UFS 2.1. If they include microSD then it will not be separate. Having one in the first place would be great.

Ah so that's what they meant by crossing the road
Hello
I've seen a spec sheet for op5 but It could be fake would you like to c it or should I leave it for the anticipation aspect?
I hope it will be 1080p because of battery life, QHD is nice and all but doesnt have any real advantage in normal use.
The SDcard slot - no. I had so much SDcards die with my data on it that even though I have a phone with it, I don't use an SDcard. They werent some cheap Chinese copies, they were SanDisk/Toshiba/Samsung.
Headphone jack - I don't really think they will shoot themselves in the foot by removing it. Besides, who will buy the Bullets then?
I really hope it has an SD card slot. IR would be nice too, but very unlikely. I don't care as much about the headphone jack as I am happy with my old Bluetooth earbuds, but I would rather have it than not.
I hope there is an SDCard Slot plus Dual Sim standy . Thats one of the prime factors i tick when buying a smartphone, and seriously why would they skip the head phone jack

Question Should i buy the Tab S8?

Dear XDA community I am very tempted to buy the tab s8 but i may need your help to understand whether this device is for me.
I bought a Tab S 8.4 waaaaay back in 2014 and I have been using it happily ever since. Before buying a tablet i thought that tablets were mostly productive devices rather than glorified phones with a bad camera. The tab s was an amazing device for what it was (especially at 350€) but i quickly found out that it couldn't do most things that I wanted it to do.
It couldn't be truly used to write documents due to the castrated mobile office apps
It couldn't be used for true multitasking (multi window worked only for selected special apps which most of the time where not the one I used)
External monitors could go only up to 1080p 30Hz and had way worse colors and i couldn't charge my device while displaying something on a TV
There is no concept of "running apps" infact every app except for the one i was using was just closed after a while, it has happened to me to actually loose edits on documents or comments.
Laggy alt tab and more in general laggy UI (yes even when it was new. In fact I'm quite sure it's more responsive now without all the Samsung bloats)
Instant throttling due to extremely poor thermal solution
Updated only twice and each update gave me worse and worse performance.
Now the reason why I didn't upgrade so far is because tablets just didn't inspire fun anymore. I tried iPads but they were not even capable of coping some files in background without errors. Windows tablets unfortunately have just eighter bad performance or impossible prices (really you could spend 3000+€ on a flimsy quad-core just to have as little as 16gb of ram, which truly i the minimum for windows). Chrome os tablets just don't exist, most have 4gb of ram and the ones with a decent build qualty like the HP x2 have massively under-powered internals. This is a shame because they are now supported for 8 years and i really value long term support. Then i took a look back at android and saw a graveyard of devices built to be trashed after one year and never updated.... except for one that suffered from chronic underfuned development: the tab S. Even that though was not as impressive as the original version. It had barely more ram, extremely inflated price, still no decent apps.
Now i wonder has all of this changed for the Tab S8?
I write less documents so may be able to withstand a crappy office suite.
8gb of ram finally a decent size although the phone i have in my pocket already has 8gb of ram and i bought it 6 years ago so i wonder if that little amount of ram will doom the tab S8 to be trashed in a couple of years.
External monitors seems to be decently handled by dex but I've read that it supports only 1440p60....... which seems strange because 4k monitors are very cheap..... like I litterally bought mine for 250€ to replace an old 1280x1024p75 and the difference is amazing. That alone if it is true is a reason to not buy the tab. I don't pretend to do video editing on it but device that costs as much as a semi decent laptop and cannot fulfill basic computer tasks like browsing on a big screen would be a no go. Also it is not clear whether dex supports window snapping, fast alt tab, and persistent applications that don't close without my permission.
Is the UI still bloated? I've read some reviews that when switching from one app to the other the animation can drop a lot of frames and the alt tab stutters. I was really hoping that after so many years that would not be even thought to be possible anymore.
Also about throttling: i've read that samsung gave up on not making it throttle so they under-clocked it to keep the thermals within a controlled range.
For what concerns the 4 years of support i wonder: does that mean true support and updates or i will receive updates 9-10 months later than google devices with a final bloated update that cripples the device?
NO HEADPHONE JACK? really? on a device that is supposed to be productive?
16/9 aspect ratio..... so they put a screen to watch cat videos on a 700-1200€ product....it makes me wonder why not a more normal 3/2 or 4/3.
Also it seems that if i want a screen that is not worse than the one i already have in my very old tablet I need to pay 200€ more and have a bigger device that is heavier and less confortable to hold. Also i've seen online that when you activate the night mode on the TFT display the colors become way worse.
One thing that really interests me is the S pen.
The idea of properly taking notes and drawing on a device like this puts me in a position where I am very willing to try and see how the experience of using it is.
Are there some decent drawing apps? Paid ones as well as long as it is a one time payment and not a lifelong rental.
Do you know if there are some programs that recognize hand writing to transform it to computer words?
Guys sorry if I am criticizing a bit. I really don't want to offend anyone. I was just looking for some help to select a decent device. Thank you, i hope you understand.
Hello! use S8 ultra.Everybody think is the best tablet.
Well s8 ultra is really good, I own one and I can even run desktop mode of dex straight onto my s8 ultra. Without needing tv or so.
Also screen is biggest one ever as a OLED one. Next I like is that it's smooth and hardly lags for me at all.
I use the Tab S8+ as an upgrade over my Tab S4 from a few years ago and I'm just saying that I'm never looking back. The bigger screen is amazing for media consumption, drawing, editing (whether it's photo or video), multitasking, etc. I don't output to a monitor or TV very often, but if I do, the experience is pretty good. Dex has come a long way over the past couple of generations and device revisions and is almost good enough to be a laptop replacement (for some, not for all though). I'd only recommend the Ultra if you SERIOUSLY need double the ram, a bigger screen ( 2.2" bigger than the S8+, 3.6" bigger than the S8), and the second forward-facing camera. The performance is practically the same for all three Tab S8s, the only difference being the size, cameras, and ram. 8GB is enough for most people, but if you genuinely need more, then I'd spring for the S8U, but if not, then either the S8 or S8+ is perfectly fine. I chose the S8+ for the bigger, more vibrant, super AMOLED screen. After daily driving a device with an OLED screen, I can't go back to LCD, but I've heard the TFT LCD on the S8 is pretty good for being an LCD. You do miss those deeper blacks and some color fidelity though.
Edit: I thought I should answer a few of your questions and address some of your concerns.
- The UI is still pretty bloated (especially if you have an S8 with 5G capabilities like Verizon), but it's a lot more manageable than before. You can disable a lot of apps that you don't plan on using, as well as uninstalling their updates, not allowing them to change system permission or have any permissions at that, or even straight-up hide them from the app drawer if you're using the OneUI Home launcher. You can even remove them via ADB commands if you hook your tablet to a PC as long as you input the right commands.
- The aspect ratio of all Tab S8s is 16:10, not 16:9. The tablets are a little wider to account for that. As a result, it's not going to cover the entire screen when outputting to an external display, and yes, it'll only be at 60hz.
- The Tab S8 line will continue to receive software updates for the next five years (until 2027), so we will probably get the next two or maybe three next versions of Android, as well as semi-frequent security updates and patches. We'll be up to date for quite a while, at least until the next Tab line comes out.
- Not having a headphone jack is one of the main reasons why I didn't spring for the Tab S6 line back in 2020, but times have changed and now I've found pretty reliable alternatives to continue using wired headphones, use the mic attached to those headphones for calls and audio recordings, and to charge at the same time. I'll use the ANKER USB-C Hub mainly for displaying to an external display, but I did use it for simultaneous wired headphones and charging until I got the Stouchi USB-C 3.5mm Headphone and Charging Adapter. This dongle has served me well for some months now and while it can give me some occasional charging issues (mainly due to my poor positioning), it's a quite durable and serviceable dongle. Not to mention that if you ever have issues with it, customer support responds via email very quickly, and has a quite friendly staff team that'll help you out.
- The tablets really aren't as large and unwieldy as many people try and make them out to be. Maybe it's just because I have big hands or have no problem carrying reasonably heavy things, but it's genuinely not that bad. With the specs that are in these newer tablets, I'm surprised that they're not heavier. The S8+ is 1.25 lbs (around 0.6 kg) and is quite thin and quite lighter than it should be given what's inside and how well they perform. Adding the cover case included with the official keyboard for these tablets (not the slim one, as those are one piece as opposed to being made of a magnetic back cover with an S-Pen cover and a keyboard attachment) does add a bit of weight to it, but not enough to cause any sort of strain.
- I use Sketchbook for drawing, but I've been recommended Medibang quite a few times since it has a lot more creative tools that you can use. Both are free as far as I know.
- Samsung Notes has a feature where it can turn words you've written down with the S-Pen into regular text. I believe there's also an S-Pen related app that you can use in its little sub-menu (when you press the button on the S-Pen close to the screen), but if there is, I don't use it very often. I just stick to Samsung Notes since it seems like a dedicated app for exactly this purpose. You can even backup notes you've made to the cloud if you log in to your Samsung account. Quite the handy application if I do say so myself.
It may be a lot to read, but I hope I helped you in your decision a little bit. These are some pretty great (if a little pricy) devices, and any of them would be a great upgrade over your previous (or I suppose current) Samsung tablet.
Also another thing I want to add is that s8 ultra is durable. Since jerryrigeverything did a durability test and even he failed to snap the s8 ultra in half. Like he could with first Ipad pro gen 1 when it was first biggest tablet on the marked.
The Ipad pro broke in half like paper, but when he tried to do same with s8 ultra 14.6 inch he couldn't bend it at all, even if he took all his strength. Yet it wouldn't bend and he was impressed on samsung on managing to build a 14.6 inch tablet that is impossible to bend. He was expecting some bend or breaks on first tablet that big.
Ops double posted my bad.
Was trying to edit post above and for some reason it went double post.

FYI, I think both your links are borked somehow. Thanks for all the info, though!
Massive thanks to all of you for your replies, especially to @SavXL for the detailed reply.
In the end I decided to give it a try and see what happens.
I choose the 10.4'' size because it is definetly a bump in dimensions and weight compared to the 8.4 i was using. The main bummer is that the screen is a literal downgrade from the one i was using before. Still as you said for an LCD is not bad at all and the colors are decent. It is however true what it was told online in a couple of other places: "turning on the blue light filter totally destroys the screen"... such thing would not happen with an oled.
I went with more storage and with the keyboard cover because there was a 50% discount on both the upgrade and the keyboard. What can I say, the device feels solid however I was worried to scratch the lens without the cover as it is literally rubbing on every surface without a cover. The keyboard is surprisingly nice to type on for what it is, keep in mind that still if used as a desktop attached to a monitor it makes sense to have a 20€ membrane or 60€ mechanical keyboard at least. The difference with the official tablet keyboard is massive. The track-pad is just trash. unfortunately there is no better way to put it. A thinkpad or dell from 2007 will have a better track-pad. With a bluetooth mouse and the touchscreen thankfully the trackpad can be ignored. The software keyboard improved a lot to the point where for now I'm not replacing it with my normal "Swiftkey".
The pen is surprisingly natural to use and surprisingly.... small. It is strange to say because it seems massive from the pictures. But I've noticed it slips while writing a bit more than a normal pen. Maybe i find a "case" for it that increases the diameter and grip but still fits in the space dedicated in the cover. Pen gestures in the air are just a meme so I will not talk about them. Still it is a joy to use.
I didn't try dex in a real way so maybe I write an additional message in the next weeks after I thoroughly try it. For that I will source an adapter and try it on a 4k monitor, I really hope the tab S8 has improved resolution handling..... being limited to HDMI1.4 bandwith in 2022 will not be funny. For what concerns the multi window the limit went from 4 of the original tab S to 3 of the S8 ...... now I get that we have a small screen and it may be stupid to use more than a couple of applications in parallel... but I would like to be the one deciding that on my device. One major annoyance with the split screen support is that when resizing windows the content blurs... hopefully I can find a way to disable that crap because it truly slows down the interaction with the device. In general the multi window behaviour improved a lot, but the way i interact with windows is still strange as if we were still in the windows 3.1 days where we hadn't figured out a way to properly grab windows, resize them, move them, snap them. This awkwardness is a lot reduced by enabling the multiwindow line even on full screeen windows. That helps to feel the environment less forced.
Speaking of slowdowns: I was shocked that after 8 freaking years Samsung didn't manage to have a fluent interface. Don't get me wrong it is mostly fluent but full of small hiccups that I may accept on a cheap underpowered device but not at this price range. There is a lot of preinstalled bloarware, most of it can be removed or disabled so for now I'm accepting it.... after I get more confident with the device I will definetly debloat it.
Alt tab between the last 2 applications takes ages. It takes literally seconds. By disabling all the animations in the developer options the situation becomes a lot better but still the point is that the alt tab works correctly when you want to alt tab between several applications but not when you want to alternate between the last 2. Try on your normal computer. You shouldn't see the list of applications when quickly alt tabbing. If you see that, it then becomes distracting and slows the workflow because then you need a couple seconds more to focus on what you were doing in that app. Continuing with the alt tab I have to find a way to make the recents smaller and/or vertical and/or fit all in the screen. I have no use for big previews that show the content of the app. I opened that app, I am already aware of what I am doing with it. Another problem with the alt tab is that there is no text. If i have 2 documents that look very similar to one another you can bet that they have a different name so I'd rather be able to identify them at a glance rather than squeeze my eyes and play "spot the differences".
The sidebar to quickly open applications in split or floating mode is very handy. I have to use it more to get used to it but for now i can say that i wished the icons were smaller, that there was more compact content, and less "pages". If it takes me more than a couple of seconds to scroll through the pages then I might just as well go to the home screen and do there what I wanted to do. Maybe there is a way to customize it more than what I noticed so far. This seems very much a phone app ported to a tablet rather than a proper tablet app.
I was almost forgetting the fingerpint. It's fast. I'm glad I chose the smaller device for that as well. Under-screen sensors in the past have been slow, though I don't know how much they improved in the past couple of years.
Video calls are great. The front facing camera has a decent contrast and dynamic range, obviously better than windows devices that cost twice as much. It is also positioned as close to my eyelevel as it can be on a small device. I have yet to try the microphone in a proper way but considering I didn't have to raise my voice too much to be heard on the other side it seems good.
On the software side I'm happy. I had a couple of issues with skype where i cannot move the automatic floating window that appears when I go home during a call, dropbox decided to limit me to 3 devices all of a sudden so I will just use google drive from now on. I've downloaded a bunch of drawing apps including the ones suggested by SavXL. so far so good.
In conclusions: Is this device worth it? Yes if you use the pen. Everything else on this device is excellent but not unique. Otherwise If you have a decent phone you could just grab a cheap lapdock or tabdock and you will have an amazing experience. If you want more proper windows or a more proper browsing experience you can grab a chromebook. It will still have the same hikkups in the interface but at least is because you saved some money. What makes this tablet unique is the pen, which is amazing.
Just as a comparison: A modern wacom pen on the left vs the S-Pen on the right. I can assure you that the diameter difference makes it slip more.

It's ironic since I only had one S-Pen before - from the Note 10+, so when I bought the Tab S8 Ultra as my first Samsung tablet, I was surprised it was that big, but what you say definitely makes sense. I would be afraid that putting anything around it semi-permanently would interfere with either the magnetic sticking to the back of the Tab and/or the wireless charging of the S-Pen.
Also with at least the Ultra's Keyboard Cover, it might not allow fully closing the top-hinged portion of the back cover where the S-Pen is.
Of course, an easily removable solution would beat these concerns.

I've been meaning to ask this question: What do people use the pen for? No real guidance in the manual. All I've done with it is keep it charged.

I haven't fooled with the Tab S8 Ultra's S-Pen much yet, just experimented with both Samsung's and Google's implementation of handwriting to text conversion. On my Note 10+ which got rid of, I would occasionally sketch out rough ideas for building things or rearranging furniture, etc. I rarely play games but with some games, the S-Pen came in handy as well.
My wife plans on using handwriting to text conversion.
Edit: I'd like to add that from research I've done in the past, Samsung owns patents on several aspects of their styluses which prevent other styluses from being quite as good.

Personally I think that literally any function other than the pen can be done by another device better than an android tablet (chromebooks have a real browser, phones are always in your pocket and have good cameras, computers have real applications to do real work) but if you want to paint, sketch, and take notes you don't really have any other option aside from the tab S line and the iPads.
The Remakable is wonderful to take notes but you cannot paint on it. Wacom tablets are amazing to paint but are to do creative work at home with a computer, it would be cumbersome to use them in a park.
If you are in classes or in a meeting and want to take notes but then also be able to sketch something on your free time in a park or cafè then a tablet is a must have.
Personally im not an artist but I'm having tons of fun with medibang paint, ibis paint, sketchbook, and other apps. When i become a bit better at drawing I will invest in Clip Studio Paint.
I wish there was something like premiere rush but for davinci resolve available for our tab s8. Starting my video editing on the tablet with dex to then finish it on a real computer would be amazing. I would hands down pay for that app instead if being forced to rent the adobe suite. If it existed I would be forced to use my pc 10 times less.
