Update 02/11/2013
I will be in contact with Dan to find out who is keeping to their word on paying for the root of this device.
I will be updating the thread to cross out those who have paid and those who havent.
For those of you that may skip out on this payment consider this.
The device we have now was locked down pretty hard. Enough so that we couldnt get any Dev besides Dan to root the device. I believe, of my own accord, that we will most likely see Dans hand at some point in the future. Are we really going to be the community that bites the hand that fed us? Dont be a blemish on our community and pay for this.
I will be keeping tabs.
Update 02/11/2013
Dan Rosenberg has started to guide people through the process of Rooting our devices. Please go to his thread and pay up as well as emailing and thanking Dan.
Update 02/10/2013
Dan Rosenberg has decided to root our device. All pledges must be prepared to pay up on your portion of the total bounty.
Thank Dan for his work because he did not have to do anything. Check our Atrix HD forums regularly for the root files. Please do not message Dan asking when he will be done. Thank you all for contributing to our cause. Thanks to you all we will soon be able to root even a newly purchased Atrix HD without problems.
Make a pledge for the bounty for jelly bean Root of the Atrix HD.
As best as I can I will update and maintain the thread to reflect current with new posts. I understand developers can't just do these things for free.
Please help our community out and those who donate along with myself will do our best to repay the favour. If jelly bean can be rooted then development might take off.
When root is obtained I will update the thread to reflect said progress. The payment service will be dependent upon the Dev that obtains root.

Yes, i agree donate 20$ for rooting 4.1.1!
Awesome, someone made this thread for 4.1.1 also! I'll pledge $20 for this great and noble cause.
People ought to stop wasting time making threads about root if they aren't willing to pay someone with the knowledge to get it done. Thank you for pledging for our cause!

I think we must show this thread to devs (because in atrix hd thread not so many devs), but how we can do this?
most good devs will search the forums for these, but I guess we can make announcements in the proper Razor Forums.
Please spread the thread. Let as many Devs know as possible.
Did this ever work, DEVs come after the money?

I'm down for at least $50.
I don't really think a show of wallets is what is going to gain root for us , but rather a more targeted effort to get devices into the right folks hands is perhaps more likely to succeed IMO.
Maybe, but I rather think even the most gifted developers can't do anything if there is nothing exploitable. Motorola and Google appearently did do a quite good job. My main hope now is an update or a SBF, which could lead to new ideas ...

I agree. Unless I misunderstood, this is basically a theoretical root 'purse' to whoever roots? This may increase some devs interest in putting their time into it, but IMO moeny is better spent helping the right people get the right tools.
I just have a problem giving someone a device who already has one to work with....when there are developers who don't have a D3 at all.
Personally if I had the knowledge to root a device I would just charge $20 each for the root app/program/directions and then truly get paid for my work. 50 root purchases could make a quick $1000 and assuming this device sells anything like the DX then 800+ could bring in a cool $16,000(there are at least 800 DX's currently using CM7 nightlies).
so give the device to someone who DOESN'T have it?!
I say give it to krazy. He obviously has the will and knowledge.

My intent was not to have myself promoted. I am simply saying how money would be put to a better use.
I have been working with several others, and all of our skills lie in different places, but they all are important. I do currently have a phone, and am not desperately in need of another. It woudl be nice to get a device in the hands of some of the others I have been working with- for example.

A developer working on his own phone isn't going to take any "major" chances since they have to use it as their......well....phone. There is no .sbf file to recover it if bricked, so it's either buying a new one at full retail or seeing if a warranty replacement is possible (though technically it shouldn't be since the user broke the device).
I'd feel more comfortable giving a developer who already has a Droid 3 one to "dev" on, as they are more interested in obtaining root for the device themselves since they want root on their own device (the one they use for calls, txts, etc..).
I have to agree here, the prospect of some cash for doing it is always nice, but we could in theory get it faster if the right people could have the device, but it is all a lot easier said then done..

Hi all,
I've received a large number of requests from people looking to donate money to me in thanks for rooting the Droid 3. I appreciate this community's eagerness to reward the effort I put into this research, but I've already gotten the phone I asked for and I think there are better uses for your money besides throwing cash at me.
I encourage everyone who wishes to donate to me to instead give your money to a reputable charity organization. Those with U.S. credit cards can donate online to the American Red Cross, which performs charity work across the world and allows you to specify what you'd like your contribution to go towards:

I'm greatly missing my favorite kernel developer on the Nexus 7.
I recently got the go-ahead to make a thread for this purpose:
Twitter Link
Donations should be sent to this Paypal account rather than Imoseyon's default account:
Link Removed. Goal reached!
Reasoning for a separate account:
I will be managing this account until the goal ($200/250 depending upon speed of arrival) is met; where it will then be forwarded directly to Imoseyon himself with the explicit intent of his purchasing a Nexus 7. Any other donations would be considered for his current or previous work which should be used however he pleases.
Please list your donor ID in this thread or leave a note in the "Special Instructions" box so I can add you to the list of Donors below.
New Stipulation: I'll match the highest donor up to $50.

Imoseyon is a huge name in the Kernel business.
I provided a link to (essentially) his twitter account.
I figure that (for now) my recognized contributor tag would suffice...
Or that by browsing my guides/posts that I am trusted here.
And I don't necessarily want XDA users money. I just find it funny that a few weeks back I had a huge falling out on Rootz...fight with two admins...and lost a lot of respect for the community.
XDA has always been the more pleasant home.
When the goal is reached I plan on filming my laptop screen via On Screen Recording and via my phone (seems, in my mind, harder to manipulate) of the Accounts screen on the Paypall account so that it's well-known that no funny business is going on on my end.
Every penny will be sent directly to Imoseyon.
I actually opened a new Paypal for this reason and am not using the one linked to my bank...it's linked to a bank account that I haven't touched in years. I don't even have a card to do so if I wanted to.
I understand the concerns.
Trust me, I do.
But I can assure you they'll be alleviated.
Imoseyon only has threads and notoriety on rootzwiki... and you're surprised that donations only came from rootzwiki?
Also I believe this is very much against XDA rules. I believe on XDA donations can only be requested AFTER the fact.

Sending to imoseyon as we speak.
I already sent my personal $50 (which is more than I can afford...but hey...I'm no thief!)
Nice job he is a great dev and will provide a great kernel. His lean kernels runs great on my gnex.
No funny business:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DbP6-7x5zE
I wish we could see 007 kernel on the N7.
Maybe ask the developer if you could create a thread...
You never know.
All this time; I had no idea Imoseyon had told someone "if I had the device I would develop leankernel for it" (paraphrasing).
When someone repeated this information to me...
We got him a Nexus 7 in 60 hours.
As you can see from this post Obsidian... said he will talk to hash about accepting a S4 Active to get his safe strap working. This will allow us to flash roms and multiboot different roms from our active(for more information on how this will work please go to this forum). He is currently working for this for the VZ S4 and seems to be making progress. If he is successful he will consider accepting an active to do the same. It would be cool to get him a Active so he can bug test and help us out. This will really boost the development for our device.... I write this to ask if you guys are willing to join with the community to raise money for his Active. We already have $675 towards a unlocked bootloader, this will give us most if not all the same features and will probably only cost us $400-$500. I hate to do this but below I will @ all the pledge members for the bootloader because some of them said they don't normally check the forums:
Pledges:
texassax $10
JEZZEJAMEZ $20
my-blue-snog-box $10
paleh0rse $10
skeppley $20
daugh016 $10
mnasledov $80
huggstown $100
Total = $260
Goal = $530
(this goal is based off of resent eBay auctions, if the phone costs less than the amount raised then the highest pledge amount will be reduced. Example if the highest pledge is $100 USD and we were $20 over... we would only ask for $80)
If someone wants to donate his phone to hash we can give you the pledge if needed
I'm tight on money myself, but count me in for $10 anyway.
@joshuadjohnson22, are you asking for a consensus as to whether people are willing to say "yeah, this fulfills the terms better than anything else we have come across; let's use the money we pledged for this"? Or are you starting another bounty independent of the bootloader?

This is separate and will probably be the best we will ever get. The bootloader may never be unlocked, this will be a pre-release here's a device now work your magic type of commitment. The bootloader unlock will be nice but with this it will probably not be needed. If you want to remove one pledge for the other I understand fully.
Keep in mind he has not agreed to anything yet. We could get all the money together and he says no or just requests one of us to send him our device... or work with one of our users (the devices should be that different...), this is just to see if we have the money pledge to get him the active if he agrees

I think you're looking into this a little too early..
He was saying something about breaking into the device by using some of the scripts that are needed to be run for the qualcomm chipset to work early in the boot sequence. We have essentially the same ones as the S4. The only thing that would most likely need to be changed is the actual recovery that is booted because we have different LCD drivers.
If you want to buy him an Active just as a sort of "thanks" then by all means go for it but I don't think he will need one in order to complete the mod.. It may well be up to his goodwill to compile us a working version for our device if he doesn't open-source the project which is kind of doubtful here at XDA.
Once again though, I'm not a developer and just another resident idiot so take everything I say with a grain of salt.
Edit: the "resident idiot" thing isn't directed at anybody or meant to be offensive just a little joke

Good point. It appears his team made some base roms for users that work well with the mod, it would be cool if he had some active specific support for us. Either way he may figure out that he could make a simple port for us but it would still be nice to know we have the support to provide a device if it is needed. So if it comes to that we can ship it out right away... but he is smart enough to decide if that will be needed. Either way this is exciting and I hope it works out

Just keep me posted, my donation is good for either solution... or both (I'll pay twice if someone goes on to unlock the actual bootloader, as well).
I've got no real intention of buying an Active at this point - I'm considering a GE S4 with an Obex, but a new phone has been moved to the back burner for now: the possibility of buying a house is priority no. 1 at the moment. I'm leaving my pledge for the bootloader, because I believe in the concept - unlocked bootloaders help us all by driving the dev community - but a workaround really isn't the same to me.
I hope that doesn't come off as sophistry, but either way, I'm not in for this one.

Well a few things with this comment:
1. If the Nexus 5 has US LTE and keeps the same price point but starts with 16 GB I'm sure it will temp many of us...
2. I am sure we will have something by the end of the year/beginning of next year (that is when the Nexus 5 is projected to be released)
3. thanks for your pledge, it has been updated
Money's getting tight here too but I'll throw down $40. It's totally worth being able to run alternate ROMs on this thing. It's too bad ATT did something exclusive with Samsung for this phone because it's really great.

@thatbigmoose have you tried the proof of concept for our phone yet? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45310586&postcount=217 I figure you will be the best one out of us to mess with it...
I just tried it. Can confirm that I was able to load the SS recovery, but didn't try anything else.

Hi, I'm new to the forum here I've browsed through this website in the past but only recently signed up.
I was wondering if anyone here is working on rooting the S5 for AT&T and if so who?
I don't know if anyone here has proposed or has done bounties in the form of Bitcoin before. Bitcoin is
easier to donate that paypal and everyone can see how much money the bounty has gathered due to its public ledger.
Also, I thought that instead of proposing to donate money to people that develop root for our devices it may be best
if we actually do it instead of simply proposing and then perhaps not following through?
Your thoughts?

there are several posts throughout the forms about root and bounties etc etc, we have a pretty good search tool.
as far as bitcoin i dont believe anyone here uses it, paypal is the preffered method
It depends, because the only person to REALLY have a say what form the compensation is in, is the person who finds the root exploit. Most times it's PayPal though.

Not sure how you can say Bitcoin is easier than Paypal...it certainly isn't. The average joe would have no idea what to do with bitcoins. Bitcoins are a waste of time and resources, in my opinion. As for donating instead of pledging/proposing, that wouldn't make any sense either. I don't know about you, but I definitely wouldn't send my money to someone who hasn't proven themselves.
The way it's structured now seems to be the best and easiest way.
Cryptocoins need to go away...
If I were capable of rooting a phone and I did it only for the money, I would prefer a less fraudulent form of currency.
