USB port repair - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It appears that either the USB port or the USB controller is failing (has failed). The phone still charges but neither the phone nor any computer recognizes that the phone is plugged in. Even when I plug the phone into a wall jack, the phone does not make any sound or light up or show it is charging (it does charge though). If I go to the battery settings while the phone is plugged in (computer or wall) the phone recognizes that it is charging.
If the phone is off and I plug in the usb cable (compter or wall) the phone turns on by itself. This is problematic because I cannot get into the download mode using the 3 button combo. I also cannot get into the download mode using apps like Reboot Widget.
I installed USB Host Controller which says that the USB cable is not plugged in when it is. I can disable and enable USB charging though. Changing the USB Host Drivers has no effect.
So it looks like I need to send it into mobiletechvideos for repair. But reading through the reviews there is concern that just replacing the USB port wont fix my problems if the USB Controller is shot.
Not only did they replace the USB port and get it back to me in about a week but they told me that since the controller had failed and the phone couldn't talk to the computer I wasn't charged the full price for the repair.

So I guess I'm asking if anyone here knows anything about this issue and if mobiletechvideos.com can repair it.
I am also going to email mobiletechvideos.com asking them this same question.
Thanks for your time.

Mobiletechvideos (Connexion2005 on xda) can most likely repair your phone. Him and Adam Outler have been doing the impossible with devices!

Unable to mount USB to PC.

So, after messing around with AC Sideload Wonder Machine installing a bunch of apps, something happened and now I can't mount my Captivate to my computer. When I plug the USB into the PC, it momentarily shows "Charging" on BattStatt, but then it goes away immediately and the phone does not show an option to mount nor does it charge the phone.
I have the USB settings set to Mass Storage and USB debugging off. I've tried a different computer and nothing. USB drivers have been installed.
For some reason, it charges the phone if I plug it into the wall.
Did I damage the cable? Did I corrupt some system files? Any advice? Thanks in advance.
Edit: Not rooted, stock android 2.1. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling the USB drivers. Doesn't help.
Did you try enabling usb debugging again?

Yeah, that doesn't do anything either.
D'oh, just went through this too. Been a while I guess since I'd done it. You have to open the notification bar and select the "copy files for USB" option.

try using another cable, if it doesn't work, look into possibly master reset. If not that, try one click downloader reset.

I just tried another cable on another PC and it sort of works if I jiggle it a bit - I'm able to maintain a connection and transfer files, and it charges as well. I'm starting to think the USB port on the my phone may be defective.
My usb port was a little bent on my phone, after one of my sons tried to disconnect the cable sideways rather than straight. I just adjusted the outer parts very carefully with small pliers, and also bent the inner contact slightly. After that I had no more problems with charging, just be careful! Maybe that could help you, mrpibb?
Also make sure your USB slider door is fully open. It will "click" when fully open or closed.

Yeah, it's fully opened. Using the cable that came with the phone, it never works. Using a different cable, it sometimes works. The weird thing is that it charges fine via AC adapter when its plugged into the wall.

Spitballing here but it might not be the cable but the adapter on the phone.
Pins 1 and 5 (power) might be ok but either pin 2 or 3 (data) could be defective on the phone.

[Q] Phone says usb connected... But its not

Hi Everyone,
I was running GR-11 last night. My phone started acting weird so i decided to reboot it. When it shut off it didnt turn back on. I hit the power and still nothing. I was eventually able to get into download mode with a combination of usb and buttons without battery. So i flashed back to stock. Still the same problem, if i turn the phone off i cannot get it to turn back on unless i pull out the battery, plug in the usb, put the battery in, wait for the charging screen then i can turn it on and remove the usb. However, when the phone is running it says USB connected even though there is no usb cable connected. If i leave the usb cable plugged in while the phone turns on i can use ADB but cannot mount as drive.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks
tldr; phone constantly says usb connected. Cannot mount as drive. Cannot use adb unless phone boots with usb connected.
Sounds like a broken usb port. Get a Warranty replacement.
Well darn.
I had read a thread about possible corrosion of the usb contacts on the phone so i used an emery board to clean the contacts but no luck. i guess it will have to go in for warranty repair on monday.

The handful of stock Froyos I've worked with all had sticky USB notification after use in development mode. They'd be unconnected but the icon and message remained.
If you can't do the extra clicks for mounting when the message is valid and connected; that plus your booting problem points to a port malfunction.

[Q] Z3c won't charge on DK48 dock

So, I have the official Sony DK48 dock for my Z3 Compact (no case). The phone will recognize that it is connected to the dock by giving the notification sound, but the battery will not charge while on it. I've tried wiggling it all sorts of different ways, and tried at least 3 different USB cables, but still no dice.
Is anyone else having this issue?
Have you used original cable? I had this problem with some poor quality cables, they were too thin inside for the designed current
plug it in the mains...

With 'mains' you can mean so many things.
I guess you mean plug the cable in an electrical outlet, rather then in a computer. I believe that I had the same issue. (Worked fine in an outlet)
The DK48 will only charge the phone when power comes from the mains. It does not charge the phone when connected to a USB port of a PC or laptop.
Use the original charger and the original cable that came with your phone and the Z3/Z3C should charge just fine in the DK48; that's at least what my does.
Yes all of my attempts occurred while plugging the dock into the AC adapter that came with the phone.
I guess then it seems like its a faulty DK48...
It should work with the original cable, adapter and electric outlet (not a PC).
Why wouldn't the DK48 charge through PC? How does it know? Amperes?
The input from the computer is too low even when you plug the USB to 3.0 port... Unfortunately you MUST use wall charger for the DK48 to be working.

I am a bit late in this thread, but I will post it anyway in case somebody has the same problem. Dk48 won't charge phone while connected to PC, because it checks if data lanes in Micro USB port are used. If they are, charging is stopped. If someone wants to charge phone using dock connected to PC (I for example connect it to my active USB hub, which is connected to my PC) it is necessary to use Micro USB cable, which doesn't use data lanes, just charging ones.
I hope it will help somebody.

Charging delay issue

I'm having a very strange problem. When I plug any USB charger into my devices micro usb, it immediately connect (I use lightflow and get a light indicator as soon as I plug it in). However, it will take about 5 extra seconds for the device to actually begin charging. (indicated by the lightening bolt in the battery icon). Anyone know why this is or how to fix? I'm hoping it's not a hardware issue with my device.
This is also causing any PC to not recognize the device (regardless of ADB, drivers, USB debug, MTP, etc.).
Thanks

I do not think the two behaviors are linked. As I posted on your other thread, mine has the same delay when plugging in the charger. However, I have no problems with PC recognizing device. Explorer can see my device's SDcard. And ADB works flawlessly.
any fix on this? Mine has been doing it for a month or so now. Also my battery has went to **** as well. Also - did you buy yours from qualitycellz?

Question charging the phone

Hello guys
I recently changed from S9+ to S21 and I have a question : I usually use my desktop computer to charge my phone during night while I sleep. (with data USB cable)
I have no problem when the desktop is on (under windows) : my phone charge (with USB cable) and I can transfert photos.
When my computer is off, when I plug the phone, the screen show the charging screen for 2 seconds and stops
I have no problem with my S9 to charge when the computer is off. (I know that there is an option in the bios to keep USB charging when computer is switched off)
It looks like the USB power is too low, and the S21 doesn't want to charge with it.
Maybe ther is an option in the phone to authorize this kind of charging ?

There isn't such an option in the OS as of now. It's possible that the S21 battery amp requirements are more than those of S9
Do you think the computer's USB port has a lower supply when the computer is turned off ?
We don't know what kind of computer you have, or what it's USB port capabilities are. That's something you can try to figure out, looking at your computer or manual for the computer's motherboard. Also check the BIOS settings, sometimes you can control the power state of the computer when it is "off" and whether power is still supplied to the USB ports (e.g., to allow the computer to boot up when it detects mouse or keyboard USB inputs).
As an example, my MSI motherboard has a feature where you can install software to set the USB ports to a high power output state, so you can power USB devices using more than the standard output current.
My Dell laptop has a USB port with a special symbol that means it's for high-power output for charging phones etc. So it can handle charging modern phones, and puts out more than 0.5 amps, but only for those USB ports with the special symbol (lightning bolt).
You'll need to just find out more information about what your computer is capable of.
I have a MSI gaming pro carbon X370 ( the optional wake by USB is on, without that, you're right, the USB are totally off and nothing will charge)
I did more investigations .... I tried all my USB cables and all USB ports and finally find 1 combination that works.
Only 1 of 12 USB cables worked ( the one took from an external HDD ) even the original cable supplied with the phone didn't work and nor a 100W Ugreen cable...
And only the front USB work. The different USB directly on the motherboard doesn't work with this phone, despite I always used them to charge many devices...
for information the working cable is a KAIBAO revision 3.0
Finally it doesn't work with this cable : it take longer before the phone stops to charge, but it stops too ...
Hi,
You need to check the power requirements of your new phone.
Thank you.
