My wife asked me to put her phone back to stock Samsung firmware as she didn't want CM10.1 anymore (yes, I said she was silly)
Anyway the problem is.....My computer will not recognise her phone, It's running Windows 8 are the i9000 incompatible?
I have Kies installed and it recognises my phones fine, both Samsungs.
So....I was wandering if either there is anyone that knows how to sort this out as I have tried everything I can think of. Or are there flashable ZIP packages anywhere of stock firmware I can flash through recovery?
Thank for any help

Use task manager to kill any Kies tasks that you find running, install i9000 windows driver (google search) than flash desired rom (preribly stock) via odin.
Yes, I did that just yesterday running Win8.
You can find stock roms over HERE
---------------------------------------------------
phone: i9000
rom: CyanAOSP v0.5.2
kerel: Semaphore 2.9.7s
Thanks for your quick response! I always kill kies when using Odin so that wasn't an issue. However I was under the impression that installing kies gave me the drivers so thank you for your advice I'll install i9000 drivers separately and hopefully sus it out.
Thanks mate

If I can I always flash using Heimdall on Linux - I don't have to worry about drivers.

Wrong forum.
Did you install your samsung drivers, etc? You probably have since you were able to root. Did you open up ODIN then?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
If you are able to get into download mode, then there is no problem flashing back.
i didn't use odin to Root i just put a rom on my device and then flashed it through rom manager and recovery mod

Yes, this is not Development related, its general Q&A.
If you backed up your previous ROM. you can just perform a factory reset, otherwise you need to use Odin, make sure device is in debugging mode, and flash the stock ROM found here.
Hi guys,
For the first time I wanna root my Note and would like to do it cleanly. I would like to root my Note, use custom ROMs and be able in the future to come back to a stock ROM which is upgradable via KIES.
My first question is to know if the process of downgrading to an older firmware could corrupt the EFS folder. (using PC odin)
2. Will it wipe my phone? In sammobile they don't specify if the older ROMs are wipe or non-wipe.
Thx
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
1- it shouldnt do, i have downgraded using pc odin without an issue
2 - get a non wipe rom fromthe list in the sticky in the dev section
Thx for your reply, I would also like to know:
1. If after rooting the older rom my phone will be upgradable via (recognised by) KIES.
2. If the answer of the question is YES, then what kind of back up should I do in order to be able get my phone at that "state" later on, after having tried other custom ROMs.
I'm trying to be more cautious because with my older i9000, I couldn't get it recognised by KIES after flashing different custom ROMs. My EFS folder was corrupted (empty indeed) and there was unfortunately no way back in my knowledge...

it might be but if you update via kies you will lose root
Could somebody else give me a more convincing answer?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Yes you can root your Device. Here
Just make sure you are in rootable ROM, in case if you are not in rootable ROM then u have to downgrade ROM via PC Odin.
Download rootable Stock ROM from Here
In the above Dr. Ketan's Thread he mentioned the rootable and non rootable ROMs
after Downgrading and installing CWM+Root flash any Custom ROM
You can get back to Stock ROM again without worries. Just Flash Stock ROM which is available for your country via PC Odin. (You get warranty too)
If you do everything correctly, then nothing goes wrong.
They are many ROMs available in above thread and Dr.Ketan marked some ROMs as Wipe or Non Wipe.
I've downgraded using this KL3 firmware (india)
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/137391605/31899b9/N7000XXKL3_N7000ODDKL1_INU.zip.html
I don't know why but my phone is no longer upgradable by KIES. It shows "Your device does not support software upgrading via KIES"
Anyway, next step is rooting
Better news, after the downgrade, I rooted the phone using this method:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJjh6gi0Spw
It rooted my phone without any problem.
After, I did a complete backup using Titanium Backup then backed up my EFS Folder using the "root explorer" app (copy and paste the folder) and via the desktop app "ESF Pro" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546
After that I upgraded to my original firmware LB1 using Mobile Odin Pro
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997&highlight=root
ROM: http://www.hotfile.com/dl/147259547/5483373/N7000XXLB1_N7000OXALB1_DBT.zip.html which is a non-wipe ROM.
I'm so glad that now the phone is upgradable via KIES, it shows that I've got the latest firmware.
If you upgrade via kies, you'll lose root. so in essence, once you're rooted, whatever kies says doesn't really matter, as you'll most likely always be using mobile odin or cwm from that point onward, assuming you want to keep root of course.

I cannot agree more with this...Don't bother with Kies now that you're rooted. Why wait for OTA/Kies updates when you can get any new Rom here at XDA a day or two after it is released?
Removing Kies scheisse from zips is the first thing I do before flashing new Roms. Needless to say, it's been removed from my PC ages ago, and replaced by Sammy USB drivers for transferring files etc.
In a word, forget Kies, you're in better hands here at XDA.

But if you update it with kies/OTA, you will lose Root. So update using CWM/Mobile odin only.

Exactly.
Even it appears on XDA before OTA, as usually OTA appears few days later to Kies release.
I understand all you're talking abt. I would probably not need to update my phone via KIES anhmore. But it could prove to be important when I want to sell the phone. I would like the new owner to be able to get updates via KIES or OTA.
By the way, after the root I have frozen many Apps which keep my ram free now and I assume that battery life will be better. Everything seems to work fine just HD widget doesn't work, it's my favourite. It says that there is not Internet connection or something like that. Could anyone know what it's about and how to fix it?

Hello.
my phone currently have stock ICS LPY. i want to use latest ALBA release. the release has a new bootloader that I need to update with odin. I tried using mobile odin. when I chose the rom file it added it under category param and I flashed it. now before I update my rom to the alba rom how do I know if it worked? I mean.. I googled and found several old posts that say that people should not update bootloader with mobile odin.
is it still the case? I must use a mobile odin on a regular pc ?
my phone works.. does it mean that I didn't break anything ?
I'm asking because I don't have a windows machine available and i really don't know how to even properly compile and execute the Heimdall frontend and I never even used it so I prefer to ask here first.
thank you!

Hello all !
I'm new to Ace. My friend just donated it to me.
After seeing the Ace for a while, i realized it's still Froyo (2.2.1). I want to upgrade it, but i use Ubuntu (Odin can't flash firmware on Ubuntu with Wine).
But, after that i remembered Heimdall, that i use to flash my Galaxy SII.
Now, the question is, does Ace supports Heimdall and vice versa ?

Hi!
For our Ace Odin and other programms are normally just used to flash stock ROMs. In all threads of custom ROMs you will find zip files which should be flashed in CWM 5: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1291327 It is much easier. But you have to do all wipes on your own.
Ace doesn't support heimdall. Go to a near by service center to get the latest firmware on your ace.

Yeah, i know about Odin. I know about stock ROM since i already own Galaxy Mini, Young, and Nexus 4. Odin can't detect phone in Ubuntu (since Wine doesn't implement USB Detecting). Will go to SSC to upgrade my firmware.

If you want a stock ROM, update using Kies. EDIT: Saw that you are using Ubuntu. Forget this.
That worked for me.
However, I recommend trying a custom ROM. That will give you Android 4.2.2 and a faster phone. Try one of these: EDIT: You won't need a computer for that.

Your phone is not officially supported by Mobile Odin. That is a risk.
If you want to continue, go to this link and download CWM-FROYO.Tar. at the bottom.

Once you downloaded the .Tar file, follow the instructions at this link.

This took me less than 10 minutes to find the information. If you have done what I said and Google it yourself, you would not need to waste your time spamming random threads throughout XDA and opening up old threads from years ago. If you can't bother to read through the links I have provided and continue to spam random threads, I will report your for spamming. If you managed to do this successfully, reply to this thread instead of opening new threads or spamming more threads. I will help you to the best I can.

Well,
Odin is a program that Samsung engineers use to directly flash the software onto a user's phone.
Example, when you go to a service center for your handphone repair, Samsung will flash your handphone's software using Odin.
Kies is a consumer based suite where you can do a lot of different things like updating software and backup.
You can either use Kies or Odin to upgrade your phone software BUT! You can only use Odin to install CWM (custom recovery).
Use Kies if you want to upgrade only, use Odin if you want to upgrade AND install custom recovery.
You need a computer for both programs. If you want to install using Odin, computer based Odin and not mobile odin, do tell me so I can help you. Using Odin can break your device if you don't do it properly.
I hope this gives you a better understanding of how Android works.
Wow it was really worthful information for me...
But bro i would like to first update using kies if it really supports my device..because i have the following aims
First update to new version to experience my new featured phone..
Second to install CWM using odin as u have said...

Sure you can update using Kies. Those who are much more comfortable with Android would directly update to the latest software version using Odin and then flashing CWM as it's much more direct.
For me personally, one of the first thing I would do when I get a new phone would be to get root, install/flash CWM and then install/flash the latest Android version using CWM. It's much more faster and convenient because I would only need to use the computer once, and that's to install CWM on my phone and I can use CWM to install a newer Android version or custom rom.
One thing to remember is that, if you have root and you choose Kies to update your phone to the latest version, you will lose your root access on your phone. So remember to install root again after you update your phone.
Second thing to remember is that, once you have updated your phone's software, PLEASE BE AWARE OF WHICH VERSION OF CWM YOU ARE FLASHING. If it's meant for Froyo, don't install it on Gingerbread and vice versa. If you don't, the installation might not be successful or YOU MIGHT EVEN BRICK YOUR DEVICE!
Thirdly, when you're using Odin to flash CWM or updating the software, please READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY! Odin has some options that you can select but most of the time you don't have to change anything. If you are unsure if it's the correct options, close Odin and rerun it. Doing that will reset the options to it's default. THIS IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT! If you try to install CWM or update your software and you selected the wrong options, you can permanently brick your device!
That's all. It's very long, I know, but since this is your first time I think it would be good to let you know of the dangers that you might face if you do things wrongly or do not follow the instructions. Glad that I can help. If you're still unsure you can just ask here again.
Yes offcourse we should know the both +ve and -ve aspects of what we are doing...but i would say, by questioning i have many more learnt than to read the other farms and also better than googled...
Also i feel confidence what i will do..
But kies should update my phone to the latest version...but is gingerbread the latest one?

You can upgrade your device to jellybean with cwm only. Before that you need to be on gingerbread, not froyo.

What he said. Samsung only provided Android upgrade up to Gingerbread for your device. You can check out his thread and follow his instructions there and install Jellybean. Once you have CWM installed, it'll take about a few minutes or so to upgrade to Jellybean via recovery. At least most of the time lol. And like he said, it'll save a lot of headaches in the future.
Bro i would like to begin with kies...no problem which one...but once i will jump to gingerbread, flash cwm and then partition as i have said you before...

Yeah. Flash CWM using Odin. Don't partition your phone using Odin though.
Flashing a jellybean custon rom should solve the problem of incompatible applications as it's a much newer version of Android than Gingerbread.
But, some custom roms requires you to flash some stuffs first if you're upgrading from Gingerbread to Jellybean.
You can always check with @Venkatesh what to flash as he's a rom developer for one of the Jellybean rons for your phone.
Ok thanks alot for helping and giving the information...

No. You need to use Odin on your computer to flash CWM. But once you have root and CWM, you can upgrade your software directly using the .zip file from your phone in recovery mode.
