Hello I am newbie here.I know there is a thread for how to instal CWM recovery & how to flash custom roms, but I find that method very confusing . I have upgraded my phone to Gingerbead 2.3.6 using ODIN player (Build number:- DDKQ8). I have already rooted my phone using that zip file method. Now I want to install CWM recovery v5.0.2.6. Here are my questions.
1. Do I need to install CWM recovery v 4.0.0.9 first & then need to update it to 5.0.2.6 ? If so, how to do that?
2. After installing CWM, I want to backup my current OS,which is an official GB 2.3.6 update provided by Samsung for my country.How to backup it?
3.I still use 2GB sd card,so how much space is needed in my sd as well as internal memory while installing custom rom?
4.After installing new rom will my data stored in sd card (app backup files,music files,pictures etc.) get erased?
5.Please suggest me a good custom rom which has:- great battery backup,good interface, exciting features, fast response etc.)

1) No, you can directly install 5.0.2.6..
2) In recovery You will get options for backup and restore..this will take the backup of your current rom and you can restore at any time through it..
3) No need to make any free space..if you are not using any ext partition..
4) Not At all..it wont touch your sd card data..
5) It depends on You,Which Rom you like..read their thread for more info of the rom..

Sorry for asking u again, I am going to flash Apocalypse final 9.7.2012 ROMhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1700749 , but I have few questions.The installation procedure is as follows:-
Installation Procedure - Step 1 (rom)
1. boot into CWM5 Recovery
2. wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik
3. format cache/data/system/sd-ext
4. MOUNT DATA
5. flash APOCALYPSE-17.06.12
5. reboot and complete the setup wizard
What is mount data? I can't see that option in CWM 5 or is it suppossed to be mount/data ?
also it's a barebone ROM, so from where i can find essential apps like sms, mms, camera? also does bareback ROM contain google apps like gmail,gmaps,navigation etc. ?

should i wipe data reset, cache,dalvic cache before and after instaling cwm and custom roms
sould i hard reset my phone from phone settings or wipe data cache etc from recovery after instaling cwm or custom roms

No problem at all, you can do it but it isn't necessary, you can flash root file, then cwm 5.0.2.6. FIX or you can flash cf-root kernel to get both in one shot
I recommend you do 3 wipes before flash a custom rom and after too to get the cleanest rom as posible (e.g. If you get bootlop, some custom Rom not need it, or you'll get FC, anyway YOU ALWAYS READ THE DEVELOPER INSTRUCCTION TO INSTALL A CUSTOM ROM)
Even if you can restore a backup, do 3 wipes before restoring and then restore it (to avoid boot troubles), you'll get all your last configuration (if then you make 3 wipes you lost all your configuration)
What to do before flashing rom
All u need to know is in this guide, thats all u need to do before flashing a rom, u dont need to partition sd card, do it if rom requires it

Yeah! wipe dalvik cache is in advanced options
Doing a ext4 partition in your sdcard don't get a better performance if your sdcard's class isn't 6 or 10, I think doing a partition isn't a good thing if you use your phone as a normal usage.

i have 6 class samsung 8 gb memory card
now i have rooted stock gb
i made ext4 from mini tool partition wizard but when i insert memory in phone it says memory card corrupted or needs to be formated
when i formate it works fine without partition
does ext4 partition doesnt work on stock gb.
is it only for custom roms ??

Ext4 works fine in GB with a custom kernel and the correct script
If you want to use a ext4 partition you'll need to flash a INT2EXT script, with a custom kernel that support it with his init.d folder
You can flash cf root, battery extender, spacekernel, nims11 whatever you want for STOCK roms and you'll get a init.d folder, then flash init2ext script and done!

There is no need to do 3 wipes, its completely pointless, by wipe, they just mean factory reset via cwm, you should also wipe ext4 partition, and dalvik cache
If you are upgrading to a higher android version, then you do not need to wipe if you would like you keep all your apps. If you are going to a lower version, wipe the phone AFTER you have installed the rom, but if you dont wanna keep your apps after upgrading, wipe straight after installing the rom

3 wipes mean doing Wipe data/ factory reset, Wipe cache partition and Advanced> Wipe dalvik cache from CWM. Make sure to backup your data before you do it. I highly recommend you do this along with Mounts & Storage> Format /system & Format /sd-ext (if you have an ext partition on your SD Card) from CWM before you install another rom inorder to have a clean installation as possible. Hope I Helped

It is not at all pointless. Usually when you install a rom through CWM, all files inside this rom zip will be copied to your phone replacing the apps and other files there. But one thing that still remains there is the residual files from the previous rom. It is neither deleted or replaced after the flashing. Now certain system apps read from such residual files as long as its there (if its not there it will generate it again, this being the main reason why your first boot is always the longest). Since the residual files that it is accessing belongs to another rom, it can cause all kinds of error leading to lags and crashes and you might even end up getting a bootloop. Wiping before installing a rom is recommended to remove such residual files and prevent bootloops. The only exception is when flashing updates of the same rom assuming that the rom didn't undergo any change in the system level (just addition of new apps, files, etc). In such cases you don't have to wipe but if the update has made the rom undergo changes at system level like featuring a new kernel, etc, then you might have to wipe. So its always better to follows the installation instruction from the developer of the rom. Always make sure to backup your data before you do wipes, so that you can restore it when you install a new rom. Long story short, if you installing a rom different from your current rom or an upgrade of your current rom that involves changes at the system level, then perform wipe before the installation. If u flash clockworkmod(cwm) recovery over official stock(gb) firmware, then avoid formatting ur stock rom via cwm, it'll result in bootloop.
& it's not necessary to format data/cache/dalvik AFTER flashing a new rom. Some roms contain /data folder which means that u shouldn't format data after flashing.
For newbies: U can check what folders ur rom has by using "root explorer" app:sly:

Hi all, this is my first post on XDA. I'm having big troubles with my device, a Samsung Galaxy S Plus i 9001 and I'm looking for some advice.
After a clean installation of the rom i had been using for some time I started to get messages of force close for most of the apps installed at every boot. The ROM in question is SmoothieICS v2. I believe that the reason of this issue is the fact that I restored all the apps and the data with Titanium backup. To solve the problem I tried to restore a nandroid backup via CWM (version 6.0.1.0), but when a rebooted, the backup was not installed at all and the force close messages continued. After that I tried to wipe data and cache, reinstall the ROM via CWM and Odin, install the stock ROM, fix permissions, format the partition, but nothing worked. Every time I reboot the device, the old ROM boot up with the same force close messages.
I've read several posts on XDA with similar issues, but usually a clean reinstall worked fine. At the moment I'm out of option.
Find attache a copy of the logcat recorded after rebooting the device.
Any suggestion to save my phone is really appreciated.

Some tips here:
1: Flash BroodROM RC5 (this is an Gingerbread ROM with all the partitions of our device) via odin
2: flash CWM 5.5.0.4 (this is in my eyes the most stable recovery) and wipe all (system, data, cache,dalvic etc)

First solution,
SmoothieICS is an outdated ROM. Currently there are more stable and bug free releases are available for our device. You can try that.
But, the choice is yours, if you want to continue with it,
Access download mode, install a stable and safe recoveries like CWM 5.5.04, TWRP 2.2.1, or CWM 6.0.3.2 via odin or you can try to flash it via current recovery.
Then do a full data wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvic cache. If necessary, delete the partition and do a full format
Restore the nandroid backup or do a fresh install

Thank you both, but your solutions didn't work. After installing BroodROM via Odin my phone rebooted in SmoothieICS just like nothing happened. Also a new recovery can't be installed, Tried with TWRP and CWM with no luck :crying:

That's strange. How is it possible to show up again after deleting and formatting the partition completely.. Are you sure you formatted the data and system in mounts and storage menu of cwm recovery.?
Anyway, Remove your external sd card, and try all the methods again..

- removed the external sd card
- rebooted in recovery
- format system and data
- installed CWM 5.5.0.4
- rebooted in recovery
The recovery version installed is still the 6.0.1.0!!!!
It is like the internal SD card can't be written any more.
One thing I maybe didn't mention is that if I delete a file in the internal SD card and the reboot, the file is still there. it is not deleted.
This is really frustrating.

That's strange and weird. Haven't heard about such a problem before. I will look in to it and will reply you if i get something..

I recognize those symptoms. The i/o of the sdcard is defect.
What happens is that when you want to format random 0 and 1 are being written to remove the data on the card. If your card is broken and cant be written to you will be unable to format or flash anything. And thus the data on the card remains.

Does this mean that the only way to solve the issue is to replace the internal SD card?
Same Issue, but with SGS GT-I9000
I have pretty much the same problem!
Ive been reading a lot and it really seems to be a problem of the internal SD card!
I tried many times to delete all the files on the internal SD card via USB and via Recovery Mode, installed different OS ...nothing worked and most of my apps crash the whole time, so force close to all!
Im now about to decide to use my external SD as internal!
What do you say?

Hi guys, I'm genuinely lost on how to fix this issue.
Essentially, my i9305, rooted- running pacman rom (stable) android 4.4.4, says that it's internal storage is full. however, I've just flashed the rom onto it. I have cleared the cache, dalvik cache and wiped the phone (through rom manager, cwm) and re-flashed the rom and it persists to say this. When i went though each folder and added the bytes up, i should've had around 9gb available, yet is says i only have 656mb.
I believe the issue lies in the "/data" partition, is it possible to wipe it?
Please help!!!

Are you make backup with TWRP (or cwm..or other recovery)?
Download Clean Master and find big files who kill your memory (after clean, uninstall app)
Have done some flashing on my S4 but there i have an sd card with the rom... so excuse the stupid question but how can i do a clean install without deleting the rom i am about to flash? Do i have to partition the onboard memory?

Buy a USB OTG. You can store all the files that you need to flash.
The point of a clean install is to wipe the system files and user settings that could conflict with the new rom. So download the rom, and kernel, then wipe the system and caches, then install the rom and kernel.
