Hey guys,
I have a galaxy Nexus on Verizon. My girl friend HAD an HTC Vivid on AT&T.
Her phone recently broke and she needs a replacement. We don't have much money, so I started looking on ebay for some cheap phones on AT&T that I could get her. Originally I would have liked to get her some kind of Nexus phone, but they are all expensive.
I noticed the Galaxy S captivate is widely available on ebay, and it can be purchased for around half the price of the galaxy s 2. It seems to be around $70 on ebay.
I was considering buying this phone and putting CM10.1 on it.
Considering the price and performance of this phone, does this sound like a good idea? Will my GF be happy with it? I don't think she will miss not having 4G.
Thanks.
I've been running 10.1 nightlies with no problem for the last month.
You might just install the monthly M build on it.
The captivate is an awesome phone. I have a gs3 and my old captivate will do almost anything that my gs3 will grant it the gs3 is a lot faster at it. Development is awesome for the captivate too. Don't think you could go wrong with the cappy. I was running 4.2 aosp before my upgrade and it ran great.

I purchased one with a slightly cracked screen for forty bucks on ebay. It seemed like a good deal. I'm trying to find a cheap replacement digitizer. I have successfully replaced a few screens with no damage to the phone/laptop/tablet, but each smartphone is different so I hope it isn't too hard to fix the captivates.
I'm looking forward to putting a rom on it. My only concern for my GF is if she will really miss the lack of an LED on the back to use as a flash light. I wasn't aware of that missing.

If you want a reliable phone with great development this far into the life of the device than do yourself a favor and grab a Capdaddy. I've had mine since its release and I am not looking to upgrade anytime soon.
Great Value for money.

Apart from Battery Backup Front Cam and LED Flash this phone has everything with Strong body panel.
I am running CM 10.1 and it is working lag free.

I get that it has no front cam or LED flash, but what do you mean by battery backup?
And I am excited for it to arrive so I can start tinkering with it and give it to her.
Go for the Samsung Captivate Glide

If I were you i would consider a newer phone. While i love my 2.5 yo cappy, and have ported and polished the heads... er I mean rooted rommed, upgraded and inverted it, its still is a 3 year old phone. Att has free phones (with year contract) like the Samsung Captivate Glide, with 8 meg camera, dual core CPU, slide out keyboard and front facing camera. Not sure how hack able it is, but if it is a SG captivate at heart things should work fine.

For 4 g try the GS II
I cannot post the link, but search att.
It is also .99 cents.
AND No I do not work for or even like Atnt.
I think it goes without saying that we are locked into a contract and are unable to take advantage of the subsidized phones.

edit: things aren't going so well. I wish I knew it had so many GPS issues. Mine has busted usb pins -.-
Busted usb pins sucks. Was it $40 functioning as is? When $70 on eBay or craigslist you usually get a good deal. You can try yer hand at soldering and get a new port for about $5 or send it to be fixed for about $30-$40. By battery they meant its almost three years old so the battery is not the best. You can get some slim extended batteries really cheap or any battery that works for the Sprint GS2 Epic Touch 4G, but not the other S2's. All in all its a great phone though. Hellybean and Captivating "newest m2 build seems to be a little buggies for most" 4.2 ROMS are running amazing on it. I've heard great on slimbean too. 4.2 is the best my Cappy has been yet.

I am currently running a Vivid (Raider here in Canada) as my daily driver and I love it as she probably did as well.
The actual usability will be very similar to your nexus as cm10.1 is very vanilla user experience. As long as she doesn't need too much power it will be a great phone. The size, weight and screen are the reason I bought one again.
If you are not familiar with running custom roms, it will be a little bit buggy, but mine hasn't had any problems so far. Great phone and $70 is a reasonable price. (I got my first for $60 brand new and second for $20 barely used from a friend)
Keep in mind you can buy ANY android phone and unlock it quickly and for free or little cost.:good:

So I recently purchased a Captivate, what got me to buy it was how it DID NOT look like an Iphone. The vibrant just looks like an Iphone(although I've been eying it for a while since I live in Canada and Bell offered the one with the front facing camera, is it really that useful?).
I'm just curious on what got you guys to choose the Captivate.
Cause the AT&T nexus one is hard to find for under 500 bucks lol
But honestly the 4 inch screen and cause its the only android handset with a bright future on at&t and i hate iphones with a passion

always nice to hear from people like me who hate 'iphone with passion' good one !!1!! I just pity on the idiots who praise iphone in front of me after seeing my captivate
I could have gone with either T-Mob or AT&T the deciding factor for me was the Amazon deal on the Cappy for a penny. 1 Penny VS 100 dollars. was easy decision.
FAN + high end android phone
Also, it looks the best (the carbon fiber back matches my bike ).
I have to agree with both statements of both the iphone look of the vibrant and the absolute disgust of the iphone itself. I've already converted some ppl to android and completely shamed some iphone 4 owners with the amazing captivate. And when ppl see my phone they know its not an idumb unlike my friend who owns a vibrant. She has the hardest time having vibrant in plain site and ppl asking if its the new iphone.

I upgraded to this from a Samsung Impression. I loved my Impression. I never had any issues with it like others had described. It had the same AMOLED screen technology, and amazing battery life. Any Samsung I've owned, whether it's been a phone or a camera has been great. So they've earned my business. They didn't disappoint me this time either with my Captivate. It's fast, it's light, it does great on battery life (I can go a day and a half without a full charge unlike I could with my Samsung Blackjack) and the screen is bright and vibrant just like I expected.
impression had a amoled screen? didn't know that but anyways well the 16 GB internal storage is one reason the other is that i couldn't switch to T-Mo
im not leaving AT&T, i had an upgrade available and its the first high end android device they offered. plus i was getting tired of how blackberry was so behind with everything.

Ya learn something new everyday.
i was tired of my bb's outdated operation.. was considering an iphone.. but this phone came HIGHLY reccomended from an executive at ATT that i know well... and referred to this phone as the "iphone killer"... love it so far.
My friend had the Vibrant on T-mo and told me, "Yknow, AT&T is getting basically the same phone, it's called the Captivate." My contract came up for renewal and they offered me the phone for $99. I couldn't say no. I like the idea of a phone running an open source operating system that anyone can tinker with. I've never liked Apple and their iOS with all of their restrictions.
I was actually contemplating making the move to T-mobile as they have cheaper plans and the service is about the same as AT&T in my area. Still, after holding both phones, the build quality and the overall look of the phone was much better with the Captivate IMO, so I decided to stick with AT&T for now and picked one up.
I am now waiting on the G2 and whatever the Emerald turns out to be for T-mobile this fall and may make the jump at that point.
I'm actually not enthralled with the overall look of the Captivate, but that's probably because I came from the Pure, and could see how AT&T has been influencing the design of these phones, and not necessarily for the better. I've attached a picture that shows what I mean better. If I removed the branding, you might have a hard time telling which phone is which.
But I did buy a Captivate, but only because I got ~$300 off from AT&T, T-mobile gets horrible reception both where I live and work, and I knew before I bought it that I would be able to undo the vast majority of AT&T's raping of this otherwise amazing phone.
had my Cappy out charging in Starbucks the other day and overheard the two people next to us chatting about it to each other:
"hey, what phone is that over there?"
"looks like the Xperia X10"
had to laugh at myself and told em its a Captivate and its not released here in Canada yet
To all who were tired of the bb.
I just came from a Bold 9000. Blackberry isn't really much outdated it's just really more lenient on business.
Tbh, I miss some things on my bb like keyboard shortcuts, the keyboard in general lol, bbm(reasons not sure why), and the ease of jumping around for me.
The reason why I jumped ship to the captivate is because it's the best android phone for AT&T and that's where I have a family plan :T lol I would have taken Sprint Epic if I could but I'm on AT&T!
^ I find bbm silly. Anyone who has a blackberry says they love it and I ask them why, the answer is always bbm. I say why is that better than text? They always try to come up with a reason. some of them know bbm transfers files. I say I have google talk and a vast array of other Im apps. They always say but bbm is blackberry only as if that's a good thing. I can talk to any one with a computer or iphone or android or whatever on there existing aim our yahoo account and they can only talk to there friends with blackberries, seems snobbish to me. You might say google talk can't send files, but yahoo messenger can.

I got it on Friday from Target $149.00, activated it and it is great. Great phone a huge upgrade from my Samsung Intercept.
I agree.. Just picked one up yesterday and it blows the intercept out of the water!! What a joke that phone was.. And $100 more? You gotta be joking me Get the LG!
Yeah I just got one from Target. If you don't see one give the DPCI for it because it doesn't show up on the system otherwise.
Very nice and inexpensive. I was thinking about the Intercept before I heard of this because it was $170 at Best Buy. Based on what I read this is the better buy, even for someone like me who NEEDS a physical keyboard. Gotta break out of the comfort zone if you want the bread, eh
I just got mine today. Have the $25 dollar package and love it. Left Cricket's unreliable network where I was using a flashed HTC Eris. Couldn't get 3G no matter what tutorials I followed on this and other forums. I'm really glad I made that change.
I made the switch from an AT&T Captivate. Fed up with paying 130.00+ monthly for bad coverage and a phone that will never see froyo. Porting took less than 2 hours and I have working NAV! I was a little apprehensive about switching to pre-pay, but so far the coverage has been 110% better, and the VM reps are great! I didn't sit on hold even once in the 4 calls I made to them after buying the phone. If you are on the fence about buying this phone, please allow me to nudge you in the right direction!
Just got one at Best Buy last weekend for $129. Great phone. Love the dedicated camera button. Coming from an Evo this things screen is small but the phone is still quick and is the perfect for factor for pocket-ability.
In the midst of fighting with verizon over getting a working revo i jumped ship and bought a Moto RAZR on craigstlist for cheap. I appreciate all the help y'all have given over the last year and how hard everyone(especially mtmichaelson) has fought to make the revo a damn good phone. Thanks again guys, and good luck on keeping the revo at least moderately caught up in the wake of all the new JB and ICS phones on the market!

Micro is a completely different size and card. You would have to contact Verizon. You can go into a corporate store also. They have extras they can activate for you. Last I knew they were free with a sales pitch for an add a line our upgrade lol.

Thanks for your answer but are you sure about the card? I've read that as long as you keep the circuitry and contact points intact cutting a sim down to a micro sim will still function. Or is there yet another kind of card I'm getting this confused with?

I did the same thing. Picked up a galaxy nexus off of craigslist for pretty cheap. After owning the original droid I'm happy to be back to vanilla android (ICS this time). My revo had become way to slow for my liking, even with mtmichaelson's rom (which made it way better than stock).
I destroyed verizon. Revo out. Samsung Galaxy S3 to replace. for free.
This is my wife's phone and we've had it for about 6-7 months. I rooted it, ROM'd it (1st Gingervolt, then Broken Out). I'm on the latest firmware update, and again rooted and flashed Broken Out. All throughout, there were issues with bluetooth, Vibe of Death, screen freezes.
I complained just the other day - hey it was Sunday on Labor Day weekend and I had a moment. 1st Verizon rep was willing to send a replacement Revo. I told her that was unacceptable, that all the forums I've read detail that the defects I've cited are baked into the phone, it is a lemon and should be recalled and that sending me the same lemony phone was unacceptable. I urged her to elevate my claim. I was insistent and was really quite angry that she was not getting it.
I then spoke with a really great rep - technical support - to whom I mentioned all I had done (except for rooting and flashing a rom) and truthfully told her that I had upgraded to latest firmware and still had screen freezes and bluetooth problems. I told her about what I read on the forums and how the phone is just fatally flawed. I also mentioned 20 years as a Verizon cell phone customer, my family plan with 5 phones, all with data, and that what I was asking for - a different model replacement phone - was neither outrageous nor unexpected.
She asked what phone would I prefer. I first said a Razr, but said the Galaxy S3 would be great, but I doubt they'd substitute. Without a moment of delay, she said I could have the Galaxy S3 and what color, blue or white... It was shipped immediately and we are awaiting it.
So pretty soon, on ebay, you are going to see our used LG Revolution...
The moral of this story is get past the first level of customer support and stand your ground. insist on a replacement. Tell them that the Revolution is a huge disappointment and does not provide the basic functions a phone should.
Man...i wish my experience with trying to get different phones was better... I did the same thing, insisted that i would rather go to another service than get a revo back... They didnt give a rats ass... The only reason i'm still with verizon is due to the razr i found for dirt cheap. ICS is so nice in comparison!

This phone was obsolete when it was released honestly. The Droid Charge came out before it and was a better phone for the most part. The only reason I bought it was for the unlocked bootloader but I guess none of the Android developers did because we only had limited development (not a knock against the people who did develop, but for all the developers who complained about locked bootloaders and then didn't jump on one that was unlocked)

How is the Nexus 4 on AT&T? do you get HSPA? or is it strictly 2g/EDGE?
Yeah I get hspa+, usually 6-12mb, it's not bad at all. Just make sure they don't mess with your plan and put the apn in from your vivid, otherwise you'll get stuck on the regular 3G plan. At&t did that to my wife.
Actually it was a big mess. I got mine in January, and I needed a micro sim. I went to the store, and the manager ended up taking care of me, and she gave me a micro sim, didn't mess with my account, and I was on my way. Well when my wife got hers in march, same thing went in there for a micro sim, but got a regular employee this time. When we got back her data wouldn't work at all! So I checked the account, and for whatever reason the idiot deleted her data plan all together! So I call at&t and get it back but they put her on the regular 3G plan for smartphones and the Vivid apn wouldn't even connect! Finally I talked to an employee on live chat the next day and got them to put her back on the lte plan!
So make sure they don't tamper with your account! Either that or get a sim cutter and try it out!

I've been thinking about getting either the Nexus 4 or the LG optimus G. Basically the same phone, I have another year on my contract but the Vivid is quickly dying out. After that I will probably jump to Tmobile as it will be cheaper than AT&T even with my corporate discount.
Yeah the nexus 4 was a no brainer for me, I was sick of my vivid, and I am under contract until march 2014, so it was the cheapest option. It's a nice phone especially for the price. But its not perfect either, I will warn you. Camera is a downgrade from the vivid, it doesn't suck, and in well lit rooms the camera is just as nice. But in low light, the vivid owns it. Also build quality doesn't suck but it's not built as nice as the vivid. It seems well built out of the box, but there are gaps between the screen and bezel that tend to get dust stuck in them and over time the back glass develops a slight creaking sound to it. Also the chrome around the outside edges gets scuffed, poor design choice imo, should of used a flat silver instead.
Figured I'd lay it to you straight. It's an excellent phone but it's not perfect. And make sure you get a case if you get one, back glass is very slick and the phone tends to make suicide dives on its own when you just sit it down. Happened to me twice, luckily, no damage.

When my wife's Galaxy 2 Skyrocket got its SECOND upgrade (originally Gingerbread, upgraded to ICS, then upgraded to Jellybean) and when HTC said that the Vivid would NOT get an upgrade to Jellybean, that was what made my mind up that this was the last HTC phone that I would own. I've had three, but I am done with HTC. That S4 looks sooooo good!
My dad and one of my friends have an Optimus G. Its a nice phone.

I thought the same thing this is the last htc i will buy.
My Optimus G arrives Friday, looks like just in time as the forum is dying again (the 2nd time since I have had my Vivid.)
Yeah the phone is getting old and people are getting their early upgrades now. If cyanogenmod would of came last summer, development might still be going but now, too little too late.
Lesson learned for me, if it's not a popular device, don't upgrade to it. Yeah at first I was happy but a couple months in, the honeymoon was over and the bugs of sense 3.6 that were never address, terrible battery life, and no actual roms outside of modified stock roms had me plotting a plan to get a galaxy nexus... But by the time I had the money, the nexus 4 was out, and well that's a no brainer

So, I am thinking about going to trade in my M8 for a S5 due to how horrible the radio is compared to my S4 on 3G, 4G and WiFi. I bought it at a Best Buy does anyone know would I have to exchange it there or can I do it at a Sprint store?
Also I am rooted with S-OFF I have a TWRP back up that is completely stock that I can flash. Will flashing that plus the modded hboot be enough for me to trade in without them voiding my warranty and not letting me trade?

You have to go through Best Buy being as it came from them, just as long as you're within 14 days of original purchase. As far as being rooted and everything else, they don't care! I've sold them back a few phones running custom ROMs. Pretty funny, last year I sold them an S3 running dazednconfused (awesome themer by the way) "Wicked Sensations" ROM. It said wicked sensations all over it, even the bootanimation, I figured they would have said something, but no! As long as it powers up they're good with it.Good luck
Have you seen the s5 yet? I'm here getting my m8 exchanged for hopefully one with a better working radio and they have the s5 here. I'm honestly not impressed with it at all. The m8 just feels so much more premium and touchwiz looks damn horrible . But to each his own
I debated trading mine in for the gs5, but I decided that I like the m8 better all around.

I went to best buy and tried to trade mine in for another M8 and they didn't have any so then I was like screw it I'll try the GS5. They didn't have any of those either and no other stores in my area do either. Right now I am screwed because I have until Friday to exchange or return. I could return and buy a new one when it comes in stock but then I will have to pay CA tax on it which is tax on the full MSRP of $799 I bought the one I got in SC for $216 after tax vs $264 in CA

Have you visited the gs5 forums? Believe me when I say the grass is definitely not greener on that side.
Yea, I've been there too. Each phone suffers from the same problems. Chalk it up to Sprint not having their network ready for tri-band phones, and Google disabling extsdcard write support.
Samsung has always had better radios than HTC, however my M8 has the best radio thus far over any of my other HTC phones. It still isn't as good as Samsung but it's decent. The only reason I would consider a GS5 would be for the camera. HTC needs to stop with the camera gimmiks and put one good sensor in the camera and be done with it. I think the GS5 is a nice phone, however anytime I have used a galaxy line phone I don't like it at all. It just feels cheap and I hate Touch Wiz. I actually really like HTC Sense. I have been using Sense since the windows mobile days. Samsung phones are by no means perfect, but I do think you will be happier with the radio & camera but that is about it. I don't think it's worth the trade off in my opinion. I have seen plenty of phones with hardware issues both HTC & Samsung are not perfect.

For a couple of years now the radios have been identical.. They're both using the built in qualcomm. Ever since the lte phones first started coming out. The exception would have been back when sprints 4g phones were wimax. And at that time, htc's were actually much much better then samsungs. Samsung was known for having bad radios.
Well I was finally able to find a store with an M8 to exchange mine for today (last M8 at a Best Buy within 50 miles). I haven't been able to do too much tests but my WiFi is 100% better so I am happy now. I guess I did have a defective phone.

I should say radio performance has always been better on Samsung. My m7 compared to a GS4 or Note 3 the Samsung usually would have a lower dBm where my m7 would cut out the Samsung would hold an LTE signal better. The m8 has been much better than my m7 but I have never preferred radio performance on an HTC device versus a Samsung. Not to say I don't prefer HTC over Samsung. I have never liked the Galaxy phones, not to say they are not a nice phone.

Keep in mind that the S5 has the same TriBand Qualcomm Chip and Radio as the M8 and probably very similar firmware as well.
I suspect a "Working" M8 will run very similar to an S5.
Granted some M8's are not working correctly.
It's also extremely painful to get an M8 swapped out if you are over 14 days.
I had an S5 in my hands and brought home but stupid BestBuy sales clerk sold me a Verizon. In that time span I decided I prefer stay with the Devil I Know and got another M8.
If you are under 14days and you are having Network issues on an M8. SWAP IT OUT IMMEDIATELY.
New M8 is night and day working better. But I am very worried long term how it will hold up.
