Hey guys. Just got a captivate a few days ago and I love it except for the gps. I was just wondering if the leaked build of froyo improves the gps at all and if its worth updating before they release the official one. If so, where can I find the latest version of the leaked build? Thank you for any help.

The leaked Froyo does not necessarily improve on GPS because many people don't have issues where many people do. Give it a shot and search different methods of changing your LBStestmode settings to see what works. Second, for me it was worth installing as 2.2 offers stuff you cant have on 2.1 such as the newer Gmail, flash 10.1 and other goodies. It is faster as well. Search the threads in the Dev section for different ROM's and how to flash. Ask questions about flashing after doing exhaustive searching because you will be able to find most answers in those threads.

Cognition 2.2 Beta 9.1.1
Grab this and never look back.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I'm kinda on the fence about this as well. I should be getting my Captivate tomorrow and I have been doing a crap ton of research in the past few days. Everything I have read points to either the "Official Leaked Froyo 2.2" or the newest "Cognition v2.2 BETA9.1.1". My only concern is the known issues that are listed on the Cognition website...
MMS won't work if you have "(" or ")" in your phone numbers
Contact groups sometimes opens the wrong group, you can fix this by replacing it with an I9K contacts.apk, but then you lose AT&T contact syncing
No Voodoo voices, supercurio is working on this (first boot will take awhile, be patient!)
Everyone has the same device_id

Is this true with both builds listed or just with the Cognition v2.2 BETA9.1.1? I'm also completely new to Android being that I am a fomer iPhone junkie. So any help, how-to's, or info would be appreciated. In all honesty I was going to start here, youtube.com/watch?v=S9YnSVvfHpQ and if that wasn't successful go ahead and try Cognition. I'm just the type of person that likes to have things working properly and fast, like everyone else.
And for those wondering why I have been a member for over two and a half years and this is my first post, I have usually been able to find what I need and not had to ask questions.
I would point out that DesignGears has a perfectly rockin' cognition for eclair too. My first flash was 2.1.4 and it was amazing compared to stock eclair.
nothing really helps the gps, you either got it good, or not. (much research into that opinion btw.)
Cog 8.1+ is the shiz atm.
There's a couple of other froyo flavors also. I wouldn't go back to eclair at this point.
If nothin' else, it's a crap ton of fun flashin' and figuring stuff out. I'd do it just for that.
Not sure on MMS. I had no problems with it, but my numbers were already formatted without the parenthesis.
The ability to do these type of things is what lead me to the Android platform over the iPhone OS, it's just too locked down even with it being jailbroken IMHO. I'm just basically looking for a point of refferance I suppose. Basically the things to do and not to do to the phone you know. For me it's more of a challenge because I'm learning something new. I don't know if it's because I'm not looking in the right places or what but it seems like step by step guides are hard to come by regarding this stuff.
unless you use the i9000 ROM with captivate kernel, all Captivate Froyo builds are based off the captivate beta of Froyo.
It had a enough bugs that i rolled back to 2.1. Don't get me wrong, it is stable - but I figure i will wait for a more bug free beta to be the basis of my Froyo jump.

Not so much. You just gotta be patient and diligent. There's a couple of gems laying around but they are usually in the middle of a thread. The cognition thread for example. It's a beast to keep up with but given time you can digest most of what you need there. And there are plenty of links throughout that will clarify or intimidate as your experience and skill allow. Trouble is there's a TON of junk because people get impatient, or lazy I guess. Same questions, over and over.
I came to the captivate from a blackberry. Not much customization goin' on there. So as a stone noob, I read the cognition thread from post 1. All of it. I am a pretty confident android operator now. And I can't read nor write a line of code. In any language!
And you can too. Get busy, Grasshopper.
If you live on campus or rely on some sort of enterprise WIFI then go to froyo. Using eclair I could NEVER connect to the wifi at my school. It would say that I was connected of course but no data would transfer.
I switched to Froyo and haven't had problems since.
Also, my GPS is rockin!
alphadog, what "bugs" did you have when using Froyo? And what you mentioned is a lot of where my confusion comes into play, "kernals and ROMs" are like greek to me and I have no idea what they are or what the difference is between the two.
Sulphur, thanks so much for the advice. I'm gonna go check out the Cognition thread now and see what I can dig up. That's really what I needed, just a starting point. I'm thinking as of now I will go with the latest Cognition build for a bit and see how that goes.
DirtyRasa, no campus here but I do rely on wi-fi pretty heavily. I use it at home all the time to cut down on charges to my bill for data usage, so that's good to know. Just curious though, are you using the leaked Froyo or the Cognition build? And if you have had both which one do you prefer?
cybercowboy, wasn't trying to jack your thread or anything but I was in search of the same info as well.

More power to you. I see tons of people on here less than a month with hundreds of posts more than me.
-->Back on topic. YES go with Froyo! There are many options available, but for noobs, i'd reccomend the either a DG ROM or the leaked and tweaked.
Thats no problem mindburn. The more information the better. I actually flashed to the leaked froyo last night and so far so good. Gps is still horrible. I think im gonna try the cognition build tonight and see what I like better. Ill let you know.

Thanks man, almost sounds as though you are one step ahead of me actually. I get my phone tomorrow and I was going to actually try the leaked first and then cognition. Let me know how things turn out for you and I will in return do the same.
So I got the phone yesterday and let me say, when I got it out of the box I knew I was going to like it. This damn thing looks sexy as hell! Anyway, 10 minutes after I got it I had successfully upgraded to the leaked Froyo and rooted the phone. Everything is going fine and I haven't had any problems thus far. It is at times a little buggy but I have learned that if I kill some of the tasks, the speed seems to improve. I thought about try Cognition today but when I load it up, I've only got the odin.exe, PDA.tar, & PIT.pit. Do I have to have CSC & ETC file mentioned in the program as well? Also, what exactly are these things, I didn't have to do anything like this on the stock Froyo.
U should of done DG's AOSP beta 3! That's what I'm rocking and have had it for almost a month and its amazing! I wanted to use cognition but I read on ppl saying they had bugs or it just wasn't stable for them. But to each their own! Unfortunately when I last checked DG closed the thread on that ROM. Glad to know u got froyo going! I made the switch from an iPhone jailbroken to the captivate and it's amazing! I'm still new to android but u just gotta read everything and their r so many ppl who are willing to help!

With the announcement of the official froyo coming out in about two weeks, i think i'll just stay where I'm at for right now. I don't wanna try and win the triathlon with only a week training.

The pda and pit file are all you need. he just put everything in those two files. Flashes just fine that way.
Just a quick update for everyone, I am now running the latest Cognition 2.2 BETA 9.1.3. And I *MOD EDIT* love it! This thing is super fast now, pretty amazing really. I also somewhat have my homescreens the way that I want them as well. Only questions to everyone now is what do you all run? What are your must have and go to applications? Like the best of the best kind of thing.
BTW Sulphur, thanks!

You're asking in the wrong place mate, go and talk with some LG representatives or in their forums (if they have).
O2X have ICS already, look for CM9 (CyanogenMod9) and try it, is in beta though not everything works and problems are to be expected.
Finally; dude this is NO freaking yahoo answers, twitter or facebook so stop spamming with threads.

I ve naively installed cyanogen 9 with ics after going in loops and not being able to find simple information on front camera functions and why it is not working with skype.
welllll, let me put it this way
I would not recommend the above mentioned rom to my worst enemy
the half baked thing may be ok for people who are developing these things but for normal users it is just plainly and simply a big heartache , and apart from few different coloured user interfaces there is nothing that a normal user could call useful or good for everyday operation of the phone.
I lost my contacts at least 10 times in the span of 3 weeks that it is installed,
it restarts randomly, just sitting there on the table and next minute you notice silly blue starting animation twirling around,
video camera does not work,
normal camera works but freezes as soon as you try to install some other camera apps,
gallery freezes from time to time,
default music player does not work, I could only play music from es file explorer,
gps apps do not work or work randomly, you can not rely on them if you go somewhere.
hooking to free wi fi hot spots is a nightmare,
and this is just the start of my problems.
I really cried once after the phone just decided not to work out of the blue showing logo screen and not much else.
So, if you want your phone doing most of the normal things, DO NOT install untested half baked software lingering around.
Install them only if you understand inner workings of android system and can fix things that go wrong daily on the fly, because, I guarantee, things go wrong with this ROM when least expected and when you really need your phone.
Im currently trying to understand or for someone to explain to me how to return to gingerbread version because Im at my wits ends with this cg 9
You have to use NVflash to flash the original ROM from LG.
I'm not really familiar with this forum, so I don't know yet where to find the specific instructions, but just searching for "NVFlash" should give you the right results

thanks for info, I had a look into nvflash and one of senior members on these forums have recommended to be very careful when using it so Ill stay clear from that
and as I learn more about android system Im staring to realise that most of this so called development and upgrading is trial and error and should not be performed or used by everyday smart phone users.
Mu mum has lg p500 which has stock gingerbread upgrade on it and the phone is rock solid , not missing a beat for over a year, everything working perfectly .
I bought my phone because of my mums experience but made a huge mistake by thinking that upgrading android system is as easy and simple as you would upgrade a windows system.
Well its not that complicated - but a little bit more work than upgrading windows.
but in the end you can always restore the original system - like windows
Nvflash is not that complicated if you just read all the steps a couple of times. I have done a nvflash a couple of times and has worked fine for me every time.

Hey guys. I am totally new to this tablet so please bare with me
I have knowledge in flashing android stuff (I have a galaxy S and I reflashed it more times than I can count till I found an ICS version that suits me) so I know what I am dealing with, but just don't seem to get it.
Now I am at the stage of not seeing CyanogenMod in the moboot menu (followed this tut http://liliputing.com/2012/01/how-to-install-android-4-0-on-the-hp-touchpad-cyanogenmod-9-alpha.html ) but I will solve that tomorrow.
Until then, please tell me which ROM is the MOST STABLE and the SMOOTHEST available ( I don't have any preferences. May it be ICS, GB or whichever)
Thanks a bunch
I am also interested in this as I am getting quite bored with my TP on webOS...
the latest nightly of cm9 is your best bet.

Not to sound rude or anything, but there's a SEARCH function that works wonders on the section of HP Touchpad.
This question has been asked MANY, MANY times over, and each time people ask the same thing - which is best, which does THIS or THAT.
The only answer anyone can give you is pick one and try it. I suggest you start with the official CM9 nightlies, as they're the most recent and up-to-date. From there, try something else - AoKP perhaps, or CherryKANG, or even stick with WebOS (which is the smoothest and best-working of them all, just not Android).
So please, in the future, SEARCH before asking this oft-asked, always-answered-the-same question. Please. I beg of you.
I like webOS and in android the CM9 official nightlies. I used to use cherry Kang until the dev stopped updating it. The best os, in my opinion, is webOS. Battery life is much, much better than android. Unfortunately, there's not much selection for apps But for just Web browsing, email and music it's hard to beat. And Skype works fully.
Hi to all,
1. Awhile ago (in a distant galaxy, far away...) I rooted my Hero and moved over to CM7(a couple of times before getting it right...) During the process then, I failed to safeguard the nandroid backup, and no longer have that to fall back on...
2. Recently, I signed on with Hulu, and now want to use the Hero for watching videos and discovered... no way. I have spent a few days looking into this googling and going where it took me, and have spent today spending my time here looking. After searching and coming away with the realization that it isn't going to happen, I spent some time reading the first eight pages on the forum here to get familiar with the why's and why not's... but still have this little bit of hope that I have missed something... and I stumbled across the Zero Hero mod.
So, before I replace CM7 with Zero Hero, I thought I would check with folks who know way more than me....
1. Not having the original nandroid backup on file to use" in case of emergency" should I just leave well enough alone or use a recent nandroid backup of the currently working system (I am really unfamiliar with backing up in general...) to fall back on? I see no reason to ever need a backup of the original system that came with the Hero but... just checking!
2. If I utilize Zero Hero and replace CM7, will I be able to install Adobe Flash 10.1... or 10.2.. and use it to use on the web in general and Hulu specifically?
3. Am I trading of anything of consequence or importance by replacing CM7 with Zero Hero? (I am of the understanding at this point that CM7 is just not going to work with Flash Player. I also see that I will probably have to use another browser like Dolphin rather than the "stock" on the phone now with Zero Hero which is okay as far as I see things now.)
I will thank everyone now and again later (!!) for any answers, thoughts or opinions on any of the 3 questions together or any single question that they can help with! If your answer is to go ahead and buy a new phone... then I will start shopping!
Thanks a ton for your time and help,

A nandroid is just a snapshot of how everything is at that moment. So you can make a nandroid now and will always be able to go back to it for whatever reason.
Going between cm and sense is just a matter of preference. They both have benefits. Its just a matter of preference. You can install zero and nandroid, then go back to cm or switch between them as you wish.
Flash will never truly work on the hero. The sense roms have flash "lite" but flash won't fully work.
I was addicted to my hero and couldn't think of switching to a new phone. I finally did about a month ago and it really is amazing how much farther new phones are from the hero. I'd sadly recommend upgrading if it's within your means, but there's a few that are always here to help with the hero.

Thanks for your help. After all the effort so far on this, admitting this is deflating... your reply really confirms the slow dawning of this creeping around my head. It is time to retire the Hero I guess after all. :crying: It has been a faithful sidekick all these years.
Off I am to find a new phone, but what to do with all this info. I have acquired??? Guess I'll try to share it when I can...
Can I ask if you would recommend the phone you now have? Unless something else has come out since or is on the horizon??
Really, thanks, I do feel like I gave the Hero all I could :highfive: Closure, it does kind of feel good!

I switched to Verizon from cspire for several reasons. It's awesome having 4G. I got the s3. I'm loving it. The nexus 4 is coming out soon. I looked around for awhile before i decided. It was difficult going to a 4.8" from a 3.2" but it's nice to have more real estate. Its just up to you. Play with them at the store and you'll eventually find one you like.

Okay, I wanted to take a moment to talk about the development for our device.
Recently CM decided to no longer support Tegra 2 devices as they are starting to get dated. So basically that boils down to the fact that the CM10.1 will be the last one for our device that I do.
Currently I'm trying to jump start the process of putting out our updated kernel from 2.6.36.4 -> 3.1. This will hopefully put our device at a point where everything should work.
DerArtem is the lead developer on the kernel, but has been busy because he just got married and works a full time job, which puts a damper on his time (which is understandable).
I am putting in an 1-2 hours every morning on this, trying to fix those bugs and was just tipped on a possible way to minimize the overload of the log with the USB error. This will be a hold off till we get the kernel done as these issues should go away after the update.
I am sad to see this tablet come to an end (though not yet). We all have to admit that its time we all start moving on. I am going to push to get these last bit done and call it quits. This can take anywhere from 2-5 months to finish up, maybe a bit longer and then our device will be done.
I have had an amazing time learning about Android under DJ_Steve and DerArtem, and thank them for taking the time to teach me.
I thank you what you done so far and in the future. Can blame you one bit for your decisions.
I think setting an "end game" is respectable, and is a good goal. The kernel work is the key to smoothing things over on what has been wonderful development thus far.
The fact you've taken us this far sir is very commendable and you and the crew deserve many thanks. For your time and efforts, you have my gratitude, and my tablet serves as a hobby rather than a shelved device.
4.2.x has been flawed since release by Google, and with the way android has evolved, future versions will undoubtedly require more current hardware and OEM support. The latest tablet releases have as much computing power as a 2 year old laptop! Thanks to you, we've managed to play with JB, and I look forward to what comes before a final release.

Wow, I hate doing this, but I may have to close up shop on all this. Severe lack of any real work is getting done as I am looking for jobs and trying to have some game time as well.
The time to do this isn't worth it. I may ask for payments for my next ROM ($1 per download). Seriously, I hate doing it but this just isn't worth it anymore. Currently working on a AOKP release, to see if this may resolve any bugs I am having.
Hi giveen,
first of all thank you for all the time you spent on our old device. I already donated you some time ago and always had an eye on your progesses. I really understand your decision to ask for some payment for all the work and that is absolutely ok for me.
I use my DS7 (wifi only) on a daily base to check my mails, surf the net and stream some TV and video from my HTPC. Until now I use a HC 3.2 mod (514 mod by dreamer) together with V6 Supercharger script and am so far quite ok with that. So far I see no need to buy me a new tablet as long as the DS7 fits my few needs
But before I collect all my courage and update my DS7 in the near future to your CM10 build I want to ask a few things:
1. Is your build already stable and usable enough for the things I do with my device?
2. Any news from DerArtem about the kernel work? Will there be a new kernel for our device in the future?
THX,
Michael

If its from your HTPC, I honestly don't know as I have never tried it before. This latest build is much more stable, though it still has the gmail keyboard crash that I am tracking down. If you are happy with what you have, don't do anything. I would hate for you to make a purchase and not be happy.
I haven't heard from DerArtem in several weeks because he is in another country (Russia) doing a job. (He lives in Germany). To be honest, I don't think a new kernel is going to happen and I'm really upset by it.

One issue I see here is that when you start charging, a person paying for it like a app from the Play Store, they expect things to work. This "might" cause you to spend more time than you have been on it. Just my $0.02!
Didn't somebody donate an unused DS7 for DerArtem for this kernel project?

They can contact me if they are having an issue. I appreciate the concern though.
Yes, someone did give their DS7 to him.

I'll be downloading it later after some usage and a charge.
I'm working on sensors now. The old sensor drivers we used were for something we dont even have. I found the correct Android drivers but they are for qualcomm devices, so I need to modify them to work.
