How to change number of homescreens in 4.2.1 - Nexus 7 General

Well, I just updated to 4.2.1 because I finally got around to fixing my custom kernel issue and updating.
Anyway, I probably missed it but how exactly do I change the number of homescreens? It used to be in settings under display but now I have no idea where it's at.

You can't... and as far as I recall, you never have been able to, with the stock launcher.
If you require that order of customisation, get a custom launcher from Google PlayStore... something like Apex or Nova launcher.
Rgrds,
Ged.

Really? Man, I could've sworn I've done that with Trebuchet when JB came out.
Oh well, not a huge deal. I've narrowed it all down to one screen right now. I've been seriously spoiled with Meego (Maemo 6) and don't want this multiple homescreen, etc. stuff.
Thanks for the answer.

Ahh... well, you didn't mention Trebuchet in your original post. Trebuchet isn't stock - it's normally shipped with CyanogenMod based ROMs.
The standard stock launcher that ships with stock Jellybean has very limited configuration options.
Rgrds,
Ged.

I'm all messed up then. I thought the stock launcher was called Trebuchet- not the stock one in CM.
Anyway, I'm running straight stock JB and was surprised to see it didn't have that.
Thanks again for the clarification. I'll just deal with it as it's not that big of a deal. If I get an itch, I might move to another launcher but I doubt it.

I'd say just put nova launcher on, it's no worse than stock and actually faster than the stock launcher. Apex has more features but it's considerably slower.

[Q] putting stock google rom on my galaxy

Hey, this is my first time posting, I've been browsing a bit since I got my galaxy. I cant really find an answer to what I'm looking for.
I'm not a big fan of samsung's UI on my galaxy, I'd much prefer the Android 2.1 stock that comes on the nexus one... no fancy stuff. Just basic... How would I go abouts doing this? I'm totally new to this, I know I'd have to root my device, after that I'm lost.
Thanks A lot!
Some guys have created a stock Android ROM for the SGS, but it's not fully functional, no camera and no video.
Android can run on many devices (even iPhone and Palm) but the problem are the drivers. If there's no driver, you'll find yourself without camera, wifi, GPS or whatever, and possibly the battery use will be greater.
Yep, there was a vanilla rom but nothing worked, pointless for everyday use.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
So what would be your recommendation for a rom? seeing as they're are so many out there.
there are a couple of ROMS in the dev section without the touchwiz launcher
example:
[ROM]Rombie v2a -*I9000XXJPH*- Themed|no TouchWiz|Pre-Rooted|
personally i have never used one so i can't give any feedback on the matter. if you dont want to mess around too much you could always use a launcher like ADWlauncher or LauncherPro, these basically reskin the home screens to a more likeable layout (by many), there is even a home replacement called launcher2 i think, which looks very basic.
I'm looking for something similar. I'm already rooted, unlocked and running ADW, but I just can't cope with Samsung's stock phone and sms apps. They're truly bloody awful.
all i can say is: wait for http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ ...
it's great and it can not take very long any more (i hope)

You can say that again the sms app is a complete fail!!!
I don't mind the dialer so much. but the rest of touchwiz and the widgets is a waste of space..

When a custom recovery is made, we will start to see themes appear for the Thrill. Until then, I would just wait and play it safe by just theming launchers like ADW or Launcher Pro.

There's gotta be something up by now.
I'd focus more on stuff like using Standard 2.3 Froyo Themes. Which I don't know where to find. Any sauce on this guys?
Til then play it safe, I personally HATE launchers because they eat the Thrill's battery alive.

We cane flash themes to custom roms already. You can't theme the stock rom because its odex'd. You'll never be able to theme the stock LG firmware as is out of the box.
As far as launchers eating battery, that's just nonsense. The launchers don't use battery. They use memory. But so does the stock launcher. The stock launcher is an app just like any aftermarket launcher. What uses battery is Widgets that need to update, and each launcher has certain Widgets active by default. Bit that can be changed. Of course a poorly coded launcher that doesn't allow the phone to sleep would cause battery drain, but I've yet to use a launcher that did so.
For the original poster, if you want to theme the stock firmware you will need to deodex the stock rom first.
If you're on a nonstock rom then check the Themes and Apps section for flashing themes.

Well from there it'd seem as if your only choice was to take and ROOT then flash the ROM.
Risk it? You tell me, I just need to find a ROM that changes the look of the bottom launcher. I hate how plain it is.
Aside from that, I hear the Doomed Froyo is one of the most slick ROMs and is bare boned stock along with your 3D, 3D Camera, & removed Bloatware.
You tell me? I want to go with it but haven't balled up to Voiding my warranty and not being able to return it if there's a future problem.
It's in your hands,
As far as launchers you'd be safe with Battery Life on the 'GO Launcher EX' works awesome if there's enough room for ya.
Have fun, tell me the end results?

Rooting 99.99999 % of the time won't brick your device... that 0.00001% is user error. Root just allows you to change system files... like making you an admin on a PC...
Once you have clockworkmod installed it is almost impossible to brick your device just by flashing a rom. Because you can just go back to cwm and restore stock or a working version... also root will allow you to use any of the custom themes i have made. And you can always go back to stock rom ... and unroot like from the store... doomed Roms are amazing especially the slim version...

im using stock but removed all the useless eye-candy widgets. then rooted and overclocked to 1.5ghz and all is smooth.
if you feel the need to change most people are using adw launcher ex.
but i think this question will soon become a problem of the past because the ICS launcher is pretty awesome out of the box.

Changeing Launchers
Hi,
is there any way - if you switch to another Launcher - to pre-populate the new launcher windows form the old one, so you do not have to redo everything ?
thanks
Erik
Currently I have go launcher ex installed. Its a little better than the stock but could be better.
I also tried louncherpro, but since this is official not supported for TAB, the look was bad. The icons really small and apart from each other (low res.) Widgets were huge. The speed of the launcher was however amazing I would say. I didn't have any widgets however (i use it on my phone and its amazing).

what rom and kernal are you using, and is it stable with everything working?
thanks!

right now im using the Overcome Rom with the Motley Kernel overclocked to 1.5ghz.
Its running smooth as could. No FCs or Reboots so far and i've been using it a lot these last few days.
As I said the ICS Roms are still Alpha, but incredibly stable for such an early developement state! They dont have Hardware acceleration which makes it kinda unusable if you want to watch video on the tab. but that will soon be added and then ICS will definately be the better option.
seriously there is no reason not to root and install a rom. its incredibly easy compared to some other devices i rooted so far and its nearly unbrickable so you don't really risk much

Make sure to play with the settings; when I tried ADW I didn't think much of it till I removed all the animations and it was lightning quick.
What launcher? Easy. ADWLauncher EX which is the one that has hardware acceleration built-in (not a single hiccup in months here).
I would also recommend Adw.

Also ADW.Ex here. The best so far...
Stock launcher felt smoother for me at first because it had a slower transition between screens. After some tweaking and animations turned off ADW feels slightly better.
Iam using adw launcher too..

Not really the place to ask this but here goes anyhow.
Yeah it will drain your battery a bit more because higher clocking will need higher voltage.
That being said the tab spends most its time idling with way lower hz which of course use way less voltage.
So yeah you will drain a bit more but not that much. I'm really impressed with how long my battery is lasting on mine.

[Q] Any "closet" TouchWiz lovers out there?

Thursday, April 5, 2012
XDA Members:
Okay. So this is going to sound a little strange. First, let me give you some back-story. A couple of months ago, I got my N7000. I was so happy. It was the best device I'd ever used. However, up until that moment, I had only ever used AOSP builds of Android; more specifically, CyanogenMod. So needless to say, TouchWiz immediately rubbed me the wrong way. I installed two additional launchers, and was torn between them. They were the stock Gingerbread launcher and ADW-EX. The speed of the AOSP Gingerbread launcher was addictive, but I was already so familiar with ADW from CyanogenMod. So I eventually just uninstalled both and decided to give TouchWiz a truly fair chance. At first, I had trouble customizing and navigating the UI, but eventually adapted. Over the course of the next two weeks I became accustomed to using it regularly.
About a month later, imilka released his AOSP build of 4.0.3. I was ecstatic to see an AOSP build for the N7000, so I immediately installed it. I was so excited. However, upon first boot, something strange happened. I started to feel uncomfortable. I didn't like the AOSP look and feel of ICS. I actually missed TouchWiz. I thought, "How can this be?" I'm a sworn follower and believer of open-source development. I should have been thrilled to be back on AOSP ground. But TouchWiz had deviously seduced me. It's clean lines and playful, colorful UI had won me over. I eventually got used to AOSP 4.0.3/4.0.4; but I must admit, I'd really like to see the finished ICS build Sammy has in store for the N7000.
So, what I'd like to know is: are there any others out there who used to despise TouchWiz but have grown fond of it? If so, please reply and tell us your story. I'd love to hear it.
Thank you,
Ed (Mister_Mxyzptlk)

Never liked how TW3 looked but TW4 to me is awesome. I for one cannot understand the hatred for it. For those who hate it should understand that TW is much more than just the looks. And even the looks are to my taste.
I am not going to touch touchwiz until after the ICS update.. give it a fair review until and through then, then decide..
I really don't like TW...looks cheap, not coherent, it's sluggish for me. But hey, people have different tastes. And im sure lots of us here love TW - and frankly speaking, TW is not only the interface but Samsung apps too, which for Note are exceptionally useful.
ummm Touchwi for me is ......umm
OK so i basically am a fan of good looking Icons and somehow hate the look (but not the feel) of the Touchwiz interface....i think the whole not using Square Icons coz apple may sue has rubbed Sammy the wrong way ...perhaps an option could have been given to enable/disable the background behind the icons for ppl lke me...
that is my only pain with touchwiz ,,,,and that is the reason i have adopted to using Touchwiz 4.5 as a full time launcher on my note ,,,it brings more or less everything to the table that touchwiz4 does and some addons such as theming options ....

What's the big deal about 4.4 anyway

So now that I finally got it working, it just looks like they changed some interface elements. Which I personally don't think look as nice as in 4.3 (those rounded popups that notify you of, say, when a program is granted root, look awful, as do the icons in the pulldowns now; like they went in the direction of MS and tried to make things more monotone). Is there something I'm missing here? I mean I know on the back end a lot of APIs had changes and additions so I can see it being mandatory for certain programs, but beyond that....better battery? sleeker interface? even more buttery smooth? I mean the user experience....
i haven't received the update yet

I think it feels a bit smoother than 4.3 for me, I wasn't one of the people who had problems with 4.2.2. I think you're right about the interface changes though, they are subtle but in places they changed to the monotone look but left some of the blue holo stuff in there too like they couldn't make up there mind. Waiting to see how battery goes, certainly doesn't seem any worse so far.

Yep, its not going to magically last for weeks with 10+ hrs of screen time lol but it seems grand. Feel a bit underwhelmed after googles 'kitkat for everyone' talk and then we (n7 2012 users) don't have the ART option or the GEL launcher. I know you can install the apk, I actually use nova which now has the transparent top and bottom bars features but found it confusing after updating from 4.3 and seeing the same launcher!

You can find the new launcher in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47031599
It's called launcher 3. It's the launcher from the nexus 5 build of 4.4 without Google now and the keyboard popup when you press home. If you want the one with Google now you can extract it from gapps(I extracted it from PA odexed).

Fail.
