Tweak to speed up data speeds on T-mobile network - Nexus 4 General

I just tried this tweak out and I am getting much better speeds overall. If someone else could confirm, that would be great. The tweak is simple.
When editing the APN, it should be epc.tmobile.com. Under APN type it should say "default, supl, mms" add hipri to the end so that it reads "default, supl, mms, hipri" and that is it.
Give it a shot and let me know if your speeds are any faster. The biggest improvements I've seen are in upload speeds and latency. My latency is down to about 35ms down from about 57ms and my upload speeds are up to 3.8mbps, up from about 2mbps. Download speeds are about the same.
UPDATE: I was only able to get those speeds when I changed my DNS to google's servers and adding hipri

Gonna see if it works and how do you change your Dns?

I use setdns from the play store

Weird, i get significant delay and network error when using speedtest.net app with setdns - google dns.

Can anyone else confirm this?

My stock N4 doesn't really show any speed improvement with only hipri added. Can't tweak the DNS since I'm not rooted.
btw, do you keep IPv4 or you're adding v6 as well?

I just use IPv4. I wonder if my speed improvements are a result of being in a refarmed area. The hipri tweak is usually for at&t phones and i believe stands for high priority. Anyone else try it out?

Refarmed market here, no benefit for me.

It slowed down my dl speed and increased my up speed. Thanks anyways

I performed the tweak but I haven't seen any major changes.
One thing to keep in mind is the way Android devices after JellyBean handles the network. I've noticed that "at rest" the network stays at HSPA:10. When the network is "active" it switches to HSPA+:15. I think this happens in an effort to conserve battery when not in use. Because of this, the first SpeedTest performed will have a higher latency than ones performed immediately after.
Just some thoughts.

Holy crap I got some nice results with this tweak! Here are some before and after pics of the results.

This makes much, much more sense than using an AT&T APN tweak on T-Mobile's network. Anyone who is claiming to see an improvement can congratulate themselves on experiencing the placebo effect firsthand.

I don't understand why the download speed jumps from being slow (for this test just now, it started at around 11, slowly creeping up to 40ish), then jump to incredible speed (jumped to ~400-500), and speedtest.net just randomly decides a number for the download result...
The number is an average, lol. Might be the way that fiber optics work. And I am super mad at Verizon for not offering FIOS in my area yet. I'm stuck with TWC @ 10 down and .5 up.

With close servers, yes. Servers very far, nope; it's just slow.
Other speed tests, like SpeakEasy and DSLReports, do do that also. DSLReports Java tests, however, are more stable (doesn't go up to the said 500ish, but only upto around 100 when it jumps).

What speed are you subscribed to. I don't know much about fios except we don't have it here. If its anything like charter and Comcast do though its probably a speed boost at the beginning of your download. It it is then a speed test that runs past the boost would show it slow back down some.

40down, 30up. When I'm downloading something big off direct connects, it caps out around 5-6MB/s and stays like that until completed download, which is around 40Mb/s, so I do get the full speed, but for speed tests, it jumps like that...
One possibility is that Verizon temporarily allocates more bandwidth to an individual user when the system is operating well below capacity (perhaps during off-peak hours), kinda like Comcast's Powerboost stuff that's advertised all the time. You could try testing during peak times and see what happens.
/not on verizon, wouldn't know for sure.

Is the LTE chip in this phone faster than TBOLT?

Same generation chip. New LTE chips aren't due until 2012. However, the implementation of the chip itself does depend going from manufacturer to manufacturer, as well as the processor they're working with. I get fine speeds on my Bionic.

Good to know I'm not the only one that has noticed this. I stopped by Verizon earlier to take a look at their demo Bionic. The thing consistently got between 3-5 Mbps down more than the Thunderbolt running the latest leaked Gingerbread radio, and roughly 1 Mbps upload faster. Like I said, this was consistent test after test after test. I must have done 20 tests in the store with my Thunderbolt next to the Bionic, starting the tests at the exact same moment. There is definitely something different in the Bionic's favor.
My money is on the processor making the difference. The dual core is probably a better balance with the 4g.

Not talking about the upload bug necessarily.
The standard deviation between several measurements of two phones tested side by side at the same time and with the same radios make me suspicious of speedtest.com as well.

Q why is radio so much slower than Skyrocket on WIFI?

So i have been running side by side tests against an at&t skyrocket.
On wifi off he same wifi router the skyrocket gets speeds up to 20k where the note gets a little over 5k. I have tried on a number of routers and get the same results.
On non LTE networks the skyrocket gets on average DOUBLE the speed.
Quadrant shows my note at 3900 and the SR at 2600. Which is in line with what I have seen on the web. Unconnected to the above, but I wanted to see if I have a dud note. I don't.
Anyone know why? Does the skyrocket have a newer or different radio chip?
Anyway, I am prepared to bet that the at&t note will be faster than the international one we currently have.

The Note doesn't have LTE (the korean Note has). It has HSDPA (21 Mbps). Why the Wifi is slower than on your Skyrocket is another question. I have no idea.

Your local tower/site might be being upgraded to LTE. If so, you should expect some down time. My site literally went offline for a few days (100% roaming on Verizon) until they finished whatever upgrade they were doing. Got LTE about a week later. But as stated, your mileage may vary.

I'm coming from a Nexus S 4G too and this phone has so much better reception, especially wifi. Don't really get LTE that often though, which is kind of disappointing because I actually had pretty good WiMAX coverage. But I know LTE coverage will only get better with time.
Signal != Data speed. If your signal is good but your data speed is slow, it's most likely that the sector is overloaded or the site is currently backhaul limited. It sounds like the site you connect to hasn't had Network Vision upgrades yet. Go familiarize yourself with Network Vision over at s4gru.com.
Call sprint before you return it. I had the same thing. I had great signal with my HTC Evo 3d and when I switched to the S4, I was dropping calls like crazy and with 1 bar or no signal. Found out that they were updating the towers and I also have 4g in my area now. Woot!

Using the App I've played around with my chromecast location, if I connect it to a 2m HDMI cable and move away I can get the chromecast to 24.83Mbps which is obviously a massive difference, chromecast is always doing HD now instead of flicking between HD and VHS.

Yes. My internet speed is only 5 MB/s-down 0.6 MB/s-up so that doesn't test how my wifi is functioning. Streaming off my local network sometimes requires 30-50 MB/s.

Running an Asus RT-AC56U router with latest Merlin firmware and set Chromecast MAC address to "highest" under QoS under 2.4 GHz wireless. I will run some test moving it around by extending the Chromecast stick in a best position to see if I can improve upon this and report back. ISP is Comcast with typical down/up on a desktop with OOKLA at 60mbps/5mbps.
Based on others experience are these numbers good?
Much thanks for the app!
Great app!! thank you very much dev.
Can someone please explain to me what difference does the HDMI extender make? I see some people say it helps them get faster speeds but how?

By default, chromecast will be pluged to TV at rear, wifi signal may be affected by TV.
HDMI extender could help to put chromecast to a right position.
