battery drain on 3g - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys.
I know there are million of threads very similar about battery drains, but I can't find a definitive answer.
On wifi I think our x8 works with no particular drains. But on 3g is very bad.
Only data, whatsapp and mail (every 3 hours update) on. Well, 1 hours of web browsing has been my maximum(always thalking about 3g). Is this normal, according to you?
I'm now testing Gingerdx x30, but I tried other roms with more or less the same results.
What about you?

3g should drain battery more then wifi. So its normal.

Even if I have 3g on in standby mode , battery drains too much imho.

3g Reduce the battery ..due to receiving large amounts of data transferring great performance, decibel
Hz, everything thin reduce it

Ok, I Understand.
What's your usage with 3g?

The 3G mode power consumption depends on the signal quality and the distance from the connected rx/tx station. With 2G mode too (this is normal), but the 3G range is much smaller than the 2G range (approx. half distance than the 2G). So, the power consumption increasing quickly with the distance. With weak signal the radio device working on max power, and the battery draining due the higher frequency (1800/2100MHz instead of 900MHz of 2G) Example: if my 3G signal is weak, my battery is burn like the hell (in standby too), if I go to the nearest rx/tx station (max. 3G signal), the battery burn faster than 2G, but the difference not significant. You can play with some RIL settings in build.prop, but you can't win extreme battery savings with these settings.

That is normal.
However, if you're a light internet user, I would definitely recommend you switch to 2G only. All the web pages and mails would take a bit longer to load, but you would do a lot to save your battery. You can do it from the settings screen if your ROM supports it, but if it doesn't, the code *#*#4636#*#* can get you there.

Well I'm testing 2x battery

[Q] Wifi v 3g/HSDPA on Battery

I do a lot of browsing on my milestone, i predominately use 3g/HSDPA but wondered if using wifi is better on the battery life? Any views or knowledge on this?
It depends what kind of internate usage. For example browsing or some other active internate usage meant 95% of battery drain will be the screen+CPU, so it doesnt matter what you use.
But if we talk abaut constant internet connection in the backgroud i can tell you 3G/HSDPA uses a A LOT more battery than WIFI or 2G. I went from 2G to WIFI and no real difference. But 3G has some isues with constant connection, i think the reason is, there is no real low power mode for 3G. So either have WIFI, or only turn on 3G when you need and put back 2G, when you dont use your phone.

WiFi on this device is amazing. I use it at home and work and noticed a large boost in battery life, almost doubled my battery life.

yep same here
cheers guys will be testing wifi out over the next week and see if it helps the battery life!
Hmm, I was wondering. What is your battery life on constant 3G (web browsing, google talk etc.) usage and on stand-by mode?
The milestone's wifi is one of the less consuming wifi chip ever seen on a phone.
The 3g, instead is exactly the opposite, specially if you are on fast network (10 or more Mbps), specially if you are using an old FW.
My milestone was lasting in about 6h with the original FW.
With 2.38 it can cover a whole day

3g consuming more power?

Is it normal for 3g to consume more power than wifi?
/ Sent from my GT-I9000 on stock JVK /
yes it will consume more power
Standby or data transfer?
In my experience, they are similar in standby. but I guess it depends on the conditions.
Yes, it is normal. Whether it is on standby or in usage, it's definitely the case for me.
To my experience and observation WiFi consumes less power than while browsing/surfing on 3G.
Sometimes I spend all evening at home on WiFi (which automatically turns odd data connections on 3G/other) with little consumption. A friend of mine observed this too on his Samsung I5800.

Battery status:

Cell standby 50%
Phone idle 42%
Display 5%
Android OS 3%
Android system 2%
Is this normal?

A high cell standby percentage means you are in an area with little signal. If I spend all day playing Skyrim in my basement (like 14 hours) then I also will have an astronomically high percentage of cell standby. Basically, your phone is trying to connect to the network when there is an unreliable signal.
My suggestion: Turn airplane mode on when you plan on not using your phone. If this is while you sleep, you can configure the app Tasker to put your phone in airplane mode and reconnect every hour or so to collect text messages. The guide for this is here.
Word thanks (;

When xt860/xt862 first came out cell standby was at the top of everyones battery usage list. Recent updatez have fixed that but ive noticed some roms still have it as being top of the list, however to me it hasn't seemed to affect my battery life. What phone model/rom are you running

Liberty also has an issue with displaying cell standby usage. I'm running Liberty 2.0, and I constantly get cell standby of 40+ percent, no mattery how much I use or where my phone is. If your battery life is fine, then dont worry about it. My extended battery can last up to 3 days..

I got 40% cell standby today while connected to wifi all day. I wasn't more than 50 feet from router all day and it was still high.
Not sure the signal strength is the sole (or main) factor.
Running liberty 2.0 with the speedy on my d3.

Cell standby is not just for the 3G data connection - it's also for your connection to the voice network, which is not switched off when you are connected to WiFi. So, if you are in an area with a weak signal, unless you go into airplane mode and then turn on WiFi, you could see high cell standby.

Battry Drain when using 3G Data? (CM7)

I love the CM7 build for the milestone, It makes the phone so much better!
but one thing is weird. When I use the 3G DATA (browse sites, watch YouTube)
the battery drains REALLY fast!
For example, today I got into facebook, browsed 4-8 pages, and the Battery
level Decreased by 30%! (FOR A 5 MIN SURFING)
Wifi surfing seems ok.
Is this normal?! anyone else had this problem ???
I have the same problem. using 3G data drains my battery drastically. been using the phone for more than 2yrs now. i wont complain about that. but CM7 is gr8 when it comes to boosting your battery life.
Same thing happens here and i think it's normal. 3G consumes more battery than wifi on every phone i had.
Active 3G consume more battery than Wifi (or 2G) but 30% in 5 minutes is not normal.
You should calibrate your battery with this tutorial : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11803458&postcount=10
Did you calibrate the battery after having flashed CM7?
I'm loosing a lot of batterylife when 3G is activated, too.
battery "drain" is normal on DATA. i had these problem too with my milestone.
wouldnt say its a CM7 problem...
for me it is because of the "2 year old battery" + DATA... those two wont work well

[Q] up to 1% battery drain per minute on cellular data (3G, H and LTE)

Hi folks
Does anybody else also expierience such a huge battery drain on his One? It runs smooth and the battery usage is acceptable, but as soon as i turn on a faster network than 2G and surf on the internet, especially searching for things (loading data), it's using so much battery... I know that the screen is on and the cpu load is also higher while browsing and i was expieriencing this problem on my other htc phones, but it seems like a problem with the modem for me... it gets hot while browsing and is using more battery even when in idle
Is your phone rooted? Have you checked whether some mod or something is doing it? But if you want better battery life with LTE you can always enable fast dormancy if your carrier has that. But also if you have fast dormancy already enabled try to disable it because some carriers do not support fast dormancy. Best way to check, call them up. But over all I'd say that on LTE it should get a good 5-10 min per 1% battery drain. Hope I helped
