OTA Disabled when using Cyanogen????

Hello all...
I just read about Android 2.2 Froyo that is scheduled to come out sometime within the next few months. What I am wondering is will I get the OTA update pushed to my phone from Google and will I be able to update?
I am running CyanogenMod 5.0.6-N1 on my Nexus One.
I apologize if this seems like a dumb question but I am a newbie to all this.

OTA will be gone after rooting, but the update will still be available for root users to be applied through recovery.
It might even leak to root users sooner as was done in the past

If you have rooted your phone (which you have to install cyan), you will need to put back stock recovery and stock rom in order to successfully install the OTA. What Knight said was that, usually updates such as Froyo/2.2 will be out for rooted users like you through Cyan or other Roms, so you do not have to install stock rom/rec. Just wait it Out!

Ohhhhh ok so the next Cyanogen Update should incorporate all the features that will come with Froyo....GOT IT!!!!

Even though you aren't getting a notification about the OTA - rooted users will still be able to download a .zip and flash it through recovery just like a custom ROM. This version specifically though will not be the one Google released, I believe they will change things to in order to make it usable by us rooted users.
I don't know really though, but it looks like that is what happened with the previous OTA. Cyanogen will integrate Froyo's features into his ROM regardless, so I guess it really doesn't matter.

[Q] Newbie questions

I am new to LG Revolution (trying to install custom ROM on sister's phone). I am coming from 2 different Samsung devices.
I have VZ6, 2.2.2, rooted. Windows 7 64
Here are my questions:

CWM download link gave me a "recovery-cwm-pr1.tar.gz", so I extracted it with 7-zip and get a "recovery-cwm-pr1.tar". How do I get the .img file??
2) What exactly is ADB shell? Where do I find instruction on that?
I assumed installation of Revolt 1.5 is straight forward after I get CWM on the phone. I am just having a hard time to follow those instructions on CWM tho.

I'm no professional at all of this, but I'd recommend downloading the revotoolkit. i;ve not used it on vz6, but that is how most of us went about getting cwm. believe there is a thread about it in development (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144951).

I would get the GB update. Then root with using the post in development by mtmichealson. Then flash Gingervolt.

is the Gingervolt mature?? this is my sister's phone, so I am not going to flash it every week when there is a patch or update... I highly doubt my sister (technologically challenged) will appreciate Gingerbread anyways.

Gingervolt was just released so there will be more releases soon.
If she wouldn't appreciate it just get stock gingerbread on and leave it at that
Edit: not to take anything away from any the developers here don't take it that way please.

Nice to see people are still working on new ROM on this phone. All devs on Droid Charge have moved to Bionic and left us in the cold.

Thankfully we have dedicated people here, who get excited about the little breakthroughs on this phone. The phone is great, the hardware is fast and responsive, the programming (from what I hear) is a disaster. All the Roms I have tested have been stableish on this phone, a couple force closes here and there, but nothing too intrusive. Gingerbread is perfect, and the Gingervolt from Mtmichaelson is stellar, no hangups, no force closes yet. I would expect themes to roll out soon, and some more stable Roms. I would assume the dream of CM7 is on the horizon now.
In agreement with Haro's comment, you will find that we will not simply give up on this phone, we have been through too much.

[Q] Is there a recent, easy/comprehensive how to guide for rooting and flashing roms?

I have my Droid 3, and its been great to me. Its my first smartphone and first android phone, and it will always have that place in my heart That being said, not getting ics was a letdown from Motorola and sparked my interest in rooting for awhile now. I had always been cautious as I would not want to void my warranty and then brick my device, as that is simply my luck, lol. I was fortunate in that when my device broke due to an abnormal defect (Scoured the forums, never found anything and Motorola support had no idea, immediately shipped me a new device haha) it got replaced this past summer, but now my warranty expired in October and I'm noticing the lag more and more. SO.... I have been looking into the process specific to the droid 3, and I have found bits and pieces, such as using motofail now for the latest ota and what not. But is there a specific, comprehensive how-to guide towards doing so, that is current? I've found threads and get excited, only to see a comment saying "x" is outdated use this instead blah blah blah. I was fine with this, as its an outdated device and all, until noticing such exists for the kindle fire (Girlfriend was open to possibly rooting it as well, have been looking into that too. but that's another story ) I'd post the link, but alas, I'm a noob and do not have the ability to.
I know I am just being paranoid, or just terrible at searching the forum lol. But if a super guide like this exists, I would feel so much more comfortable in proceeding with rooting.

Nor sure about a guide but here's what I did
1) Root device using motofail http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497690
2) Install Safestrap http://blog.hash-of-codes.com/how-to-safestrap/
3) Create an additional ROM slot
4) Dowonload the ROM of your choice. This might be a good place to start http://androidforums.com/droid-3-all-things-root/494721-rom-current-droid-3-rom-list.html
5) Activate the blank rom slot and flash the rom
6) reboot and you're up

Good writeup. Also I would suggest you stick with something stock based. Minimoto is very nice and has excellent battery life. JB is still alpha and takes a bit of tweaking to get it stable.

No obstacles or anything, was pretty easy just updating my rom today actually, and fell back on them as well. I figure you already went ahead, but figured I'd finally respond nonetheless

Hello I just recently ordered my DROID 3 from Ebay (can't wait to get it). Now I know that there are two roms which are the CM 9 and CM 10 and they work with ICS and JB respectively. Also there are variations with KEXEC and stuff like AOKP now this is getting confusing for me. I have never owned an Android my whole life I have been a Linux user. So are the alpha builds of CM9 and 10 working properly? As in can you make calls, use the play store and download apps on both? Which one should I use? I could not care less about cameras. I am not the picture taking type. Advice please. Make a room in your heart for this Noob. Thank YOU!

cm10 is very usable, imo, but that is really up to you
I'm using AOKP JB, which is like CM10
use safestrap 3 for d3, you can install 4 roms and switch between reboots

Thanks for the reply, so what are the latest versions of AOKP JB and CM10? Safestrap seems very useful. I agree with you better to install both and check which one is more useful.

Where should I start for 4.0x?

I'm just starting out with this whole rom thing. Currently I'm on Peach Sunrise(Gingerbread) and I want try out one of the best, but more importantly, one of the most latest Android version(which is Jelly Bean I think?) custom ROM's.
So which one exactly should I try out first.
I'll appreciate the help guys.

Go with SlimBean. It is one of the best jelly bean Roms in my opinion.

Am wondering why someone on Peach Sunrise is asking? If you dont know how to flash a rom by now i can only recommend switching to ios :good:

But seriously what is the question? He/she is already on peach so obviuosly this person knows how to flash. We all know it takes very little effort an time going from one rom to the next. "So which one exactly should I try out first." says what gona flash again anyhow? All these roms have pro and cons an most people cutomize them anyhow.
Like so many other threads on xda all this thread really is (or at best could become) is a debate or argument about which rom is best. Which btw those threads eventually end up closed. An rightly so since it all comes down to personal prefernce. Lets see someone tell me what my personal preference should be.
As for helping i have no prob there. Have tried many times, even succeeded on a few occasions.

And yeah, I'm rooted and on a custom ROM but that's as far as I've gotten. So i'm not sure which of the 4.0x roms are good.
Anyways guys, one more question. I suppose I should backup before I flash slimbean, and I have clock work installed. Would that suffice in backing up my peach sunrise or are there another app you guys would suggest for doing a back up.

You can use clockwork mod to backup. It will do a complete back up of your entire system, so you'll be able to return it just the way you left it when you made the back up, so if you happen to run into some challenges and want to go back to the way you had things before, you can just restore that backup through clockwork.
If you have any downloaded apps that you want to bring over to your new rom, and you don't feel like downloading again or you want to keep the saved app data say for like a game you are playing, you can backup these up with titanium backup which you can find in the play store. Once on the new rom you can reinstall titanium backup and restore all of your app backups through there.

Ah! Thanks for that titanium backup info. When I went from stock to custom I lost the majority of my apps and contacts. So thanks for letting me that clockwork mod won't back stuff like that up for me.

No problem. mate. Here's an extra little tip. When you first flash slim bean, everything will look tiny because the default dpi is set to like 182 I think, and some apps in the play store won't be compatible due to this. so you have to go into settings under Interface > General UI > LCD Density and set it to 240 reboot and clear play store app data.

Thanks for tip about the dpi setting. Maybe this change should be rolled into the next build.
I haven't tried slimbean; I was going to recommend CM10. I thought Slim was not quite ready for prime time maybe.
I'll watch this thread to see if the new guy comments about his experience.

I'm thinking you realize this already, but just to clarify:
CWM will backup that stuff for you, but it would not be too useful when changing ROMs. 'Cause CWM backs up everything, including the OS, into one big glob. It's mostly useful when you hate the new ROM or something effs up and you simply want to roll back the phone, lock stock, and barrel.
I'd wager that most of us use both CWM (or TWRP) and Titanium. Titanium is a more finely-grained restoration tool.
As you gain experience you might want to check out TWRP. It's a bit more convenient than CWM. But really there's nothing wrong with CWM.

Yeah the new build has a res fix. And yeah I'm really liking slim. It is really stable, and I feel it may be even more stable then cm10. And it is definitely, noticeably smoother in performance. You should definitely give it a try.

Another vote for SlimBean. I used CM10 for a little bit. Since going SlimBean, there's no way I'd go back. Significantly smoother.

Well I tried installing the zip from here and I get some kind of installation aborted error. I finally got around to trying this because I installed a shut down app and when the app shut my phone down, when I went to start it back up it would hang at the Exhibit screen. So I guess I have to be cautious on the apps I download that are for rooted apps.
Ah well, I'll go back to peach sunrise(hopefully, i'm redownloading it now, a restore from clockwork wouldn't even help). I'll play with Slim a bit later when I have more time.

Now I'm getting an installation error with peach sunrise. So I deleted off my phone, put it back on it, and when I go to install it the screen just flashes real quick and that's it. When I reboot the phone I get hung up on that Exhibit screen again.
What the heck did I do to my phone with that shut down app? I even forget the name of the app and I don't see it on my phone.
EDIT: Looks like I'm in a boot loop.
EDIT AGAIN. Well I'm finally on Slim Bean. I had to wipe my entire system to do anything with it. What can I do in the future to prevent this? Like I said even the backup that I set a few days ago wouldn't work. So this app must have really messed with something...

Sounds like you flashed an apk for some other device. In future only flash what us meant for this device. Playstore won't let you install non compatible and chances are if from playstore it isn't harmful as they are strict and quick to root out malicious software.

Flashing future official ROMs after unlock -

Hey guys! My apologies if this is a redundant question, but I just wanted to be sure:
If ASUS decides to actually put out an official KitKat update for this thing eventually, would I still be able to try it out / install it normally *after* I've unlocked?
If so, what exactly would be my procedure? Will I be blocked from getting or installing the OTA, or would the process be no different?
There's been some great progress it seems on custom ROMs for this thing. I'm a bit gun shy admittedly, as running custom ROMs on previous devices led to a lot of instability. I guess I want to ensure I'll still have the option to try out a future official build if I choose. Thanks in advance!

Yes you will definitely be able to update to KitKat once released. However you won't be able to get the OTA update automatically sent to ur tab once u unlock it. But its pretty simple to get it. After Asus has pushed the ota to devices, the also upload the firmware to their website. U would simple download that and place it in the root of ur internal SD, and reboot. Tab will recognize the update, and give u notification for installing it. And u continue with that. Very simple.
And as for the Roms , the cromix ROM is by far very stable ROM. I have tried it for very long time, and has no issues at all, and the plus side is u can do a lot of customizations yet the ROM still runs faster than stock. I strongly recommend cromix ROM.

This is not 100% true. The current official ROM will only flash with the stock recovery installed and not a custom one, so I would assume the same for any update.
It's not an issue to flash the stock recovery back but it will be an extra step.
Also if and when an official KitKat comes out you will more than likely have to wait until a new recovery is made that is compatible for a custom ROM after that.

I never understand why people are pining for the stock rom - no matter which version or update....
I would feel helpless and lost with only the stock recovery! Lately I've been trying to help several people on stock firmware with corrupted data, no custom recovery, no root, locked bootloader.... You're toast!
All you can do is send it in to Asus and pay a bundle! Whereas unlocked you just fire up fastboot or custom recovery and start to fix it!
Besides - once Asus releases a KK version for this tablet you can bet your.... house that sbdags will have a custom version of it out in no time. And it's going to be better than Asus firmware, receive frequent updates, can be flashed with a custom recovery....
