Hi guys, I just bought a Galaxy Note and want to know about the flash counter.
I have a Galaxy S I9000 and flashed 100's of different ROMS via ODIN and never had any issues. But I have heard that Samsung keeps a track of it on SGS2 and on Note. Can somebody give me an explanation about the flash counter? Like how many attempts, how to reset, how it impacts the warranty, etc.?
Thanks & Regards,
Dinesh.
P.S.: Happy New Year to all the members of XDA.
If you flash stock rom with kernel it won't raise conter. It raises wen you use odin to flash custome rom. With a single raise you will lost warranty. Also it gives yellow triangle on boot, whivh cam be removed with flashing cf root, but to reset counter you need a tool 'jig'. Which is available on marker or you can make it own.
To make it own you hav to just open ne micro usb pin of note, have to connect 4th n 5th pin with 301resistor.
Thank you so much Dr. Ketan for the reply. So I believe I can flash any stock ROM from sammobile.com without raising the counter, right?
For ex: I m currently on KL3 and if I flash KL7 or KL8 firmware by downloading it from sammobile.com, It wont raise the counter. Am I correct?

Correct.
Cheers
U r correct just note that kl7/8 can't root directly. Reamaining me rom u can get it
Read link in signature if u need to know in detail
Got it. Thank you for all the responses. I any ways wont root my GNote so I m going to update it to KL8. I remembered rooting I9000 so I can install custom ROMS with Voodoo lagfix. I dont think its needed anymore with devices like SGS2 and GNote.
What are the improvements between KL3 and KL7/8/9 ? Is it worth upgrading it manually or wait from Samsung officially?
Hi, on Samsung Galaxy Ace Android 2.3, I can root it only by flash 'upd_1.zip'/'Acegingerroot.zip' from stock recovery. And it only ROOT the phone, it does not replace stock recovery.
Is it also possible on Galaxy Tab Android 2.3?
Try using zergrush. At least I think that's what it was called.

But perhaps there is someone who has tried 'upd_1.zip' on there Tab, and know if it works.
Because, I don't wanna try if it does mess up something.
Rooted a Galaxy Tab P1000 using SuperOneClick http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
worked perfectly

And you still have stock recovery?
SuperOneClick will root you and not replace Stock recovery. I did this several times when I was trying to find new ways to brick my tab. ;-)
If you don't mind my asking, why do you want to keep the Stock recovery. I'm not trying to discourage you from keeping it, but I've started playing with building my own kernels and I find life is a lot easier building in CWM recovery than just working with stock.
Okay thanks..
I also had the CWM on my own Tab before i sold it. But right now I use a friend's Tab while I was waiting to Tab 7.7 comes in stores. And I will not put CWM on my friend's Tab, because then he can not use the normal reset option 'Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset'. And he do not know (like all other normal people), that he instead should use 'CWM factory reset'. If the Tab has CWM.
Superoneclick worked for me but don't do what I did. lol
After rooting worked so great I reopened the superoneclick and tried a shell root thinking it must be even better! four white lights and soft brick was the result.
Respected Seniors. First off, I apologize for opening a new thread because i could not find answers to my queries in suggested threads
Some of my seniors know my problem and for those who don't know, I got superbricked while recovering Nand backup using an ICS Kernel. As soon as I wiped and factory reset my Note, its gone. Anyhow, i revived my phone using ADB method (Huge thanx to Forest1971 and hg42 ). I was good to go except lossing 3 GB space, which has since been a pain in *** and living with the knowledge that my Note is incomplete, is difficult for me. During the process, my binary count also rose to 5. So in order to claim my warranty, this is what i did:-
I upgraded from Stock GB to JPLPD- ICS. Than I rooted my Note and used Chainfire's Triangle Away (Special thanx to Chainfire) to reset my binary count from 5 to 0. After that i uninstalled Triangle Away and unrooted my phone. Now the position is :-
1. Galaxy Note is running:-
a. Android 4.0.3
b. Baseband Version N7000XXLPT
c. Kernel Version 3.0.15-N7000JPLPD-CL643396 [email protected]#3 SMP PREEMPT thu May 31 16:09:57 KST 2012.
2. The Note's Internal Memory space is 8.24 instead of original 11.3 or something.
3. Custom Binary Count is NO or O and Rom Version is : Samsung Official
4. The phone is unrooted and all apps requiring root access are gone.
Dear seniors, two questions are solicited now with respect:-
a. Will Samsung be able to detect the mess i have been doing with my Note now if i claim warranty?
b. Is there any plausible reason to explain Samsung how I lost 3 GB space? because i have just planned to tell them that i upgraded from GB to ICS through kies, during which phone restarted few times and once finally completed upgrade, i found out 3 GB space missing.
Guidance in this regard will be thankfully appreciated.
Today I visited Samsung CSC here in Pak and after having a look at my warranty, they didn't even had a look at my phone and dropped this shell over my head saying, " You have purchased it from Saudi Arabia?", i said, "Well yea" , they replied, "Its a limited warranty, claimable only in Saudi Arabia". Booom. Game Over.
I don't understand about the "losing 3gig" bit. Something has been downloaded to a system area? In that case can't it just be removed once the device is rooted?
I know about Linux but I'm still trying to figure out the inner workings of Android, so maybe I'm off the mark.

i think will cost a charge from samsung....
Flash the original PIT file (can find from hg42 thread) then the partitions of your phone will be back to original stage again, and it will be in the brick condition again (as before you revived it). cheers.

ADB method when used compelled me to segregate bad areas of emmc, i had to re-partition the factoryfs.img, Data and UMS by bringing them ahead of the corrupted blocks. Thats y i lost 3 GB. Practically, the space is there but being unpartitioned, i will not show up.

Now this sounds a gr8 idea
thank you dear forest. You always come to my rescue but just to be clear, in order to me to show its bricked, should i just flash the original PIT and thats it? or i should also install GB rom which would be bound to stuck at factoryfs.img. Also, please tell if even stuck at factoryfs.img would odin cause increase in binary count or not
thanks again
Should flash PIT file together with the official ICS (flash official roms will not cause yellow triangle), since it is the cause of the brick which happened while you update from GB. cheers.
Okie. So here I am, just to update and advice fellows something:-
I visited Samsung CSC today and tried to claim my warranty showing them my bricked phone Before having a look at my phone, they checked my warranty and replied that Since I purchased this set from Saudi Arabia, I cannot claim it in Pakistan because it has got a limited warranty. They further said that in order for me to repair the phone, i have to bear all the cost. After lots of arguing, i said, "Thanks but no thanks" and left out.
Here are my expressions:-
1. I have to live without 3GB space until Samsung does something for superbricked Notes due to emmc bug.
2. Never buy a phone outside your country, even if u find it a little cheaper than ur home country.
3. Be very careful in installing custom roms. Always flash from Stock GB or safe kernels.
Brick or no brick, you cannot claim warranty. Stick with your crippled storage space until you find a way to claim warranty from KSA.

Hi guys, i got an s3 GT-i9305N LTE and it's a little bit booring and limited without the root just because of the two year warranty and i don't wanna increase the flash counter of the phone and risk avoiding the warranty and i got two questions if you guys could answer, just to be sure before i do anything with rooting.
1. do you know if this guide will work for root without increasing flash counter for my phone using this guide but with the GT-i9305N firmware (JB 4.1.1) i got from samfirmware.com: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728441 ?
2. If the guide would work, do you know if i can flash again normal stock firmware for unrooting the phone for having the warranty back and without increasing the flash counter?
ps. i don't have any usb jig/don't want to use triangle away (don't know how safe it is) and i still want stock recovery and not cwm.
So.. you want to walk on water.. or what was the question?
Seriously just follow the guide in the appropriet development thread.
Its named something like- What to do first when you got your i9305...
Its safe if you just read carefully.
And why not use cwm? If you are messing with the phone why not do it fully. In case of warranty issius you anyway have to restore it fully. And why not run triangle away? Just do it.

Unless you can get Samsung to sign a ROM with root permissions for you then you'll have to flash it. As for Triangle Away, it is really safe (OTHERWISE NOONE WOULD USE IT!)

Hey guys, i followed the guide and flashed it on my phone, and i got root permission without increasing the counter or a triangle showing up at boot. The guide was for I9300 but i used the firmware for I9305N and yea... it went pretty well
Hi guys,
I'm selling my s3 mini, currently running maclaw's CM 10.2, but I'm wondering how to reset my phone to the default software so the warranty will work. Could you tell me where I can download that? I'm from Croatia, name of the carrier is VIP.
Thanks!
Very difficult

I think it would be very difficult to do that, because if you want the warranty back, you must reset the flash counter. There are how to threads for that, but its very, very risky! Also difficult would be to find the original brandet firmware from VIP, I think this is nearly unpossible.
Use triangle away to reset the flash counter.
Use Odin and firmware for your phone to restore to stock, don't forget to replace custom recovery with stock recovery.
Then do a wipe and reboot phone.
There are posts that explain this process in greater detail so I would suggest using the search function.
