OTA Question

i was thinking on rooting my nexus one phone but i have this question to determine if i should or not.... my question is am if i root my nexus one with cyanogen rom or desire rom... am i able to get ota updates stll if so how...and is there a way to unroot a nexus one yet?????????

This has been ask many times before but to get to the point. Cyanogen and other developers that work on the roms will included any updates that will improve the user experience. Most of the time the updates will happen before the ota comes out. If you want the options to customize the phone beyond the normal apps and performance improvement then root. Rooting is not for everyone so please do your homework if this is your first time.

well reason i ask is because i heard even if u root the phone and then decide to put an official rom then u can then received ota roms is this not true or??

No. This is a general answer. If a update is done the developer will included it in his build. All you do then is flash the updated version of the rom.

Root/deodexed froyo 2.2 (unoffical) to offical 2.2 root/deodexed?

Hey Guys,
I was just wondering if there was anything that could take me from the unoffical release of froyo 2.2 to the updated version in one quick install file or something of that sort...I dont wana loose all my custom settings ):

I am wondering the same thing...I initially installed the Leaked 2.2 and rooted it. Now, I am just very confused about installing the 2.2 ota. What would be the easiest path updating to the Official 2.2.

Hope this isn't off subject . How can I update the official OTA 2.2 to a deodexed version. I am rooted but new to the X. The X is a bit more work and somewhat scary to mess with due to worry of bricking the phone. I have an Incredible that I work on but my wife has the X soooo I need to learn more about it to take advantage of its full potential. Thanks for any help. XDA development is the best and just wanted to say thanks to everyone for your time and hard work.

ICS Leak Flash Question

I posted these questions earlier in the Q+A section and figure this is a better place for them.....
So I've got my 4th Bionic en route due to pesky data connection issues and no GPS. I'm wondering if I should flash the .232 ICS build. A couple questions arise if I may:
- Is it easily rootable? Running .905 stock root presently on my old Bionic. New one I'm sure will have .905 obviously stock and unmessed with.
- Does installing a leaked version make it any more difficult to install the official version at its release? I'm thinking it would be a good opportunity to work bugs out of pertinent apps and familiarize myself with the new version.
- Should I root the .905 before flashing the ICS? Does that matter? I'm thinking it'd be lost anyways on the flash up. And the root of the external (not sdcard, sdcard-ext) SD I'm assuming is where I place the leaked ICS file?
I love these forums as they minimize the knowledge gap between people like me and experts!

From everything I hear, .232 should fix your data connection. It is quite easy to update to it, you just have to put the proper update file onto your external sd card and boot into stock recovery and install it. It is also very easy to root, assuming you have access to a computer running windows. The utility to root it is called razrs_edge and is easy enough to find and download. You will lose root on the upgrade, so it's probably just as easy to wait until after the update to root it. There is also a utility available which will let you downgrade to .905 and apply the new update without losing your data when the time comes for the official update. That can be found here http://www.droidforums.net/forum/motorola-droid-bionic/214902-downgrade-902-no-app-data-loss.html Actually, that utility can probably used to upgrade and root the phone even if you're starting on .905. Also, .232 is probably your best bet right now, as .235 is built so you can't go back to anything before it properly.

And one more quick one. Can I do that flash to .232 right now on my stock, partially frozen and rooted .905 rom without losing any apps or data? Sounds way too good to be true to me!

You can't directly update to the OTA, but that's what the utility which I linked in my previous reply is for. It will let you temporarily downgrade to .905 and allow you to apply the OTA. The person who maintains it does a really good job and keeps it up to date with all the new files when they're released.

As long as you're stock, the upgrade should work fine and shouldn't affect your apps+data. You will lose root (I believe) and need to re-root afterwards though.

One more question.....
OK, so I've managed to get .232 up and running. I haven't rooted it, and truly don't see the point at least at this point because I can just disable the VZ apps that I don't need (namely, all of them.) So, now that I'm on this build, let's say they release the final version tomorrow...what is going to need to happen to update to the final version? I've truly scoured through all of these forums and can't quite figure it out. Will it just be as simple as the .232 flash? I mean is it worth going to .235 on my en route Bionic and loading all of my apps and investing the hours required in getting it perfect? Or will it all just be one waste of time? I know that the final release will be an OTA, so I'm assuming that .905 will need to be in the mix at some point hence the confusion....

You will need to flash the .905 fxz file in order to receive the OTA. There are a couple ways of doing that. The most failsafe way would be to do it using RSD Lite, however that will wipe all of your data and basically return your phone to a like-new state. The other main way is to use SamuriHL's House of Bionic program/script. It uses a modified version of the fxz file that will not wipe your data. You can use it to return to .905 and install the OTA in the normal way, by checking for updates and letting it install once it is available. You can also use it if you download the OTA when it is released and basically do it the same way you updated to .232. When the OTA is released, I'm sure he'll put together a new version of HoB that includes it, so that the whole process is fairly well automated. There's no saying when exactly the OTA will be ready, but for now just enjoy your ice cream sandwich.
When I mention that it will not wipe your data, that means that all of your apps and whatnot will remain intact. In any case, I don't recommend updating to .235, I have it and can't tell much difference between that and the .232 leak, and the .232 leak has a safe route back to stock, whereas .235 doesn't, so it's definitely not worth the risk. If you're happy with it without rooting, then by all means keep it that way, rooting means it's just easier to mess things up.

No stock rooted 4.2.2 rom?

I see some custom 4.2.2 Roms out, just no stock Roms yet.
My question is why not? With so many of us trying to get 4.2.2.

This, a thousandfold. If you can't do this yourself - meaning you choose to not learn how to do it yourself, more often than not, and expect people to hold your hand and just fulfill the GIMME GIMME GIMME nature - then why bother, stick with stock and be done with it.
Took me what, 5 minutes to do a clean install of 4.2.1, root it, install CWM, use CWM to install the 4.2.2 update, and remained rooted.
Is it really so tough to learn how to do some things yourself? I wonder...

Where are you getting a clean 4.2.1 install?

I restored 4.2.1 factory image, and got the message to upgrade in minutes. After that I managed to root with the usual method. Same adb commands, recovery and SU is working as in 4.2.1
4.2.2 is nice, but nothing really new

Wow, I'm really unhappy to see this dumb answers here at xda.
I'm really ashamed of this behavior.
I think, we don't have a stock rooted odexed or deodexed rom here, because the Nexus 7 isn't the real developer device. On nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus there are those roms.
I hope to have those rom here in a while.
Edit: seriously, guys, then giving bad ideas with stock 4.2.1 and updating this with ota.
Why nothing using the stock 4.2.2 directly? It is free to download.
Sorry, I'm really frustrated about those answers.

I don't use stock due to all the little hidden restrictions laying around it. I hate stock on any device :/

You can get the stock factory images directly from Google (search for "Factory Images for Nexus Devices" - xda won't let me post links), but they don't even have 4.2.1 anymore, just 4.2.2 . You *should* be able to install those directly.
I'm getting some odd "can't open /tmp/update.zip (bad)" messages on install though which I haven't gotten on prerooted roms.

Easy way to root the new stock 4.2.2 and install it full image.
To the OP there is a way to get the original full factory image for your nexus device. Here is the link.

You can find the nakasi image 4.2.2 and download the tar image.
Then I would download and install the google nexus 7 toolkit here,

Then install the sdk manager and update.

Once all is installed then in the toolkit make sure you install the android usb drivers. I would then reboot your pc.
Then take the factory tar image and move it into a folder called "put factory image here" in the nexus 7 toolkit program files.
Then follow directions to flash it. You can then after it is flashed follow directions to root it.
Now you have a stock rooted version of 4.2.2. That is what I did and it worked for me. I am no expert by any means. I hope this helps.
I am not sure why I can't post links to help but if I have done something wrong please delete my links to the google factory image. If you google nexus 7 factory image you should find it.

These things take a little bit of time. 4.2.2 JUST rolled out, and the code was later dropped to AOSP. It will take a few days for the minds (who have other stuff to do, like jobs, families, etc.) to set everything up.
Also, Wugs root toolkit makes this process pretty idiot proof. I'm unsure if he has updated it to include 4.2.2, but you should definitely check it out.

It has nothing to do with the 7 not being "the real developer device." Nothing is further from the truth. ROMs available for the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 aren't here because the devs simply DONT HAVE A NEXUS 7. Why would a developer make a ROM for a device they don't own? It's the same reason there are ROMs for the Nexus 7 and not the others.
What I'm saying is you probably won't see those ROMs unless you take the time to port it yourself.
Developers on this site get really annoyed with those who have no idea how things work, and are also impatient for updates. This is a community, and we are given the opportunity to use free software these developers spend countless hours working on.
Learn to respect the developers and be as self reliant as you can. The tools are here at your disposal.

As the post above makes abundantly clear, 4.2.2 just rolled out yesterday and in roughly 24 hours Google posted the full factory images, and voila, now there's even a deodexed and and odexed and rooted too stock 4.2.2 ROM available - this stuff takes time, but it sure seems like some *cough*people*choke* are pretty damned impatient sometimes.
Kids... I tell ya.

That's what I did last night, Factory image, rooted it, etc. Got the update notification, copied the update to my main sd card location and installed it through recovery. No issues, still getting some apps re-installed , etc.

I don't want to start off by being annoying but I was really saddened to read this. I'm new to Android. I got the N7 for Christmas. My first Android device. Love it!
I only had it a couple of days before I had it rooted (much easier than iPod). I wish I would have known not to update to 4.2.2 straight from the tablet. I had no idea it was going to unroot it doing it that way.
Any suggestions on weather I should do a clean install, re-root then use CWM (I'm guessing it stands for ClockWorkMod) to do the update or just wait to root the 4.2.2 .
Obviously I'm going to have to reinstall all my stuff if I do a clean install.
Any advice on the best way to do this would be great. I guess it shouldn't be that hard to learn how to do the updating using CWM

well buddy if i was you i would wait till wugs updates his tool kit it will be much easier but if your impatient like the rest of us just go in to wugs tool kit thread and download his kit it has an option to root since im assuming that youre unlocked all you have to do is re root it

Flashing future official ROMs after unlock -

Hey guys! My apologies if this is a redundant question, but I just wanted to be sure:
If ASUS decides to actually put out an official KitKat update for this thing eventually, would I still be able to try it out / install it normally *after* I've unlocked?
If so, what exactly would be my procedure? Will I be blocked from getting or installing the OTA, or would the process be no different?
There's been some great progress it seems on custom ROMs for this thing. I'm a bit gun shy admittedly, as running custom ROMs on previous devices led to a lot of instability. I guess I want to ensure I'll still have the option to try out a future official build if I choose. Thanks in advance!

Yes you will definitely be able to update to KitKat once released. However you won't be able to get the OTA update automatically sent to ur tab once u unlock it. But its pretty simple to get it. After Asus has pushed the ota to devices, the also upload the firmware to their website. U would simple download that and place it in the root of ur internal SD, and reboot. Tab will recognize the update, and give u notification for installing it. And u continue with that. Very simple.
And as for the Roms , the cromix ROM is by far very stable ROM. I have tried it for very long time, and has no issues at all, and the plus side is u can do a lot of customizations yet the ROM still runs faster than stock. I strongly recommend cromix ROM.

This is not 100% true. The current official ROM will only flash with the stock recovery installed and not a custom one, so I would assume the same for any update.
It's not an issue to flash the stock recovery back but it will be an extra step.
Also if and when an official KitKat comes out you will more than likely have to wait until a new recovery is made that is compatible for a custom ROM after that.

I never understand why people are pining for the stock rom - no matter which version or update....
I would feel helpless and lost with only the stock recovery! Lately I've been trying to help several people on stock firmware with corrupted data, no custom recovery, no root, locked bootloader.... You're toast!
All you can do is send it in to Asus and pay a bundle! Whereas unlocked you just fire up fastboot or custom recovery and start to fix it!
Besides - once Asus releases a KK version for this tablet you can bet your.... house that sbdags will have a custom version of it out in no time. And it's going to be better than Asus firmware, receive frequent updates, can be flashed with a custom recovery....
