Voodoo without a kernel that has it cooked in it already isn't free on the market.
CWM recovery comes by flashing a kernel. I highly suggest you go read the stickies.
Hello I am new in this forum, hercules avenged from the samsung, I have just obtained a samsung captive android 2.2, I already have it root but only it is necessary to me to install the cwm recovery to install rom personalisadas, my question is it is possible to install a kernel cwm with the app SGS flasher kernel that you find in the mecado without need to use the odin as it is done by some devices samsung of models galaxy
as BWolf56 wrote, go read the stickies in captivate Q and A forum.
you shouldn't be posting a Q in general forum, so good idea to read forum rules, too.
SGS flasher isn't in the stickies because it can't give you cwm recovery on captivate. User comments on Google play would tell you as much.
go get GB stock with KK4 kernel rooted - again read the sticky 'How to flash any rom' in Captivate Q and A forum

Hi Guys
I am upgrading to a SGS i9000. Previously had a Motorola Milestone, custom kernel is new to me.
I've been searching and couldn't find anything. I want to load gingerbread XXJVK and use SpeedMod Kernel. Will this cause any problems? If I do experience problems would it be straight forward to go back to stock kernel?

Speedmod is a kernel designed to run with Froyo, not Gingerbread. Many custom 2.3.3 ROMs have you install Speedmod as an intermediary step just to get CWM installed, but it will not work with JVK. You will need to install one of the kernels specifically designed to support JVK.
I STRONGLY suggest you read the many threads posted here about JVK and the process of flashing to it, AFTER you have read the stickies about flashing ROMs on the i9000. Foreknowledge is always better than Support Calls.

Thanks for the advice. I keep going back to the stickies about flashing ROMs to i9000. I guess I will keep reading.
I would wait for the release of Gingerbread . Once its released the devs are going to have a more complete set up to work with .

There's no source to work from... so there's no speedmod as of now. Your best shot could be supercurio's hacked JVK kernel which can convert partitions to ext4. But remember, the rom is still a beta.
My SGS came today. I'm going to look at flashing darky's rom tonight.
I have Cyanogenmod7 RC3 on my milestone at the moment but I don't think I'll miss the 2.3 features.
Again thanks everyone for the advice
hi guys,
i'm a noob.

i'm using galaxy S i9000.

is theer anyway to upgarde to v2.3 with rooted kernel??
many thanks
Hi,
I finally got a Samsung Galaxy S after finding a great a deal on it. I'm aware that there are several ways on how to root this device. However, due to that I don't know which to use.
Currently I'm running on 2.2.1 Froyo XXJPY with Kernel Version of [email protected] #1.
I'm not totally clueless about rooting as I've done it already on my HTC Wildfire.
Could someone please advise me which is the most up-to-date and safest method of rooting? Link would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I'm a bit confused about installing ROMs. I used to use CWM on my HTC Wildfire which was incredebly easy to do. Would it be the same on my Galaxy S?
I'm planning to test out MIUI, DarkysROM and such ROMs. Would these ROMs have the LAGFIX feature integrated in them as well?
I apologise if a thread like this has already been posted a thousand times but I just can't come up with a definite answer.
Thanks in advance.
I have a galaxy s Vibrant the I9000M and I rooted and unlocked mine today using SuperOneCick and then The Galaxy s unlock by helroz on the app market took a grand total of 6 minutes
Thank you! Now, that's one down.
Now just want to know about flashing ROMs e.g. MIUI, DarkyROM and such.
Do I need to root my SGS first to be able to flash custom ROMs?
I also noticed that you would also have to flash firwares and kernels. Do I need to this before flashing custom ROMs?
Thanks in advance.
In order to flash a custom rom you need to have clockworkmod (CWM) recovery.
and from that its easy
As for the newer rom's here, they are all 2.3.x, so in order to get from 2.2.1 JPY, you will need to flash a stock rom 2.3.x with bootloaders via Odin.
use this link to read about odin and flashing with it. its a great guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596
to find stock rom's - they are in the general section. and custom rom's in the dev section.
read a little and after that have fun!!
And keep in mind every rom has its little guide, read those before you flash any.
Hi,
Many thanks for replying. Can I follow the video below made by a fellow XDA member direct from 2.2.1 to 2.3.4 via Odin?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lO3Y86N2p0&feature=BFa&list=FLqhM0qK4aVsLmWAA_YYhBCA&lf=mh_lolz
So I will Download stock JVQ from Samfirmware > Download Odin > Flash a stock 2.3.4 JVQ > Install chosen Kernel with CWM > Flash chosen ROM using CWM.
When would I need root then?
Is that right?
This reminds me when I had my Samsung Tocco. Pretty much same procedures.

That is right... basically when you flash a kernel with CWM you get root access. it's one of the features of a custom kernel. some of them activate it on there own and in some you need to activate it your self from the recovery (very simple).
And all the custom rom's come with root access, so in following the steps you wrote, you will get the root access with the custom kernel, and again in the custom rom.
Thanks for everyone's help. I'm now running Armetris 3.6.1 with Semaphore Kernel.
Just a question though, with my phone rooted, lagfix enabled, flashed with custom ROM and such, can I just simply go back to stock ROM? e.g. JVQ/JVR using Odin without any problems?
It is suggested to disable lagfix before changing rom's and kernel's
I know some how would say it is not a must when you use odin, but i always disable it before doing changes. I like to keep it safe.
sorry for this nooob question....
new to the samsung gt i9000, do i need to create a gold card before i do anything else????
sorry to be a bit thick but im used to htc
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I'm currently running on Semaphore Kernel but I can't find any Lag Fix option on my phone? There isn't any on CWM Recovery as well.
I thought when you use EXT4 and convert it, Lag Fix would show up but I found nothing, so I just converted back to RFS.
So, I'm fine to directly go back to 2.3.4 JVQ even even I have a custom Kernel and custom ROM?
Thanks in advance!

If you used the EXT4 app and converted to RFS then you have disabled the lagfix.
The lagfix changes the filesystem from RFS to EXT4. so when you converted to RFS yoh disabled it.
So,yes you are good to go.

Gold card?? what??
Also, If I were to flash a JVS Based ROM do I need to be on stock JVS and a JVS Kernel to flash it?
Once on I'm on JVS custom ROM can I just go back again to JVQ stock (Older firmware) without problems?
Really appreciate all your help Bork84!
Basically using odin you can change to JVS and JVQ no problem.
As far as custom rom, from what I know it does not matter on which 2.3.x you are, thay all have the same bootloders. so technically you dont need to be on stock JVS to flash a JVS custom rom.
but I am not an expert on that.
from my experience, i flashed to a JVR (2.3.4) custom rom via CWM from a 2.3.3 stock rom, and didn't had any problems.
So i cant give you a 100% answer
Guys, recently bought galaxy S i9000 with froyo
Now i wanna switch of a ICS rom which is stable and bugless with ofcourse battery life..
So how can i upgrade.
Plz guide
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA.
You will want to root your phone first, look in i9000 General on how to do that.
Then, look in the i9000 Development forum for an ICS ROM and follow instructions.
I think you need GB bootloaders first. Best is to upgrade with kies to GB->root->flash ICS.
Go to chainfire kernel thread in development section.there you will get all the steps to root your phone. Then go to ics ROM of your choice i would recommend CM9 or team nyx...open the thread you will get the info how to flash...you will have to flash twice...and it's done
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
Okay i will update first to GB via kies and then root it and with CWM i will flash custom ICS, correct step ?
Yes it is
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
any suggestion for better baseband and good ics with battery backup?
Complete Guide
Go to this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
Download the respective kernel according to your firmware.
Flash the kernel with odin
Now choose the ICS rom of your choice i would recommend CM9 ,Tiger(new but worthy.)Download the rom from the thread .Put the zip in internal storage .
Wipe.Flash the zip via CWM .Wipe.Then flash the zip again .
You can go this thread :

Hello everybody
Please forgive me if my english is not good
This is my first post in the XDA forum, and after more than day to read a lots of interresting posts, i'm completly lost...
I have a GN with the last stock rom from Samsung (4.0.4 XXLRG - Open Germany) and it's rooted.
When i look into the XDA CyanogenMod thread, I read that:
- I STRONGLY RECOMMEND TO FLASH FROM A CF-ROOTED STOCK GINGERBREAD ROM, JUST TO AVOID YOU HARD BRICKS.
And in the CynogenMod Wiki, this:
- This guide assumes the device is already running stock Ice Cream Sandwich available from Samsung. If the Samsung Galaxy Note already has the ClockworkMod Recovery installed, skip this section.
I'm confused....
What's the best way to install CM9 on my note ?
> going back to a "safe" GB rom ?
> keeping my Stock rooted ICS rom and start the install of CM9 ?
Thank you in advance for your replys.

I posted here because the "General" forum isn't that visited.
I tried finding the files needed to Install CWM for my Samsung Galaxy S gt i9000 2.2 Froyo,
but the files needed to put in Odin are missing or have been deleted from the web-hosting services.
Can anyone provide me with the needed links and a detailed guide on how to do it?
Many thanks in advance, jvukosav.
If you'll settle for 2.3.6 or want to go to ICS 4.0.4 (CM9), here is a guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852546&highlight=jw4
If you want CM10 (4.1.2) after you have CM9 it's: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778526
First you should backup EFS, verify download mode, recovery mode, just to be prepared for possible hiccups.

wow yeah you are digging for some really old files. You can try the speedmod kernel for Froyo
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756&highlight=speedmod
Though it probably has more feature than what you are looking for. Beware of the lagfix though. I don't think universal lag fix is automatically activated, but just to be sure check the settings in recovery mode.
The chainfire kernel download links are still active, and I think they might be closer in nature to what you want (a stock kernel with CWM features)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
I have never used chainfire kernels, but they are meant to be the base of most other custom kernel before cyanogenmod was ported over to I9000.
