[Q] Need safest easiest i897 update and root route - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So yeah, I'm a noob and hate myself and want to get that out of the way. I have an AT&T (but I'm with Consumer Cellular) i897 on 2.2 that I rooted and unlocked over a year ago with super one click and that's the extent of my experience other than an iphone jailbreak. I have searched so many places that I now have a migraine and would like to just get a short easy answer. There are so many different variables for updating and rooting that I can't find an answer to MY specific situation.
I'd like to update to new software but I don't know which version works best with my older captivate and then find the right tool to root. I don't do alot of tweaking, I just like removing all the AT&T bloatware and would like to see some functioning improvement. It tends to freeze on occasion, can lag a bit and not always cooperative.
I may be asking too much but could one of you intelligent developer type guys just tell me what to update, flash, replace, with what and then the tool to root, I would be ever so grateful.
edit: I just realized that I won't need to root again if I'm not doing an officiate update, correct?

Update to Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread here...Stock GB i897ucKK4
Get Root and/or KK4 Corn Kernel that has CWM Recovery included so that u can move on to flashing Dev Roms here...[Utility] KK4 Easy Root.
Read carefully. Read some more. Understand what ur doing and the risks involved. Proceed. Enjoy. Be sure to at least hit the Dev's thanks buttons because they have worked hard and spent a lot of time doing what they do.

So then, do I need to root again with KK4? And what do you mean by move on to flashing Dev Roms? As in a 2 step process for updating to 2.3.5 or that I might want to experiment with more advanced firmware?
Thanks for the help and yes I will certainly read everything over and over until I'm sure I understand it before I proceed. Thanks and donation too.

Android 2.3.5 GB i897ucKK4 is the latest official Stock firmware release for the Captivate. And the last official.
The Utility KK4 Easy Root will get u Root. And if that is where u want to stop, then that is fine. But if u want to go on from there into flashing some Developer's Roms in the Dev forum then u can choose to keep the Corn Kernel, that has CWM Recovery included, and use that to flash a Rom of ur choice.
And thanks for the donation. Appreciate that !!

Just to be sure I understand then, I WILL lose root when I update to 2.3.5 even though it's not an OTA or by going through kies, correct?
I feel as if you understood and addressed my needs perfectly and I really appreciate your help.

Yep. U will loose Root. That Stock install will do a full wipe. So back up ur contacts, apps, messages, etc. whatever u want to save. Then flash the KK4. After that u can use the Utility to get Root.
U could also, if u prefer, install the i897ucKK4 through the Software update in the Settings of the phone. Then after the update, use the Utility.

I actually tried that (and I don't remember the message) but it wouldn't update so I assumed it was because I'm either not with AT&T or it was rooted. I will do it your way after I read through all the instructions. I have Titanium Backup so I'm good. Thanks again!

Gotcha.
And if u have any pc connection issues, download mode issues, etc. see this thread... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33227541&postcount=1

Perfect. And you're welcome. Sometimes us newbies are presented with so many overwhelming options it's almost impossible to make an informed decision. Removing the frustration was worth it. Wish I could have given more.

Glad to help. And glad u got it going!

I can get to the KK4 Easy Root page and even access the screenshots but the link below takes me to an empty dropbox page. Do you have an alternate?

That worked great, thanks. Also, Norton says the KK4 update was a possible malware/phishing file. A false positive I presume? Just want to make sure it wasn't from an older site that hadn't been looked at in awhile especially since I procrastinated so long updating my Captivate.

Yes, false alarm for kk4. It will update your bootloaders to Gingerbread.
I recommend that you silence, uninstall or disable any AV while flashing, especially when flashing bootloaders, cause you really, really don't want anything interfering with a successful, complete bootloader flash. If you have bad bootloaders, you are bricked.

Don't worry about that, the phone won't ring while in download mode
Just make sure nothing interrupts the flash (unplugged cable, program closes, drop phone.. etc) as it will most likely brick it.

I guess it shows how long it's been since I've done this. So many things have changed since then, as has my aging memory.
I will make sure everything is safe and secure begin I start. Thanks again for all your help. If I had known how friendly and responsive this forum was, I would have asked for help a long time ago.

I was getting ready to update/root today and I'm not sure what to use for download mode. I have superoneclick with ADB from back in 2011 installed when I first rooted along with kies and all the drivers and I don't know whether to use it or start over or even wipe some it off my PC to avoid conflict. It seems to be the only - or at least the easiest way to get my captivate into download mode but people are reporting issues. I really really don't want to go through the SDK with JRE install process since just reading it gives me a headache. Can you please advise?

I used Odin, not the one click variety, but the basic one. I followed this guide at android forums, which has been pointed to in many xda threads:
http://androidforums.com/captivate-...ng-adding-cwm-recovery-2-3-5-corn-kernel.html
It worked for me, in no small part because I printed out that web page and had the hardcopy in front of me as I completed the steps.

[Q] SGS screen error after update to Gingerbread

After flashing gingerbread 2.3.3XWJVH deodexed to my SGS using this guide
*Cannot be shown, first post :/*
My problem is that at boot and right before the home screen displays the device shows a distorted assortment of colours, different everytime.
Anybody have any ideas of the cause / solution?
Cheers guys.
You need updated bootloader for Gingerbread firmware.
Intratech is correct, download a gingerbread rom with bootloaders included, flash through odin with repartition and update bootloader both ticked

Can this have to be done via the same method I used before? (ODIN)
Or can it be done as an addition step? I have a sneaking suspicion it's the prior.
Thanks for the quick reply by the way.
EDIT: Answered before I even posted, you guys are so quick you are in the future.
One more thing, could you link me to the files needed to ensure the gingerbread update is pre rooted, as this one was?
Also, I just read that in it's current state my phone can't go into recovery mode, does that mean that if this next update goes wrong, I'm screwed?
No need to repartition, just get rom with bootloader. Same as before with Odin, the firmware will include the bootloader.

Thank you for your help, all sorted now. All I need to find now is a way to root this and install CWM to it.
I know it's rather unrelated and I shall seek out/ make a new threat if I can't get an answer here, but would you recommend the installation of the ported TouchWiz 4 update.zip at the moment?

Go to the dev section and look for the CF-Root thread, it will root and install CWM to your phone. TW4 is a major improvement on TW3 that comes with SGS. I have a SGS II now as well and I love TW4 so if you can install it on your ROM then go for it. Make sure you do a nandroid backup in CWM recovery in case anything gets messed up so you can just restore before installing it though.
Try flashing Cieto's JVHbase Rom from my signature. It's very stable and very fast. Here'sthe link for front facing camera fix. Try his rom. You will be blown away by how good it is. He is very quick to give support as well. The difference with battery life and speed compared to stock JVH from samfirmware.com is huge.

I'm currently looking at Tweaky V4.1. It looks to be what I'm after I'm just not sure if it is compatible with my current set up.
I will check out Cieto's Rom too.

[Q] Heimdall Question

Hey,
I used Heimdall to flash KH3 as per the thread, including these steps:
" I'm on stock froyo, kb1, flashed to it using this: heimdall at&t stock firmware package. Can i flash UCKH3 that Adam linked in the OP over this? Is it enough to click on bottom left button (details), then write true in the Flash column to the IBL+PBL, SBL, PARAM rows to flash bootloaders too? Thanks for the answers!
yes. You should not have any problems." (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238093&highlight=heimdall&page=2)
I wanted to double check that after changing those variables to 'true' and flashing I have the bootloaders already flashed. (I understand now that it lets you click 'flash bootloaders' after you flash once successfully, but I wanted to check to see if that is still necessary given the above method). No reason to risk flashing them again if I already got 'em.
Thanks for the help... would've replied directly in development forum but not enough posts
Yes you can, but I don't know if there is a way to root it with one-click yet. I need to release an early 2.3 version before they locked it down.
Btw.. I make Heimdall One-Click which is based on Heimdall by Benjamin Dobell.
It's also worth mentioning that you should flash, and only if it does not work, then flash again with bootloaders.
You really should have asked in the one-click thread.

The flash 'worked' but I'm not 100% sure whether I have the bootloaders.... all the parts seemed to flash correctly though...
The reason I asked in here is because I don't have my 10 posts yet, or else I would definitely have chosen to ask in the correct thread.
I don't really mind that it isn't rooted for now, but it doesn't seem to have an APN list at all so I've got no data. Otherwise, this is definitely the best stock I've ever used, decent battery life and relatively fast performance. Just got a replacement unit, so GPS finally worked for one day... until I flashed and had no data, lol.
Thanks for the help, btw. I probably will try to flash it again and see if that works, otherwise I will boot into windows and try Cog5 or one of the other KH3s with CWM recovery.
*EDIT* Didn't reflash (yet), but found the setting which lets you try the 'default' APN settings, so was able to get the regular cingular/att settings and connect from there. So I'm sticking with stock until a KH3 or newer kernel/rom with CWM+root that looks worthwhile comes out. **

There were two download links..one was boot loader free ..other was different one.
Can you please send me the the right steps and link for downloading
thanks
Another resource is
MobileTechVideos <- good video guides.
That being said, modifiying your phone can lead to hard bricks. So above all read and understand everything. Most of the danger is flashing bootloaders (that's why you see packages with and without bootloaders, to limit the danger). If you corrupt one of the bootloaders or flash 2 different (none matching) bootloaders you need a Jtag or UnbrickableMod service. When flashing Gingerbread you NEED gingerbread bootloaders. Once flashed you are golden and don't have flash those ever again.

i checked above forum where u helped the guy with upgrading UCJI6 to GB.
He had issues while upgrading but eventually he was succesfull.
I could not find which method he used ..
please help me if possible
Read up on how to get in Download mode and how to use ODIN (or Heimdall if you are running a none windows machine). Download a Stock gingerbread rom with bootloaders and flash. The latest is KK4, but i've never used that specific package (though it should have bootloaders) I can speak for KJ3 on that thread.
Basics.
Open ODIN (1 click or not) as admind
Get in download mode (press vol up+voldown+connect to computer
If normal ODIN use the PDA slot and select the .rar.md5 package
Hit start
Let it finish and bootup
???
profit
I'm not responsible if anytthing should go wrong. If odin gets stuck or you do something wrong you will soft brick or possibly hardbrick your phone.
i am giving up.
Can not find any links and steps which are of great help for Upgrading to GB from UCJI6.
Some are going back to 2.1 before upgarding some not.
Dont know what to do
Going back to stock is-was only used for cwm flashes. You will use ODIN. 2 way different things. Follow my steps. Or read through the tons of threads here. It isn't that hard.

he gave up because he couldnt find EXACT instructions on going from one particular FROYO build....because if he had done any actual research, he would know that it doesnt matter what version of FROYO he is on, he will need to flash the ODIN package with the bootloaders....its all covered in the vast damn posts that already cover this extensively. there was ZERO reason to fire up a new thread.
he has been linked to good info and has refused to take heed. reading and UNDERSTANDING is more important than holding hands around here.
Yes we were all noobs once and yes, you need to do your research but he's obviously nervous and not understanding what he's reading right now. Hopefully he'll calm down and understand the information he's been given. We're done here.

[Q] Rooting Samsung Galaxy Note LA6

Hi All, I've had this Samsung Galaxy Note for a few weeks now and have read over the rooting posts several times. Firstly I am 2.3.6, I realised I cannot directly root this phone and will need to downgrade, I've found the links with info and stock roms... however what I am not sure about is the specific version.
I really don't want to brick the phone!!!
Baseband Version: N7000XXLA4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35-7-N7000XXLA6-CL907341
[email protected]#2
I did find an LA6 rom but could not find one with the same modem version. Also going back to the old directly rootable roms, there is a huge choice, none of which match what I have so far... so really just wanting to know to work out which one to pick while keeping root and getting to version I have now??
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Is there a specific reason for keeping the reason you have?
The reason am asking is because you can use the pre rooted ROMs in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
And you will end up with a newer ROM and root..
Modem is not an issue, you can flash the type you want and suits you best after accomplishing root..
No I guess not... just all is working well as it is but was just concerned about general compatibility but will give the europe one a go. Thanks
Aztec_Uk,
Did you manage to root your Note ?
I'm on the same build as you and would like to get rid of all my bloat ?

Hi, have to say I haven't worked up the courage to do it yet... I wish I could root and do a backup before playing... but the only way is to either downgrade as in other post or use these pre-rooted roms... this debating what to do... I really don't want to brick it or goto something I cannot roll back, as it works great at the moment but obviously bloatey and no root.....
Take courage!
@Aztec_UK and DblCng, just over a week ago I was where you are. Take heart, if you encounter problems and post them here clearly, there are some really expert and generous XDA members here who will help you. I will even try myself if I see you encountering something I ran into.
I opted for the Chainfire method and in this thread. starting at post #1170 you can read an almost blow-by-blow account of what I encountered and the help I got. Thanks list in post #1220. I didn't expect it to be all plain sailing and it wasn't. I do advise you to make sure you have enough time before you start - in the end it took me most of 3 days (and nights). Another tip I haven't found anywhere (though it's almost certainly here somewhere) is to forward your calls to somewhere else before you start. You don't want people ringing you on the phone when you're in the middle of rooting it.
My Note is now rooted and running just fine, and I'm having a great time zapping bloatware and foiling phone-homers.

Hi syncopath, thanks for replying... seems like a very friendly and helpful place.
I have a work colleague who was also like you and like I am now... then to get proxy support he rooted.... Then he took a while to eventually take the plunge and go for ICS 4.04... It was this week he came into my office and said... I've done it... sat there for 10 mins crossing fingers.
He had a slightly older stock rom on his note, it meant he could do a direct root without flashing and he also was able to do a good backup via root method...
I think the thing holding me back is that fact I can't make that solid back... I have to flash first... believe me I have hacked about with lots of phones and firmwares in my time, HTCs, Blackberrys, Nokia and done a jailbreak on an iPhone 4S... somehow this time around it's taking me longer to work the courage up, I've read a few posts on here.. of people ending up with a brick and no warranty... I just dread this situation... or if something should go wrong later I'd want to un-root so I had warranty... Any advice what any of you guys would do in my situation.. believe me I want root and to try ICS... I am twitchy! - just a bloated stock rom with no root is better than a brick/paper weight!!

I have the same model with LA4 modem and LA6 kernel. Use the XEU file from the pre rooted thread here as posted above, works perfect. The modem in that file is indeed an LA4, but like matius44 says you can flash any modem. For no wipe only flash the PDA file with PC Odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
After that you can download mobile odin pro from the market and flash the ICS repack leak. Make sure to select the 3 root options in mobile odin before going to the repack or you will lose your root. The LA4 modem seems fine in ICS, but i did try the newest modem as well.
I followed the instructions for a clean install in the ICStunner thread. Make sure to read down to post #4.Stick with 1.4.19 if you choose stunner. Awsome smooth stable rom.

Hi Kushracer
Your post was well put out and friend, will tick thanks button in a minute... ok, I followed step one.. put into download mode, already downlodeaded the rom you suggested before a few days ago... and PC Odin too... So, I did as you suggested and flashed just the PDA part... crossed fingers, it rebooted and I can confirm thanks to you I am rooted!!!
Before I go for next step I am going to ensure I do backup everything as much as possible and will be trying ICS tomorrow!!!
Your right I feel so much better... that was not that bad... and just the PDA section is replaced the same with Rooted!... Your advice did help me get the confidence to hit the button... Well pleased
Will keep you posted tomorrow on my next step... for me this is enough for the minute, got more time tomorrow so will have a long backup/ICS session then
Thanks

found here:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
I chose:- 3*Files No-Wipe N7000XXLA6_N7000OXEULA1_XEU Europe (03/02/2012)
downloaded and flashed via PC Odin... Crossed fingers and it worked, I had FULL root!
Then I Followed part of the second link as:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552554 I followed the part about backing up my EFS (highly recommended!!) - that was as far as I went that night..
The following day I spoke to a work collegue... and went a different root to flash ICS.. I downloaded ICS Stunner 1.4.19 then used this method:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614443 You must follow it step by step and I had to do a CF-Root to get CWM and then after that flashed Abyss to get RedPill... from there I flashed ICS and LP6 rooted kernel..
However I have noticed I do have root but I cannot write or mouse system for write access... so I have not got full root... I have re-read what to do about this and may need to reflash a different rom, however I already tested re-flashing first link with PC Odin which gives me GB Full root after ICS, so I am gonna play for a bit and retry this later... but you do have a quite safe roll back..
I was scared as hell to do any of this and a few days ago had a stock Samsung and did not want to root or reflash... I think as long as you follow instructions, check other users posts on how they get on, make sure your battery is charged, use a UPS or laptop with good battery (incase of power cut) then you should be ok, but you do take a risk of ending up with a brick, my biggest fear... so far trying to get full root I've re-done this 3 times!
Happy I did and think it's worth it as this rom is nice, thinking of trying 1.4.26 soon...
Hope this helps and good luck...
Same procedure... with ICS 1.26.1 .... now full root! - But nice safe way of trying ICS...... Looks like I gottta get the hang of Mobile Odin....
2 days ago I was scared but now I have the confidence to flash the rom on SGN
thanks for your info, i was very flash happy when on desire z i have flashed almost all the roms. but galaxy note seems slight different, but glad to see at least you get root work, i might just root and remove bloatware first and see how smooth it is, will think about flashing rom later might even just wait for ota ics
Aztec that was good of you but as long as u know how i feel that i have galaxy note and i cant do anything no root no ics can u help me about it by controlin my pc or tellin me what to do i need to root it so bad and i have kernal that doesn't let me root so i have to downgrade thats all the info that i have so if u have anytime free to help me i would be really thankfull because am sure u know how i feel or anyhelp on msn or skype chat that would be great

Follow the path he did. Seemed like it went really smooth for him. Just have to take that first step and take you time.

Yes indeed it did! - Now on ICS 1.46.26.1 with full root, yes I can mount /system as RW and copy file in it... Full root! - So happy

[Q] Captivate 2.2 Froyo to X-Bean

Re: [ROM][4.1.1][PORT] X-Bean **2.0** (fast, stable & superfunctional)
Been browsing for an update on AT&T Captivate SGH-I897 Froyo 2.2 and now on T-Moble
Unlocked, rooted with SOC and CWM recovery..
Read thru development on X-Bean **2.0**
Understood to get: x-bean 1.1Base.zip / gapps-jb20121011-signed.zip / BUT not sure which kernal!!
Early the thread states Devil 1.0.4vc but most recently suggests alternative of semaphore 2.0.3c.
Am I correct in thinking both work, just the semaphore is newer?
Thanks

Appreciate the reply BWolf56!
I will be sure to use either the kernals with the "c" suffix as suggested in the original thread!
NOW! Trying to decide on the best Backup App..

TiBu is my personal fav.
UPDATE... Again, thanks BWolf56!
AT&T Captivate on FROYO 2.2. OneClickRoot, CWM Recovery V2.5.1.2
Did ROM backup, TiBu backup, EFS, APN, Contacts etc
Installed/Flashed:
ROM X-Bean1.1 base.zip
gapps-jb-2012101-signed.zip
Semaphore_jb_2.0.3c.zip
landscape_fix.zip
Phone booted up fine initially, would always revert to landscape view, back button was now the home button.
Could not find any of my backups. "UI" kept crapping out; "Unfortunately UI is not responding" Think that's what it said!
Had to click OK and it was back until i touched anything and kept happening...
Did Advanced Restore -> CWM Recovery of: System, Data, Cache, ext/sd
Phone rebooted.... Stuck on AT&T logo screen, charging pinwheel shows but doesn't move.
Cannot get into recovery.. managed to get into "dowload mode"
tried i897UCJF6-final-OCD-REVO.zip loaded on computer, phone connected in download mode,
loaded PIT file only as the zip had no PAD file....... NO SUCCESS
If I proceeded in a NOOB fashion, it's because I am so I'll take my licks Lol
Any help would be appreciated!
Figured it best to just get back to stock 2.2, maybe even earlier since I wouldn't have the 3e recovery
problem not being able to install from OTHER sources. Then TRY again after brushing up!!!!!!!!

Did you flash a I9000 ROM? If so, you need the I9000 bootloaders.
Also to downgrade android version, you have to use Odin (i suggest kk4 without bootloaders if you already have the gb ones, which can be found in the stickies).
Make sure you follow the full instructions next time to avoid issues like that.

Ahhh, fello Canadian i see!
You may be correct thinking i have I9000 "JB"? bootloaders!, in the original
thread : Aceofspades replied to a member question stating: "Port means that this
rom is originally made for i9000 and made it to work for captivate."
Should I assume I've flashed an I9000 Rom? and now have JB bootloader?
Thinking back, I did not wipe before going back and using recovery! Not sure that was the problem
but it was on reboot after restoring CWM/system. data. cache etc that the phone rebooted and ended up
in a continual cycling of the ATT logo screen!
Big question now is how do I do to remedy my situation!!
NOTE...I have made a JIG and can get into "download Mode" now
From this point on I'll document my every move in order to be able to provide
the exact procedure I went through... might be more helpful !!
I know I know... NOOB! Lol
PS, is an alternative to use Kies Mini and update to Gingerbread?

First thing: don't use kies at all!
There are no JB bootloaders for the cappy, just eclair, froyo and GB. If the ROM is a port, you'll most likely have to flash the I9000 gb bootloaders but I'd suggest finding another ROM to start with (like CM). Playing with bootloaders is the only thing that will make your phone a paper weight if something goes wrong.
Also, bootloaders aren't included in roms for safety measures. That being said, you can run ICS and JB roms just fine with the GB bootloaders.
As for what comes next. Perhaps use Odin to flash stock kk4 without bootloaders, from there flash corn kernel (once again with Odin) and give CM a whirl following their full flashing instructions. (Which can be found both in their thread and website)

Understood... NO KIES
Sorry but a little confused still...
Do I Odin flash KK4 w/o bootloaders first -> flash corn kernal with Odin -> then flash a CM ROM using their procedure?
Where in the sequence is "flash I9000 bootloaders?
* No luck finding Odin w/o bootloaders yet, outdated download sites. Will search through xda again.
Noted! "There are no JB bootloaders for the cappy, just eclair, froyo and GB." (I was originally ATT captivate on FROYO 2.2)

I might be a little hazy on the order of your suggestions so thanks for the patience!
GREATLY APPRECIATING YOUR EFFORTS!!

For now, forget about the I9000 bootloaders.
Here's KK4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3
During your flashing, did you ever flash the GB bootloaders? If not, get the version with bootloaders and make the the flashing isnt't interrupted.
And yeah, from there you got it right, corn kernel; and follow their full flashing instructions.

* I haven't knowingly flashed GB bootloaders.
* I've been all over the link you provided... no working downloads.
Hmmm, I did try "Odin" a couple of times to get the GingerBread update...After doing that my phone now
boots to the AT&T logo, goes black for a sec and a screen like a bad tv signal comes up! Also, the phone
is now charging and showing the big battery icon! I seem to recall reading somewhere that if that happens
it may be wrong bootloaders? Can't remember exactly what it said but am I correct thinking it was one of
your own replies to another member?
Anyway, done for the night Grrrr
Thanks so much!
Here is a post with a pic about the screen u r seeing. Pixelated screen means u don't have the GB bootloaders... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33227557&postcount=2
And i am currently in the process of uploading my Odin and Heimdall Stock KK4 One Clicks. Gonna be using MediaFire. Will post when all uploads are done and new links attached to my post #3 in the Stock Rom stickied thread in the Development forum...

Appreciate you taking the time to reply! The images you displayed are exactly what I am seeing..
Links aren't good forever, i realize that just hard to believe I hadn't found them ANYWHERE yet! Lol
PS ************
* Have since got GB Bootloaders and added thru Odin3 v1.70.. PDA.tar.md5
* Now able to get into recovery mode by 3-button, shows 3e recovery, have ability to install from sdcard,
wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition.
* I have an "update.zip" on there but can't remember what it's for so I didn't do it...
but still no UI coming up, just the AT&T logo which cycles ON/OFF
Am I still in the same boat... needing KK4 Odin flash, after doing that will i be able to copy
a KK4 ROM zip to my phone thru PC and flash from the phone?

KK4 is a one click Odin.
From there, you'll have to use Odin 1.85 or 1.87 to flash Corn kernel to be able to flash your way up to CM.

Hey there!
* 4-2ndtwin chimed in and said he would post when he uploaded them.
Been looking in the meantime.
* I have both Odin versions, now understand that I can use Odin to flash any file I choose, such as the Corn kernal, not just files it may come with.
* I downloaded a "Stocki897uckk4-zImage.tar, unzipping shows "zImage" file but I
haven't touched it.
Just hanging in for a working link for the Odin KK4 One-Click I guess...
Question!!!
For clarification..Odin KK4 One-Click is just bootloaders, kernal and maybe modem, right? It's not going to give me a working ROM...OR, is it ALSO an alternative way to flash a ROM when I can't add a ROM zip to my phone thru my PC to flash?
Lol... I'll get a handle on this, more of a visual type
As usual, appreciate the help!

Still browsing ROMS...
Should I be bothered rooting yet? Not sure if I'll just have to do it again after a ROM switch?
Any suggestions for a root utility?

I suggest you start with CM.
As for rooting, you can get it directly on the store now (was recently made legal). I believe it's by chainfire. But do you need it atm?
Also, all custom roms come pre-rooted.
