8GB last batch? - Nexus 7 General

Long sorry short, I wanted to buy just when it out, but waited to buy from local shop in Israel, as the price difference was small, anyway, I waited, and then 16GB officially started to sold here, then 32GB, in the same price as 16GB LOL, then reed about all the problems about QA, the screen lift and other stuff, just like my GNEX..that I postponed to buy it, because of software problems, and screen QA ..and so on, eventually the software problems fixed, and I said to my self, just **** it, how much can I wait? if it will be crap, I will sell it on eBay, just like other stuff I bought from the last years. Some time a go my sis' got some cheap 7" AKAI tablet..yea some 800 X 600 run ICS..yep crap, but the thing is, it's a portable device, it just don't need all that storage, and after I used it ..I thought again..do I want to pay more for 32GB+3G? that here cost like 1.5 new device..
so I remembered there was a price drop for 8GB, and eventually it stop selling, when 32GB introduced, so I now in search for the 8GB, now I 100% sure 8GB is enought for all my need, mostly will be used in home, when out, I will load what I need, and use it offline, like movies, music, and the main reason I want a 7" tablet, is for PS1 emu, and reed japanese manga..so..because of all that manufacture problems, I want to know what was the latest batch? like c90 and so? thank you for help.

Odp: 8GB last batch?
Short story long.

Sorry for that , I think I will pass, and just buy the 3G when I'll have money..8GB is not enough, even if I will learn how to manage the space, nobody have time for than, and it just annoying, who know if I will need 3G or 32GB if I never had one?

3G would be pointless for me, or anyone else who has a half decent phone they can tether to. I pay for unlimited 3G for my phone, so having a 3G n7 would actually cost me more money.

8gb = thumbs up = pro choice. 3g = waste of money. It does suck that my itsy bitsy phone has more memory then my tab. But what u gonna do, moe memory moe problems.

I also have an s3 and tethering isn't all that great when the phone starts to heat up. I'm not saying the 3g model is the best, I'm just saying it's nice to have such an option, especially if you are in a country where wifi isn't really accessible.

The 16gb and 32gb models have faster storage than the 8gb. Keep that in mind.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium

I can't recommend the 8gb model. 16 would be fine if you only play casual games but I was running low on space. These HD games are several gigs in size these days.
In this day and age, the base package should be 32gb+

I honestly don't see the point of owning and android phone AND an android pad... same with having an iphone and ipad
if I had an iphone, I'd look at android pads
I was looking at the new ipad too... but I can't see myself using it for anything more than I use my phone or laptop for so I don't see the point
I was thinking about the newer ipad too, but I ended up buying a $1000 laptop instead. Lol

It makes a lot of since to have have both apple or both android. You can use your purchased apps on both devices from the same company. But you can't use your ios apps on your android and your android apps on ios. You would have to buy them all over again.
That display is really something to behold. Never seen anything like it before. Would I buy one? Nope. Would I buy an Android tablet? Nope. I have 0 use for both of them at this point.

Have fun with the rest of the sheep.
And why is that high of screen resolution needed on a 10" screen?
Just like the rest of the iDrones, ooh look it is shiny, look at the pretty colors and lights, and I only have to sign my bank account, soul, and first born child over to crapple? Sign me up! Morons!
Give crapple 500+ dollars,
Get higher screen res than is actually needed,
Tablet overheats and shuts down,
Firmware fix will just slow down CPU reducing performance,
Pay crapple hundreds more dollars for apps that aren't actually worth it,
PRICELESS!

Their thinking is you can use your Galaxy Nexus or pretty much any decent android mobile and the great functionality that is Wifi tethering.
I'd have liked 3G version as well since I want to use it out and about. Lucky as long as you have an android device, you can easily create a WiFi hotspot.

Well.. I was expecting somebody to offer tethering. It will work. But most of us have big screen devices like GNex etc. So if I will take my GNex from the pocket.. I will use it rather than will turn on the Tethering.
Hot spots are OK. But... well... It is not as available as GSM (and in some cases costs more than GSM; at least in Lithuania).
I have iPad with 3G. Maybe that's the reason I can't imagine tablet without GSM anymore

Yea, definitely specially when you look at the break down of the device and what they are really making from it, close to nothing.
So long as you have a data plan on your phone, and this also includes tethering, then you could just tether it to your phone for access to the internet on the go. But, frankly, a tablet in my opinion is designed to be a home device that only leaves home when on extremely long trips. On a day to day basis, smart phones suffice.
We are getting a few trolling topics whose only intent seems to be to discourage people from buying what appears to be an excellent tablet.
It is easy to spot them by the titles. "Anyone else disappointed" is a good candidate.
It would be nice to give them their own forum, maybe titled "You gotta be kidding".
It's not rocket science, don't like it - don't buy it.

Look at MOST POPULAR 7" tablets: Kindle Fire, Galaxy Tab, etc. None have GSM chip and yet they are selling like hot cakes...
I have Clear 4G with unlimited Internet for $25 / month. Backup is my Note via tethering.
Doesn't bother me, I would choose the wifi over 3g anyway. Whats the point in paying for a second data plan when I can tether.
I imagine 3g/4g versions will be available later if there is enough interest from mobile networks wanting to offer it.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 2
Doesnt bother me from purchasing it. The only thing that I am upset about is not having USB OTG and MHL connecting out of the box. But that is something I can live with.
But with a 200 dollar tablet you really cant complain about a lot of things.
3/4G Model Not That Necessary These Days
Even if Google had offered a 3/4G model, I still would have bought the wifi version.
Why would I want to pay an additional $10 a month to add a tablet to my plan when I get free tethering / wifi hotspot?
I always carry my phone, whether I'm carrying the tablet or not. If I absolutely have to have a data connection on the tablet, no problem.
I've been practicing Bluetooth tethering with my galaxy tab 7 and my galaxy s showcase, in anticipation of my nexus, it will be little more inconvenient, but i don't think I'll miss 3g at all

How is there always someone who just has to complain about something. Im guessing you do not have the device seeing as how not having cell coveragei is such a big deal and so important to you. I said in a different thread and I swill say it here as well; I do have the Nexus 7 and it has taken all of my expectations and blownb them out the windows. This thing is as solid feeling as an IPAD but ten times more awesome, runs smooth as butter 24/7, and plays Tegra 3 games better and more clear than any other device I have seen, Hands down. FOR $200 bucks..?? I use my Galaxy Nexus as a hotspot and keep it on all day. When im in the car im charging the Galaxy onlky cause the nexus 7 has awesome battery. This topic is almost as bad as the one a few lines up that says "Disappointed in CPU perfomance" or something to that nature.. That's a ridiculous untruth or a faulty device.,

Get the Nexus 7, or wait for the Nexus 10?

I've been really wanting to purchase this tablet for awhile now, up until I read a few articles about a rumored 10 inch version of the tablet. I would really enjoy the larger screen, but again this is just a rumor. Should I go ahead and purchase the Nexus 7 or wait to see if there will be a Nexus 10? Thanks for anyone's input!
Btw, these are the articles I read:

I think I would prefer a 10" tablet myself, but I may end up loving the 7" form factor. I was debating just like you, but when I found out that IF they release a nexus 10, that it wouldn't be until late this year, I went ahead and ordered the 7 and will sell/trade it for the 10 when and if released.

I had a nookColor tablet last year - I loved reading on it, it was easy to hold, etc. I wanted a Galaxy Tab 10.1 so badly though, and after playing with one at Best Buy I decided to sell my nook and buy the Tab. It was cool - definitely better for watching movies - but I found myself not using it as much as I had used the nook. I hardly read and the 10 inch form factor was difficult to hold comfortably. Sold the Tab and got the N7 and couldn't be happier! In the tablet world, bigger is not always better... Personal opinion: Get the N7.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I think I'm going to get the N7, unless I hear any more talk about the N10 in the next few days. Although, I've been seeing all these threads about people's N7's being defective, so I'm going to wait a bit to place my order anyway.

Hey guys, I'm in the same situation of the op, only difference is that Nexus 7 isn't still purchasable in my country (it will be in august/september).
However, I think that I will use this tablet (if I will buy it) for reading book and comic/manga, you think that it is good for that, or is better if I take my attention to a 10" tablet?

I read it's been backordered for a few weeks, so you might have more time for talk to come out anyway.
Edit: the 16GB version anyway. The 8GB version seems available.
I have a 10" galaxy tab, plus the nexus 7. The nexus 7 really surprised me, that small screen may actually be big enough. I am still undecided whether or not I will need another 10" tablet, or the 7" is enough. But at the moment there its a high likelihood that the 10" will never leave my house again, and I will travel with the 7" only. I think for most people, the 7" form factor may be better. The only thing that makes me hesitate is the need to read full page adobe files. So far, what I tested are all readable on the 7" device, but that is so unexpected that I need to test more before I decide to retire the 10" tablet.
I prefer the 7" form factor.
10" is simply too large when you are viewing it by holding it with your hand.
You have to move your eyes around to look from top to bottom.
I too was a little worried about something that isn't a whole lot bigger than our phones now...but I actually love it. It is easier to handle and to type on. I like reading from it as well. As far as waiting...I wouldn't be surprised if Google had a bigger tablet around the holidays. But I wouldn't wait around for it.

If you don't plan to transfer content to that card with a usb-3 connection and a reader connected directly to the computer, it doesn't have sense to buy it.
The note it is limited to about 15mb transfer rate, so you will be throwing money out of the window.

Do you have a reference for that info? I plan to pickup a note 2 upon US release and was debating on waiting for the new Samsung high speed micro sd cards or going with Sandisk Ultra.
Daniel
You really won't see much of a difference between the Gold and Ultra cards. The important aspect of those cards are the read speeds and it's absolutely overboard for a phone. Save yourself some money and just get the Ultra w/30mb read and you'll be set. No need for anything faster.

Yeah, just spend that money on the 64GB version of the Note II. I bet the flash chips they use in the note are just as fast, without the bottleneck of MicroSD connections.

agreed. The Ultra card (30mb/sec) is the absolute fastest card you will need for a phone. You won't even take full advantage of its speed but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than the Gold.
The only thing that will take advantage of write speeds when using the phone is how fast you take pictures and transfer files to the card from a computer. THAT'S IT. And technically even with that you will be limited to around the same speeds as the average USB 2.0 speed which is normally between 10mb-25mb/sec.
Don't waste your money.
The problem is many people just see whats stated on the package, and don't realize that to obtain the stated speed, you need the unit to support UHS I, and at present no phones support it, so the max speed for the card is read 25mb/s and write 24mb/s, which is the standard for micro sdhc and micro sdxc noted as the class 2, 4, 6 and 10.
Got the 64gb uhs I class 10 works fine write 11MB read 38MB second.

Was hoping someone knew a good way to format it ahead of time in preparation of installing into the phone. Like a third party pc tool for example maybe?

Your problem is the custom rom. Same thing happened to me. I wasn't able to format it until I went stock. To avoid having to go to stock, format it with a PC.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/andyfei/mini-microsd-reader-for-android-smartphones-and-ta
An external card reader that enables you to use MicroSD card on your Nexus/Android tablets and Android smartphones.
It works with the following devices:
Samsung Galaxy S2, S3, Note, Note 2; Class 1 support.
Motorola RAZR M, RAZR HD, RAZR MAXX HD; Class 1 support.
HTC One X+, Evo 4G LTE (Sprint), DROID DNA; Class 1 support.
Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Google Nexus 7 & Nexus 10; Class 2 support.
Nook Color, Kindle Fire; Class 3 support.
Tablets using RockChip & AllWinner chips; Sonicview N710; Class 1 support.
Class 1: it is supported by the phone/tablet out of box, no rooting or other privileged software needed. Class 2: supported using 3rd party software such Media Importer from Play Store, with some limitations; root device and install 3rd party software such as StickMount to remove such limitations. Class 3: a custom ROM such as CyanogenMod is needed.
It should work with most other devices that support USB host or USB-OTG (On-The-Go) as long as the device maker doesn't intentionally disable such functionality. For the technically inclined, it has been tested and verified on all four major mobile SoCs(system-on-a-chip): Qualcomm Snapdragon, Samsung Exynos 3, 4 & 5, Nvidia Tegra 2 & 3, TI OMAP; as well as on RockChip and AllWinner chips.

I've been looking for one of these for like 3 years, insta buy. It's really too bad that it won't work with our Nexus 4 brethren.
Finally! I am honestly really surprised that Chinese web sites aren't flooded with such thingies already, there is every single possible connector for microUSB, except a tiny card reader!
Well, I guess being an early adopter has its costs, 12$ it is
(beware next year dealextreme is going to have them for a dollar )
Thanks for sharing the link!

This already exists and is shipping from China as we speak. I've already got one.
I can attest that this works on my N7 running CM10.1. Of course, it's sold out now ...

Another option is to pair the following two together. I've also got these and will vouch that they work on my N7

Finally, I can't vouch for this one, but I'd be tempted to get one if I wasn't building something similar myself

Any old USB SD card reader will work if you have an OTG to female USB cable. You might need StickMount, depending on your kernel, to mount it. But that is a free app from the Play Store.
The only advantage I see to this device is that it is a neat fit. No cables dangling. But it would still have to sell pretty cheap for this to make a difference. And, personally, if I had a special need to use an SD card, I would be reluctant to wait around for some future delivery.
