[Q] portrait mode lag - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using the latest jcsullins ROM for jelly bean. Do you guys notice lag when scrolling through home screens in portrait mode? It isn't anywhere as smooth as landscape mode. I tried this on nova prime and treb launchers.

Bump. Does anyone have this problem or just me?

i do, and since the honeycomb it remains as an unsolvable problem

I'm on the same rom, but I never use portrait mode. I just tried it, and no lag. I'm using Apex launcher, maybe that's it?

Try scrolling in the browser, you'll notice a difference on heavier pages for sure. It is harder to tell on less intensive apps like the launcher.

I installed the FPS meter app to see the difference on the homescreen. When scrolling through homescreens on portrait mode i get around 30-40 fps, but in landscape mode it is a solid 60. I tried acme uninstalling and webos doctoring, reinstalling multiple roms. I have this problem using every type of launcher except GO launcher EX, for some reason it is smooth around 60 in both landscape and portrait, but only in CM9 nightly, not cm10 roms. So weird... I wish a developer for some of the roms could look into this.

[Q] Dev Challenge: TwLauncher with Landscape mode [video attached]

Guys,
SGS owner sapiensbryan found a bug in TwLauncher to make the TwLauncher to able to display Landscape mode for both desktop/ Home and Application screen, but the change is neither auto nor permanent.
Will any developer able to make a patch to make it switchable and permanent just like LauncherPro?

>> Firmware 2.1-update1 (Eclair.DXJG4).
>> Try playing Angry Birds then return to homescreen half way playing, you might see the homescreen in landscape if you are lucky.
Cool but, where does he explain how he did it?

looks like Samsung can make TwLauncher in Landscape but has it locked, do not know the reason behind.
I believe the homescreen goes into landscape on the Epic 4G when the keyboard is out. Since the firmware is similar the code for landscape mode is still there on the other versions.
If you use LauncherPro you can have it go into landscape mode based on orientation, but it happens to be more irritating that useful.

I would think this would be related to performance in general. So if the phone is performing well, it rotates quickly. If it's performing poorly, it rotates slowly...
There's a few things you can try to improve performance. Overclocking helps a little, but it's not a huge difference. Keeping apps from auto-starting on boot helps, I'm not sure of a simple way on how to do it... Suggested method for preventing apps from auto-starting.
That same user also uses an app called 'DroidWall' to prevent apps from connecting without permission. Might help with performance as well (not sure, but it can't hurt).
Anything that will slow down your phone has to go. Widgets are killer I've found... As much as I like them, they made the home screen SO slow. On that same tangent of home screens, have you looked at different launchers? The stock 'Launcher2' is kinda slow itself. I like ADW myself - there's many others out there (Zeam, GoLauncher EX, Launcher Pro to name a few...)

My Galaxy Note's Home Screen not auto-rotate!!!!

After playing a round with some apps and games, My Galaxy Note's Home Screen not auto-rotate!!!! Only home screen, applications still do!
Any helps?? pls. Thanks
Previously your home screen auto rotating? if yes you must be on custom launcher
what launcher are you using? Touchwiz does not auto rotate.
The only 2-3 times when I saw the original stock TW in landscape mode (on Galaxy S) were when a landscape game was crashing, hanging nearly the whole system. Then, for a second the TW was displayed in landscape (icons rotated etc.) but immediately after it was switching to portrait. I'm still wondering why Samsung decided not to enable TW landscape mode in any of their Android phones.
I recommend a custom and faster launcher like Launcher Pro.
Recently my Note works nomally sincer i bought it (2 months).
I'm using Rocket Rom v21, AbyssNote 3.5c kernel, WITHOUT custom laucher!
This morning, i played Tom clancy's HAWX game. still smoothly
Help me pls.
I reflashed it with new ROM, still not rotate Face screen!
P/S: not only the Face screen, the applications grids (mean: after press the "application icon" on the home screen bottom bar) not work too. But each app and game auto-rotate!

The stock TW launcher for the Note doesn't work in landscape mode. If yours was doing it somehow, it wasn't normal behaviour and was probably related to a customisation on your phone.

One question needing your help is: #2 happens to all Note users with default laucher?
It is possible with custom launcher nly.. No auto rotation of home screen in tw launcher..

First as I had Stock Rom and the TW Launcher i didn't knew it on the landscape mode.
It is impossibru in TW Launcher
Then as I flashed CustomROM and installed Go Launcher Ex i saw that the homescreen is auto-rotating and my face was like w00000t?
Therefore it only works with another Launcher than the TW-Launcher
Just try
I noticed that Go Launcher runs laggy on my Galaxy Note has anyone else experienced this?
You want free 4-directions rotation, you install Rotate: http://market.android.com/details?id=nl.fameit.rotate
latest version acts also as a Tasker plugin so that you can disable it for specific apps in the foreground (hint: camera apps).
It also force-rotates the default launcher of the Note, i.e. TouchWiz, with excellent results.

To repeat other posters..
The stock, default launcher on the Samsung Galaxy Note does NOT auto-rotate the home screen

See Original message for the link. I'm not allowed to post links yet...
Confirming this works on stock UK ICS.
The app lack documentation, and large widgets are cut off at the bottom. Still, it does the job. Great work!

Portrait or Landscape?

Hi all, I've had this tablet for about 2 weeks now. Before I received it, I assumed that I would set up my home screens for landscape mode and go Tablet UI right away. But as time goes by I find myself using portrait mode a lot more, whether or not it be setting up my launcher or using apps (with the exception of watching videos, of course).
What do you prefer?

I use portrait mode for most thing but web browsing and videos. Its real nice having the option

Portrait is so much easier to type and see text with since there's more text listed than landscape. I also find it LOADS easier to type with my thumbs in portrait mode.
I'm finding the typing a lot easier as well with two thumbs and the ability to swipe as well.
I use landscape for videos, portrait for everything else
Portrait for almost everything except YouTube.
I am 50-50 so far. I like landscape for web surfing and videos, portrait for reading and replying to messages. I should find an alternative keyboard to make thumb typing a little easier.

Get on the SwiftKey Flow beta. It's great on this device in either mode. Just change it to separate thumb mode while in landscape.
I'm about 50 50. I like using landscape and with the 4.2 keyboard it's pretty easy to type... for me

With my iPad I use portrait all the time probably because its big and heavy but with my nexus 7 I use landscape for almost every thing. I think because its pretty small and I feel I get more on the screen that way, plus I get to see all of the wallpaper on my home screen too

Landscape 99% of the time here... I could never find any advantages of using it in portrait - folks say that it's easier to type, but the keyboard is much smaller in portrait mode, which makes it harder to type in my opinion (much easier to hit the wrong key by accident).
Very interesting that it seems most folks prefer portrait.
Of course my case caters to landscape mode too, so that may play a big part as to why I use landscape mode most of the time...

the problem in landscape mode is the navigation bar that the bar is always on front.
That reduces the screen and make it too small.
I would like to have the choice to put the navigation bar at the side in landscape mode.
Does it possible ?
I find in landscape you can't see much, when the keyboard pops up it takes most of the screen and is so hard to view and type at the same time.

I usually use apex (sometimes nova) launcher, when you keep it in landscape (or portrait) only, you can maximize the area available. But then youre not able to use the other way ...

the problem with apex is the portrait / lanscape compatibily.
you can have a big desktop on landscape but the icons will disappears when switching to the portrait mode.
That's very annoyoing and this fix should be a basic feature !!

Is there any launcher capable of having icons arranged differently in portrait and landscape modes?
90% portrait
Both
jtrosky;36533214...folks say that it's easier to type said:
True, but N7 screen width in portrait mode is same size as ~4" phone landscape.
In landscape, I can't type comfortably, because I guess I have quite short fingers and my thumbs can't reach the keys in the middle of the screen.
I use it mostly in portrait (my homescreen is arranged for portrait), I also browse in portrait mostly, because of exact thing Apple was bashing N7 on their iPad mini release (those extra pixels on iPad mini) - there's too much stuff on top and bottom, making visual area small (in chrome you can't hide address bar, like on stock phone ICS browser (it hides automatically when you scroll down the web site).
I find it more comfortable to hold in portrait, and it's easier to read stuff too (books are portrait after all).
I use landscape for videos and games (and stupid new skype).

Both ways but I guess its in Portrait most often.

Landscape mode for the home and apps screens?

I recently installed a Pioneer Appradio 3 in my car, and the mirroring only works correctly if the phone is in landscape mode. If the screen is in portrait mode, the touch functions don't work properly. The problem is the home and apps screens force portrait mode, which makes it incredibly difficult to use the radio.
Is there any way to get landscape mode for these screens? I'm using the stock ROM at the moment, but OK with flashing a new ROM if necessary.
Bumping this.
Would it just be a manner of changing the launcher, or will I need to flash a new ROM? If I need to flash, which ROMs support landscape mode for these screens?

The stock ROM, or even a launcher on the stock rom doesnt support horizontal home screen. You can check the features list of the roms 2 identify which one supports it. Ive tested Insertcoin 8.1.3 nd ViperOne 5.8.0 and it works properly. I havent tested other ROMs, but these two should be fine....
Thanks so much. I switched to ViperOne and everything works great.
