Screen brightness effects on the battery - Nexus 4 General

I was curious just how much battery a dim screen conserves and I ran a simple test.
The result showed that the screen at the lowest brightness setting drains the battery about half
as fast as with the screen at full brightness.
To ensure nothing else was affecting the test I put my phone in "Airplane mode" and killed all running apps.
For each test I restarted the battery stats to confirm that background apps were not draining the battery.
Indeed, at the end of each test other processes showed insignificant battery drain compared to one caused
by the display. I set the phone to go to sleep after 30min of inactivity, I opened the text Messaging program
because it has a very WHITE background, then I set the desired brightness level and left the phone alone.
I checked the battery drain 30min later when the screen went off.
1) 30min @ minimal display brightness = battery drain was 4%
2) 30min @ full display brightness = battery drain was 9%
My test method is in no way perfect and much more data is needed to draw hard conclusions but
there seems to be a great benefit in setting the display brightness very low.

He's right. Thanks. It is nice to have actual data.

Dude you don't need any more data, its bloody obvious!!!!!!
That's like driving slow verses driving fast, its clear which uses more fuel. LOL

That's not entirely accurate. Fuel consumption is more about rpm's. I can keep it in 2nd and go 40mph or go to 4th and go 55. The lower rpm will burn less fuel.

Very true. I've noticed my battery drain fluctuates for no apparent reason. One day I'll see 9% drain in 30min, another I'll see 12+%. This is constantly day after day, week after week with very close use/task habits. I would chalk it up to task usage if my habits weren't so regular (basically gmail/browser/tapatalk).

I was actually going to do a test like this myself. Thank you for this post.
And to the people who are spamming this thread because they think it's obvious: you do realize you can read a thread without being obligated to reply, right? If you don't care, why post a massive image that just annoys other readers?

The image I posted is exactly how I felt, a picture is worth a thousand words :good:
When I reading it I was like okay this guy is on to something... then after reading it I was just like uh... so you mean to tell me... If I use less brightness I use less power? If I use max brightness I use more power?
Thats like turning on all the lights in my place and wondering why my power bill goes up.
Now if you do a test like Auto Brightness vs 30% brightness then it would be more interesting as auto brightness can save battery but it could also drain more depending on the length of time in that specific environment lighting. As opposed to 30% brightness which looks good in most lighting but may be a little too bright in the dark and a little too dim outside.
Also I'm not the smartest person in the world, but if I read something and I don't get anything out of it then I will speak out my how I feel... and if I don't even bother then that means its completely a waste of my time, so with that being said, yes I do care, hence the reply. :good:

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.
Auto Brightness tests are irrelevant outside the discrete time and place of the test. Such a test is invalid.

The reason for such tests is to give some idea of the battery drain rate. When people have a better idea
of how the screen drains the battery they can make better choices about using their phones.
But mostly I'm just curious and having fun.
Granted, a short screen test of an idle pone isn't very useful.
Some other ideas that I have are watching a video, or continuously reloading a web page to
simulate web surfing on different brightness settings. Since the brightness doesn't appear to
be linear I'm most interested at the following (estimated) brightness values - 0%,5%,10%,25%,50%,100%
If you guys want to post your own tests here I will update the OP.

It is an LCD, displaying white doesnt affect the battery, that only affects OLED, the backlight shines the same amount regardless of the color including black
The only point to this that I can see is to find the highest brightness level before the curve jumps way up. Everyone knows lowering the brightness even a little consumes dramatically less power than full brightness.

Did you not read what i posted or you only quote the sentence you want to reply to.
"Now if you do a test like Auto Brightness vs 30% brightness then it would be more interesting as auto brightness can save battery but it could also drain more depending on the length of time in that specific environment lighting. As opposed to 30% brightness which looks good in most lighting but may be a little too bright in the dark and a little too dim outside."
Pretty much what that means is depending on where you're at, will affect the drain. If you're in a dark place, the brightness will lower a little so its not too bright = less power, if you're in a light/outside place it will increase brightness to compensate for the glare. Now if you compare that to a 30% brightness, it will always be the same constantly, if you're outside you may even have to increase it and end up leaving it to those settings thus convenience factor comes into play having to revert it back. But most of the time Auto Brightness drains a little more (you're not always in dark place) and since the settings arent perfect it will be a setting that you dont want. Testing this I put my phone at 30% in a low light room. It was still bright on the eyes, put it on auto and it dimmed lower, thus low light room = lower battery usage.
So in comparison between tests, an auto vs 30% is more subjective because not everyone lives in the same environment/lighting and time of day, which i still think is more interesting than when we say minimum display vs maximum display brightness which is pretty obvious.
But rest assure I'm just gonna drop it... If the people who read this thread didn't know that using more brightness = uses more battery/less brightness = uses less battery then disregard my reply and you did a good service to the people of XDA :good:

Cool! I love to see actual numbers. I just got my Nexus 4 (16GB) and at full brightness, it's at least twice as bright as my old Moto Defy.

Auto brightness on this phone is too dark.
I use 50% and still get great battery life

Incorrect. Even ordinary LCDs have differing power consumption for different pixel hues. Just very little.

Blacks and whites are irrelevant
I repeated the same test at full brightness on a black screen and this time I got 8% battery drain in 30min.
Previously a white screen drained 9% so it seems "idividebyzero" is correct - the color doesn't matter as much.

AW: Screen brightness effects on the battery
My N4 uses 6.5% per hour at 10% brightness on WiFi.

Anyone who watches QI will know that the blindingly obvious is not always the case so I thank the OP for this post.

Battery Life, How is it doing.

Just wondering what other people are getting. With light to moderate use it took me 19hrs to get to 26% remaining and that is with some movie watching taking some 3D Photo's watching some 3D Video from youtube and playing a game or two here and there. Anyway I have not actually done anything to get that amount of life just for those that might ask, no special App No Extended Battery etc.
Battery life is getting better, still not great but since I'm always near a charger I don't really have trouble in that respect.
Yea I have noticed that too the longer it stays on and the longer I have it the better the battery life is getting. Than again that happens when you flash roms a lot too also depends on what you have running etc etc. So I guess I should not be surprised to see a fluctuation of 20-40% difference between user's.
My battery life has been dismal to say the least. I was really liking this phone but with no access to a charger I am afraid I will have to bring it back. Mine seems to drop battery sitting in the box turned off. Maybe its defective?

battery life = fail. I really wanted to like this phone and got it as an iphone 4 replacement. so far there are several things I dont like about it and battery life in probably number one.
Well from what I have read on a different part of this there is a 1930 mah (whatever its called) battery you can get that doesn't require modifying the case of the phone. I can only assume that would help those that are having issues with battery life. Also I am guessing once we get some custom Rom's running that will also help quite a bit considering I think 2.3.3 or one of those had some mods to help battery life issues that froyo had.
My battery life sucks, but I'm on it constantly so I understand. I love the phone still. Bad thing about android devices is the battery life. But I'm not going back to an iphone or blackberry! A better phone > battery life.

Here is what my batter looks like after a while. Its currently at 79% on the stock battery.
I usually have very heavy usage on my phone, but as you can tell not too much in the past 17hrs.

As you can tell the system manages to use up a lot of the battery.
This was def changed on my Captivate with a custom rom, with great results to the battery life.
So I can image with an upgraded rom and an upgraded battery(coming this week) this phone should def do damn well!
I have also just installed SuperPower to help manage some of the data items and such when the phone screen is off to maximize battery life. For those that have SetCPU you can also do the smae things with a little more customization.
Can you care to share your super power settings?

Used Titanium Backup to remove bloatware.
Oh and I also use a black background
hope this helps improve your battery life.
LOL...a lot of these settings don't work for me... I actually use my phone Haha.
I could see a few being useful though...which is why I haven't responded with "why not just toggle airplane mode"
It was my understanding background choice does not affect this type of screen. Brightness does but do some tests. You background shouldn't have an ill affect on battery life unless amoled screen

but today i just got my 1980 mah battery in the mail.. so im excited to see what kind of usage i get out of it now!!!

Omg the battery life sucks so much, is there anything I could do to fix this, its terrible... Like I would fully charge it then use it for 5 minutes and it will drain to about 5-6%

You've gotta be a bit more specific than that. Exaggeration prevents us from helping you.
A few basic questions:
What ROM are you on?
Describe your "us[ing] it for 5 minutes".
Take a screenshot of your battery use screen and post it here or something (both the expanded graph and the app list would be good enough).

Do you have GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth, Brightness maxed out, Downloading multiple things at once while playing multiple games or something?
Have you tried recalibrating your battery?
i have experienced amazing battery life on my Vivid, running Rum Float Beta 1, I can browse the web, play store, and download a few things over the course of two hours and my battery MIGHT drop down to 97% at the ,most.
Calibrated my battery stats though and let it fully cycle a few times.
just in case you don't know how.
Step 1: Let battery get VERY low.
Step 2: Boot into CWM Recovery.
Step 3: Clear battery stats (Advanced Settings > Clear Battery Stats)
Step 4: Reboot device.
Step 5: Let battery die fully.
Step 6: Plug in, do NOT turn on until FULLY charged.
Step 7: Before turning it on, boot into recovery and clear your battery stats once more.
Step 8: Use phone as normal, until battery gets critically low.
Step 9: Mercilessly kill your battery. Charge w/o turning it on again.
Step 10: When fully charged you may turn it on normally and resume regular usage.
That should help a bit with your battery issues. I know mine was dying pretty easily before I did the above.

Im still looking for ways to extend the battery even further.

Yes it is but i don't get near that with heavy use or if i get alot of email's etc.
At 14 hours today its down to 14% right now.Loading webpages and facebook really drains it quick.Plus watching videos.I wish there was a way to disable the led i think this would help greatly.I have all the notification flash settings off for everything but it still flashes when i get an email or missed call.
I managed to get even more time on one charge.Used the phone on WIFI most of the time during this charge and it seemed to do even better.
One Day One Hour & Seven Minutes with 14% left
On stock battery I struggle to get 6 hours.
However, this weekend I was able to get 16 HOURS!
What was the difference? This weekend I was on vacation. I talked much less on it and I was out of 4G area.
All the tweaking with screen brightness, data connections, CPU speed all make a small difference in comparison to voice.
Look at battery screenshots of people with long battery life. They don't talk on the phone. If you want good battery life,
get a bigger battery. Motorola gets it.... they doubled the size of their Razr Maxx battery. You'll see more of these 3000mah+ battery phones in the future.

also i've found out if you turn off auto-sync it helps alot. i turned off auto-sync recently and expierienced at least a 2-3 hour increase in battery life
The issue is the battery size is absolutely ridiculous. Why in gods name they put such a small battery on an lte phone is beyond me. And alot of other htc phones at least have a name brand extended battery where you can still get a case. Me personally I have an aftermarket second battery and external charger as well as an external battery but it gets old. I'm not that bad but I probably if I'm lucky get 8 hours a charge. I really think ultimately its why I might look for something else when I get caught up financially, probably a nexus.
I just got better battery stats in hopes I can locate the source of the problem

[Q] Reg. Battery Drain Issue

Hi all,
I have created this thread to get some review & advice regarding combinations of kernel & Rom for this phone. I have tried many combinations on the phone but the battery drain issue is there and battery work for only 6 to 7 hours in very normal use. Right now I am on JB XXLPZ rom & CoCore 4.4 kernel. My daily use is normal and battery statestics shows that my screen uses 60 to 65% of the battery where I have set the briteness of the screen on Auto adjust mode. Please suggest best combination which should work for performance of battery and ofcourse speed also as my current combination has made the phone little lagy and slow in compare to the stockrom I was using DDLK2.
Please help and give suggestions.
Thanks in Advance.
Use search, similar thread was opened few days ago...

AW: [Q] Reg. Battery Drain Issue
First of all deactivate auto screen brightness, it uses very much battery. Set it to a low level, you can always set it higher if needed.
I use lq4 + cocore 4.4 and just use stock gov and sched and have no battery problems.
Wifi needs less battery than mobile data. Use it whenever possible.
If you're not using Internet stop all connections. It drains battery most.
Get dark wallpaper, white backgrounds use more battery.
In my opinion the different govenors don't make much difference in battery life. Unless you use performance or powersave.
It's you who can influence the battery life much with your behaviours.
So stop autosync (you could use an APP for timecontrolled syncs)
Stop autobrightness
Stop internetconnections when possible or switch to wifi.
Get dark background.
Stop haptic feedback.
Watch this Screenshot. I had wifi off The most time but used it for calls and messaging.
At the end of the graph i started playing some games so...
More than 17 hours.

good post, really
concerning the dark background, you are really right. AMOLED-screens need (lcd not) more power for brighter pixels and subpixels. so avoid light screens. choose a dark whatsapp background (i think you use whatsapp, who does not ). choose dark backgrounds and bright font if your able to do.
disable sync you dont need. imho you shouldnt disable contact sync and calendar sync. it drains not too much power.
one last advice: avoid to look to your phone every five mins and look if somethings changed at facebook this drains your battery
Two things
One
I thinks there is no much dofference between 0 brightness and 100, i mean, about battery wasting, even with no brightness has the same wasted percentages in the battery stats.
Two

sorry but if u are using an AMOLED display this is not true. an AMOLED pixel produces light. As more brightness you want as more power is consumed. Otherwise an LCD display needs less power for brighter pixels because the power is needed to darken the white background panel.
Thanks a lot everyone for valueable suggestions. Let me try for 2 days and i willget back with results.

Hi there, i've tried loads of tweaks and MODs for this phone, was very disappointed with the stock samsung 4.1.2 ROM. I'd recommend Pure Vanilla, I've had very good battery life and performance results from this rom and it's being developed steadily.

Hi all,
I have created this thread to get some review & advice regarding combinations of kernel & Rom for this phone.

Did you calibrate your battery after switching between different rom? Try recalibrate battery.

Question What is your battery voltage and percent-charge?

Can y'all please dial *#0228# in your dialer apps and tell me what the voltage is and what the corresponding battery percent is?
I'm trying to also see what it is at 100%.
Thanks, just checking something.
I'm at 3.74V @ 26%.

Thanks. Please let me know your voltage if you charge to 100%.
It will vary at 100% ... or is it really 80%?
All I know for sure is it stops drawing current/increasing in voltage after reaching an indicated 100% no matter what you do.

The cell is rated for 4.45V as the cutoff, but it stops at 4.35V, which is good: https://guide-images.cdn.ifixit.com/igi/m4vrgZ3PqskbyvKM.huge

The only things I mostly look at are SOT battery usage % and temperature when charging.
It rare I charge past 80-90%, just not needed.

My S21 Ultra reliably loses 1% an hour without significant intervention on my part and with very light phone usage. I'd say that this is the standby battery loss rate. I'm fine with that. Is that a normal experience?

Sounds like there's background activity going on.
Google backup Transport and Framework maybe. I have those two always package disable and Google play Services is turn off. Google Play Services is a vampire and not often needed by me except mostly for Gmail.
Playstore is also package disabled unless needed. Location is always off unless needed.
I like to see under 1%, think I'm getting about .5% with the tap on AOD setting. It still gets texts and phone calls; not in airplane mode. Wifi is always disabled, I don't use it and bluetooth is turned off at night which is mostly for security.
I have about 86 apks always disabled, most are bloatware anyway.
This stock 10+ is heavily configured but it gives it better battery life and is more secure.
With the newer more efficient memory and CPU you should be able to do better than me. I'm running on 4 G lte only, not sure if 5 G is still an issue now or not.
This is my SOT usage right now and a lot of that was streaming vids. Ha-ha notice the Accubattery charging reporting glitch, no idea what triggered that... Adroids.

Well, what kind of "Screen Off Discharge Rate" do you face?
I'm actually quite happy with 1% an hour. It is rather consistent too: 5G or LTE or WiFi -- all the same.

If you're using your device to it's full potential, without handicapping any of it's major functions, 1% per hour seems about at par with what i get on WiFi at home. This goes up to around 2% per hour when I have my Galaxy Watch connected to the phone via BT, and I'm at work, connected to 4G.
I have a Galaxy Tab S7 too, which is always synced to the S21U for "Calls and Messages on other devices" setting, and Seamless Earbud Connection enabled on the Buds Live and the Buds Plus, that allows them to automatically jump between the phone and the tablet depending on which device i pick up and start using. I also have Your Phone app running in the background, that connects my phone to my Windows laptop for calls, messages and notifications. My setup allows a close integration among all my devices and I can take calls or continue work on anything at home with a screen.
I'm using Dual SIMs, both on LTE, WiFi and BT always on, Auto-Sync enabled, FHD+ (my eyes couldn't appreciate the difference between FHD+ and WQHD+), Adaptive Refresh Rate, Auto-brightness enabled, and no debloating except what Device Care automatically puts to sleep/deep sleep. And with all this going, I've never run out of battery in a day, so far. If I were to use only the phone screen for everything, then maybe SOT would've mattered more - but I jump between devices at my convenience and my use-case scenario, and i like that flexibility and freedom. Samsung is the only non-apple company that makes such a cohesive eco-system currently across these many device categories.
So as long as my phone makes it to the end of the day (when everything gets plugged in anyway), I'm not looking to cripple any functionality on this expensive glass and silicon sandwich. I just want to get my money's worth...
So for my specific use case, I'm happy leaving the phone running everything it is capable of, while sipping a little battery in the background. YMMV.

My outlook is the same.
By the way, you might want to try Samsung Flow from the Microsoft Store. I find it to be loads better than Your Phone. It has every feature I would want. Drag and drop into a folder in the Files App. Control apps / screen remotely. Clipboard connection ON/OFF. And, more.

I tried it right after i got the phone but found the Your Phone integration a little better for calls, messages and notifications. Flow was better at file transfer definitely, but because most of my services are cloud based, I rarely require an actual inter-device file transfer.
But this was months ago, and maybe Flow has improved over time.
Thank you for the suggestion, I will try it out once again and see how it works for me.

Question Asus zenfone 8 , I purchased a new Asus zenfone 8 dual SIM 2weeks ago . But the battery life is just shocking. Had anyone have any thoughts on this ?

Hi all
Just wondering if anyone who has an Asus zenfone 8 are having trouble with the battery life ?
Thank you

I'm not sure about everyone. I heard from some people on stock about 6-7 hours SoT, but i don't know how. 5-6 sound much real)

5-6 sounds about right . That's very disappointing considering it's a 4000amh battery . I would have expected slot more hours.
I find the battery life ok but in need of some tweaks (hopefully) on AOD, 2t2w, wakelocks, cpu governors and so on.
Hopefuly they'll put the effort into it.
In my usage, i shut off the 2nd sim when i don't need it, aod, 2t2w/fingerprint is on (w/out the aod icon), reception set on 3g w/ occasional 4g, 120hz (not that much of an impact) but i restrict some of the apps that pool lots of resources and (with a few exceptions) i have most of the battery optimizations on (adaptive bat, managed auto-start aps, bg app mgmt, w/ bat draining apps off.
On an average day outdoors, spotify streams on very high most of the time to BT (aptx hd), some occasional pics/videos, plenty of instagram, some browsing and some youtube. I usually go to sleep w/ 20-30% left. Charging is done w/ shed charging and ultra steady charging during sched charging.
It is my opinion that the screen on very high brightness just eats through battery (I mostly avoid extended usage in direct sunlight).
While excluding the 120hz refresh rate, second battery hogs after the screen would be the 2t2w, aod and the general standby opptimizations.
I hope they'll address some of these but otherwise I pretty much love the tiny guy - there had to be a comproomise for the specs and pricepoint.

I think 5-6hrs with moderate usage is alright
First of all it has an 888 and flagship socs in general are known to have an higher battery consumption plus the higher refresh rate (and depends if you use 5g all the time or if you get a better reception in your area and other usage)
You can optimise some stuff in Asus autostart manager, disable aod (which consumes quite a bit of battery) and some other stuff and get slightly better battery life though
But Asus might optimise battery further with otas though
I got a root. After that, I changed the minimum frequencies of the processor (they are high in the drain, no matter what mode we choose). Chosen by a conservative governor. Removed all Google software. I set the refresh rate to 60 Hz. Disabled AOD. Sim one is 3g, the other is 2g. But I still get the same 5-6 hours. I have a suspicion that the reason for the fast discharge is the radio module.

By the way, what SAR level ZF8 has?
I have good signal 4G and 3G where my previous Note20 Ultra (865+) was often switching to 2G.

SAR value (head): 1,412 W/kg, SAR value (body): 1,582 W/kg (source)
I've attached the official SAR test report of the Zenfone 8, if anybody's interested.
Had mine a full day and the battery is appalling! Come from a p30 with bigger screen, smaller battery and less efficient soc and the ZenFone is draining about 40% faster. Came on here to ask the exact same question!!
Its strange, ZF8 has 4000 mah battery and battery is pretty poor. Seems asus lags behind in optimizing their software
Has there been any software update from Asus that improves the battery life? I've been reading that the battery is a big issue. I'm split between getting this phone or the Pixel 5. I'm currently using a s21U and have been using big screen phones the last few users but I'm ready to switch to a more compact phone, it's rare to find one nowadays. The market has more demand for big screen phones nowadays unfortunately and the current compact Android phone choices are very limited...
So, having used a few days now it has suddenly got much better. I'm off charge since 7am and am writing at 4pm and I'm at 80%. Not massive usage - 1 hour screen time with a little Pokémon go in between which seems pretty decent to me. I've disabled 5g, have screen on auto refresh rate and running latest firmware. I do wonder if low signal strength causes disproportionate power drain, the office saw me down to 30% by mid day work virtually no usage at all.
So I have Zenfone 8 since June and battery life is OK, I can get through a day. Saying that I am a pretty heavy user as I had to charge my pixel 3 twice in a day, while now when my father is using it, battery lasts for 2 days with 4-5h screen on time.
Here is my accubattery estimates. They have gone from 6h 10min to 6h 48m in the last week, so maybe the adaptive battery is affecting this.

Everything the same except AOD (only for night 8 hours) and auto-sync. Maybe auto-sync is the reason? It's setting in Accounts or some different auto-sync?
