Haven't seen one here so I decided to make one.
This thread is for talk about any thing Linux. Whether it be a distro, a kernel, OS, mobile Linux, anything! Keep on the topic of Linux, but feel free to talk about anything Linux!
Let me start and tell you my experience with Linux:
It started when my home computer got a virus while I was using Windows 7, tried everything to get it back. I got a recovery disk; nothing, I tried downgrading to xp; virus still persisted. I thought, let me try and use this thing (I called Linux a thing because I didn't know the word OS) a teacher recommended me trying. So I tried to install the latest build (at the time) of ubuntu, 11.04. The problem was that the screen was dim and nothing would be visible. So I had a friend come over who claims to be computer smart (not smart at all) and he said, "why not try an earlier version?" I thought "genius," so I installed it and I started using it. I loved it! It was easy to use and it was virus free! And now I am a happy user (from time to time because I need Windows for video editing) of the latest version of Linux ubuntu!

I kind of agree. Linux is an entire different animal than Winders, so it should have it's own thread.
But with the powers that be moving individual device O/T threads here, it'll just get lost in the clutter.

Some of us have tried it. We've tried to like it. The tablet interface needs to stay on tablets. It's not being afraid or resistant to change, it's that doesn't work well in the enterprise area, or is not ergonomically acceptable when it comes to touch screen lap/desktops.
The Metro interface is a reverse of what MSFT has done in the past. Instead of shoe-horning a desktop UI into a mobile device, they're trying to put the mobile device UI onto the desktop. Doesn't work that well in either instance.
It's just the start screen. The desktop I'd still there.

They both are good in there own way, but ubuntu in the future is going to be the dominate OS with Windows next and Mac third.

MSFT is pushing for it. They want software to go through them like Apple does with their store.
Yes, most software isn't Metro'ed yet, but some things I would use in Windows just might eventually go that way.
This isn't a Microsoft thread. STFU about Microsoft.
Anyway, has anyone tried Elementary OS Luna? It's still in beta but I think it's great.
I looked at some reviews of it... Joli OS? It's cool, a cloud OS, you need to register annd you can acces your OS from any browser, or you can boot it off a flash drive,or install it to your hard drive...

For most consumers that's a good thing. I think there's always going to be a disconnect between Linux users and mainstream consumer needs. Not that I don't agree but MS is a business and Apple has invented a successful money farm that any business would be happy to replicate.
How would you guys rate Fedora? I'm thinking about trying it.

To answer the OP there are several products for creating a Disk Image. Acronis make a good one:
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/
Vista/Windows 7 have built in imaging capability but as you're on XP you'll have to pay for something. If you're doing a fresh install though, i don't see the benefit of imaging your drive as it is now. It would make sense to do it after you've reinstalled and re-configured your OS so that you have a clean image to go back to in future. What can you do with an image of an old, tired install?
Perhaps you'd just be better off just backing up all of your important data onto a spare drive and forgetting about the image?
Good. Then the noobs will change settings less.

Honestly I would just run a quick google search (recovery disk/iso for model#) if you can't find any free or cheap available for your model then I would stick to the recovery software option.. there's too many to count but you can usually find free trials for these recovery tools. If not, send me a PM.

Thanks for that. At recommendations from several sources it looks like DriveImageXML is the best place to start.
On a separate note I'm thinking going Linux. From what I've read it sounds like it's community built and supported, much like CM. If that's the case I'm sure I'll love it.

Sent From My Fingers To Your Face.....
I have an HP Pavilion dv4. And I was wondering if I could update to another software. Either Linux or Mac. I was wondering which was better as in perfomance and compatibility. I was also wondering if it was possible to do such.
Thanks in advance. I don't care if this question results in an opinion. That is my intention. To see what the thoughts are of the operating system.
Also, It'd be best if you do not trash an Operating system if you don't have it. It wouldn't make sense.
This will result in being your opinion. It depends on what you are planning to do with the PC. If you are planning to go into rom development, then Linux would be your best choice. If you just want a PC for gaming, everyday tasks, etc., then Windows would be your best option. Mac - I really don't see what that's good for . But once again, it's your opinion.
Putting OSX in "non-apple" hardware is technically illegal.
For general users, a lot of apps may not be compatible with Linux so it depends what you'll be using it for.
So unless you have a specific purpose or function to run Linux, stick with Windows..
Theonew is once again correct, Linux for developers and geeks etc.. Windows for Gamers and normal people. Mac is really for people that do video/photo editing and design and stuff like that. That's where you missed the point Theonew
Final Cut Pro is cutting edge in video editing and as a result it's only available for Mac OS X...

If you're interested in trying out different operating systems why don't you look into virtualization such as VMware.
You can use wine to run exe files on linux. However if you're just a casual user then it's really just a waste for you to try a Linux OS.

For ubuntu, just download wubi (available here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer)
It will beautifully setup a dualboot with windows and get your Linux environment setup in minutes. But one disclaimer, you will have to figure out how to get WiFi working. HP laptops and wireless don't get along well, be prepared to take some time to find the drivers. But if your using ethernet, you will probably be ready to go right out of the box
