I've heard about how the FBI has caught people by tracking embedded information in pictures and videos. I was wondering what all can be found out thru pictures? I know you CAN have GPS tagging on, but aside from turning that setting on, what all can be found out just from a picture?

It's all in the EXIF.
You get the camera maker, model, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and a whole bunch of other stuff.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exchangeable_image_file_format#Example
^ That.
Even Windows Explorer can read EXIF data. Just rightclick on a Photo --> Properties --> Details. (--> Advanced on XP)
Frankly, if you're on the run and you're too stupid to realize that all the data your camera lists when you view back a photo is linked to the photo file itself, then you deserve to be caught.
EXIF can also store your location if you take pictures with your phone. In Android's case it should ask you if you want to store the location in your photos the first time you open the camera app. You should also be able to enable and disable it in the cam settings.
You can also easily change the EXIF data, but I can't see any reason to why you would do that unless you want to troll people.

Troll or try to devert someone trying to find you!
Also to pretend to be somewhere you're not. Like for instance if you shopped an image to appear on a cliff then changed the EXIF to better forge it.
If you do not want to be tracked... do not put a bloody picture of your current location on the internet!

I was playing around with W.I.M.P. (Where is my phone) yesterday and I noticed an area that I think would make this program, or any other for that matter much more powerful.
Theory behind WIMP is that it sends back a text with GPS co-ordinates to another phone, not so great if theres 3 pubs within very close proximity, like in town. Soooo. my next thought was what if the phone was used at a camera post-being stolen.
I imagine the way this would work is that a photo would be taken from the thefts perpective using the standard back camera. However another additional photo is taken from the front camera with GPS data packaged into the JPG properties ala GPS Photo.
You'd get a shot of said thief, some decor in the background which Im sure would help work out where they are, you'd also have evidence of the theft and who took the phone, with time and date stamps, which when tallied against a police report would prove the photo was taken after the fact.
Im surprised this feature isnt available anywhere yet, or perhaps im talking tosh, or even that my google skills are lacking.
Anyhoo what do you funky brothers think?
I think that is a great idea now all we need is somone smart enuff to make make this porgram work like that lol
I think you would get a lot of pics of peoples pockets. Then you would know what pants they have on.

If you were able to find someone smart enough to make the front camera work on your Tilt....then writing the software should be cake.
Laptop recovery.
They have this type of software on Apple lappies.
Have a look at the engadget link
http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/11/stolen-laptop-recovered-with-back-to-my-mac/
That would be a neat feature but you would also probably get a bunch of bad images (tables, pockets, hands).

Yes, and if you noticed the person I actually quoted has "Using: AT&T Tilt" in his/her signature.
Is that even possible?
Wow! Now that would really be something. I would definitely be installing such an app on my next device especially in face of my Kaiser being stolen 2 weeks ago.
I think the problem with picuters of people's pockets and pub tables could be easily solved by setting the application to transmit only the pictures actually taken by the person in possesion of the phone after the theft. This way you could make sure the pictures sent, were taken when the person in question was holding the phone in front of them actaully trying to take a picture of sth.
This creates other problems of course like: what if the thief never uses the camera? But I think all mobile phone users try the camera out (no matter how poor it could be) at least once. So receiving a good quality picture would only be a matter of time.
What are you guys using to view images on your device? i am using root explorer to browse around my sd card, but whenever i try to open an image, it launches the gallery, and it either freezes or crashes.
Any Suggestions?

Fish Bowl
Huge fan of Fish Bowl. I'm a photographer so I end up with thousands of pictures (it's nice to have a portable portfolio when meeting new clients) and Fishbowl has an interface that basically just makes one big image card for each of my galleries so I can swipe through hundreds of pics fast and click on the one I am looking for.
Only downside is it's not multitouch but doesn't affect use really, just trips me up sometimes when comming from other apps. The last time I sent an email off to the Dev he had my suggestion in the next build a few days later so I feel guilty asking for multitouch now when it's already a really good app.

I'm a photographer too and use my Nook often to show proofs and sell shots. Thanks for the tip on Fish bowl, I'll give it wirl. Do you find it can reproduce decent quality jpegs fast? I do resize my shots appropriately for the Nook, but of course I want the best resolution possible. I have found Quick decent and I prefer the 3D Gallery's interface but not the speed or quality.
Thanks again for the tip on Fish Bowl, I'll give it a shot.
Edit: Photo Gallery (fish bowl beta) is sweat! Just about knocked my socks off, a great recommendation.
Yeah I had the same reaction when I saw Fish Bowl the first time too. I was pretty sure I was going to have to buy an iPad just to get a presentation system that looked polished and ran silky smooth but this app just does what I need it to. Now I'm thinking I'll pick up a Asus Transformer with the larger, higher resolution and great viewing angle screen and be able to show even bigger pictures without having to shovel money into Apples coffers.
wow thanks for the suggestions i tried just pictures, and quick pic last night they seemed to work well. im very interested in fishbowl now.
Fishbowl is awesome. Thanks guys
Hey guys, i am interested in knowing how to decompile videos, most mp4's into their individual frames. I tried almost all of the programs online and none of them work for me, and i was wondering if anyone here knew.
Thanks!
You try Adobe Premiere Pro?

Yes. ^^ cause we all know here that videos are individual frames, and when played at 30 per second, makes a smooth video. So I just want a program that will split the video into the frames that make it up, as individual files such as JPGs, PNGs etc
And I will try adobe premier, thanks for the suggestion.

With After Effects CS5 you can take the video and render it as a PNG sequence or JPEG sequence. I think that's what you're looking for.
I believe it's possible with Photoshop CS5/6 also.

Why not just put the video on the timeline in Vegas and find the parts of the video you want stills from and save them? Just go frame by frame with the left/right arrow key and save as jpg.

The software I linked, you just attach the video and press a button and it just shoots out jpgs to whichever folder you want it saved to. Seems like a lot less work to me. But to each his or her own.

Yeah, Vegas does that too. My point was, if you don't want to end up with 1000s of jpgs you'll never need, you can take little extra time and jog thru the video and just save portions of it as an image sequence.

I was wondering if private mode is really useful to the average person.
I'm not using my phone for work purposes. It's all mine.
I'm not downloading warez or viewing porn.
I'm not running suspicious apps.
I keep the phone fingerprint locked and have remote lock capability. If I decide to participate in a public protest I'll take further steps.
Do any of you other "normal people" find that private mode is useful and if so, why?
What no porn. What is wrong with you?
BAD ASS NOTE 4
I use Private Mode to hide files that I want private. Both work related and personal. That way one of my kids or wife doesn't mess up anything when they are using my phone. Or one of my drunken friends, or a co-worker, or a....and the list goes on.
To me it's not about hiding things. It's about protecting digital assets that are important to me from less advanced users. Of course I do maintain both a cloud backup and laptop backup. But by just taking a few seconds to ensure that files I really care about are locked away, I can sleep easier.

dont use private mode; I teach my kids and wife not to touch my phone, so they dont..
Private mode is especially useful for me. I'm going to travel out of the country soon, and have to take a lot of identification. It's a 3rd world country, so on the side of caution, I took pictures of anything important, SSN's etc... Now, if something happens to my phone, I'm ****ed. They can easily pop out the MicroSD and read all my images (no bueno), so I use private mode to encrypt important photos such as these, because in reality, it can be nice to have in a pinch, but it's not something you should share with the world.
Private mode, what's that? LOL

I tried in a mall the samsung note 8 and was disappointed by how the pages of a paper book where not clearly taken.
I do not know if is the autofocus or the small distance. I basically use a lot this feature and find annoying while I maintain the page open with one hand to make a photo if the zoom does not work properly. Usually I block the book and click on the screen so to take a photo. Does someone has recommendations? I wrote here because on the internet cannot find nothing, and for me is an important use case
I take lots of photos of documents and pages of books and magazines, and they are ok
well no actually, I bought it, best device ever, and the pics are spectacular, but still if i maintain with one hand the book, and make pics with the other hand some are great others like that
maybe I move my hand while I am doing the picture, maybe I should find a way to stay with the phone immobile

a bit of a low light enviroment for auto mode and text but just tap the screen once where the text is and then take a picture.
In pro mode there are tons of other adjustments. try to use the software to adjust the focus functionality and lightning to take photos on the go. once you find the right mix, use that mode from now on for those particular tasks.

But I do not need it, just want to read something that for various reasons I do not have as digital.
