Got my 32G+HPSA Nexus7 yesterday and boy was I disappointed: it feels
like a cheap piece of plastic compared to my Galaxy Tab 7.7.
Problems:
- thicker than my 1-year old gtab 7.7
- huge bezel, small screen: lots of wasted real-estate, an 8" screen
could easily have been fitted in that case
- no forward-facing camera
- no phone function (I knew that, but still, how much would it cost to
add it, and really convenient when travelling to put a 'local' SIM)
- bad screen, washed out colors, nowhere near the crispness and quality
of a Gtab 7.7
I will keep it though for my kids, but it's a let down.
If you don't like it then return it. Simple as that.

And by the way... There are 3g models of the n7 !
I'll think this are trolling post and gonna star reporting them... If you think the tab is better than the n7 and wanna start a thread about it, do it so in the tab section, not in n7's

Hey,
nexus 7 has front camera and as you've bought the hspa+ version it supports 3g.
BS.
A quad core, pure Android, Google flagship, cheap as hell tab is worse than some dual core, laggy as hell, plasticky Sammy tab ? Not to mention receiving timely updates from Google as well as running pure Android (probably 4.2 at this point) out of the box while the 7.7" is probably stuck on HC/ICS ??? People like you amaze me .
1. 3G version = Calls are possible, but requires some work done on your part, which judging by your attitude, seems as good of an idea as just doing nothing.
2. Huge bezel = Ideal for holding, especially when reading.
3. Washed out colours = I agree but honestly, are you going to use the tab or just put some flowery wallpaper and show everyone "Oooooo loook how crisp my display is !" for brag rights ? I have a One X so I know the feeling, but I want to use the tab, not stare and judge how beautiful and crisp the colors are.
4. No front facing camera = I think you meant rear. And seriously, do you people realise how stupid taking pics with a tab makes you look ?
Honestly, this is how stupid taking pics with a tab makes you look like

If they put an 8" display on it, it wouldn't be a 7 inch tablet... that's kinda the point isn't it? Also the N7 has a smaller screen with greater dpi, so there's no way it's not as crisp or crisper.
And I'll say it again, if you put anything else next to Super Amoled, you are going to complain about it. It's a fact of life.

A lot of BS. Of course, some things are better on it but guess what. I checked its price and it still costs 350 for Wi-Fi only version. Sorry, but that's a little too much for me to pay for a tab with outdated SoC, stuck on ICS forever and no fully bug free custom ROM because of lack of Exynos support. If it would have been 150 I might have thougt about it.

Once I saw the I/O Dev Version of the Nexus 7 I was surprised how much better it--and less iPadesque-- looks with the Black part sounding the Bezel instead of the Silver. I'm not a fan of the white though. I would have loved an all Black Nexus 7. It makes be wonder why they went with the silver in the first place.
I don't think there's ANYTHING "iPadesque" about the Nexus 7, either variation, any more than a Ferrari is "Corvette-esque" because it's kind of a wedge shape with four wheels and a roofline.

Gloss black Bezel with a silver border and rounded corners and a rectangular shape. Is definitely iPadesque, anyone one that takes an unbiased look can see that. I am not an Apple fan in the least by the way. I just hate how some many products from other companies are imitating them looks wise. I don't even like how the iProducts look personally and Asus made many product that look original, and the back of the Nexus 7 does look original and appealing to my eyes, but the front is iPadesque.
No you example isn't valid. I would would say a Firebird from the 80s while compared to a Corvette from the same period would be Corvette-esque though.
is the consumer product in both colours?

Some things just make sense and can't be claimed by anyone. Fans are often round because, well, that's the shape that things make when they spin. Cars are wedge shaped because, at the time, that's the most aerodynamic known shape. Bezels are black (on tablets and TVs) because that works best with the most content being displayed. Tablets are rectangular because the screens are rectangular (duh!).
Apple can't claim ownership or even creative origination of any of these characteristics. Each and every aspect was either obvious, a virtual requirement (i.e., rectangular screens), or borrowed from some other product. And my iPad doesn't have a silver border, so not sure what you're referring to there.
Apple chose to make a minimalist design, which means minimum ornamentation and just what logically flows from what the device does. Claiming ownership of that is like claiming ownership of a negative--they're saying, in effect, you have to do what we didn't do, that is, we didn't add anything to the most basic possible design, and so you have to. That makes no sense to me.
Not to mention, you're focusing on the very front of the device, which is also deceiving. There's also the sides and back to consider, which are nothing like the iPad by virtue of actually having some ornamentation. Apple made the same silly argument with the Galaxy Tab, and unfortunately the idiot judge myopically bought it.

Also, your Firebird v. Corvette example is a bad one. Yes, they're very alike, and not just because they're wedge-shaped--they share many common design cues. But they were also both made by General Motors, and probably by the same design teams.

I didn't say Apple owned anything, though they seem to think so. Just that they look similar from the front. Don't go all fan boy on me, man. There is no need. I dislike Apple, I just think companies are copying the look, thinking that what costumers want because they are so successful in the tablet market. I specifically don't want that and get a bit frustrated every time a android product come out that takes design queues from apple. My main phone is a G2 and I love it. It looks like nothing but itself. And hell yeah Samsung was copying Apple, but I don't think they violated any laws in doing so.

This is correct. The Nexus 7's similarities to the iPad are only the front, and even then they aren't too similar. The sides and back are completely different, and IMO look nicer than the iPad.
The only way you could say the iPad and the Nexus 7 look the same is because it's black, has a camera on the top instead of on the side, and the ones given out at I/O have the white back which looks a little simular to the silver on the iPad.
That is certainly enough for Apple to claim patent violation on.
First off how whould you say it looks the same? The nexus 7 has a larger brezel on it then the ipad and next off the camera smaller and has no physical buttons like the ipad. There also made of different materials no aluminum in the nexus 7 and the back has a rubberized finish. Also its a heck alot easier to fix then a ipad is and the software is much different and you can't really change a screen to look much different.
kinda off topic but is there one like this for the galaxy nexus? like a dev version? if so, link please.

Um, no. They'd have to have already filed a patent application, or the Nexus and every other 7" tablet would clearly be prior art. You're forgetting the the Nexus is shipping before any 7" iPad has even been announced. And certainly they can't claim that a 7" tablet violates the design patent on their 10" tablet. That would be ludicrous, even for today's broken system.

Seriously? How did this mutate into another Apple patent thread?
I agree with the OP, I wish the consumer model had the black rim the I/O version does. I've never liked the silver rim on any tablet device. I'd love to have an I/O tablet and replace the back with a consumer black rear cover.

First, that's not a Samsung Galaxy NOTE stylus. That's a Samsung Galaxy Tab stylus which is an entirely different technology. The Note's stylus is an active stylus capable of things like pressure sensitive writing with a fine tip (as opposed to the other sausage-tipped styli that just pretend they're your finger).
As far as the difference between the ones you point out go.... performance varies from person to person and device to device, so you've really just got to try some and see if they work well with the Nexus and your particular writing style. Just make sure that the tip is firm enough that the body of the pen can't hit the screen while you write.
And if you're hoping that writing with any capacitive stylus will be just like writing with a real pen....then neither of them will be good for you since they can't handle that type of precision (you usually need to write large letters that programs shrink down). The type of styli used with the Galaxy Note are the only ones that can actually handle this, but there aren't any for use with the Nexus.
I'm using the Kensington Virtuoso Touch, there are a couple of threads on this forum giving links to reviews of various styluses that tell you why the better ones are 'better'.
I'm using these (In the picture) with my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 which both have xtreme guard screen protectors on them. They work perfectly. They aren't pressure sensitive or anything extravagant like that, but they write well and draw well. That's what I was looking for. I like that I can lose them and it doesn't matter since they are dirt cheap.
I purchased these in an 8 pack. 4 Large and 4 small for my phone. They are all identical in build quality which is good. Made out of aluminum.
I also own a few other stylus (Bamboo, Cosmonaut) which are good but compared to price/performance for me, these are the best I've used.

Im using one I got from the pound shop its brilliant..
Yea don't waste your money on a stylus outside of a few bucks. I almost purchased a $20 stylus at Microcenter then while checking out, they had the exact same one for $3. I tested both and both felt the same.
Outside of acting like I can draw anything good on a tablet (or on paper for that matter) they are a fad. I also don't take notes with a pen.
Just invest money in a good keyboard from the market and practice thumb typing. Or buy a little Bluetooth thumb keyboard off eBay for $5 which also doubles as a handy gamepad for emulators.
Capacitive screens just aren't good for fine tuned motor skills required for writing. The tablets that have pens like the Note use a combination of technologies that let it be much more precise.
I also think the pens come separate and cost a good chunck of change (~$50?). The HTC Flyer does it that way. I just can't see writing with a stylus on a 5" screen.

to be honest, they are almost the same, i emailed amazon back and want to return the stylus, told them that it felt no different than the 1 dollar one my buddy got, they told me to keep it and will give me my money back, i told the csr that it won't be necessary and they issued the credit anyway
i don't recommend anyone doing this with the intention of asking amazon for a refund but they did do the right thing for me

- Made Entirely from Recycled Materials
- Totally customizable
- Holds case firmly
- Elastic Strap holds firm
- Internal pocket for storage
- Buttons mostly accessible
The Bad:
- Made Entirely from Recycled Materials
- Adds a surprising bit of bulk (far less than the Blurex, but more than the Belkin)
- The Design Process vs. final product (more on that in a bit)
- Not a smart cover
The Unknown:
- Durability
Review:
I love the XDA forums around the time of a device launch. Yeah, you get an influx of short term users and forum complaints, but the place overall reflects the unadulterated joy of geek-fanboy-ism in a primarily positive way. Moreso than most of the internet.
As we all watched accessories roll in, I decided this would be the "pricier" case I decided to take the plunge on in hopes it would be my "final" case. I am an obsessive customizer/tinkerer, so it was a pretty easy decision. I decided on a pretty simple design that I thought would compliment my overall device theme (at least for the time being).
This is largely where my biggest complaint comes in, which I think is demonstrated by the screenshot below:
It is important to note that I chose to have the order altered to incorporate the black strap (as opposed to the white), however the overall base color is simply not similar. I didn't agonize over the design, and used stock background as opposed to a provided image file, so I definitely did not take full advantage of the customization - but still feel the colors don't match up particularly well.
That said, the print is high quality (especially given that all the imagery I provided had a fair degree of transparency to it, I wasn't sure it would turn out the greatest), the sturdy feeling recycled neoprene has a nice worn texture to it, and in general I still think it is an incredibly attractive case.
The fill seems to be some sort of either recycled cardboard, pressboard, or plastic. It does flex easily, but doesn't feel bent easily (if that makes sense). Overall, this is an area where only time will tell, but I'd say I'm leaning on the optimistic side. It certainly does not feel as though it's about to fall apart, and the stitching on the neoprene is absolutely top of the line. Incredibly well done.
The lack of smart cover functionality is a bit disappointing, however, I had no expectation it would have one when I ordered it. There was no mention of it on the site, anywhere, and I did not choose to clarify. I had purchased the Blurex smart case immediately on ordering my N7, and when I ordered this case decided if necessary, I would do a bit of surgery with an exacto knife to extract the magnet. I will update this thread with my success to this end, but it is certainly encouraging to have the pocket sewn inside already, as I'm fairly certain it will be simple to stitch the magnet into this case.
tl;dr aka Final Thoughts:
At $40, this was not necessarily a cheap case, but in my opinion very reasonably priced. Turnaround time was definitely satisfactory, and my interactions with their customer service department were very prompt and courteous. It holds very comfortably in the hand.
While it would be foolish to estimate how it will wear over time, I feel like it's going to hold up just fine for my use.
Looks nice! For $40 that didn't sport a smart cover/magnet option....kinda suXors IMO
But I do like the look and it doesn't look very bulky at all. I'd be on the fence on this one but because of the lack of the smart cover, that would be a pass on my book. But I know some who don't like the smart cover option, this may appeal to them.

In reality, it's not that bulky - I just feel like adding any bulk to sleeker devices like this kind of ruins the form factor - so it's not just this case, I struggle with almost all of them.
The smart cover will likely be a deal breaker for a lot of people. My advice to anyone considering ordering one of these is simply to contact them and see if they have any plans on implementing the magnet in future designs. They replied to my email within 24 hours, were very courteous, and I imagine it's something they more than likely do plan on implementing. I'm just an early adopter
And I don't mind hacking my own together. We've got a sewing machine, fabric, and a magnet already - why not?

True, that's an option, but I prefer the reliability of a hardware solution, particularly when I already have the hardware.
I know someone who used to work at Caseable. I got a free custom Touchpad case (technically iPad case, but it fits the same) because of it. Never used it though. As much as I liked my custom design, it wasn't really a 'case'. Just a book-like cover, and a strap in each corner to secure it. I'd rather have something that snaps onto the back of the device like most cases.
I am waiting for mine to arrive, I thought the corners were rounded? It looks nothing like in the pictures on their site!

Looks pretty close to me?
Yeah it does there... When I ordered mine there were different pictures in that spot, showing a blue and orange one, as well as the pink colorful one I ordered, and those looked narrower across and with more rounded corners, the way it does in the image where you choose the pattern. I still can't wait to get mine though, I'm sure ill still like it (and will add my own magnet of course)

I think I know the shot you are talking about - maybe was on there around day one?
Definitely a bit different, and way different than the design app makes it look for sure.
On playing with it throughout the day, though, I definitely think I am pretty happy. My gripes are largely superficial to this point.

So I was really impressed by the Galaxy Nexus' design, the curved screen, it looks and feels great in the hand, unlike any other, I tell you. But I had to give up on it because I couldn't live with the purple tint issue (and several other issues). Now that the Nexus 4 is here, only time will tell if it also has some of those weird issues ready to greet you as soon as you open the box. But even if it is perfect in every way, there's one aspect of it that no one has talked about... The Design.
You see, the Galaxy Nexus was a beautifully designed phone (keeping its hardware specs and other issues aside). The Nexus 4 looks like a plain old smartphone (haven't seen it in reality tho, have seen only pictures like most of you guys). It looks like an iPhone tbh (a poorly designed iPhone) . The design is a real dealbreaker for me (but that's just me, dunno about anyone else). But still, considering it's the next Nexus phone, and priced at just $299, one may overlook the poor design anyway and get it already (considering there are no issues or challenges like those we saw in several GNex units).
So, what do you think of the design of Nexus 4? Like it in terms of design? Disappointed? Yes, I'm comparing it to the GNex, because it's a successor to that. What about you?
Funny, I see most people talking about how crappy the GNex looked, and how beautiful they think the Nexus4 looks. Personally, I think it looks amazing (albeit the glass back worries me a bit)

The GNexus looked like #%$! with the curved screen and hump on the back. An OCD'ers worst nightmare!
The Nexus 4 is a slice of heaven compared to the GNexus.
The Nexus 4 still has a curved screen, just in a different, far better, way

what are you talking about GNex and N4 have rhe same front (nearly) xD
and please tell me which part looks like an iPhone?
Softwsre buttons? curved design? bigger size? or the different ratio?
imo it is a desinging MASTERPIECE by Matias , including the back and front
at 299 dollar im not overlooking the poor design, im getting a desing MUCH better than any phone ever
Thanks for the replies. Like I said, I have only seen the pictures (well there's your problem!), and I'm comparing it to the GNex (ha, another problem!). But it seems most (if not all) of you fine folks really like the design. Guess I'd like it too, but only after I'll see the phone in person.

When the screen is off all smart phones look the same to me. A black slab.......
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/1...e-bar-for-design-materials-and-build-quality/
As the author of this ^ article puts it right, "Well the Gnex looks like it just walked out of a garbage heap when compared to the N4." Just look at the two side by side.
I feel in love with it in the first sight. Been researching WP8 for the last 4 months. But just one look was enough to tell me, this is it. Mind you, at that time, I didn't even know about the specs..the looks plainly just did it for me..

Pfft this phone is god. Google about time seriously but I will say this its gonna be a major let down if something is wrong with it.
Honestly I never liked Samsung build quality if you squeeze them they creak like a cheap remote control and HTC is not even worth talking about the iPhone 4 has superior build quality then any android phone this looks to be even just as good if not better. If you watch Google demo the phone they know it owns
I'm sure with Samsung they were still call in some shots because Samsung is big now but Google was like screw that plastic **** for 700 dollars or whatever stupid price they charge for a plastic handset

exactly. I could never understand the hype around Samsung. They have the cheapest hardware for the most expensive price tag. Somehow it never made any sense to me. This, on the other hand looks classy. The price is perfect and it has a pure Google experience.

samsung has nice designs/styling with AMAZING marketing. samsung is the apple of the android world
people who know nothing about phones will run around saying the s3 is the best phone ever, without even knowing the spec differences between the s3, one x, nexus 4, etc
Lol when I first saw the video by verge, matias duarte takes the nexus 4 out from the cover and I swear the god my eyes went like (0.0)

No, that crown definitely belongs to Apple with the iPhone 4 design. Even to this day I feel as if it's one of the best looking phones out there.
The nexus 4 is no slacker though. I if you think about it, it's taken a lot of design cues from the iPhone 4 design and improved upon them. Glass on both sides, single band around the sides etc.

They are then just black slabs with a little bit of color around them.
Why cant they do something better than the crappy chrome plastic around the bezel.
My Note 2 and Note 3 look dented and crap because of this poverty spec feature. Now the S5 has it too
All i want is some premium built quality and better speakers on this phone and it would be perfect.
For £550 we should get it, I cant live with IPS LCD so i have to go with Samsung.
Its like an abusive relationship this is. I cant live with it and i cant leave either.
I would gladly take the plastic over a poor screen.
I don't understand *****ing about the plastics I put a case on all my phones (and have never broken a phone and have had a cell phone for 15 years). I'd be *****ing about how the finger print scanner, heart rate monitor and the camera blur gimik doesn't work all that well.

i have tempered glass and thats it.
Chrome plastic belongs on children's play jewellery not a £550 phone. They should have made the edge Stainless steel or something like that.

Just because a phone is made out of aluminium doesn't mean the quality is better. My HTC one still get dented when I drop it. It has scratch mark as well. It's also heavier and more slippery to hold.
I agree.
When I saw the S5 I hated the chrome bezels.
SO SO SO UGLY.
Seriously.
Also thought the same when I saw the Note 3 for the first time.
Looks like an old design instead of a modern and fresh one.

I do agree about the chrome paint though, it's unnecessary, a rubbery matte black like on the Nexus 4 would give better grip. That chrome paint will be the first to go, the glass front and the rugged back will stay the same a lot longer.
The plastic bezel is my biggest pet peeve with the device. Sadly very few of the S5 cases cover it either.

Or an iphone 5S.
I own them all and by far the iphone has the best build quality in and out, bar none.
Too bad it doesn't run android!
The HTC One feels better in hand (the M8 could be used as a deadly weapon in the hands of a skilled tosser, seriously!) but I see differences in quality from sample to sample unfortunately.
As far as making the S5 with a metal chassis, it may have better appeal but you just cannot wrap the current design in metal. Unless you don't mind serious signal issues!
If you want the phone looking new (and really this applies to ANY phone) you should wrap it in a case. Granted the iphone4 was probably the best for staying like new naked. Until you dropped it and shattered the glass.
The S5 does feel cheap because it's light. Like most things technical, the average person believes they are better if they are heavy. I don't mind the "bandaid" back cover to be honest. It's grippy. The glossy cover of the S4 may have been sleeker but it's a fingerprint magnet and shows scratches easily.
When it comes to something you carry, remember the heavier it is, the harder it falls. This is why a lightweight phone can survive drops better than a brick of a device.

All you people b!tching and whining, the back is removable and therefore replaceable. Go on eBay/Amazon and search S5 backs, or buy another phone. End of thread/discussion...
