How to get old person smell out of used electronics - Off-topic

Haha, OK, NO idea where to ask this. So I bought a portable battery pack on eBay...When it arrived, it had all the tips, worked great, BUT, oh man, it smells like they took it out of grandpa's coffin. I haven't even gotten anything at a thrift store that's smelled this bad - let alone something that's plastic and I have no idea how is absorbing that smell! I now know why some eBay auctions talk about "smoke/pet free home", but this would have to be like dead people free home! Eww! I sprayed them down with alcohol based scented hand sanitizer but I still don't think that killed it. Has anyone ever had this problem? I am still baffled at how it somehow sunk into the plastic!!

Try cleaning it with vodka. I know vodka takes out the cigarette smell from clothes. EVen those that have been in a smoker's room for a few years.

Well, since hand sanitizer is an even higher concentration alcohol, I'm guessing it would have done the same thing.

Stop smelling it?
Hang an Air-freshener tree from each ear?
Breathe through your mouth?
Cover it in rotten meat so it doesn't smell like old person anymore?

It infects everything it touches. I put it on a pillow, now I have to wash the pillow. I touch it, I have to wash my hands. Not smelling isn't an option.

First you use soap and water on it. Then you dry it off and use fire to cleans the evil from the electronics.

THen you can just drink the vodka, and after a while you wont smell it.

Dip it in odor eliminating paint. That should keep the smell from coming out of the plastic.

You must lick it clean.

would i get in trouble for carrying one around or on a flight?

Tactical just means that... u can use it for self defense but really any pen can be used for "tactical" defence. I sell these at my job but without the stylus part. I don't believe that you would get in trouble cuz it is after all a pen.
Nice find though

You can still poke someone in the eye with a plastic pen. Doesn't need to be a metal one:silly:
Tactical means it looks vaguely militaristic and is a surefire buzzword for selling anything at all to the wannabe soldiers out there..
Hold still while I write a stern note to you with my tactical pen or I'll blind you with my tactical torch. I'd hit you with my tactical belt but my tactical trousers would fall down..
They sell similar products at Walgreens for ten dollars.

I wouldn't say Florida is picky. In fact the state is pretty easy going on firearms and other weapons compared to many states. The TSA is a federal organization anyway so it doesn't really have anything to do with the state.
I don't consider it a weapon but many of these tac pens have glass breakers and DNA catchers. They're also relatively sharp and heavy... maybe that's why its considered a weapon.
Anyway. S&W makes pretty good tac gear. I might have to pick this specific one up. Thanks for posting.

Cracked Nexus 4

I don't post much but i had to post this. If you have a nexus 4 get a case ASAP. I have had many phones before this and i have never seen a phone crack so easily. I have Thrown my vibrant and nexus s ( not new of course) and they never shattered. This thing fell out of my pocket onto the floor while sitting at my desk. I measured the distance at approx. 2.5 feet. It looks like i flung it off a cliff. Gorilla glass my ass. I could understand if it cracked but this thing had chunks of glass coming off of it some of it splintered into my thumb.

People seem to forget the definition of a troll. Oh well. As to the guy with the room mate it did not hit the corner it fell flat. but thanks for the advice ordering a temporary tpu case as i type.I am all for cases i never had a phone without one i just could not find any store around me to buy a temporary case while i wait for something form otterbox or something similar. I am not pissed just shocked at how much damage. I only posted to let others know not to hold out on a case and get one ASAP until they find something that suits them better. But ill let this thread die since it seems like the CRACK crack police (pun intended) is on the prowl on the forum.
Ouch, that's painful to look at.
Mine fell off my desk which is probably just about the same height. Slid off my wallet. <_>

Waterproofing

Ok so there is a few solutions out there, liquipel being one of the easier/better solutions. but with the new neverwet spray how many people are considering just paying 20 bucks and spraying all their devices (instead of 60 for just their sgs4)?

You first.
Not sure what brand it is but in the computer world we use some stuff to coat the motherboard and videocard and everything else when water cooling in case of a leak. Works very well and isn't anything new but would work for phones as well.

Corrosion x works wonders. Been using it on float plane and boat electronics for years. 10 oz can is 10 bucks. I spray the phone iPods everything. I haven't ever had a problem. Its kinda stinky for a day or two. Just make sure to spray and let it set overnight then dry outside off and you will be good to go.

A lot of that stuff is silicone based (hence the stinky for a day or two) and can cause big respiratory problems if inhaled. Not something I would want to have near my face on a regular basis.

Dropped S4 in Toilet
I thought people might find this interesting.
I was out of town last night and my wife called me from our house phone and let me know she dropped her S4 in the toilet
She knew that she needed to get the battery out asap and pull sim and sd card and put in a bowl of rice until I got home and could disassemble to let the innards dry out.
So I just got home and disassembled the phone and to my amazement there was not a bit of moisture inside. Not even under the main board.
I reassembled and turned it on and it's still like new. Both speakers (earpiece and back) sound fine and I have listened on the other end of a call and mic seems to be fine as well.
I'm not recommending that you try this for fun but if it happens and you act quickly you should be ok.

Self made duct tape case

So I work as a lifeguard and I need my phone in the stand for music and ideally I'd like to have a waterproof case but there seem to be none available. i dont want the salt air to corrode the ports and internals of my phone so i usually use a sandwich bag but it doesnt provide any protection from sand really and its annoying. So I'm pretty crafty with duct tape so I decided to make my own case. I just did it about a half hour ago I'll probably make a better version in the future after I figure out the flaws but here's a few pictures of it. Let me know what you guys think.

Well you could purchase those knock-off Otterbox Defender or Survivor cases. They should give you relatively ok protection from sand, drop impact, and minor splashes of water (for more water protection, those sealable cases I suggested earlier, would be your only choice).
This case http://www.ebay.com/itm/DRiPRO-Spor...t=US_Cell_Phone_PDA_Cases&hash=item4d0de9f4c3 is reusable, so that shouldn't be an issue.
I work beach volleyball and know what you mean, sand is the thing I fear most. I usually use two sandwich bags and scotch tape them tightly around the phone. Back camera's unusable then but the phone is safe the screen works just fine. I've also saran wrapped the phone itself and put it back in the case.

That's certainly a lot more compact and efficient than trying to find a product that just doesn't exist (I have the same problems as the OP with a different model). There's no long term water/sand proof solution for any of the Notes. Desecration? I guess a scratched up, worn out phone is preferable. I've been working on the beach for six years, I know what I'm talking about.
I've been using freezer bags lately for working beach volleyball; they seem thicker.

Personally, I didn't find it fungly. I thought it was crafty and humorous. The worst thing, I was waiting or Jeff Foxworthy to finish the "you might be redneck" punch line, LOL. It was also something I could see my grandpa loving. Duck tape fixes everything.
But hey, if ziplock bag wasn't working for you, that couldn't have cost more than $1 in parts. Maybe fifteen to thirty minutes of time. Obviously this is not a case about drops, but about keep tiny scratch particles from getting in. A prime example of function over form.
