I just watched two videos in YouTube, 1 comparing the n4 to iPhone5 and the iPhone 5 display was significantly better and the second video composting the n4, DNA, s3, razr maxx hd and I must say the nexus 4 wasn't bad at all except at color reproduction :s
So based on your experience guys perhaps you could tell me how you find the display quality?

It's watched out at stock. But most kernels for the nexus 4 integrate a code to fully unlock the true potential of the phone's display.

just flash one of franco's lastest kernel or PA contrasty kernel and see how a real nexus 4 screen suppose to look.
i see very little improvement from these so called kernals.
The screen is average at best. Sharpness is good but the colour range sucks. You cant improve the colour without actually making it look worse in other areas.
I think the screens from LG are just poor in general. Their LED TV's suck and their monitors are also crap. The panels they make not great and only their A+ panels are any good but mostly they get boosted by powerful engines provided by people who actually can make screens look good.
The problem with LG is that they are a middle of the road company who make middle of the road quality products. We are just lucky with the Nexus is that its been priced accordingly.

It's not as colorful as other displays. If you like amoled then you will be disappointed. When compared to my Lumia 920, the colors are much more life-like. I actually prefer the Nexus 4 screen to the Lumia. To each his own though.

Bahahaha.
I was pretty sceptical when people were changing gamma values etc, how much of a difference could it really make. I flashed the latest matrix kernel with the new moles values and wow, it's pretty much night and day, colours look as vibrant as the one x screen. Basically the kernels seem to be doing the calibration that Google didn't do. I though I must say I did enjoy the stock colours but ill probably keep the more vibrant settings because I enjoy what matrix does with his kernels.

There is a reason why apple's IPS panels use LG and not SHARP
Yes apple buy the higher quality screens from lg. And lg makes its own phones with crappy screens. Same name IPS different quality.

Yeh and as usual you have no idea how apple comes out on top and LG sit at the bottom by both using screens from the same factory.

Firstly kernels won't work because every screen is unique and colour settings don't work because they are not one size fits all.
Every screen has to be calibrated on its own

Did the founder of LG touch you as a child? I use an LG 1440p panel and an LG 1080p panel and both have amazing quality.

I owned an iPhone 5 since launch and can say the display is better in terms of brightness and color representation.
The Nexus 4 can come close when paired with the proper kernel and settings. (I use Franco's kernel)
Where the Nexus 4 shines is the crispness and size of the display.
I don't think the N4 is washed out whatsoever. I think the problem is, people are used to overly-saturated displays. People want the colours to be vibrant and bright, but in reality, that isn't how a colour looks. I always think a good example is to take a photo of something, and then look at it on the screen. Is that how it looks in real life? If it's covered in brightly coloured bloom, then you know your screen is probably too saturated.
Mine has amazing color reproduction. Watching a video and all colors look great. I would love to be able to do some minor calibration, but the screen doesn't look washed out at all. It's definitely a case of people being used to over-saturated displays.

Seems like every time a new nexus seems like in the first three months you can't say anything negative about the phone. It must be better than everything else or bust. Its like the phone you own defines you as a person. Seems like if you think something is bad about a nexus something is wrong with you and a lot you guys attack people who are actually in touch with reality.
Apple does not give a hot damn about a nexus and it laughable to think the number 1 phone maker on the planet is worried about us. The fact that some think they have a hidden smear campaign is just nuts.
The nexus 4 is an awesome phone but it has some flaws like everything else. You can lie to yourself to make your purchase feel better but facts are facts. Here are some of the negatives so people thinking of buying this phone can now what is true and to expect.
1. This phone is very fragile ( more than any other phone I owned ). Its glass front and back so expect to own a case and screen protectors. If this phone is gorilla glass its the crappiest I have ever seen or the weakest. All these guys saying they drop there phones and not even a mark, come on. Common sense you can look at this phone and tell any hard floor and a drop over 1 foot something is getting marked or cracked.
2. After you crack the front the screen stops working and the phone is pretty much junk might as well buy a new one. This is not an iPhone so replacement parts will be hard to find and cost will be high. I can crack an iPhone and for 30-40 bucks fix it myself. Good luck on this its the same as the nexus 7. Once cracked it is pretty much worthless.
3. Phone does get pretty warm if the screen is on for about 20 min even on auto brightness. I know its a thin phone but even with a case its hot in the back.
4. Screen colors are washed and LCD is not great. Not saying its bad but its not winning any awards. Put this next almost any other top phone and you will see why people say its washed. Yes you can adjust but you have to root and flash custom and a custom kernel for best results. Then its a little better but it will always be an LCD can't change that. Viewing angles no good and blacks are not deep blacks.
5. Battery life is just ok, some may even say bad. I am on custom ROMs so its a little better but around 4 hours on screen time on average.
There are a few other minor things but for the most part these are the flaws. I still suggest this phone because its cheap, its unlocked, super fast, stock android, and its sleek and sexy. I am not a troll spent over 2 grand ordering nexus 4's, probably donated hundreds of dollars to devs.
Post what you think the negatives are of this phone.

And your stock right? I mean depending what you customize you can get 5 hours but a screen shot would help of proof. And the LCD I'm not saying is bad just not amazing. Its sharp but when I look at an amoled I start missing it again.
Yeah I didn't want to name the minor stuff, lots of people don't even know what USB otg is, could said lack of storage, yellow tint, no LTE, etc.
Main flaw is the whole scratch easy and breaks easy and don't break the front glass or it stops working. Has anyone found out why the nexus 7 and 4 have this problem. I am guessing its somewhere along the line of this how they got the cost down so much. After breaking a nexus 7 on carpet I kinda want Google to make the devices better builds or release some cheap parts to fix them.

Not too sure about the N7, but the N4 uses zero gap technology. I don't really remember the details but it's something along the lines of removing a layer from between the screen and digitizer so they can have a screen without a bezel.

when I got my nexus 4, I couldnt wait for it to come and try it out. i was coming from an htc one x. and no way in the world does the nexus 4 screen come close to the htc one x's. and my nexus 4 started having random shutoffs, heated up, battery was draining faster than i could charge. and the camera sucks on this phone. I got myself a note 2 its a solid device and I do miss the pure google experience, but tbh LG effed it up.
My biggest complaints:
-battery life is atrocious compared to my previous devices
-volume rocker gets hit a lot when pushing wake button one-handed
-google support, I feel like I was somewhat suckered into purchasing by having a Qi charging orb, miracast accessories, and the bumper dangled in front of me only to have them nonexistent, sold out and/or just plain silent when it comes to answers regarding future availability
-the flash on the camera needs to be toned down
-audio is pretty muffled when using speakerphone and phone is laying on it's back, thanks to speaker location
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I also have to disagree with the last three points
My phone only gets warm with intense CPU stuff (which is expected...)
I love the colors, and I can easily manipulate them to give richer, deeper colors through kernels and what not of I grow unhappy later
Battery for me is really good... 4+ screen in 18+ hours... On 3G with WiFi its 6+ in 20+

@Fataldesaign what's the matter with you??
You've started at least 8 anti-nexus 4 thread in this forum, most of them which for locked. All of your thread are something negative.
I remember you ate the same guy from that thread where you started calling everyone your hater and all ... There's no need to start so many thread on the flaws of Nexus 4. One or two is OK.
Thread reported. Kindly do not make useless threads now.
I don't understand why people come in some phone's forum, and make a thread "faults of this phone". I mean, if you don't like this phone, at least don't turn those who spent money in getting the device against it? It may have its flaws, but we are OK with them. We don't need reminders about the bad things. I mean, constructive criticism is GOOD. But not pointless pointing out of flaws...
If you have complaints, kindly submit an error report to Google.
Hope you get my point.

At first I thought the nexus 4 sucked, I don't know why, but now I use it the most
Once you calibrate the display, there are no negatives
Its hard to get dirty (HTC ones back white strips get dirty/stained)
Its as fast as the HTC one, HTC may be a fraction faster opening apps (transition/animation speeds in account)
I only listen to a select few songs, the other 1000 or so are on Google music if I ever want to listen to them
Its a fantastic display, corner edge viewing angles could be better, 1080p appears smoother and better reading in bed, but the display is too long, I prefer the wider but shorter nexus 4/optimus g. Better for browsing
The camera is really good, despite what people say, I took pictures with my s3, xperia s, HTC one xl, nexus 4, HTC one, its hard to differentiate between the phones. HTC one probably stomps in low light.
At first i thought the speaker sucked, admittedly not as loud and clear as the optimus g, its pretty good and loud, boomsound sounds epic, but its not loud, the optimus g is the loudest clearest speaker i have ever heard (just sayin) the lumia 620 has the loudest but its not very good
All the apps run better, even vs the google edition roms. Like Next browser, its silky smooth on the nexus 4 but jittery on the htc one :/
What can I say, I love this phone. And onscreen buttons are badass, makes the 4.7 inch display easier to use + feels faster then capacitive buttons
Calling the camera "really good" on the Nexus 4 really puts everything you say in question. The camera is the biggest failing of the Nexus 4.
I also thinks the camera is alright, I don't ask for crazy camera thou.
Its a Picture i look at a couplepr seconds and then Swype to the next. It's a phone
Skickat från min Nexus 4 med Tapatalk 4 Beta
About the camera, the picture clarity is better than my friends s3 when I compared after zooming to Max
However I prefer his s3 image quality for more natural colours in it
If you are speaking about speaker loudness, try xperia live with Walkman
And about this post, if u post it in nexus 4 forums, most people who have used or are using nexus 4 will say that its okay
If u post it in HTC one forums, most of them will say you are crazy
Its your choice to choose!

I think you're overreacting a bit. I haven't noticed anybody "crying" here. It's been merely one critical post. Everybody is entitled to his/her own opinion. You don't like it, ignore it. After all that's a discussion board and not a st. nexus temple. People don't have to worship every single part of the phone to use it.
Anyway my opinion is IF you really want a smartphone with top notch camera don't buy nexus. When I bought nexus I expected to get much worse cam to be honest, and I was positively surprised. You can really take some good pics with our camera.

The screen looks completely washed out! I did some searches and found that the only way to get more vibrant colors is to root and adjust using another app which is a poor solution. Is this really the only thing that can be done?

Stock 4.3 has better calibrations than 4.2. But if you wanna change LCD calibrations, you need custom kernels (yes after rooting) like faux, ak, Franco etc and then use an app like trickster mod or faux control etc.. Also s4 is amoled so it'll have more vibrant colors..but with custom kernels you can do a lot to the screen

Speaking objectively as an owner of both phones I definitely can. Same with HTC One S->Nexus 4, One S is noticeable more vibrant with darker tones and richer colors.

I do agree the stock n4 does not have the best color calibration. This is a programing issue and not a screen quality issue.
I'm sorry but I would choose a IPS display over a AMOLED display any day!

Bull****. The only thing i can think of is Whatsapp displaying a popup before initial setup saying they don't support custom roms/root. Rooting shouldn't cause ANY problems if you just root, install Faux/Franco kernel (and their app) and apply gamma settings. If you're paranoid, i think you can set root to be denied for anything else apart from those apps you need to calibrate the gamma and stuff. Oh well.

If you're paranoid, i think you can set root to be denied for anything else apart from those apps you need to calibrate the gamma and stuff. Oh well.

You have no ides what your talking about. Many apps are starting to make their apps not compatible if the device is rooted. As being rooted is a security risk.

The N4 is not washed out. Its the S4 and pretty much every Samsung phone and TV ever, that is way over saturated.

Not true! Rooting uses exploits a.k.a security holes in the OS and it patches it! Rooted device= safer device

Oh very true. I have a set of Su binary and app that allows root to all apps without user knowledge. Sound safe to you? A rooted device does not make it safer.

Continuing with my look at the Nexus 5 here are my thoughts vs the Galaxy S4... coming later this week Nexus 5 vs The One
Feel free to ask any questions would be happy to answer them..
I was really disappointed in Nexus 5 display. They say it uses IPS matrix, but apparently it's a consumer-grade IPS which is crap.
I compare colors of Nexus 5 to a professional monitor from NEC and they are complete off. Whites are just too bright.

Most custom ROMs will have device tunables so you can calibrate your own screen. i wouldn't worry about it.

I would like to ask you to re-title the thread
Versus threads are not allowed on XDA
You should rename your thread to something about "Video Reviews for the Nexus 5" (or whatever)
versus threads get closed, whereas review threads are allowed
Thanks for making this video. I'm jumping off the galaxy bandwagon due to Knox and this confirms I made the right choice
Another great advantage on the nexus 5 is price. About $275 CDN cheaper and that is for twice the amount of GB and includes shipping. Can't forget nexus updates and dev support too

Well, there are many factors there, Firstly, no phone to date has shipped with a factory calibrated colors. Its not just hardware that plays a role there. All displays that go from TV displays to car displays are consumer grade. Special ones will cost up to €20000, like an AMOLED based TV or so.
Whatever, the nexus uses IPS technology. Somebody should compare the displays of Nexus 5 and G2. Maybe LG did spare some more on the N5.
If somebody does, please answer here.

One thing I've noticed after using Nexus 5 for one day is that its built quality is a cheap plastic.
Samsung galaxy S4 has much solid built quality.

Were you drunk when you said nexus 5 speakers are louder and that you had never heard such loud speakers?

They're both plastic really, but I doubt they crack on your pocket unless you completely snapped the phone in half or had something rough/sharp in your pocket with the phone.

Got this for my sister. Already have an S4 myself. After a day, I will still keep the S4. They are both good but i feel a little better with S4.

Yes, they are, but S4 has a metal (or aluminum?) rim around the body so it feels much more solid. Not as iPhone solid but definitely better than Nexus.

As said, it's plastic made to look like aluminium.
However, after using the S4 for the past 5 months I can say it has pretty great build quality (in terms of the actual quality of the build). Yes it's plastic, but it's well put together, robust and without gaps or flexing. So far the N5 seems much the same, it's a different style of plastic, and noticeably lighter but it seems well made.
Ah ok, didn't know that.
Don't you feel that S4 is a bit more solid when you hold it in two hands and type something? Maybe its the weight difference, S4 is a bit heavier.

Heavier yes, but not more solid. Neither of them flex at all, or have any amount of give in them (that you'll notice under normal usage).
I think the S4 might feel a bit nicer because of the extra curves on the side, but that's not really a huge issue. It'll come down to each person, and what they prefer in the hand.
I think its the N5 being a little thicker than the S4. It almost give the N5 a hollow feel with it being really light but still a little chunky. Its the vibration motor compared to the S4 which drives me nuts. The N5s is crap.

I sticking with Samsung S3 for now. Buying new devices every 6 months is getting expensive.
The Galaxy S3 is getting Jelly Bean so Im happy. Maybe Ill get a Nexus 5 for Christmas.
Pros
Gold Performance
Gold Brightness
Cons
Camera
Battery
Colours washed out
Speaker are insane Bad ! Becareful
Below averange Viewing Angeles
Considiring the price we can call the Nexus 5 as a huge fail. Nexus 4 is practical the same only the cpu is better and maybe built quality
My opinion dont buy it and get the g2!
Gotta admit, the speakers blow, pop and distort after volume of 70%.
My viewing angle is pretty decent I say when compared to my S4.
Color is ok. I miss my saturated color from S4.
Very fast!!!!
Just a question, for the menu button, how do i end all? I don't like to swipe one by one off the screen...
OK. Thanks for the productive thread.

Ok thats my opinion but the forum is floaded with fanboys , so im just giving a honest review of an user who is not a fanboy.
But again everyone has different opinion:good:
Also, you say the s4 pro is better than the s800? And to "becareful" of the presumably dangerous speaker?
Please expand upon this logic

I got Nexus 5 today, played with it for sometime and here what I noticed I don't like about it.
I also have Galaxy S4 GE and used S3, S2 before. Never used Nexus phones before.
1. It doesn't come with headphones. oh cmon, how expensive can the cost be to not include them into a package ???
2. IPS display is a very big disappointment. The colors are washed out. Whites are too bright.
Galaxy S4 GE's display is much more better at color accuracy if I compare it to a professional IPS displays from NEC.
3. Screen size is actually smaller due to a presence of google buttons. Galaxy S4 has a bigger usefull surface, because it uses mechanical buttons.
Everything else is cool. KitKat 4.4 is awesome.
Cool story bro. But you're right, the forum is filled with useless posts.
I'll just go ahead and correct the title of this thread for you:
"useless review of nexus 5 grammar fail"

There fair enough, and as I say it's your prerogative, however if you honestly feel that a top end handset at near enough half the price of other top end handsets is a huge fail, I refer you to the aforementioned crack pipe.
Fair enough if you don't like it and won't recommend it, but come on... there's not being a fanboy, and there's making ridiculous statements.
Am I the only one that has not experienced any of the problems people are reporting? Sound is good, even at high volume, colors are not washed out. This phone works great for me. Coming from an s4, I like the nexus 5 a lot more.

Take 4.4 and Samsung OS tweaks out, what do you like about Nexus 5 over S4 specifically ?
Coming from s4 the n5 is much better in the hand feels more durable. Screen is washed out a bit but maybe its more accurate. My cons so far Is the speaker is very poor even for £339 and I think the battery don't last very long compared to my previous device s4. So if lg had fitted a better speaker and bigger battery I'd of give this phone 9/10 as every phone has an improvement to be made. But it is how it is so I'd give it a 7/10
