I'm sure I'm not the only one here who is not in the least bit dev-minded and is utterly useless at compiling/decompiling anything (tried once, ended up with a shiny expensive paperweight!), so I'm wondering if one of you superhumans could compile a version of TWRP to work with stock ROMs/kernels?
Personally, I'm using the advanced stock kernel with inbuilt CWM and am getting tired of having to use the volume + power buttons to navigate recovery. The TWRP DIY thread has instructions to compile TWRP for stock based kernels but I'm really not that brave and I dare say I wouldn't be the only one that'd appreciate it if someone could do this and post it. Any takers?
Uh it's already available on the TWRP site...

Using search is a wonderful thing
Also, posting in the right section helps. If you ask a QUESTION and want others to ANSWER it, guess where the thread should be?
And, siyah kernel is CMW based but has touch ability in it....
Thread closed and moved to Q&A. Development section is a place to post ROMs and kernels, not requests.

Can someone tell this newbie what the differences are between these two ROMS? I've currently running Eugene's (saw it first), but am curious as to what I would get (or miss) if I was to flash Team Whiskey's instead.
My biggest gripe with the Vibrant is the piss poor batter life. I run Launcher Pro and never really cared for TW.
Can someone post the biggest differences between these two ROMS so I can decide if I want to reflash? Also, I assume if I flash to Team Whiskey's Obsidian, I'll have to reload all my apps....... yet again? I have them backed up using Titanium Backup.
Thanks for helping the new kid out.
MODS, please move post to correct forum. Apologies to everyone else.
Flash both. Try both. Pick one. Post in right section.

Thanks for the link.
honestly its all personal preference... theme... included apps / removed bloatware... each rom (and theres actually one or 2 others floating around the first couple pages) offers different things... I flashed eugenes unoffical stock tmoobile rom... and like yourself i hate stock tw launcher so i installed the modified tw launcher.. which is located in the i9000 forum... (also in eugenes r10 rom... and a link to the thread in his rom description)... so flash each one.. if you use odin make sure you are able to access recovery / download mode via the hardware buttons... (read the vibrant bible.. all the info you could want / need on customizing ur vibrant)

If you go with Team whiskey's Onyx it already has TW removed and LP installed since no TW also cuts down more on lag since TW never has to load
check it out here

I love Macnut R10 and AOSPish. Both are clean, fast, and mostly bug free.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but my phone was running clockwork mod 5.0.2.0. However now looking at the dev forum a lot of Roms now need 4ext recovery. I'm a little confused as to what this is so would like it if someone could shed some light on the subject. Thanks
It gives you more features than CWM and I you can see/change the extentions. I believes our phones are 3 and 4 and some new roms only work on a certain ext hence why certain ppl have had issues (or so I've read in threads)
You can flash multiple zips and check md5 sums etc. The features are on here;
http://slideme.org/application/4ext-recovery-control
Or go to 4ext.net
One of the versions is also touch so your volume keys don't continue to get a battering. Tbh I've stayed with CWM as its going to be updated to touch sensitive and other features as well.

Does clockwork mod support 4ext?
I don't think so. I assume that's why you need to download 4ext recovery, otherwise surely its pointless the dev even making it if it offers no extra functionality?

Can you flash android revolution hd with clockwork mod 5.0.2.0? I haven't had my phone as it was being repaired and have I missed something as all the Roms now say you need ext4

ARHD has always required 4EXT recovery. If the ROM's dev spells it out in his post, then you'd better follow his recommendation.
Thanks guys I will flash 4ext
Hello guys. I'm gonna to buy this phone in 3 days. I have Xperia™ X8 with 2.3.7 and nAa Kernel now so I am not newbie in Custom ROM's and Kernels. I know all what i need about ICS on my current device because in forum is a lot of tutorials..But I didn't find this on Captivate forum so my question is can someone say me the following things?
I want ICS ROM:
I know that I need root my phone sure.
1. Recovery install process is this?? -- Root my phone. Using "Root Explorer" put some files to system and reboot. (This process is from my X8)
2. Which ICS ROM is best?
3. I think that I need new kernel right? If yes which one is best for ICS? (On X8 Custom Kernel has Built-in recovery is it same on Captivate?)
4. Do I need Unlock Bootloader or do something like this??
If someone can put links for ROM, Kernel (If needed), Recovery and guide me how to change my Kernel and Flash ROM?
Please I really don't want to see some answers as "Keep 2.2 if you don't know how to do it"...I really want HELP. I believe that there is someone who can help me.
Thanks.
Sorry for my bad English.
Actually, not quite. I have this little guide that explains it. I hope it helps!
For a couple of your other questions:
-There is no "Best" ROM. The best ROM is the ROM that works best for you. The only way to find that out is to keep trying them out until one of them stands out. Personally, I like CM9 because of the features. But that's just me.
-Once you're on ICS, you don't need to change the kernel. You can, if you'd like. All custom ROMs and kernels come with ClockworkMod recovery
-Galaxy S phones don't have locked bootloaders or fastboot or anything of that nature.
THANK YOU !!! It's really nice guide...but you said that i don't need change my kernel but how can i flash rom from stock 2.2 and stock kernel ?? You said that roms and kernels come with CWM Recovery but on stock kernel i need to install recovery first right? Can i use Rom Manager to install recovery on stock kernel ???

that kernel only exists on your phone as quickly as you can boot into CWM and flash your rom of choice. so answering the first part of your question doesnt matter. it has cwm.
ALL captivate roms come with a kernel. every time you flash a rom it replaces the previous kernel.
Flashing bootloaders is the ONLY way to brick a captivate. Only do it once. Dont unplug your phone durring the 10 second flash. NEVER EVER EVER EVER FLASH "3 button fix" after flashing gingerbread bootloaders. #1 it is NOT needed and #2 it WILL brick your phone. only flashes half the bootloader.
Okey guys, thank you for answers I'm gonna try it on monday when I buy this phone.... Is camera fully working on AOKP Milestone 4 ROM or better is to install Build 31 ??
I want ICS with all working features is there one which has all features working ? If no is Build 31 by Kang good choice for me or you recommend some other ICS ROM?
Yeah I know guys a lot of questions but don't worry this is my last question
oh you dont even have the phone yet?? that explains some of the questions...

It's not hard, just read the tutorials posted here, and you wont have a problem. When I first bought my Captivate, the first day I got it from at&t, I flashed CWM and flashed a custom ROM without any trouble. The first ROM I flashed was Serendipity 6.4, and the dev's made it so easy, they explain everything from start to finish.
But, I highly recommend you buy a Jig before you go and flash anything. search on ebay or mobiletechvideos for a JIG. You can recover your phone from any Soft Brick state that can occur, with a Jig. Just don't go and mess around with bootloaders, if you do something wrong flashing a bootloader, then it might just Hard Brick your phone. If you do need to flash a bootloader, make sure you read everything that the dev posted about installing, then try to do it yourself.
Please, anyone correct me if I am wrong.
Hello Forum,
I am very new to rooting devices and installing custom ROMs.
I have a few questions I would like to ask, I searched the forum and couldn't find appropriate answers.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 (This being one of the threads)
I was going through the sticky thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789397
Which says, "WARNING: Do NOT use CM9, Asylum CM9 or AniDroid kernels as drivers on ANY CM10 based Rom - and vice-versa!"
I had recently flashed CM9.1 on my galaxy note GT-N7000, by following the instructions mentioned on their wiki page.
Just installed clock work recovery, entered the recovery mode, did a WIPE & installed CM9.1 & google apps.
After a few days I followed the same procedure and flashed CM10's latest preview. It went well and everything seems to be working, except that
the phone is a tad bit laggy and doesn't really deliver what JB is supposed to deliver. Sometime the power button won't wake the screen up.
This can be because CM10 is still in preview stage and the stable release is not out. But now that thread I mentioned before kind of bothers me.
Do I need to update the kernel while switching from CM9 to CM10? Downloads are available in the same thread. Or does the kernel update on its own while flashing CM10? And if I have to update the kernel do I need to have CF-Root? Does the fact that I have clock work recovery on my device mean that I have CF-Root?
Sorry if my question is too noob-ish, I just wan't to know a little theory behind what I'm doing so I don't screw my device. None of the threads that I found in the search explain things simply. I would be really glad if anyone of you could help me just understand things. I really appreciate this community for having put up so much information, thanks in advance!
I used this method:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/an...ad-root-unroot-2-3-3-2-3-7-a.html#post2130907
to root my phone.
I've got the SuperSU and RootValidator App, what do I do now?
I thought you could delete your bloatware, but there's not much difference between before and after root, except for those two apps.
I heard there's something called CyanogenMod or something, that lets you flash a custom ROM or something-does this let me upgrade from Gingerbread to Jellybean, and if so, is it purely for aesthetics, or do I get all the features of it as well?(e.g. I can run apps that require ICS/Jellybean)
And of course, there's other stuff I've heard of like overclocking, etc.
Can someone help me out?
Welcome to xda . I will try to help a bit, I had the same question on my mind after rooting. I'm assuming since you are in this forum you have a Galaxy Ace. First thing you will need to know is which version of the Ace you have ( i, t,d etc) as this makes a difference to which roms you can use and which version of CWM ( ClockworkMod ) recovery you can use. Also I should note that you should stay away from an app called Rom Manager, as it will brick your phone making it un-usable.There are many great customised ROMs here and great developers who put alot of hard work and many hours into creating them, so have a look around and see what they offer and see which ones appeal to you, not only in appearance, but in functionality as well. There are several tutorials here that will guide you through many things, including memory tweaks ( my favorite being CronMods int2ext+ ). Again, search will be quite helpful and I can't stress enough to Search before posting a question, chances are your question will have been asked before. Everyone here is quite helpful and I have foud the xda forums to be the best. So look around, read, don't be afraid to ask questions if you can't find the answers already posted. It's addicting lol.
Please note, I am assuming that you have the S5830 and not the S5830i. I take no responsibility for any damage done to your device.
Welcome to XDA! First off to explain some things, being that you are new to the forums, please use the search function before you post a question, topic or forum post. If the information is already in the forum, be prepared for a hate-storm
IMPORTANT: ROM Manager, an application on the Play Store will hard-brick your Ace. The use of ROM Manager is the number one cause of Ace deaths. Avoid it at all costs.
Rooting, essentially is like gaining admin access on your android device. With root you can do things that Google and Samsung never wanted you to do. This includes removing bloat ware, using performance scripts, replacing your system recovery image (more on that in a bit), changing your ROM and a whole truckload of other awesome stuff. Browse the forums, read stuff, ask questions, and most importantly follow directions.
And yeah, as hooked_on_droid put it, it is addictive.

About ROMs, updating your OS and custom recovery images:
CM or Cyanogen mod is an aftermarket custom firmware that brings different custom versions of Android to our Aces. Cyanogen mod for the Ace supports Gingerbread (2.3.x), Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.x) and Jellybean (4.1.x/4.2.x).
There are plenty of different ROMs out there, there's CM of course, AOKP (a super customisable ROM based on CM), there's MIUI, stock based ROMs, AOSP (Android open source project, the way Google meant for your device to be) and even ROMs that emulate other systems like Windows Phone or iOS. These can generally be flashed through a custom recovery image.
Custom Recovery Images: these are used to replace the stock recovery and can be booted up in the same fashion from a powered off state (pressing home+power). CWM or clockworkmod is very popular as is TWRP. From these recovery images, you can flash pretty much whatever the hell you want. ROMs, mods, scripts, app packages, whatever.
For a full guide on how to install CWM and flash custom ROMs go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034145
Don't worry if your root method is different than the one in the tutorial as you have already rooted. The end result is the same.
After installing a custom recovery such as CWM you can make your Android look, feel and act how ever you want; you can install whatever ROM suits YOUR needs and flash scripts that make usage better for YOU. There is no BEST ROM or BEST SCRIPT.
You showed interest in upgrading to Jellybean. Note that CM10 and CM10.1 refer to Jellybean 4.1.x and 4.2.x respectively. CM9 refers to Ice Cream Sandwich and CM7 refers to Gingerbread. There are a number of ROMs out there and I encourage you to explore the forums.
Again welcome to the forums and don't forget to use Thanks
