Hey guys. So I found my old captivate last night and I decided to mod it finally. I started by trying to install the cwm recovery and I had froyo so I used odin 3 one click and it set me down to eclair at 2.1-update. Then from there I downloaded the update.zip and put it on my phone. Now here is where it messes up. I try to go into recovery mode using the 3 buttons and it keeps booting like normal. Then I try to at least go into download and that does the same thing. Okay so after those two fail I try using adb shell to reboot into recovery and that says that it can't find the adb. Any ideas of what I should do now? Oh and ROM Manager didn't work either. I couldn't find it on the market and it wouldn't let me install the apk. Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance!
1. ROM manager doesn't work for cappy.
2. did you try to reflash with odin a second time?

Go here...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18370912 and use the one click With Bootloaders to upgrade to Stock Android 2.3.5 Gingerberead i897ucKK4. That will fix ur button combo problems. Then use the Utility KK4 Easy Root by Red_81 to get Root and KK4 Corn Kernel that has CWM Recovery included so that u can flash ur Rom of choice. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26710533

rename this to update.zip
place on internal sd card
reboot into recovery
press reinstall packages
then reinstall packages again. should work for you.
Well since you only have 3 posts I think ill wait to see if anyone else chimes in...don't want to do anything to my phone that would brick it

Better safe than sorry, I just started contributing after quite some time now so I do not blame you one bit.
However...
That link is the CWM recovery for 2e bootloaders.
What ROM are you using?
You can always get ODIN 1.82 and flash an optimized kernel like hardcore's speedmod K9A which already has CWM.
EDIT: haha or you could just ODIN one-click to stock, root, and go CW Rom manager and from there flash recovery. I know that will work 100%, but that link is just a shortcut through all that nonsense.
Just flash clockworkmod recovery.
I had this problem the other day when I was trying to flash a new rom. I tried flashing CWM many times to no avail.
Like one of the previous repliers said, I flashed the speedmod kernel which had CWM already. The kernel can be found here.
Use Odin to flash it. After that, i could boot manually to CWM, but when i tried to boot to it through rom manager i was pushed to the stock recovery. In that case, I simply flashed my rom manually with CWM.
Theres also a good video on this for the i9000 which worked for me:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7xV0yE9ZcA
Hope this helps.
I've downloaded ROM manager and clicked on 'flash clockwork recovery'. this placed a 'update.zip' onto my phone. I downloaded a custom ROM and placed this zip in the same place. in ROM manager i choose install from sd card, locate the custom rom and select it. i reboot into clockwork recovery mode and i get the 'android system recovery mode' The options at the top are in blue. i believe this is wrong?
I'm led to believe i should click on 'apply sdcard:update.zip' but when i do i get
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Install aborted
I'm using a samsung galaxy s with the standard orange rom.
Any ideas?
U need to root your device first... flash a kernel like speedmod and it'll rot ur device after this u can install ur custom rom. remember while flashing via odin repartition should be unchecked
You would root and then just need to flash update.zip, dont place rom anywhere near it. I would delete your current update.zip and go through process (minus rom) again.
Alternatively and easier, is what ^^ he said.

I've already rooted my phone.
Dont i need to put the downloaded mod on my sdcard to install it? :/
Rom manager puts the update.zip file there but when i try to run it it fails :/
Yep place the rom into sdcard/
Sometimes in stock recovery, you may have to choose flash update.zip twice to install cwm
However
Mate, if you can use odin, just flash a pre rooted kernel with cwm installed. Should take about 5 mins to download and flash. Chainfire would probably be my recommendation.
Make sure you read kernel flashing instructions before you start.

Meant to edit above.

I used superoneclick.
bad move?
Not at all, just curious. Can you not force download mode via adb? (havent needed to use it myself, so can't advise further)
i would suggest you apply the 3 button combo fix though before proceeding. If you can get into dl mode, its nigh impossible to brick, if not, then its all too easy.....
Dont rush mate, have a good search and read-up first.
Hope I've helped some.

I'll take a look at the 3 button combo fix and the adb method.
Thanks for all your help
No worries. Cwm method will only work with 2e recovery - if you have 3e, then you will need dl mode odin and kernel.

I've searched everywhere but can't seem to find an answer to this as it seems no one else has the issue. For starters this only happens when I don't have a custom kernel with cwm installed so maybe that's the problem but I want to clarify this for myself. When I'm in a stock froyo rom without cwm installed and go into recovery mode using the button combo I get into android recovery 2e. And once I'm.in that I can highlight different options but I can not select anything at all! Its as if the power button doesn't work at all. OK so fine lets pull battery out n reboot. When I try that, it boots back into recovery. Or if I do the button combo to go into download mode I can do that. But that's all I can get the phone to do. If I'm on stock gingerbread with 3e recovery and go into recovery I can select things at least but not in 2e. And the only way I can get cwm to replace android recovery is with a custom kernel installed. Cwm works fine. Any help or anything would be appreciated.
No one have any ideas?
?? Maybe Odin back to Eclair 2.1, then use Kies to update to the official Froyo 2.2
Idk, just suggesting that may fix whatever the issue is...
There r links below my signature...

Can u suggest me best method to get back my phone in normal or else installation procedure for Cyanogenmod..
Can you still boot into recovery or download mode?

Thanks in advance.
Ram
Simply flash again with ODIN a stock Firmware, Root it and flash the ROM you want ??
Yes, flash stock with odin, or simply go into recovery wipe cache, go into mounts and wipe system, datadata, & data and try to reflash. If it does not work you should flash stock with odin and tripple check that you got the right files for your phone

I had a stock I9000 with 2.3.4 XXJVQ. I rooted it with CF-ROOT 3.7 using these instructions: androidadvices.com/root-samsung-galaxy-gt-i9000-android-234-xxjvq-firmware/3/ and CF-Root-XX_UNK_JVQ-v3.7-CWM3RFS.tar and Odin3 v1.7 from the provided archive.
These worked all right and it also installed CWM 2.0
Then I downloaded CM7.1 stable from here: cyanogenmod.com/devices/samsung-galaxy-s and followed the instructions here to install: wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide#Method_via_Recovery
I wiped the data, wiped the cache and then selected "Install zip from sdcard" and then I choose the CM7.1 zip file and after a few seconds the phone entered a reboot cycle. For a moment the Cyanomodgen logo and the Samsung logo appeared, then a few lines of text, and then it rebooted and did the same.
I've waited about 10 minutes and nothing changed, and then proceeded to install CF-ROOT again via Odin thinking that it would solve it and revert back to what I had. Boy, was I wrong! Now it just hangs on the Samsung logo screen.
The phone still enters Download mode, so from what I've read it's recoverable, but I'm kinda scared to try anything else without knowing for sure that it would work because I don't want to brick it harder.
Since I'm a new user, the forum won't let me link properly. Sorry.
Any advice? Thanks.

Can you get 3 button recovery again? If you can just reflash cm7
Instead of reflashing the kernel through Odin you should have taken out the battery. Then 3 button comboed back into recovery and reflashed cm7
If you can't get into recovery again reflash a stock rom with odin.. then a kernel then has cwm recovery.. reboot into recovery mode then flash cm7.. and if you get the same boot loop as before pull the battery, 3 button into recovery and flash cm7 again.. then you will be good to go

First time I entered CWM using the CWM app and selecting "reboot into CWM". Is there another combo besides home+vol down+power for dl mode?
Could you recomend a good stock ROM?
Thanks

volume up, home and power will give you recovery when your phone is turned off..
Any stock gingerbread will do when trying to go to cm7

The first time you flash CM7, you might need to flash it twice. AKA
1) Flash once
2) Reboot. Now you are stuck in bootloop.
3) Pull battery. Go into recovery mode again
4) Flash cm7 again
5) Should boot normally now.
It's a common occurrence.
Oops beat me to it
It doesn't go into recovery anymore (home+vol up+power). I'll try to flash a stock ROM with Odin and see how it goes.
Edit1:
For people having this problem. I've flashed using the ROM and instructions here:
androidadvices.com/update-samsung-galaxy-i9000-official-gingerbread-235-xfjva-firmware/2/
This is 2.3.5 XXJVT
Edit2:
I've went to this thread:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
and got the proper CF-ROOT for XXJVT and flashed it with Odin3 v1.7
Edit3:
I've installed CM7.1 using the instructions linked in the first post and everything worked out fine. Thanks everybody.
