Hi guys, I just bought a Galaxy Note and want to know about the flash counter.
I have a Galaxy S I9000 and flashed 100's of different ROMS via ODIN and never had any issues. But I have heard that Samsung keeps a track of it on SGS2 and on Note. Can somebody give me an explanation about the flash counter? Like how many attempts, how to reset, how it impacts the warranty, etc.?
Thanks & Regards,
Dinesh.
P.S.: Happy New Year to all the members of XDA.
If you flash stock rom with kernel it won't raise conter. It raises wen you use odin to flash custome rom. With a single raise you will lost warranty. Also it gives yellow triangle on boot, whivh cam be removed with flashing cf root, but to reset counter you need a tool 'jig'. Which is available on marker or you can make it own.
To make it own you hav to just open ne micro usb pin of note, have to connect 4th n 5th pin with 301resistor.
Thank you so much Dr. Ketan for the reply. So I believe I can flash any stock ROM from sammobile.com without raising the counter, right?
For ex: I m currently on KL3 and if I flash KL7 or KL8 firmware by downloading it from sammobile.com, It wont raise the counter. Am I correct?

Correct.

U r correct just note that kl7/8 can't root directly. Reamaining me rom u can get it
Read link in signature if u need to know in detail
Got it. Thank you for all the responses. I any ways wont root my GNote so I m going to update it to KL8. I remembered rooting I9000 so I can install custom ROMS with Voodoo lagfix. I dont think its needed anymore with devices like SGS2 and GNote.
What are the improvements between KL3 and KL7/8/9 ? Is it worth upgrading it manually or wait from Samsung officially?

i want to get my note back to stock rom without root and all the custom staff i want it like the first day i bought it
Flash an official samsung firmware via ODIN. You won't increase the flash count or get a triangle if you use an official firmware.
Just Google, or use samfirmware.com for the firmware you want.
and i i make this option the warranty of the phone will be ok or when i rooted it i lost everything ??
When you root, it voids warranty
But again if you flash with Stock ROM, you regaint it (b'coz, no can know you have rooted)
Use links in my signature to find stock ROms
Hey Ketan,
I flashed custom kernels (Abyss 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.5) like four times. Would my binary counter be changed ? Can I know what the binary counter currently reads ?

You need to root your firmware first head over to this thread
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
when you are done with rooting and installing clockworld recovery mod you can easily flash to LA4 through cwm recovery
visit this section and download any LA4 custom roms u may want.
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1349
Steps are given in every thread how to flash it via cwm recovery so pay attention to it and follow exactly as they told u to flash it.
You are done ..
i am also from india i got the same Kl3 version i did the same way as i stated above and i am currently on [XXLA4]CheckROM Revo NoteHD™ V5 no problem yet its smooth and fast
and about the question of warranty, rooting voids the warranty of your phone and flashing if not done properly may harm your phone so its upto you to decide as no one here takes responsibilty if something happens to your phone , at end its your phone do what you want ..

There is no problem to use LA4, I m in india too, n using LA4 since it released.
If you set to LA4, you won't get ICS update over OTA/Kies. But you can always update it manually, stay tuned to XDA, how to get ICS, when it becomes available. OR simply you can revert back to KL1 indian ROM anytime n get ICS from OTA/Kies.
Now How to update KL1 to LA4.
That depend you want to Root your Phone or Not.
If you dont want to Root your device, simply download ROM LA4 and flash using PC odin.
If you want to Root, you have to Root it right Now on KL1, b'coz LA4 is non rootable. Just get Root + CWM n update to LA4 using either CWM OR Mobile Odin Pro.
Now rearding guide -
You can use 1st link on my signature to get Root + CWM to your KL1
Use 2nd link on my signature to download LA4

It won't brick if you follow exact procedure. If there is brick in case, most of time it is not real brick, it may be semi brick, which can be recoverable. and yourself also can do it, depend on problem you are having.
If any major issue or real brick happen, it can be depends on kind of error it have. reaction to Samsung totally depends on the issue you have.
If you update to Germeny, still you won't get update from germany, if your CSC is not set to it, again it is different things. But in real way it is much easier to get manual update, b'coz OTA/Kies update will erase your Root.
Backup is just image partition of your currant device, you can back to your ROM + currant settings + data, with few clicks, note for that you shud have running device + CWM. incase your device not getting into recovery, that backup have no role at that time, but you can flash to stock ROM, n then you can restore from your backup.

Yes, for rooting + CWM, you just go to first link on my signature, at the lower part of OP, you will find, 'I have Kernel KL1' - download it, extract n execute.
You will get Indian DDKla1 + Root + CWM.
you can flash Rocket ROM, by CWM. It is advisable to wipe data before flashing Rocket ROM,(it will lost your data, so you shud backed up it)you have to store zip file of said ROM to your memory card, get device into recovery (Home + Vol up + power), select Install zip from SD card, point to zip file, where you have stored it(there is separate menu for Int/Ext memory).
Thanks again Dr.Ketan.
Below is what i am seeing my mobile under about phone menu.
Kernel Version : 2.6.35.7-N 7000XXKL3-CL 793489
[email protected]#2
From the kernel version, KL3 is kernel version..rite? this is i have discovered frm chainfire's rooting thread. so it means i shud use KL3 version? or KL1 version?
Present i am in kL3 after rooting my phone can i directly flash with custom roms or i wan to root+cmw then i want to flash with custom roms
Plz provide u r mobile no brother @ Mr ketan

yes your kernel showing KL3, you have to download 'I have kernel KL3' theoritically.
But if i say frankly, it doesn't have difference, I have KL7, i flashed CF ernel KL7, that time, then after i pass through LA1,La3,La4, i still have CF root KL7, i didn't bother to change it, n working flawless. So nothing to worry much.

You have to get Root + CWM too. b'coz custome ROM available in flashable zip file. It need CWM.
REMEMBER, never ever flash any Custom ROM, with PC Odin.

seriously bro.. theres no need to worry at all. just follow doc ketan's thread plus u can watch his fully illustrated video also (dont read all posts in his signature threads and confuse yourself, just read the firsts few posts written by ketan only). in fact there's not much we have to do to root (everything is automatic/background task). first android phone is always exciting! i had the same tension like you.. but there's nothing to worry.. if something goes wrong i can guarantee one of us will give you a call.. chill!
Thank u anjath
Hello I am sorry to be a nuisance but I wonder if someone could help me. I made a mistake I think in updating to 2.3.6 baseband N7000XXLA4 kernel N7000XXLA6. I have been reading the posts and as they suggest downgrade via PC Odin. My concern however is if I do this will my flash counter increase and will I get the yellow triangle?
Thanks in advance
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
When you flash any stock ROM with PC odin, it won't raise counter, nor it give triangle.
Remember, never flash any custom ROM/Kernel with PC Odin.
You are on right track, Download any older, directly rootable ROM from here and flash with PC Odin
Hijacking the thread a little bit since I noticed the Doc was here and it involves downgrading to stock ROM
I'm on a rooted LC1 rom and want to downgrade to this stock rom... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20208273
I'm downloading the file right now and have about 45min left so I don't know exactly what's inside the archive.
But... do I really need Odin to downgrade? In my case... isn't it enough to flash the rom using CWM?
Brgds... /Tubgirl
Thankyou so much for replying Dr Ketan
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Update:
Download has finished and the file inside the archive is called N7000XBKK4_N7000OXXKK5_N7000XXKK5_HOME.tar.md5
I renamed the extension to .rar which allowed me to extract it. Inside are the following files...
boot.bin
cache.img
factoryfs.img
hidden.img
modem.bin
param.lfs
Sbl.bin
zImage
Any assistance on how to downgrade to this rom would be highly appreciated
Can it be done with CWM recovery?
Brgds... /Tubgirl
First.of all, dont manipulate qith file name.
Just extracted upto .tar.md5 is enough.
Another thing you have cwm (it needs cf root cwm, not stock recovery) then you can flash it with that, if you want to keep root intact.
You can.also use pc odin to flash any stock.ROM. With pc odin u will lose root.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Thanks Doc.
In my case I want to lose root because I'm sending my Note in for repair. Can I just flash with CWM recovery (choosing to flash everything including the kernel) and I'll be back to an early Stock ROM without root?
Thanks again Doc for taking your time
Brgds... /Tubgirl
Then best way to flash it with pc odin.
This will auto unroot u too.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Thanks again... flashing with Odin was easy and it didn't increase the counter.
Unfortunately it didn't solve the problems I'm having so I guess I have to send my Note in for repair. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1577638

Hi kramevans,
To ease your concern and worries, try watching this video from Ashwin:

I myself had the same doubt until I watch this video and perform the downgrade and rooting, step by step...and am now on custom rom...

Thank you doc, planning to root/flash my note to ICS. I don't know where to start(afraid in some case) to do it.
can we unroot our phone to get back warranty???
Flash any Stock ROM with PC Odin, will unroot device.
Just so I understand...
I have just bought a GN7000 off contract, so unlocked and unbranded. It has the same LA6, 2.3.6 and radio as the OP.
I've some experience with Android because I've rooted my HTC DesireHD, but not a lot. I want root to run Titanium and some other things that require root but have no real desire to flash additional roms (certainly not at the moment).
If I understand what I've read, and the sheer number of different posts and cross referencing means its hard to get a clear definitive view of what the current state of play is but as I understand it the options seem to be:
1. To root the phone without getting the warning counter you need to flash (with odin) an old samsung firmware then you can root it. If you upgrade after this you will need to wipe the phone and start again, and, you will need to use other tools too.
2. I also read of Mobile Odin and the post on that seems to indicate it can root the newer ROMs, but does it cause the warning counter to get updated or is it safe from that? Can I un-root a phone rooted in this way?
From the look of things option 2 seems the way to go, if I can understand the answers to the questions - which I can't seem to from the posts I've read.
Any help/advice would be most welcome.
Cheers
Hi guys. I’m new entry with N7000, from all point of views and I need your help.
I have this firmware on my phone: PDA N7000XXLA6; PHONE N7000XXLA4;
CSC N7000OXXLA1 (note I am from Romania – Orange carrier – and the phone is unlocked).
Before custom ROMs, I understand that I must do a downgrade.
Can you, please, tell me:
- what stock ROM should I choose (from those posted by Dr. Ketan) for downgrade?
- is it necessary to do a factory reset or any other thing before flashing stock ROM with PC Odin?
Thank you
Done it.
Thank you all for your posts.
Hi guys,
I wonder if this is possible.. and forgive me if this has been asked before... but
can I install a custom kernel on my Note?
The Kernel version is DXLC2 and its not yet rooted.. Can I install, say Franco's kernel, or SpeedMod thru Recovery Mode ? (copying the zip kernel in the internal SD of my phone)
Would that be possible w/o root?
TIA
No. You should be rooted..................
Maybe you can try first and let us know the result. Like myth-buster, you know..
No, you cannot..
Not "you should be rooted", or "try it". You must be rooted. period.
In the first instance i suggest you spend some time reading threads about Android and rooting and flashing.
ok thanks.. much appreciated
No u cannot.....
Xperian using xda app
Well.. that answers it.. I appreciate all your answers guys... I thought I could just leave my warranty intact while flashing on a custom kernel.. but I guess, that's not the case then.. I really need to root my Note and then flash custom kernel away...
Guess you can't have the best of both worlds...
anyway.. again..thanks to all.....
I would say you can do that. I tried it before with my unrooted LA1. The problem is with unrooted phone you can't flash custom kernel with CWM or Mobile Odin because these require root. The only option you have is PC Odin. It WILL work, but it will invoke yellow triangle and increase custom binary counter.
You have to be rooted. Period !!
Also :-
Read the Stickies in the Development section and follow the methods there to the dot and you can save yourself from the yellow triangle and increasing the binary counter. And later anytime can restore it back to stock just in case the situation arises of sending you phone to samsung !!
Cheers!
Hit thanks if it helped!
hi all, it s my first thread
i have a new samsung galaxy note never rooted, never updated, on gingerbread 2.3.5.
I want to know if i must root my device before doing this to update to ICS .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
If you want stock ICS you can just flash the required files using ODIN, If you want a custom ICS ROM then you will either have to flash a safe kernel and cwm (some kernels have cwm built in) then update that way, You may also have to flash ICS through ODIN, then a kernel, then a rom. read the requirements in the OP
If you let me know which ROM you want i can try help you through the process.

There´s no need to root your phone in order to update, but if you flash it thru PC Odin you will get the yellow triangle and will raise the binary counter. Besides, with the hardbrick bug around maybe is not the best idea to update now. You should hold on a bit until Samsung releases the fix for the bug....
thanks
i want to install stock ics rom, so i do like in the guide without rooting my note on gingerbread (before updating) ?
I upgraded to stock ICS by just flashing it via ODIN, Dont worry about the binary count or yellow triangle if you get it, It can be removed. I have it but wont remove it till i need to send it back.
But as glevitan said, Its best to stay on GB if you feel anxious about upgrading, There isnt a huge difference between the 2 anyway.
If you dont care and you are a dare devil who laughs in the face of danger, Just be sure to read read read all the guides.
If in doubt..............ASK !
