64gb sd support? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I saw this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1909697 and http://www.xperiablog.net/2011/12/14/xperia-play-supports-64gb-microsd-memory-cards/
and I wonder if the Z will support 64gb sd cards. Overall it looks like a great phone but with only 16gb internal, I would never even consider it without 64gb support. Thoughts?
BTW, I searched all the forums and it doesn't look like its been talked about much.

64GB microSD cards ship formatted with exFAT by default. If I recall right, exFAT support requires the handset maker to acquire a licence from Microsoft and modify their Android ROM accordingly. Since this is an early ROM version, it's possible that exFAT support has not been added in yet.

Yes, it supports 64GB micro SD cards so long as they are FAT32 formatted.

Do you know this for a fact? Has anybody actually tested this on any of the prerelease versions of the phone?
This would make me even more tempted to pre order it be for release. If you have any links to any test of this, it would be great

All Android phones support this. With FAT32 you're always fine. Only downside is that it's limited to 4GB files.

I'm using a 64GB SanDisk MicroSDXC card in my ZL right now.

Here's a screenshot of an HTC phone which was only advertised to support up to 32GB microSD, no official ICS support and almost 2 years old now.

Now do you think Xperia Z won't support 64GB sd cards?
It's only 57gb because I partitioned it for sd-ext support.

Thanks guys for clearing this up. Any amount should be supported then, if it's in FAT32. Happy to hear this is working on the zl.
Here's another one: since 4gig+ files are not supported on fat32, how about running EXT4? Anyone tried that on Sony phones? Guess it needs to be supported on kernel level, but custom kernels might provide support for this. Anyone wants to share some views on EXT4?

In android 2.3.x
Support up to 32GB sd card(Micro SD).But this android 2.3.x.Latest version maybe can support and 64+ gb

Maybe it'll have kernel support for NTFS and exFat. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and even the older S2 have it, so I'm hoping Sony includes it too. It's not really that big of a deal for manufacturers to add support for more formats, but some of them like HTC are very stubborn about it.

ext4 support is by default supported on Sony phones since 2012 models already use ext4 as the default format on system partitions. So using ext4 for sdcard would be only tweaking the vold.fstab file to mount it properly.

ZL supports 64GB cards (specs from Sony), Z does not, only up to 32GB (also Sony specs).
I think it's best to wait until it is released and there will definitely be some people trying this.
I live in Belgium and I'd like to order the ZL but as far as I know now the ZL will not be available in Belgium.
I wait until release and if no ZL i will order the Z, for the moment I have a 32Gb card, I'll start of using this one and maybe in the future I'll have a look for a bigger card.
If it is not supported I also woder how they do it and maybe this can be avoided by installing a curstom rom one they become available.
On all my previous phones I installed cards bigger in size than officialy supported and up to now I never had any problem.

Unfortunately my ZL doesn't seem to support exFAT or NTFS. That could change before the release date, but as of right now no such luck.

The french Sony Community manager has a 64gb Sandisk sdxc on his unit. It works...

Bass is quite good. The volume can also be turned up very loud, it seems to be much louder than my Nexus 4 or GS3.

The exFAT is a windows propriety driver. So unless sony get's a license from windows then you'll get exFat support.
The NTFS is not a block type filesystem and is really bad if you're using it as a mass storage. You'll likely end up destroying your sdcard if you use NTFS for a long time so it's not enabled by default. But it would be easy to enable when devs get their hands on the kernel source.

Thanks very much for the reply, here is hoping the Z is also the same. I cannot wait.

I think kernel might be able to support it, if I'm correct,

Unfortunately I cannot discuss unreleased products and previously posted content must be removed.

64gb card
Thank you for your post, I bought the sandisk 64gb card, formated it to fat32 and it works perfectly [in fact its a bit zippier than my previously full 32 gb card which i believe was class 4]. The card was a bit pricey, but well worth it. Thanks again.
i just bought one of these and it works fine in cwm, but is not detected in android, ive tried stock 2.3.4 and leaked ics, neither wants to know of the cards existence.

When I purchased a 64GB Micro SD Card for my phone just before Christmas, it wouldn't work at all - Even when formatted to FAT32.
Its now used in an SD card adapter for my girlfriends Nintendo 3DS... So there's no chance I'm getting that back.
Can you provide the model of the card you purchased? I've got two 32GB cards for my Play currently, Both have exactly the same apps cloned between them but different caches for different games - So I have to swap over every time i want to play a game on the other card lol. xD (Most of the are ROMs mind you...)
Buying know thanks for the tip.
Fat32 can be formatted up to 2tb. That is its maximum

OK... I just got this card and transferred all the data from my 32GB micoSD to the new 64GB microSDXC... and the weird thing is that it is taking up more space on the SDXC than the SD... so I'm guessing that the problem is that it isn't formatted to FAT32... so how do I do that? Using Win7Pro, I don't see an option to format it to FAT32... any ideas?
I formatted this card with the phone but it is also possible to format it with a computer using third party format tools.
And the problem with the data which takes more space from your 64GB card than it took from your 32GB card could be related to the clustersize. Maybe the system chose a bigger size in order to have less effort to deal with the size of the card. However if there are files which are below this clustersize they are always as big as the clustersize. So the data needs more space.
Thanks for the tip I really gotta try this 64gb would practically hold my life lol

My phone has an annoying glitch where I move or delete files on the SD card, and the SD card shows that there's new space after deletion, but when I try to put in a new file, there's no space!
Every couple of months I have to transfer the files I wanna keep to my PC, then format the card to get the lost capacity back. I first noticed it when I tried putting some anime episodes on the card when it showed 2GB free, but then it said the card was full!
The aforementioned glitch only happens when I delete/move files through Android or when the storage is mounted to USB. Never happens when the card is plugged into Windows and being manipulated directly through an adapter instead of the phone.
If you guys transfer a lot of stuff on those cards, I'd suggest getting one of these
I have a red one and it's super handy when you wanna transfer, format etc. Plus it's got a keychain so if you have school, you can keep it on hand.
By using that instead I've avoided the storage issues.

If you don't plan to transfer content to that card with a usb-3 connection and a reader connected directly to the computer, it doesn't have sense to buy it.
The note it is limited to about 15mb transfer rate, so you will be throwing money out of the window.

Do you have a reference for that info? I plan to pickup a note 2 upon US release and was debating on waiting for the new Samsung high speed micro sd cards or going with Sandisk Ultra.
Daniel
You really won't see much of a difference between the Gold and Ultra cards. The important aspect of those cards are the read speeds and it's absolutely overboard for a phone. Save yourself some money and just get the Ultra w/30mb read and you'll be set. No need for anything faster.

Yeah, just spend that money on the 64GB version of the Note II. I bet the flash chips they use in the note are just as fast, without the bottleneck of MicroSD connections.

I agree that the internal memory would be superior. The problem is that it is very unlikely 32GB and 64GB models will be available upon US release or even within a few months.

agreed. The Ultra card (30mb/sec) is the absolute fastest card you will need for a phone. You won't even take full advantage of its speed but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than the Gold.
The only thing that will take advantage of write speeds when using the phone is how fast you take pictures and transfer files to the card from a computer. THAT'S IT. And technically even with that you will be limited to around the same speeds as the average USB 2.0 speed which is normally between 10mb-25mb/sec.
Don't waste your money.
The problem is many people just see whats stated on the package, and don't realize that to obtain the stated speed, you need the unit to support UHS I, and at present no phones support it, so the max speed for the card is read 25mb/s and write 24mb/s, which is the standard for micro sdhc and micro sdxc noted as the class 2, 4, 6 and 10.
Got the 64gb uhs I class 10 works fine write 11MB read 38MB second.

Not true - that's only the case for FAT32.
Stick it in a friend's Galaxy Note or S3 and get them to format it (as EXT3/4) and it works fine all the way up to the data limit.

Why not just send the 32gb card straight back? Then order the 64gb one.
I'd recommend the SanDisk one that the thread I quoted talks about - that's the one I (and others) have so we know it works.
It might also be worth trying the 64gb card straight in the XT to see if it will format to Ext 3/4 without having to put it in another (e.g. Samsung) phone to get full use of the data. I had a G-Note when I bought the card (which was initially FAT32 formatted) and had to wipe it and then reformat to get it to work, the G-Note just formatted it in the right file system standard.
Oh, and I did the same thing with memory cards on my G-Note but fortunately I have a DSLR camera so my 32gb card got re-purposed for that!

[Q] Microsd Cards

Looking to pop a 64Gb San Disk Class 10 in the GS3 LTE, but people are saying there may be issues with Samsung mobiles.
Does this sound right? I have been running the same 32Gb Kingston that was previously in the GS2 without a hitch, although now starting to get some music playback issues (hence the new card). Don't want to shell out for the 64Gb if its not really going to run well.
And next question, if I do get it, exFAT or FAT32?

exFAT and FAT32 are just file systems. You will not get any noticeable performance boost between exFAT and FAT32. The difference between them is that exFAT can assign much larger address spaces, and as such can store much larger files.
In fact, for smaller files FAT32 might even be quicker to be honest, due to the smaller records needed to be fetched when finding where a specific file is located.

I have a lot of music and I'm tired of moving files about, and I want to take a lot of movies/pictures of my kids. And yes I do back up a lot. So thats why I want a 64Gb card.
Here are my CrystalDiskMark results for the SanDisk 64GB card by the way, they were taken on my MacBook Air with its built in reader which is PCIe based so there shouldn't be much of a bottleneck on actual performance.

I have exactly this microSD in my S3 LTE and it is working fine. It reads both (exFAT and FAT32) Filesystems. exFat can store larger files if you need it.
If you have rooted and want to use easy UMS to get it connected with a drive letter to your PC, keep in mind that you might need a driver to read the exFAT on your PC. WinXP does not support exFAT by default and afaik this is also true for MAC.
Mac OS X reads (and writes of course) exFAT since 10.6.8, only pre-Win7 (perhaps vista also has support I don't know), older OS X and most Linux distributions released in 2012 (and prior of course) will require updating or installation of new software in order to read exFAT.

I have the 32 GB Sandisk red and grey card. After 2-3 months it now starts to disconect it selfe while phone is locked.. resulting in total freezes leading to soft reset to get it running. That sd seems to be extra bad!?

don't know what distro you're on but, fuse-exfat should be something you look into.
My 64GB Sandisk is working just fine. SD cards sometimes are just potluck when it comes to receiving a dud. In the past I have had around 3 dud SD cards for my camera. Just send it back and ask for a new one. =)
Ive bought a 32 GB and also a 64gb from Sandisk with 5 Year Warranty (microsSDHC with Adapter its called)
They are fast and I dont have any Problems since 2 Month with it.
exFAT is better than FAT32 in that you can have individual files that are larger than 4GB, however although most modern operating systems can read and write to an exFAT partition, you won't be able to read/write from it in an AOSP/AOKP-based ROM. exFAT drivers on Android are proprietary and licensed from Microsoft, and they're not included in non-Samsung ROMs.
If you format to FAT32 though, you should be fine. I doubt you'll have individual files larger than 4GB anyways.

There is a project--Mini MicroSD Reader for Android Smartphones & Tablets on Kickstarter. Copy introduce from Kickstarter.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/andyfei/mini-microsd-reader-for-android-smartphones-and-ta
An external card reader that enables you to use MicroSD card on your Nexus/Android tablets and Android smartphones.
It works with the following devices:
Samsung Galaxy S2, S3, Note, Note 2; Class 1 support.
Motorola RAZR M, RAZR HD, RAZR MAXX HD; Class 1 support.
HTC One X+, Evo 4G LTE (Sprint), DROID DNA; Class 1 support.
Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Google Nexus 7 & Nexus 10; Class 2 support.
Nook Color, Kindle Fire; Class 3 support.
Tablets using RockChip & AllWinner chips; Sonicview N710; Class 1 support.
Class 1: it is supported by the phone/tablet out of box, no rooting or other privileged software needed. Class 2: supported using 3rd party software such Media Importer from Play Store, with some limitations; root device and install 3rd party software such as StickMount to remove such limitations. Class 3: a custom ROM such as CyanogenMod is needed.
It should work with most other devices that support USB host or USB-OTG (On-The-Go) as long as the device maker doesn't intentionally disable such functionality. For the technically inclined, it has been tested and verified on all four major mobile SoCs(system-on-a-chip): Qualcomm Snapdragon, Samsung Exynos 3, 4 & 5, Nvidia Tegra 2 & 3, TI OMAP; as well as on RockChip and AllWinner chips.

This is exactly what i was searching a few days ago!
I think i´ll get one.
Just saw this and was coming to share it too! Some one was asking for a micro usb like thumb drive in an accessories section somewhere but I can't find it anymore.

I've been looking for one of these for like 3 years, insta buy. It's really too bad that it won't work with our Nexus 4 brethren.
Finally! I am honestly really surprised that Chinese web sites aren't flooded with such thingies already, there is every single possible connector for microUSB, except a tiny card reader!
Well, I guess being an early adopter has its costs, 12$ it is
(beware next year dealextreme is going to have them for a dollar )
Thanks for sharing the link!

This already exists and is shipping from China as we speak. I've already got one.
I can attest that this works on my N7 running CM10.1. Of course, it's sold out now ...

Another option is to pair the following two together. I've also got these and will vouch that they work on my N7

Finally, I can't vouch for this one, but I'd be tempted to get one if I wasn't building something similar myself

Any old USB SD card reader will work if you have an OTG to female USB cable. You might need StickMount, depending on your kernel, to mount it. But that is a free app from the Play Store.
The only advantage I see to this device is that it is a neat fit. No cables dangling. But it would still have to sell pretty cheap for this to make a difference. And, personally, if I had a special need to use an SD card, I would be reluctant to wait around for some future delivery.
