Hi All,
I am the person that someone made a thread about saying that I was attempting the impossible and porting Ubuntu Phone OS on an LG Optimus 4xHD. I was waiting for the bootloader unlock however my attempts at unlocking the bootloader failed and in the attempt to do so cause my bootloader to update to 262-000. I eventually got fed up with the try and decided to try it without the unlock.
I have now got Ubuntu Phone OS running but only from the ADB shell (so no UI at the moment) and am soon publishing a video and uploading the zips and instructions of how I did it so that other developers can help me get the UI working.
News will be posted at the following link.
elbuntuprojects.com/articles/
And tonight I will be uploading the documentation of how I managed to get as far as I have.
If any developers want to help keep watching this space and ill update you as soon as the stuff needed is online.
Note: This is only for people who dont need the phone at the moment as its purely the command line so ubuntu_chroot and co so not for everyone....
Updates soon, just thought I would give an update,

It absolutely will, ive tried a couple of times but had trouble getting it to boot, its not high on my priority list because ubuntu-touch itself it still in its infancy (think how long it took google to get android to a useable state), building it at the moment is just for the novelty
Interesting thing is that about half a year ago, at around 13.04 upgrade, when I ported Ubuntu Touch to my Galaxy R, everything worked like a charm with really minor changes, but on the O4X it's hardly even booting.

In those days it was still in an early stage, so they still haven't make massive mods that have been now applied.
I'm working on it too, and it's more difficult than I thought, even if it's based on CM 10.1.
I succesfully compiled it without hard-to-fix errors, but had a bootloop at kernel/ramdisk-level.
Any thought about what could cause it?

Hi all,
Is there a way of rooting a RAZRi without unlocking the bootloader?\
I'm on Retail Brazil Latal Jellybean 4.1.2

Not at the moment. Devs do not look into it since it is possible to get root via unlocking the BL, which is sad
how about we start a "petition"? Cause by looking at the views of this threat it seems like people ARE interested in a solution but the devs are not looking into it because they think that noone needs it.
Any thoughts about this?

I was just about to post this question. I agree, the sheer number of views reflects the interest in this method.
I disagree that Moto updating would patch putting off devs - in all the years that I've owned Android phones with different manufacturers, that never put off any devs that I spoke with. Many acknowledged that it was getting harder but they never gave up. Then, someone would find a 'one root for all on this firmware for many phones' which completely override the manufacturer's 'patch'.
As for the petition...I have seen contributions to projects work. If it's a matter of pledging small donations I'd be happy to contribute, I have in the past. I'm not totally sure on the rules on this, they have changed I think. Another issue is that I believe it is Dan Rosenberg who is usually successful with Moto devices so he may be the best man for the job.
Even using an unlocked bootloader, finding information and sharing it on RSD Lite is difficult. Try Googling it: I cannot find a good, comprehensive guide that could be offered to newbies. You can find pieces on how to use it and where to find files, that's it. With the only root solution on Jelly Bean being using an unlocked bootloader, this RAZR i section fills with more bricked phones day after day after day...Any simpler root solution would go a long way to avoiding this.

well reading word by word more than one time, knowing what you are doing, straight following the instructions step by step and asking if you are unsure will avoid bricked phones, too.
Most of the bricked phone owners here read the wrong instruction or flashed the wrong files, cause they did not read word by word or did not ask when they were unsure doing the right things.
Just have a look through the threads: they mostly tried to root or flash with ics-files over JB....

I already wrote couple emails to D. Rosenberg and he immediately got back to me but his answer was a no. He is not going to look into getting root without unlocking the BL since there is a "perfectly viable manufacturer-supported unlock mechanism" (BL unlock)
The Reason i've posted yesterday, but no one was listening. He already stated that he won't root an unlockable Device, when there was the discussion about rooting the XT910/XT912 (JB).

I read German poorly now but the first seems to be instructions. I know there are many sets of instructions but I haven't found comprehensive guides that really go through what the software is, what all of it's capabilities are, what should not be done. For example, people keep using RSD Lite on here, downgrading Android version then getting a bricked phone. Why isn't that included in instruction guides? We need to know everything we can and can't do to avoid bricks.
Please, if you are know much about could you write a short guide of what you can do and what not to do?

Ah ha. That is a shame.
Rooting is still safer for the average user I think than unlocking the bootloader.
The problem with using RSD Lite is that it is hard to find a friendly nooby guide for everyone. Everyone says 'use it' then laugh at you when you brick your phone.
Hi guys,
so I read an article this morning that the folks from Lookout rooted the google glass via the exploit discovered by bluebox : Android security bug 8219321
It should be possible to get root on the Razr I with this exploit, does anyone know if someone is working on that?
Still by telling from the view of this threat people are really interested in getting su without unlocking the BL.
Help
hey guys, can i root my razr i if it's on android 4.0.4?
if it is possible, please, can someone upload the needed files for this? cause i didn't find anywhere
thanks everyone

Hi, this threat is about JB, but here you go:
root ICS
We need a dev to figure out how to unlock our bootloaders!!! I know its possible but I dont have the knowledge or the tools to get it done, but I know there is someone out there that does. We need to find that person
I also read that you will lost Bravia Engine 2 and void warranty.
yes, but you could always just relock. i mean isnt that what android is all about... customization and options

I'm not a developer and i've just arrived into the LG world with the new LG L4-II, a slightly smaller and cheaper version of the L5-II, but with exactly the same base hardware.
I have already rooted it using the tutorial here, available for the L5-II, but i've yet to see any ROM development for this new line of devices, so i decided to share a link with the community that shows that the full Source Code for these devices has already been released by LG.
I hope it will be useful for the developers, so that some day in the near future we see some custom Roms for these new devices.

Thank you about the link and the information. I do hope someone takes the second generation ( II ) of the L models seriously. Almost no one is working which makes most of us sad
Could you be so kind to give me a link to the rooting tutorial? And may be the steps you've followed? Because I want to root my phone too.
Thanks and cheers to all guys who share useful info and modded roms with us!
thanks for this man. it helps a lot
BL unlock needed!
This is kind of useless, untill we get bootloader unlock. I've managed to build recovery.img for MT6575 chipset with some tools and also flashed it to E440, but bootloader is blocking the recovery boot due to security reasons, but boots in normal mode(Android)... i can share recovery.img if someone need it.
Update: I have boot.img and bootloader image, too - everithing except /system and /data
Added: Ops... My bad. now I think it is kernel related security check, will take a look at the kernel source and try again. I'm not a DEV, just playing.

I hate to sound so new build asking this question but with all the variants and threads kind of combining I'm a little confused. I'm not new to xda or rooting or installing ROMs to Samsung devices and have searched but am not getting quite the confirmation I'm looking for.
I see that anyone with the g950u can get root now and that's awesome but are ROMs device specific between all the different variants? I see there is atleast one room that's says g950u in the title of the thread can anyone clear this up for me please?

The U.S. devices (g950u) still have a locked bootloader - the first piece of software executed when you power on. Being locked means that it (the CPU) is looking for a specific key (the public signature) embedded in that code before it continues loading the code _ one that only Samsung/Verizon has authorized. To change that public signature yourself, you need the other half of the key (the private key) and that is akin to asking Samsung for all its source code to every device it makes -- never going to happen!
It will only continue the boot process if the signatures match for the next part (basically the ROM) of the code. A custom ROM won't match that signature, so the bootloader won't execute the ROM code. Having 'root' means you have control over everything software related in the ROM *after* it is booted into the ROM - meaning you're already past the whole signature part.
Unless someone finds a backdoor or security flaw that can be exploited on the bootloader (unlikely), or Samsung (or more likely Verizon) gives us a program to unlock the bootloader (even less of a chance), we won't be seeing any ROMs for the g950u. So, do like I did and shut off all the Samsung gunk (I use all of Google's apps because they behave the same way on every device I own - I can't stand Samsung apps or TouchWiz!) that you can, load Nova and set it up to behave the way YOU want it to work. Then just enjoy what you have!
Thank you for your answer I will root and try to make it more like Google
Great post rhricik! Best explanation I've heard in a while.
From what rhricik posted, it sounds like one can't root because the bootloader is locked in the Verizon version?
Are the bootloaders locked on the AT&T and T-Mobile versions?
