OTA Question - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i was thinking on rooting my nexus one phone but i have this question to determine if i should or not.... my question is am if i root my nexus one with cyanogen rom or desire rom... am i able to get ota updates stll if so how...and is there a way to unroot a nexus one yet?????????

This has been ask many times before but to get to the point. Cyanogen and other developers that work on the roms will included any updates that will improve the user experience. Most of the time the updates will happen before the ota comes out. If you want the options to customize the phone beyond the normal apps and performance improvement then root. Rooting is not for everyone so please do your homework if this is your first time.

well reason i ask is because i heard even if u root the phone and then decide to put an official rom then u can then received ota roms is this not true or??

No. This is a general answer. If a update is done the developer will included it in his build. All you do then is flash the updated version of the rom.

OTA Disabled when using Cyanogen????

Hello all...
I just read about Android 2.2 Froyo that is scheduled to come out sometime within the next few months. What I am wondering is will I get the OTA update pushed to my phone from Google and will I be able to update?
I am running CyanogenMod 5.0.6-N1 on my Nexus One.
I apologize if this seems like a dumb question but I am a newbie to all this.
OTA will be gone after rooting, but the update will still be available for root users to be applied through recovery.
It might even leak to root users sooner as was done in the past

Hey KnightMAREcrow...
Thanks for the reply.
But I don't understand what you mean by the update will still be available for root users to be applied through recovery. Huh?
Again sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm learning all this as I go.

If you have rooted your phone (which you have to install cyan), you will need to put back stock recovery and stock rom in order to successfully install the OTA. What Knight said was that, usually updates such as Froyo/2.2 will be out for rooted users like you through Cyan or other Roms, so you do not have to install stock rom/rec. Just wait it Out!
Ohhhhh ok so the next Cyanogen Update should incorporate all the features that will come with Froyo....GOT IT!!!!
Thanks for the lesson...much appreciated!
Even though you aren't getting a notification about the OTA - rooted users will still be able to download a .zip and flash it through recovery just like a custom ROM. This version specifically though will not be the one Google released, I believe they will change things to in order to make it usable by us rooted users.
I don't know really though, but it looks like that is what happened with the previous OTA. Cyanogen will integrate Froyo's features into his ROM regardless, so I guess it really doesn't matter.

Want to root, have some questions

Since everything I need to know is scattered across various threads and there is no specific information regarding my question AFAIK so I decided to post a new thread. Forgive a newb for being worried.
I've decided to root my N1 and am running the EPF24B European build. I just had some questions and concerns:
1. What ROM do you think is best? I think the majority of people like Cyanogen.
2. If I root my phone now and flash on Cyanogen, when Cyanogen releases a Froyo ROM how will I update? Does that happen through a dedicated app? OTA?
3. How do I keep all my current programs and settings? I've heard of Nandroid but have no idea what it does. I presume it has something to do with the NAND memory?
4. btw how stable is a rooted phone?
5. I've seen a number of guides here, but don't know whether or not they are the latest versions. Can anyone point me to a proper guide? Or are they all the same?
Thanks if anyone can answer this.

you might get flamed for this or get this thread closed but i will try to help u.
1)while cyanogen is the best rom in my opinion, froyo is the ****. no matter what. and when cyanogen finally puts his touches on it, it will be even better.
3)no you cant keep them. u would have to be ROOTED first and then you can use titanium backup to make a backup or all your settings and freeze apps. til then, nope u have to completely wipe and start over again. i know when i switch from rom to rom, google automatically downloads the apps that i have had installed before i switch roms if that helps you any.
4)rooted phones are VERY stable and even faster than stock. more memory, runs smoother. the only one that might not run as smooth is the Desire Rom because of sense ui but i love sense ui and have it on my G1 but yes rooted phones are stable.
5)i have followed the instructions of this guide that was for macs tho. u have to be a bit specific if your on mac or pc
I'm using a PC.
And thanks for your input.
btw you didn't answer question 2. If I update to CM now, will I be able to update OTA when a Froyo version comes out?

[Q] ICS Possilbe...??

Hi All...I'm relatively new to android rooting and would like to know what custom ROM's are available for the Droid Bionic??
Some members were very helpful with my questions recently when I rooted my HTC Thunderbolt.
It seems that the Bionic is a little more difficult to work with and I hope there are some options.
My preference would be a fully functional ICS rom, however, if the best I will do is GB then it has to be. I have to have all of the phone working and without hic-cups (phone, data, wifi, camera, etc.)...I am a heavy daily user and cannot afford to loose any functionality.
Please let me know what options are possible and add the links I will need to both root and install the files. I know there are past threads with this question, but I find it easier to follow new answers.
Thank you all for your help,
ghdroiduser
We are on the verge of ICS right now. There are tons of leaks, but anything newer than 232 will be unable to receive the official OTA.

Ota vs roms

Hi. can you please tell me what is the advantage of updating to 4.2.2 through OTA rather than just by ROM.
I had 4.1.2 before and I flashed custom 4.2.2 rom, but my base is till not updated (for example HBOOT IS 1.44 INSTEAD OF 1.54)
so what would have changed if I would have waited for the OTA? (better camera or speed?)
Honestly, there are no advantages through OTA. HBOOT updates are dangerous because they can potentially lock out getting s-off. It's better to stay on the older HBOOT. If you don't care about rooting, then by all means do the OTA.
I've already gotten all the improvements from the 2.24 base just from flashing a stock rooted deodexed rom. Didn't touch the firmware or HBOOT.
I don't think it's fair to say there are no benefits to using OTAs instead of ROMs. For example, for the time being at least I am very satisfied with sense 5 and how the phone handles and so I haven't flashed a new ROM yet. I also doubt that I will for a while. If you are such a person as I, then OTAs are a much better option because they should (theoretically) be more stable given the extensive testing they go through (which of course is also tier biggest downside because they can take so bloody long to reach your phone...). I notice that when devs first started pushing out 4.2.2 ROMs for the One there were a lot of bugs reported, which is fine because it's super awesome that people can have a choice to update early if they want, but a nuisance none the less. I see far fewer concerns with official OTAs because of their testing, especially north American OTAs because the carriers are so nitpicky about them.
Oh and once they stop supporting your phone and pushing OTAs to you, it becomes a moot argument since all you have is ROMs at that point

Help with Root/Recovery/ROM

Hey everyone. I'm just wondering what the latest developments are as far as custom recovery and ROMs go for the Z3+ single sim unit?
I've had the phone almost a year, and with warranty about to expire, and some performance issues (disappearing flashlight toggle, and laggyness in general at times), I think I'm finally ready to dump the stock room and go for something custom.
I don't have much free time to research the topic, hence this post, so I apologise if this has been discussed recently. Last I read, there were a lot of steps to get root and recovery, and at the time, were no good custom ROMs for the Z3+, so really no point to voiding warranty, IMO. From browsing the dev forum, it looks like there are at least a few ROMs now.
So can someone tell me, or direct me to a post, describing the process to unlock the bootloader (mines locked), get root, and install twrp and a rom?
Thanks, I appreciate the help

I tried nougat and didn't like it, nothing is better than MM and there are also some worse parts.
My aim to update N was to have a dark theme with apps included. At last, I decided on stock MM rom 32.2.A.5.11 with theme ready apps by Black Out team, OM5Z kernel and twrp 3.0.2.0.
