Continuing with my look at the Nexus 5 here are my thoughts vs the Galaxy S4... coming later this week Nexus 5 vs The One
Feel free to ask any questions would be happy to answer them..
I was really disappointed in Nexus 5 display. They say it uses IPS matrix, but apparently it's a consumer-grade IPS which is crap.
I compare colors of Nexus 5 to a professional monitor from NEC and they are complete off. Whites are just too bright.

Most custom ROMs will have device tunables so you can calibrate your own screen. i wouldn't worry about it.

I would like to ask you to re-title the thread
Versus threads are not allowed on XDA
You should rename your thread to something about "Video Reviews for the Nexus 5" (or whatever)
versus threads get closed, whereas review threads are allowed
Thanks for making this video. I'm jumping off the galaxy bandwagon due to Knox and this confirms I made the right choice
Another great advantage on the nexus 5 is price. About $275 CDN cheaper and that is for twice the amount of GB and includes shipping. Can't forget nexus updates and dev support too

Well, there are many factors there, Firstly, no phone to date has shipped with a factory calibrated colors. Its not just hardware that plays a role there. All displays that go from TV displays to car displays are consumer grade. Special ones will cost up to €20000, like an AMOLED based TV or so.
Whatever, the nexus uses IPS technology. Somebody should compare the displays of Nexus 5 and G2. Maybe LG did spare some more on the N5.
If somebody does, please answer here.

One thing I've noticed after using Nexus 5 for one day is that its built quality is a cheap plastic.
Samsung galaxy S4 has much solid built quality.

They're both plastic really, but I doubt they crack on your pocket unless you completely snapped the phone in half or had something rough/sharp in your pocket with the phone.

Got this for my sister. Already have an S4 myself. After a day, I will still keep the S4. They are both good but i feel a little better with S4.

Yes, they are, but S4 has a metal (or aluminum?) rim around the body so it feels much more solid. Not as iPhone solid but definitely better than Nexus.

As said, it's plastic made to look like aluminium.
However, after using the S4 for the past 5 months I can say it has pretty great build quality (in terms of the actual quality of the build). Yes it's plastic, but it's well put together, robust and without gaps or flexing. So far the N5 seems much the same, it's a different style of plastic, and noticeably lighter but it seems well made.
Ah ok, didn't know that.
Don't you feel that S4 is a bit more solid when you hold it in two hands and type something? Maybe its the weight difference, S4 is a bit heavier.

Heavier yes, but not more solid. Neither of them flex at all, or have any amount of give in them (that you'll notice under normal usage).
I think the S4 might feel a bit nicer because of the extra curves on the side, but that's not really a huge issue. It'll come down to each person, and what they prefer in the hand.
I think its the N5 being a little thicker than the S4. It almost give the N5 a hollow feel with it being really light but still a little chunky. Its the vibration motor compared to the S4 which drives me nuts. The N5s is crap.

I sticking with Samsung S3 for now. Buying new devices every 6 months is getting expensive.
The Galaxy S3 is getting Jelly Bean so Im happy. Maybe Ill get a Nexus 5 for Christmas.

Seems like every time a new nexus seems like in the first three months you can't say anything negative about the phone. It must be better than everything else or bust. Its like the phone you own defines you as a person. Seems like if you think something is bad about a nexus something is wrong with you and a lot you guys attack people who are actually in touch with reality.
Apple does not give a hot damn about a nexus and it laughable to think the number 1 phone maker on the planet is worried about us. The fact that some think they have a hidden smear campaign is just nuts.
The nexus 4 is an awesome phone but it has some flaws like everything else. You can lie to yourself to make your purchase feel better but facts are facts. Here are some of the negatives so people thinking of buying this phone can now what is true and to expect.
1. This phone is very fragile ( more than any other phone I owned ). Its glass front and back so expect to own a case and screen protectors. If this phone is gorilla glass its the crappiest I have ever seen or the weakest. All these guys saying they drop there phones and not even a mark, come on. Common sense you can look at this phone and tell any hard floor and a drop over 1 foot something is getting marked or cracked.
2. After you crack the front the screen stops working and the phone is pretty much junk might as well buy a new one. This is not an iPhone so replacement parts will be hard to find and cost will be high. I can crack an iPhone and for 30-40 bucks fix it myself. Good luck on this its the same as the nexus 7. Once cracked it is pretty much worthless.
3. Phone does get pretty warm if the screen is on for about 20 min even on auto brightness. I know its a thin phone but even with a case its hot in the back.
4. Screen colors are washed and LCD is not great. Not saying its bad but its not winning any awards. Put this next almost any other top phone and you will see why people say its washed. Yes you can adjust but you have to root and flash custom and a custom kernel for best results. Then its a little better but it will always be an LCD can't change that. Viewing angles no good and blacks are not deep blacks.
5. Battery life is just ok, some may even say bad. I am on custom ROMs so its a little better but around 4 hours on screen time on average.
There are a few other minor things but for the most part these are the flaws. I still suggest this phone because its cheap, its unlocked, super fast, stock android, and its sleek and sexy. I am not a troll spent over 2 grand ordering nexus 4's, probably donated hundreds of dollars to devs.
Post what you think the negatives are of this phone.

Sorry I have to disagree.
I have no heating issues, the LCD is far superior than my HTC one x was, and I get consistently over 5 hours screen on time. Unbelievable if you ask me.

And your stock right? I mean depending what you customize you can get 5 hours but a screen shot would help of proof. And the LCD I'm not saying is bad just not amazing. Its sharp but when I look at an amoled I start missing it again.
Yeah I didn't want to name the minor stuff, lots of people don't even know what USB otg is, could said lack of storage, yellow tint, no LTE, etc.
Main flaw is the whole scratch easy and breaks easy and don't break the front glass or it stops working. Has anyone found out why the nexus 7 and 4 have this problem. I am guessing its somewhere along the line of this how they got the cost down so much. After breaking a nexus 7 on carpet I kinda want Google to make the devices better builds or release some cheap parts to fix them.

Not too sure about the N7, but the N4 uses zero gap technology. I don't really remember the details but it's something along the lines of removing a layer from between the screen and digitizer so they can have a screen without a bezel.

when I got my nexus 4, I couldnt wait for it to come and try it out. i was coming from an htc one x. and no way in the world does the nexus 4 screen come close to the htc one x's. and my nexus 4 started having random shutoffs, heated up, battery was draining faster than i could charge. and the camera sucks on this phone. I got myself a note 2 its a solid device and I do miss the pure google experience, but tbh LG effed it up.
My biggest complaints:
-battery life is atrocious compared to my previous devices
-volume rocker gets hit a lot when pushing wake button one-handed
-google support, I feel like I was somewhat suckered into purchasing by having a Qi charging orb, miracast accessories, and the bumper dangled in front of me only to have them nonexistent, sold out and/or just plain silent when it comes to answers regarding future availability
-the flash on the camera needs to be toned down
-audio is pretty muffled when using speakerphone and phone is laying on it's back, thanks to speaker location
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I also have to disagree with the last three points
My phone only gets warm with intense CPU stuff (which is expected...)
I love the colors, and I can easily manipulate them to give richer, deeper colors through kernels and what not of I grow unhappy later
Battery for me is really good... 4+ screen in 18+ hours... On 3G with WiFi its 6+ in 20+

I am not going to discuss the other points but, you are right, the phone is very fragile. Mine suffer a falling from about one meter which cracks the screen. In any case, the replacement by an official client service costs near 150€, transport included, so the complain about the components cost its not fair.

@Fataldesaign what's the matter with you??
You've started at least 8 anti-nexus 4 thread in this forum, most of them which for locked. All of your thread are something negative.
I remember you ate the same guy from that thread where you started calling everyone your hater and all ... There's no need to start so many thread on the flaws of Nexus 4. One or two is OK.
Thread reported. Kindly do not make useless threads now.
I don't understand why people come in some phone's forum, and make a thread "faults of this phone". I mean, if you don't like this phone, at least don't turn those who spent money in getting the device against it? It may have its flaws, but we are OK with them. We don't need reminders about the bad things. I mean, constructive criticism is GOOD. But not pointless pointing out of flaws...
If you have complaints, kindly submit an error report to Google.
Hope you get my point.

I'm really not understanding why so many people dislike the Nexus 4. Is it due to the terrible launch? And why keep comparing it to the Galaxy S3? Vanilla Android and Touchwiz both have their ups and downs. Lack of LTE really shouldnt be an issue unless you are on Verizon. For $350 (including tax of course ) you get a phone with a quadcore processor,Adreno 320 GPU, fully unlocked, and timely updates. Not to mention the amount of money you wiuld save getting a prepaid service no contract.
Sorry if I made a few mistakes. This is my first post in this forum and just received my Nexus 4. Any advice would be helpful for future threads.

I don't know, people like to nitpick. My problem with the Nexus 4 is the same as the Galaxy Nexus I previously owned, its never 100% perfect, even after an RMA, there is still a bit of black light bleeding, a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, my wireless charging orb stopped working, had to RMA that, and so on, the Nexus line to me has always had some flaws in terms of hardware reliability.
That being said, the Nexus 4 is among the most beautiful phones, up there with the high end Xperia phones, and with amazing hardware, so asides from the hardware imperfections that one might encounter if unlucky, its a great phone.
I cannot think of a single phone other than the new Xperia (if aosp) that is coming out that I would trade my Nexus 4 for.

you just might be right sir. This is actually my first nexus device. I honestly was really close in getting the S3 until I saw this technological beauty being demoed at a local T-Mobile store. I swear I heard the phone calling my name lol. I immediately forgot all about the S3 and purchased the N4 full price.

Well maybe not a backlash, but numerous threads and forums bash the nexus 4 as if Google completely messed up the device. Lack of LTE, lack of storage, glass back (guess they forgot about the "rave" reviews about iPhone 4 hardware), phone isn't thin enough, etc. CNET gave the phone a 3.5 out of 5 while S3 got a 4 out of 5. They gave the Galaxy Nexus a 5 out of 5 and the N4 is a complete upgrade! So a removable battery on Galaxy Nexus makes it perfect?

Don't pay attention to ***** ratings.. Nothing but a popularity contest.. Read the conclusions and see if the `cons' are anything you deem a problem. They focused on lack of LTE which is a legit gripe no matter how you spin it and how well HSPA+ works.. It is a technology that is sort expected now a days. But.. Unless it personally affects you.. Then it doesn't matter..
They also focused on calling it "uninspiring" "not expanding the Nexus brand".. That's when I stop taking them seriously.. When reviewers start getting all Martha Stewart on you.. It's time to stop reading.
It is just not flawless: back glass, which can crack in any day, noise from earpiece, non-vibrant screen - these spoil impression from the phone. It is my first nexus devise (I had xperia Ion before it) and I expected much more from it. I still haven't decided which one to sell - Nexus or Ion. Ion is flawless except that hardware quite old.
And that's what makes the difference between the nexus 4 and everything else. It will constantly get updates before any other phone. I can totally understand the glass back being fragile.

I'm not trying to sound like a fanboy with this being my first nexus device. But honestly where else are you going to find an unlocked top tier phone with high end specs for $300. Put in perspective, a galaxy note 2 costs $299 with a two year contract. That's not even the full price of actual phone which is over $600. Over $600 for a phone that may or may not get Key Lime Pie. The nexus is guaranteed to get it and faster than anybody else.

For me it doesn't matter how much it costs - I could buy iphone 5, but I don't like iOS. Price is just a good bonus. Having top hardware specs is good, but will not you feel disappointed if your back glass is cracked? And this state of waiting and checking if it is cracked or not... I hate being in situation like this. Maybe in some time I will stop thinking of this. Will not you be disappointed if you had another device with worse specs, but with so much better display?
That's a good question...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I'm not saying cost should be a factor, but rather value. Look at what u get for such a low cost. I can understand the glass back being an issue. But I'd rather have the back shatter then the display itself. Luckily I have a case. Either way I would be disappointed. But which would really tick u off, shattering a phone $700 or shattering a phone $300?

I'm not sure as of yet. From what I've read it hasnt been that much of an issue unless you're doing extreme multitasking. So far Ive played Need for Speed Most Wanted while listening to music and it hasnt shut down yet. It does heat up though but not bad enough to shut the entire phone down.

I spent 475$ for 16 GB version - that is its price in the UK. And i spent about 100$ for different accessories for it (skins, cases, etc). Maybe if lived in US and bought it for 300 I would have a different opinion
Pros
Gold Performance
Gold Brightness
Cons
Camera
Battery
Colours washed out
Speaker are insane Bad ! Becareful

Considiring the price we can call the Nexus 5 as a huge fail. Nexus 4 is practical the same only the cpu is better and maybe built quality
My opinion dont buy it and get the g2!
Gotta admit, the speakers blow, pop and distort after volume of 70%.
My viewing angle is pretty decent I say when compared to my S4.
Color is ok. I miss my saturated color from S4.
Very fast!!!!

I got Nexus 5 today, played with it for sometime and here what I noticed I don't like about it.
I also have Galaxy S4 GE and used S3, S2 before. Never used Nexus phones before.
1. It doesn't come with headphones. oh cmon, how expensive can the cost be to not include them into a package ???
2. IPS display is a very big disappointment. The colors are washed out. Whites are too bright.
Galaxy S4 GE's display is much more better at color accuracy if I compare it to a professional IPS displays from NEC.
3. Screen size is actually smaller due to a presence of google buttons. Galaxy S4 has a bigger usefull surface, because it uses mechanical buttons.
Everything else is cool. KitKat 4.4 is awesome.
Cool story bro. But you're right, the forum is filled with useless posts.

There fair enough, and as I say it's your prerogative, however if you honestly feel that a top end handset at near enough half the price of other top end handsets is a huge fail, I refer you to the aforementioned crack pipe.
Fair enough if you don't like it and won't recommend it, but come on... there's not being a fanboy, and there's making ridiculous statements.
Am I the only one that has not experienced any of the problems people are reporting? Sound is good, even at high volume, colors are not washed out. This phone works great for me. Coming from an s4, I like the nexus 5 a lot more.

Take 4.4 and Samsung OS tweaks out, what do you like about Nexus 5 over S4 specifically ?
Coming from s4 the n5 is much better in the hand feels more durable. Screen is washed out a bit but maybe its more accurate. My cons so far Is the speaker is very poor even for £339 and I think the battery don't last very long compared to my previous device s4. So if lg had fitted a better speaker and bigger battery I'd of give this phone 9/10 as every phone has an improvement to be made. But it is how it is so I'd give it a 7/10

Hey people. So I've been inactive for quite awhile. I used to be lurking at the Xperia Z and HTC One section. In the past year I've used tons of flagships. Starting with the Xperia Z from the iPhone 5. Soon I moved to the HTC One. Not long after, I moved to the iPhone 5s. Recently, I managed to snag myself a Nexus 5. Been using it for awhile so I'd thought its time to clean the dust off this account and be active again.
Here's my honest fanboy-free review of the Google Nexus 5. I've used various brands of phones for the past year so I hope that I can share my experiences of the Nexus 5 compared to the others.
Nexus 5 Review
The Nexus 5 is a "cheap" phone. For $349 off contract for the 16GB version, it's quite the steal. Not to mention the flagship specs! What more can we ask for a device priced this affordable?
Build Quality
Phenomenal. Call me low standard, but I think the build is great, at least for the black one. Sure, it's no HTC One or iPhone 5s, but the soft touch back feels awesome. Period. It feels great in the hand and is kinda resistant to scratches. Mine looks mint even after so much use! The build is great; it doesn't flex, and is sturdy. Did I mention how nice the soft touch back feels? It does catches fingerprints and oils from your hands though. But just wiping it off with your fingers will make it look new again.
Power Hungry
The Nexus 5 is full of power. With a Snapdragon 800, 2GB of RAM and the Adreno 330, it will take anything I throw at it. The only issue I had with performance is Real Racing 3. I have the occasional frame-rate drop on that game but other that, it runs like butter.
The UI is smooth with no lag, multitasking is a breeze. There's really nothing else I can ask for.
Pure Google
The Nexus 5 comes with the latest and greatest of Android, 4.4 KitKat. As of this review, there has been 2 updates to far to bring it up to 4.4.2.
The Nexus 5 also comes with the latest Google Now Launcher, and I love it. I've never used Google Now before as it was too much an hassle for me to swipe up to open it. Now as it's fully integrated into the launcher, I find myself using it. A lot.
The "Okay Google" hotword detection is beyond cool. I like showing it off to my friends and they all think its cool. Some people find it a waste of battery. For me, I use it a lot as I'm a student who relies too much on Google. Being able to do Google searches when eating and not getting the sauce all over the phone is useful to me.
As for hangouts being the default SMS app, I think it's a matter of personal opinion. I find it okay. Anyway, it's android! The default messaging app can be changed easily.
Sure, icons are huge. What's the big deal with that?
Eye-opening Screen
The screen is absolutely fantastic. Colors are accurate and the screen is super sharp.
It's great for watching videos and for reading books on. The screen looks like its popping out at times! In fact, I'll go as far as to call it the best screen on a smartphone. Period.
Camera
Meh. Camera quality is okay. Nothing fantastic but it does the job. I find it better than the HTC One in terms of sharpness but in low light, its just no good.
If you are looking for the best camera in a smartphone, stay away.
Speakers
Simply put, its not good. The sound quality is just not good. Sure, its no BoomSound, but still. Its not the best, but it does its job well.
Oh well, for a $350 smartphone with monstrous specs, there's bound to be compromises. I guess the speakers is one of them.
(Edit)I came from the HTC One and therefore my expectations for speakers in smartphones may have increased greatly. I think that the speakers on the Nexus 5 is sufficient, but can be better. Just my 2 cents
Battery Life
At first, it was not good. I had to bring my portable charger everywhere I went. But over time, it has improved. I now can get 6 hours on screen time! I know, crazy right? I guess I had to "break" in the battery.
Call Quality
The earphone used for calls is great, I can hear the other party clearly and they can hear me clearly.
Bottom Line
Is it worth it? Yes. Should you get it? Hell Yes. For the price, its really, really worth it! Furthermore it's from Google; guaranteed updates for the next 2 or so years. It runs great, it's smooth and I really like the Google Now Launcher. I'd choose this phone over the iPhone 5s or any other phones!
This phone really is the best android phone yet.
P.S. Please give me feedback on my review! Please correct me if there's any error! Thanks for taking the time to read this!
I think there's nothing wrong with the speakers. I don't think they're bad or anything. I went from a Note 2 to Nexus 5 and I barely notice the difference between speakers. Sure it's no HTC One-quality speakers but they work fine.
A fantastic review I must say!
Cheers mate!
Good review and you are right with all points. It's really the best Android phone.

Yes, I agree, they work fine. But maybe I'm used too high quality speakers so they sound kind of crappy to me. Its not fantastic, but they do the job well.

Great review, came from a S4 and love this phone in comparison. Pure android is the best and have had no desire thus far to load a custom ROM.
Agree with all your points but the speaker quality, its not the best but not horrible at all.
Very happy with the phone overall.

Yes I agree. Maybe I didn't say it right. Its not good, but it still gets the job done. Maybe its because
I came from the HTC One and that probably raised my expectations for speaker quality. I have edited my original post to reflect that.

I think it depends when you bought it. Didn't they drill bigger holes for the speaker in later revisions? I know I got a day 1 order and the speakerphone is awful.

Good review. I find the speaker works just fine. It's leaps and bounds better than the one on the GNex anyways (has a much fuller sound)

Yep. Speaker works fine. I don't have the GNex so I can't say that much but compared to the iPhone 5s which I'm using as a companion to the Nexus 5, the speakers on the Nexus 5 truly is lacking.

I gotta say I have the EXACT same sentiments as you when it comes to this phone.
I gotta say the speaker location is awesome, but the speaker itself is lacking.
Atleast it wasn't placed on the rear.
Camera is good enough to capture moments. Nothing to brag about.
Other than that, everything else is awesome.
My previous phones are Note 2, Moto G, Nexus 4 , Optimus G, iPhone 5, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Nexus, Captivate, and S2

Reviews are subjective so there isnt really any scope for error.
Please don't take this the wrong way but there are loads of reviews here and although yours may be the most comprehensive, because they're subjective - it doesn't really offer much. Take 10 reviews, all 10 may agree on 1 point and disagree on another....

Guess it depends what last phone you had but the speaker destroys my old phone. I'd say both the speaker and headphone audio quality are superior to the average laptop as well. Compares favorably to my $900 Lenovo anyways.

Great review! I purchased my nexus 5 black from swappa for $365 32gb in good condition. I gotta say I also love the feel of the soft black skin. Its great and I totally I agree with you, however I managed to put a very minor scratch dent on the back with only having it 3 days lol. Wish I could have this phone caseless but I feel like I would beat it up due to my aggressive lifestyle. Anyway good review and I also love the phone so far.

Once you get your hands on a GS5, post your first impressions here for everyone to discuss.
Select Best Buys now have demo units available to play with, so I went and got my hands on one today.
First of all, they only had them in white, and the white version doesn't feel good at all. The back looks like it would have a soft texture, but it's hard slippery plastic.
The new version of TouchWiz definitely looks better, but it still seems very cluttered to me.
It doesn't feel as smooth and fast as my stock Nexus 5 running ART, but it's almost as performant as a Nexus 5 running Dalvik. TouchWiz is obviously still heavy because it should really be faster than the Nexus 5 with that Snapdragon 801.
ART is not available. I tried to enable it to see if it would make it as fast as my Nexus 5, but the option has been removed by Samsung.
Can't say much about the camera because it's hard to judge pictures of the inside of Best Buy. It did focus and capture fast though.
That's all for now. Will update as I think of more.

Maybe that was early software and now it's been removed. Or maybe only the Korean and international models will have it. It definitely wasn't there on the one I played with.
Here's a picture I took. No ART.

Oh ART Runtime... It's such a joy walking into a store to stutter around on the latest and greatest of LG, Samsung, Sony, HTC, Huawei etc., then pull out my Nexus 4/ART and bring a big smile on my face. The S5 should be pretty snappy on ART.

If it performs almost like a nexus 5 on dalvik that's EXCELLENT news. Touchwiz is heavy so that's really great.

My first impression on the S5 is very awesome ! The design is very nice. The waterproof and Anti-dust functions are amazing, it protect the phone very well. But the back cover is leather, i don't like the ugly back cover design.

But is TW really that heavy? After using both TW and Google Play editon ROMs in my GS4, the RAM usage difference after booting is less than 300MB (~750MB vs. ~1GB) with the same setup.

I don't normally like white phones but I find the love the dots on the face of the white version:
Reminds me of an old flame:
Will decide when I get to go hands on with all colors within this week.
I went to try the S5 out today at the Best Buy. It figures, I have 4 or 5 stores in my area, and the S5 is only at the one that is the furthest away (25 mile drive).
I have to say, I was pretty impressed with the phone. Build quality seems typical of recent Samsung fare. Navigating through the UI was smooth and peppy. Unfortunately I didn't have too much of a chance to dig deeper -- I had a Samsung rep and a Best Buy salesperson hovering over me to explain all the features I already knew about. Plus a line of interested onlookers was forming, so I let the next person look at it.
Best Buy has a preorder promo to get a $10 gift card. Not the greatest perk, but any money saved is fine with me. So I went for it.
The S5 is a really good phone. I played with it for a bit today and I predict that there are going to be a lot of surprised people out there. I think this is probably the best Samsung phone ever. Fast and responsive pretty much sums it up.
So how does the Ugly back cover looks in real? As horrible as we have seen in reviews?

No, the phone looks and feels much different in person. It really feels great and the cover has good grip and feel. I didn't really like the looks when i saw the pictures, but holding one and looking at it is totally different. I might actually get one.
It also feels way smoother then S4. No S Lag at all and the camera is very fast.
