Has anyone got a custom bootanimation working on this thing yet? I tried installing mine to /system/media but haven't tried anywhere else yet. If someone can figure this out I can start making bootanimations for whoever wants one. Can make them out of gifs as well.

The boot animations for this phone are .rle's and put nicely in the ramdisk. I am not set up on Linux yet and have not found another way to edit them in Windows.

Oh ok, I have a dual boot setup on my laptop with Ubuntu 11.04. I have to work tonight and will pretty much be free the whole night so I'll see what I can figure out and hopefully make some progress.

Ya, I am planning on getting set up on dual boot, but haven't had the time to sit down and do it.
It should actually be pretty easy, I have gotten the boot.img broken down and the files separate, but it just will not let me edit them in Windows. It has been very frustrating. I just need to take some time to get Linux up and running. Good luck! Nice to have you on board! This phone has its quirks, but is still a pretty strong beast! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

If you're looking for an easy setup you can do it the same way I did. I just downloaded "Wubi" from the Ubuntu website, then downloaded the Ubuntu 11.04 ISO. Put those 2 files in the same folder on your desktop. Mount the Ubuntu ISO with Magic Disk or whatever virtual drive you use. When the Auto Play box comes up click on "Install using Wubi." Once that's done that's it. When your PC reboots it will give you the option to boot in either Windows 7 or Ubuntu. Boot in Ubuntu, set everything up then download Java6 and you're set.
I'm kind of surprised with this phone because I haven't had any problems at all with it "yet." Battery life seems pretty good but then again I've tweaked a little on SetCPU. Kinda sucks that there's only 2 or 3 people doing anything with this phone but I'm sure it will grow, this device only came out in May.

You can use paint.net to edit the rle after converting them to png files from inside windows.
The windows app for converting from rle to image and back is available on the XDA forums.
It was easy to edit the pics but hadn't started looking into placing them back into the boot.
I'll post the converter on my site today.
Edit: Converter and paint.net are now posted in the boot_screen_logo_creation_package folder on my sever.
I tossed my Crap, Revolted and moved out of my Home.
Ya, its placing them back into the boot.img that is a pain.
Thanks spc_hicks09! I may give that a try soon!

I think it should be fine as long as you don't have it on on both computers.
Yeah I would just uninstall it from the other, and then install it on the new one using the same key. I'm pretty sure it will work. If not give adobe a call

I have an HP Pavilion dv4. And I was wondering if I could update to another software. Either Linux or Mac. I was wondering which was better as in perfomance and compatibility. I was also wondering if it was possible to do such.
Thanks in advance. I don't care if this question results in an opinion. That is my intention. To see what the thoughts are of the operating system.
Also, It'd be best if you do not trash an Operating system if you don't have it. It wouldn't make sense.
This will result in being your opinion. It depends on what you are planning to do with the PC. If you are planning to go into rom development, then Linux would be your best choice. If you just want a PC for gaming, everyday tasks, etc., then Windows would be your best option. Mac - I really don't see what that's good for . But once again, it's your opinion.
Putting OSX in "non-apple" hardware is technically illegal.
For general users, a lot of apps may not be compatible with Linux so it depends what you'll be using it for.
So unless you have a specific purpose or function to run Linux, stick with Windows..
Theonew is once again correct, Linux for developers and geeks etc.. Windows for Gamers and normal people. Mac is really for people that do video/photo editing and design and stuff like that. That's where you missed the point Theonew
Final Cut Pro is cutting edge in video editing and as a result it's only available for Mac OS X...
Well.. I want a pc with Geek super abilities since I do have an Android. So that crosses Mac off the list. Mac is of more use for people with iDevices
At the same time I want to play games like Minecraft.
Will Linux run .exe programs or is it like mac.. I highly doubt it will run .exe programs.. but better safe then sorry

Linux will not run executable files. It uses archives instead (e.g. tgz).
Moved to Off-Topic.
Why dont you try dual boot? You will have the best of both OS's.
Sent from my MZ601 using XDA Premium HD app
If you're interested in trying out different operating systems why don't you look into virtualization such as VMware.
You can use wine to run exe files on linux. However if you're just a casual user then it's really just a waste for you to try a Linux OS.

Is it illegal or simply a violation of TOS/User agreement?
There is a difference. One is criminal and the other is civil.
If you deem it "illegal" then how so? Just curious.

For ubuntu, just download wubi (available here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer)
It will beautifully setup a dualboot with windows and get your Linux environment setup in minutes. But one disclaimer, you will have to figure out how to get WiFi working. HP laptops and wireless don't get along well, be prepared to take some time to find the drivers. But if your using ethernet, you will probably be ready to go right out of the box

Did a quick search and found an issue with wifi on an HP Pavilion DV4 laptop. The fix was said to install "b43-fwcutter" & "bcmwl-kernel-source" (Source - Linuxquestions.org). You may want to take a look at this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8848735&postcount=5.

I think you misunderstand me quite a bit. I know plenty about rooting. This has nothing to do with rooting. ( i assume your referring to permission denied error) im not a noob. This error occurs in conjunction with terminal emulator saying the ubuntu img is corrupted. Its not. Anyways i was just looking for confirmation to see if anyone had actually got ubuntu for android working on n7000 and any advice they might have with this issue im running into

its all good thank you though! im really surprised this isnt more widespread. i had to actually go looking for the idea of putting a desktop OS on an android phone in google to find it. i figured the CM team and well heck everyone would be all over this. imagine replacing your laptop/desktop with just your phone. you dock your phone and poof ubuntu is up on your monitor. the true mobile desktop.
EDIT: not to mention your phone would be charging on this dock as you use it....GENIUS! and imagine if everyone had this dock solution, you could use your phone at any of your friends/ families/ schools/ work/ etc...
Buddy, I 2 m trying 2 do so for last 5 months... But no success yet... M not demoralising u but there is no way you can run ubuntu smoothly on SGN

Haven't seen one here so I decided to make one.
This thread is for talk about any thing Linux. Whether it be a distro, a kernel, OS, mobile Linux, anything! Keep on the topic of Linux, but feel free to talk about anything Linux!
Let me start and tell you my experience with Linux:
It started when my home computer got a virus while I was using Windows 7, tried everything to get it back. I got a recovery disk; nothing, I tried downgrading to xp; virus still persisted. I thought, let me try and use this thing (I called Linux a thing because I didn't know the word OS) a teacher recommended me trying. So I tried to install the latest build (at the time) of ubuntu, 11.04. The problem was that the screen was dim and nothing would be visible. So I had a friend come over who claims to be computer smart (not smart at all) and he said, "why not try an earlier version?" I thought "genius," so I installed it and I started using it. I loved it! It was easy to use and it was virus free! And now I am a happy user (from time to time because I need Windows for video editing) of the latest version of Linux ubuntu!

I see that you edited your OP. I retract my statement where I said you did not contribute to your own thread.

I kind of agree. Linux is an entire different animal than Winders, so it should have it's own thread.
But with the powers that be moving individual device O/T threads here, it'll just get lost in the clutter.

Some of us have tried it. We've tried to like it. The tablet interface needs to stay on tablets. It's not being afraid or resistant to change, it's that doesn't work well in the enterprise area, or is not ergonomically acceptable when it comes to touch screen lap/desktops.
The Metro interface is a reverse of what MSFT has done in the past. Instead of shoe-horning a desktop UI into a mobile device, they're trying to put the mobile device UI onto the desktop. Doesn't work that well in either instance.
It's just the start screen. The desktop I'd still there.

They both are good in there own way, but ubuntu in the future is going to be the dominate OS with Windows next and Mac third.

MSFT is pushing for it. They want software to go through them like Apple does with their store.
Yes, most software isn't Metro'ed yet, but some things I would use in Windows just might eventually go that way.
This isn't a Microsoft thread. STFU about Microsoft.
Anyway, has anyone tried Elementary OS Luna? It's still in beta but I think it's great.
I looked at some reviews of it... Joli OS? It's cool, a cloud OS, you need to register annd you can acces your OS from any browser, or you can boot it off a flash drive,or install it to your hard drive...

For most consumers that's a good thing. I think there's always going to be a disconnect between Linux users and mainstream consumer needs. Not that I don't agree but MS is a business and Apple has invented a successful money farm that any business would be happy to replicate.
How would you guys rate Fedora? I'm thinking about trying it.
